I've come here more than a handful of times and always leave happy. One time I didn't like my dish and that dish is now off the menu, so I guess I wasn't alone. Most recently came in for dinner with my dad. We shared a dozen oysters that tasted fresh and delicious, great mignonette sauce. Came here with husband on a Friday night. It wasn't too busy. Love the big fish tank and decor of the resturant. I can tell the owner thought everything out very well. We ordered the tour of Asian, Singapore noodles, and salt and pepper seafood. Tour of Asia was probably the best of the three things we ordered. Dim Sum tasted like they were frozen dumplings. Bao buns was off with meat to bao ratio. Singapore noodles had ok flavor but I think the wok needed to be hotter for a drier stir fry. I was disappointed with the salt and pepper seafood. I guess I should have read the description better. However typically when you order anything salt and pepper at a Chinese restaurant it's deep fried and then dried stir fried also with not as many veggies. This is the first time that we went to Mandarin kitchen. It was a welcoming experience, and the food was ready exactly what they expected. We were welcomed warmly by the staff. The parking in the Montgomery Village shopping center was easy. It was a very relaxed environment and you could even say Zen. We tried to a variety of dishes and I think I may try others in the future. The duck bao was lovely and worth the money. They were presented in a taco shape with a light spiciness in the hoisin, perfectly tender duck, and fragrant and tasty cilantro and pickled veg. The beet salad was fairly standard, especially in Sonoma County. Seems a little strange on this menu, considering the other options that we ordered, but it was nice as I do love a beet salad. My husband ordered the fried rice with barbecued pork. It was fresh and well cooked. It was filled with vegetables and some barbecued pork. The dish was very vegetable forward with a limited amount of meat. Overall, it was a tasty and basic option. I ordered a chicken and peanut sauce with vegetables. What a great option! The peanut sauce had a little bit of heat and a finish of lime. Totally worth it as the vegetables were cooked perfectly. Al dente vegstables are my preference and this dish did not disappoint. The interior of this restaurant is so beautiful, I could sit in it all day. Very comfortable seating and the workers were so sweet. We mostly came here for the $1 oysters and they were AMAZING. They were fresh, sweet, and paired so deliciously with their vinaigrette! They're only the small side, which makes sense, but I love the size! I will definitely be coming back here for them. We also ordered the bang bang shrimp, har gow, and pad thai. DEFINITELY order the bang bang shrimp! Crunchy and a delicious sweet-savory flavor. DON'T get the pad thai. It was way too salty and had too much oyster sauce. The har gow was just okay, I would skip it next time. Overall, this restaurant was way better than I expected. I thought?? I'd read a good review for this place and I was hungry and I thought I would get some to go. I was not trying to get their lunch special, it was almost near dinner time and no one asked me if that's what I wanted. I wanted the full size chicken dish that I ordered but apparently got the lunch special? It was half of what I expected plus rice which I didn't need. Way past most regular lunch hours. Even worse in my opinion, I thought it was impossible to get below average chicken chow mein, so I ordered that to be on the safe side just in case but was proven wrong. Their special menu dish was called crispy chicken with cashews. Wow disappointing! I'll show you in pictures and I'm not being a drama queen everything was bigger than the pieces of chicken. I would literally label them shards of chicken. I've never seen anything like this. The mushrooms, zucchini and onion were way bigger than the limited pieces of chicken. Was this what was left at the end of their lengthy lunch hour? Maybe, but that's not an excuse. Also I should've been asked if I wanted the lunch special. The chicken chow mein I would never describe as regular chicken chow mein. It tasted like the vegetables that it's in and again not a lot of chicken- it actually had a strong zucchini flavor to it and I'm not a huge zucchini fan so I added soy sauce which didn't help a whole lot. The woman working there told me their food was amazing and I will be so happy and want to come back for sure! By the way usually my chest is Mongolian beef and they have no beef at all. The service was excellent . I can take bad service but cannot take mediocre food . My husband ordered their specialty dish , Kung pow crispy pork belly , the meet was cut in chunks and was tough and was probably cooked previously , the meat was cold in a warm dish with few unappetizing vegetables floating around . I ordered their lunch special of chicken with green beans and asked for a spicier version . It was better choice than the speciality dish but lacked depth of flavor . The salad which came with it had a delicious dressing . I have passed the restaurant many times and never seen it crowded . Well, now I know why . The 3 stars are for the excellent service . This fits very well in Montgomery Village as a bland restaurant for an aging population. I was kind of stunned to find out it is owned by the same people who run Sea Noodle/Bistro. Those are much better. We've now been to Mandarin Kitchen twice now since it opened and have been... whelmed at the food. The most recent lunch I had there was unremarkable. The shrimp crisps and the salad were good but the main dish was wholly one dimensional and extremely salty. The chicken was fresh, at least. Given the much better options for Chinese food in the area, I won't be going back here any more. read more

