So far the best Dim Sum place I've tasted in MN so far. They have a large variety of dim sum. Most place are limited and only have a lot of shrimp and pork dishes only. This place has duck, crispy pork, shrimp, chicken feet, etc...and at the end you finish off with their delicious pineapple bun. The only drawback... They are very busy and need a better seating arrangement. They need to get those devices that alerts you when the table is ready. This is a great place to grab some dim sum! there's usually already people waiting for the restaurant to open on weekends so if you're a larger party, try and get here early! If you're a party of 2, there's usually not too long of a wait. Parking lot is tiny so be prepared to stalk someone coming out of Mandarin Kitchen to get their parking spot! Just kidding, parking lot is small but the few times i've been here, i've always managed to snag a spot without too much hassle. Since there's so many people eating here, you know the food is fresh since it doesn't sit in the cart all day like Pagoda's dim sum. As a full-blooded Chinese who has tasted Chinese food in many major US cities, the quality of Mandarin Kitchen is easily among the top 20%. Certainly one of the best (if not the best) in Twin Cities. Now granted they are Not the cheapest. But if you want quality Chinese food in midwest, there are only a couple in Chicago who can truly claim higher quality and cheaper price. Took my family and an aunt here for dinner tonight. We ordered crab meat fish maw soup, seafood bird's nest, fried sole, beef chow fun, lobster, and etc. The disappointment was with the seafood bird's nest. It was old so they tried to cover it up by over frying the nest (potato shell). I inform them about it so they brought out another old shell. Told them it was the same. They didn't seem to care because when I told the cashier lady and she just said, "I don't know," and when on charging for a bad and old item. This place think they can do whatever because they don't care about customer service/satisfaction. We won't be come back for dinner anymore. I go here often for dinner and always get excellent food. The service isn't always great, and sometimes requests to modify ingredients/spices etc aren't accommodated, but it's no worse than other chinese food restaurants I've been to. Same thing with getting appetizers after entree, and the situation where the table that came in AFTER me gets their food BEFORE me. It's become clear that if the next order up is beef with broccoli, they'll make a huge batch it, and whoever ordered it will get their food. They have a huge menu and over the years my companions & I have ordered from all sections of it (going back to the days when they had 2 menus), and no complaints about any of it. I went to Dim Sum here once, and it was a chaotic nightmare. I am not a fan of Dim Sum in general, and at most restaurants have found that it's a bit chaotic & you have no idea what you're ordering -- every dish is a 'mystery box challenge'. read more

Being the major dim sum player in town comes with perks and they know it. They charge the prices that they do and can get away with it because they know the crowds will still come. Watch your time if you're thinking of coming, too late and you'll be stuck waiting in line and certain things may be all gone for the day by the time you sit down. When you do sit down, avoid the side rooms and try to sit on a major path in the main seating area or you may have to wait in the between carts for a very long time. They can do traditional dim sum as well as the best tea houses in the Seattle Chinatown I think. The flavors are there as is the quality. Shame is that they don't always carry everything, once it's gone then it's gone for the day so you have to be quick! Also, apparently certain cart pushers only give you one bite at the cart. If you pass on the cart and then change your mind, you may receive a snarky response. If you don't find something that you want but know that they carry it, find one of the black suited folks and ask them to track it down for you, better that then not get it I think - all is fair in this fight for dim sum! read more

