Betty's Is the Best for Fresh Seafood! When it comes to diner-style seafood, Betty's has some of the freshest and best-prepared seafood in Sonoma County. In my opinion, nobody else comes close. You may pay a little more at Betty's, but it's absolutely worth it. Everything is cooked fresh, so expect about a 20-minute wait--or call your order in ahead of time and have it ready when you arrive. My personal favorite is the crab sandwich, but the fresh fish and chips are excellent too. You can mix things up with prawns, scallops, or calamari, depending on what they're offering. The coleslaw is really good, and the garlic fries are fantastic! And don't leave without checking out the homemade pies. My favorite is the lemon meringue. Had a quick lunch at this friendly spot the other day and I enjoyed very much. I just had fish and chips, with a side of cole slaw. The chips were super crispy and hot - big portion. The fish was absolutely the star. It tasted so fresh and tender and perfect. I absolutely LOVED it. The batter was good, but didn't really hold up to the fish, if that makes sense? I am used to picking up a piece of fried fish and eating it with my hand. The batter, however, did not let me do that because it was not firm enough to let someone hold on to a piece without it drooping and breaking. It was good! But I had to eat my fish with a fork, which was fine, but I love biting into a crispy battered English-style cod. This is a very small complaint though, because I really did love the fish. I did not like the tartar sauce, though. It was savory rather than acid with dill pickles. I would have loved a more traditional tartar sauce. Apparently this tartar sauce is their "famous" tartar sauce, so other people like it and maybe this is you! It isn't for me, though. The fish by itself is lovely. What an amazing find! I originally was going to a different place for dinner but they turned out to be closed for the holiday weekend so I found Betty's pretty last minute. It was in this tiny strip mall like plaza and had only about 2 cars in the parking lot when I pulled up. I walked in and wasn't sure what to expect but it turned out to be wonderful! The menu is pretty straight to the point so it was easy to narrow down what I wanted. I also learned they didn't open until 4pm- and I got there around 4:30 which is why there weren't that many cars when i came. However as i sat there they filled up very quickly! I started off with the clam chowder which was good, not too salty- which is how most other places make it, but here it was nicely seasoned. I wish it was a little warmer but that was a minor thing. I also got the Betty's special which is fish, prawns, scallops, chips and coleslaw. It was definitely a very big portion that i could not finish. It came out super hot and fresh. I was stuffed so I didn't order anything else but the waiter brought me a mini apple pie on the house. He said they were closed for the next two days so they were just giving them out. It was a very nice surprise though because I had also noted they had a big selection of award winning pies so glad I was able to try it. I heated it up at home with some ice cream and it was delightful. Not too sweet, and the apple was perfectly textured, soft but you could still feel the chunks, but it wasn't too chunky. Went to Betty's for an early dinner. Got there at 4:30 before the rush. We ordered (4 of us) and got our drinks, didn't order any apps. Waited. Noticed it start to fill up and we're talking and just enjoying. But then we see tables that had come in after us already eating. Weird. Starts to get busier. Can't catch the waiter's eye to ask what's happening. (We're in a booth, not hidden, not outside.) Finally at 6:00, we've had enough and my husband gets up to go ask what's going on. 90 minutes after we arrived. They don't apologize. They give us stink eye looks from the kitchen. They tell him "we're going to start your order now." Hell no you're not. We're leaving now. So we pay for our drinks and get out of there. Outrageous. Won't be back. Response to owner: I think we're going to disagree on some of the details but you do seem to remember some of what happened that evening. Unfortunately it WAS 90 minutes after we arrived though, as we left right around 6pm. (I don't know what time the server put in our order to the system though.) He did start to get busy closer to 5 as I mentioned, so it may have delayed him. I have no idea. I WILL say that if you had been plating our food, we would have eaten it. We always order takeout from Betty's, and have found it reliable over the years. My wife likes their 1-piece or 2-piece fish & chips. Semi-pro tip: if ordering late, it's possible that Betty's will give larger pieces of fish, in its effort to get rid of the day's cod. My go-to used to be their shrimp & jack cheese sandwich, til they stopped offering it during pandemic. Then it was the crab and jack, until that became one of the most expensive items on their menu. Now I order the calamari rings & tentacles. I do order extra cocktail sauce, because their standard is one partly filled container. The constant through these changes for me has been subbing coleslaw for chips. Bettys coleslaw is unusual, in that they mix in pineapple tidbits - and it's wonderful! Ordering to go is only over phone, no online, so it is required to talk to someone. But they are nearly always accurate in taking the order, and food is prepared quickly most of the time. I have tried and tried and tried to give Betty's Fish and Chips another chance, but after trying again today, June 4th, my review remains the same after joining a few friends. I sat down with two other guests, and the overall experience was disappointing from the start. What made it even more frustrating is that the restaurant was not even busy. At most, maybe 20% to 25% of the tables were occupied. And if you have been to Betty's, you know it is not a very big place and does not have a lot of seating to begin with. So when only a small portion of the tables are occupied, there really is no excuse for inattentive service, long waits for refills, or finished plates sitting on the table for 20-plus minutes. The server ( lady) on staff seemed flustered, overwhelmed, and honestly uncaring toward basic guest needs. I am not a needy customer, but I do expect the occasional refill on my beverage and for finished plates not to be left in front of me long after I am done eating. Unfortunately, this simply is no longer the place to be. The fish, like my last visit, was even worse this time. It was soggy, had an off taste, and did not have the sweet, fresh flavor it used to have. The batter had a burnt smell to it, almost like the oil was old or had been used too long. That is very disappointing, especially for a restaurant built around fish and chips. If you are going to run a restaurant, you need to have sufficient staff on hand and maintain the quality that customers expect- especially in a smaller place where the dining room was only about a quarter full. A few other concerns from this visit: The fish no longer tastes fresh or consistent. The batter is not light and crisp like it used to be....soggy The oil flavor comes through too strongly. Beverage refills were not offered in a timely manner. The overall atmosphere feels like it has declined. The desserts.... omg.... are also not the same anymore. Items that used to feel homemade, are now average. BETTY'S has lost the CHARM, CARE, and CONSISTENCY it once had. I really wanted Betty's to be better, but after multiple attempts, including today's visit, I can't say this is a place I would recommend right now. read more