Rack of Lamb, Shanghai Seafood, Sea Bass and Chicken Kun Pow. None over $24. Ambience was fine, looks nice inside and service was good. Can get noisy due to the layout, especially if seated next to small children that use chopsticks as a musical toy. TLDR: Service: Friendly, but poor. Food - Poorly prepared - under/overcooked, bland, and slammed on the table with no regard to pacing. FAIL. Cocktails: Good, but it took them longer to make them than it did for them to make our appetizer AND main courses. No excuse for serving drinks AFTER the main course is on the table. FAIL. Decor/atmosphere - pretty nice! Value: Poor. $100 for two drinks and three poorly prepared dishes is not acceptable. Overall: Poor. Maybe we were here at exactly the wrong time, but I don't think I will be going back to find out. We sat for too long before we got any service. Then, we ordered drinks, and food. The server (R***) said he would stage it out. That didn't exactly happen. After waiting over 10 minutes to order, once we did, it kind of came as an avalanche. We ordered cocktails to start, fried calamari for an app, the Kung Pau Ribeye, and pork fried rice. They brought complimentary rice-cakes and some sauce to start - they were not very interesting or tasty. The sauce was sticky and sweet, and not much else - neither of us wanted to eat it. Then came the calamari. It looked great, with a nice toasty battery that had obvious amounts of red chilies in it - it looked great - but It had a strange fishy smell that struck me before I even got it in my mouth - and a slimy coating and funk once I got it in my mouth that almost made me unswallow. Hard pass. I stopped eating that after the second bite. Then came the food - before we had even "finished" the calamari (remember that two-bites bit?). Oh, remember when I said we ordered drinks, yeah, well they didn't come until after the apps, ANDthe main course was on the table. They didn't bring us anything to serve the food with, so we had to sit and wait for that to show up. After waiting a few minutes, we got some utensils, and then a little later our drinks. Ok. We have it all together now. Food, serving utensils, drinks. We dove in. The Kung Pao Ribeye was undercooked. Nearly raw meat, and nearly flavorless. It came in big hunks that were more like three-bite chunks, and there was a lot of fat and gristle. All of the vegetables were also near-raw and too crispy. No sear - just slimy and super oily, and the vegetables were "extra crispy". The fried rice was aslo SUPER oily, and bland, but also had bits of bbq pork in it that were really hard and dry. It was an odd juxtaposition of raw meat on one plate, and super-dried shoeleather five-spiced meat on the other. Neither plate was hot when it arrived, which made the under-coooked Kung Pao even less interesting. Sauces were bland and uninspiring. Overall, for two drinks, and appetizer, and two entrees we were in $100 and left 70% of the food on the table because we both felt it was barely edible and neither of us wanted to take another bite. None of it was going home with us - not even for the pets. Super disappointing to go spend $100 on Chinese food for two and get served food that was nearly inedible and served in a jumble. It is doubly disappointing because since this restaurant should have some credentials, since it was launched by Tony Ounpamornchai of SEA Thai Bistro, SEA Thai Noodle Bar. I am a fan of his other restaurants, but I will never go to Mandarin Kitchen again - it was the worst Chinese food I have had outside food served on an airplane or the chow line in the military - and that's pretty bad. I expected it to at least be decent - but it was a thorough disappointment. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to a friend. There are too many other places that have stellar service and WAY better food for half the price of. Mandarin Kitchen fails on food, they fail on service, and they fail on value. I almost feel it is generous and give two stars because this was a $100 Chinese dinner. Would I be as upset if it cost $30 - no. I would have been upset if was $30, but this food comes at a premium price - and with that you expect service, quality, and finesse. We got none of that. I would happily pay it if the service, and food quality was there - but it just isn't... You can do a LOT better at many places around town for less than half what they will charge you here. We came 30 minutes before closing but we're still greeted with great reception. I ordered the orange chicken lunch special, it came with a green salad and a delicious miso dressing. The orange chicken was definitely not like the average greasy spoon Chinese joint, the sauce was bursting with flavor, it tasted bright and citrusy not processed and artificial, you could taste the be beautiful orange flavor. We also got the BBQ pork bun, very tasty, the bun was super fluffy and flavorful. My husband got the kung pao chicken and he said it was delicious and a little spicy. This review is solely for the service as I enjoyed the food. I've been here several times and always had a wonderful experience. This last time has made me want to stop supporting though. The waitress we had was an older lady, I believe maybe her name is Holiday. She was incredibly rude, unhelpful and has not a bit of customer service. She not only cussed in front of us but seemed absolutely miserable to be doing her job. She constantly said rude things out loud and almost tried to shame my table in front of other customers. I witnessed her rushing the table next to me to order before they even looked at their menus. Then she tried to rush them their bill. They hadn't even been sat for more than 15 minutes and mind you it was 1pm and the restaurant was dead. I could not believe how unprofessional and rude she was. If you continue letting this employee be a face of your restaurant I can guarantee you will lose MANY customers. What a shame. read more

A year ago I had extraordinary appetizers at the Mandarin Kitchen and although I live in Santa Clara, many miles away, I haven't been able to distance myself from that experience and that wonderful, unusual food. I finally made it back today and once again, left my meal feeling incredibly sad that this magnificent restaurant is so far from home. Please rush there if you live close by and sample the Mandarin Samosas, the vegetarian egg roles and the exquisite wonton soup--better and more flavorful than any I have tried and I have tried a lot.