We ate here last year and it was our first experience. Really enjoyed it! This time, we took my brother and his wife for their first time there. The food was just and as we remembered but our service this time around was really disappointing. We arrived around 11a.m on a Sunday. We were seated immediately, which was surprising. We were seated near the front desk area though, which in the end, was the bad part of the experience and added frustration to our group of just four! After we got our first round of everything being served, the carts never came back. We ate for about 20-30 minutes and waited for the food carts to come our way, and they never did. Each time we waited and spotted one coming towards our direction, it would veer towards the table near the kitchen doors, and then they'd park the cart and that was that. I got a hold of one of the gentlemen refilling our water glasses and asked him if he could let the food cart people know that we wanted some service to where we were sitting. He flagged down the soup lady and she came over and we didn't want soup. It was seriously disappointing. I really wanted to eat actual food and enjoy this experience since it e's my second time there, but they didn't come through for me this time. We waited about 30 mins. and just kind of gave up on the service cause we were leaving back home that day and didn't want to get home to late. It wasn't as good as the first time. Mandarin Kitchen is hands down my favorite Dim Sum place in the Twin Cities! They have a really nice variety, including anything you'd expect at Dim Sum. What stands out most to me is Mandarin Kitchen's excellent service. The wait staff are sure to offer you everything when they bring their cart around, but they know that no means no, and are not at all pushy when you define their food. They are also very fast at seating people and getting their meal started. Last but not least, Mandarin Kitchen is a great people watching spot on weekends, and has a very lively atmosphere. I went here for dim sum and the dim sum is quite good. They have push carts which most places in Chicago don't have anymore expect for a few. The service is much better at this place than here in Chicago. It's also cheaper. I'd pick this place over any place here. Also, they already add tip on to the bill. read more

Upon walking in it felt like a Chinatown restaurant, more San Francisco than NY, but I knew the food would be great seeing the Fish and lobster holding tanks and a glass display of duck. We were the other couple of Americans, everyone else was Asian. The food is authentic. If you aren't adventurous to dabble in seafood which is their specialty, more familiar items are in the back of the menu. Waitstaff were super professional and friendly. First you get a free pot of tea on the table....already I liked this place, it is old school (now) but how it should be done (2nd pot is a nominal charge) Egg-roll are HOMEMADE yes, that's correct! Ordered seafood chow fun and it was stellar, husband had chicken dish and it was great. Way huge portions, more than normal. Saw their eggplant dishes, crispy fish, scallops, soups from other tables. Service is terrible-- you would feel you enter into a China town of 1980s-- waiters and waitess only speak and understand cantonese, where 90% of current Chinese imigrants speak madarain Chinese, which is official language in China. I ordered by sticky rice chicken (dim sum) -- 1 portion, but waiters attempted to server me 2. When I asked, he took 1 one back -- but I found I was still double charged. I found out that after I got home. I don't know if waiter deliberately double marked my order. But i experienced the same double charge with another Chinese restraunant, so i am a little concerned about the honestry in Chinese restraunants. read more

We arrived at 1:30pm and specially asked if dim sum was still being sold and were assured it was by front desk. After 10 m waiting for seats they placed us in one of the back rooms, we had one server come by with a plate of shrimp noodle so we accepted a plate. We then sat for 20 minutes before anyone else came by to check On us or offer us anything else. We then were told they were no longer selling dim sum! But they had literally had us sit there 20 minutes of no service or explaining it was over to ask if we wanted anything else. We decided to look at menu to see if we wanted anything to order and server assured as they would check back in. Another 15 minutes pass no service so we promptly went to pay, for 2 plates if cost us $13 for the amount of 2 dumplings due to a minimum per person charge that we shouldn't have had to pay in first place. We won't be going back. We have gone on other nights and food is relatively good but not worth it for the poor service we received!! read more

DIM SUM!!!! Definitely the best place in the Twin Cities. We got there 15 minutes before they opened and the line was already forming. They have a great variety of items. I love the tofu wraps, long noodles with shrimp and the coconut buns (this is a must have for me). Lets talk Har Gow. Their Har Gow (shrimp dumpling) is just a-ok. Not spectacular, thick dough and dry shrimp with an acceptable flavor profile. The rest of the dishes I picked out were just fine: shrimp noodle, sticky rice, pork shumai, shrimp/scallop dumpling, fried crab/shrimp puff, egg tart. The other reviews on the $$ is accurate. This place charges a nice sum, there arn't many dim sum places in MN so I can see why--- but as someone who had some of the best dim sum in NYC and paid half the price I don't see myself coming back any time soon. The cost:worth ratio just isn't worth it ($47 for 7 dishes just doesn't feel right). I'll stick to A&L Chinese Restaurant in Invergrove. read more