The dining room is charming...similar to an old-school diner with a smiling waitress and wonderful, kind fish chef. We ordered just a small order and split it. It was plenty big for two! The fries are delicious and crispy. The fish was fresh, mild, and delicate. Our fish order wasn't very crispy, but that may have been due to the take out moisture. Betty has quickly become my go to fish and chip place in Santa Rosa. Fish: They use a higher quality fish that flakes apart when you bite into it, which makes the experience enjoyable. Fries: Their fries are fried extra crispiness. Cole Slaw: the cabbage is so crispy and they put pineapple in their coleslaw, which sounds weird, but actually as a very refreshing flavor. It is also more on the sweet side. Fish tacos : Personal favorite I love getting their fish tacos because of the combination of coleslaw with tomato and corn salsa on top of the fried fish and a warm tortilla with a little smear of guac is absolutely divine. Lemon Cloud: Should not pass up the lemon cloud pie. The crust seems to be fried because it has such distinct crunch. The filling is creamy and lemony, and the whipped cream on top is fresh cream, which really adds to the flavor. Bread Bowl Clam Chowder: This is easily one of the biggest bread bowls I've ever gotten. Be prepared to call this and entrée or expect to split with someone else if you're looking order something else. as for the clam chowder itself, it was good but not as good as Spud Point's clam chowder in Bodega Bay. Deck Hand cost $25.95 that came with stale fries, ONE pathetic looking small piece of cod with hardly any batter on it, ONE prawn and ONE scallop that all over cooked. The clam chowder were THICK heavy in flour and hardly anything in it. And hot chocolate was not so great either! It tasted like hot water and chocolate syrup mixed. Total bill was nearly $50! Credit must go to owners Danny and Cassidy who purchased the venerable local business within the past year, and gave the place a more updated look and made sure their signature recipes would stay the same, so that their loyal fans from both sides of the pond could stay dedicated to their hearty servings of not only deep fried goodness but healthier and trendier food options, such as avocado sandwiches and fish tacos. What brought me and a friend here for a quick lunch, was while in between wine tastings on a recent weekend afternoon, we were both famished and knew we needed a little sustenance if we were to continue with our wine tasting afternoon. With my friend being a British national themselves, I knew we had to try the best Fish N' Chips that Sonoma County had to offer, as only they would know if this option was truly good enough to be considered authentic "English-style" Fish N' Chips. Since Betty's Fish & Chips is located in a small strip mall on the corner of the Sonoma Highway and Streamside Drive, there was plenty of parking in their small lot when we arrived. Arriving in the middle of the lunch hour, they were busy but not too slammed as there was a booth still available to sit at. But by the time we left, Betty's Fish & Chips was the happening place, as all of the tables were full and there were people sitting outside of their restaurant. The menu at Betty's Fish & Chips is separated into categories including Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Cold Sandwiches, Fish N' Chips, Grilled Sandwiches, Sea N' Chips, Children's Menu, Side Orders, Betty's Desserts and Beverages. Since we were here to eat with limited time, we knew we wanted their signature Fish N' Chips and their Medium sized order with two pieces of Icelandic cod served on a bed of French Fries and a side of their new dirty tartar sauce, which is their secret sauce made with freshly chopped dill pickles. We knew that wouldn't be enough to share on its own so we also decided to order their Calamari Rings and Tentacles, which is served with cocktail and tartar sauce. Once our meal was brought out, rather immediately mind you, I let my friend go through her piece of cod first, and it came with her stamp of royal approval, as she found the batter they used the perfect texture and taste. With our calamari we didn't find any piece gummy at all, as each ring was crispy with every bite. We had a great time at Betty's Fish & Chips, taking in this old seaside vibe right here in the heart of the valley. You could tell that a lot of locals like this place, as the place was buzzing with activity. Our total bill was a little over forty dollars before gratuity was added in, which was reasonable considering how much food we received this afternoon, and how satiated our appetites were after feasting on this rather quick meal. It was the perfect in-between with all of the wine flowing around these parts. I cannot wait to come back to Betty's Fish & Chips, as their New England Clam Chowder and Cod Burger seem like the perfect meal on a cold winter's day. And to end a meal with their signature Lemon Cloud Pie seems like stepping in between both sides of the Atlantic with a hearty meal in England, both old and new, so to speak. At Betty's Fish & Chips they have been carrying on an important legacy for over half a century, and with their continued success, I don't see that being impeded anytime soon. Betty's is all about fish and seafood (and pies). Sure there are other items on the menu but why bother. The fresh fish is Icelandic Cod that dipped in batter and fried to a dark golden brown. Very fresh tasting, not at all "fishy". There are various sizes to the portions, 2-5 pieces of fish and each comes with a heap of chips (fries) . A delicious coleslaw made with pineapple can be substituted for the chips. Not sure what size to order we both ordered the two piece portion mine with that coleslaw, my wife's with chips. It was plenty for dinner that afternoon. Besides the Icelandic cod you can get shrimp, scallops and other seafood in either a sandwich or a plate for lunch or dinner. The restaurant is on the small side, there are several tables and a few booths and also a few tables outside. We wanted to sample Betty's famous lemon pie but we were too full. Got there early at 4:30pm and got last booth (they have 5 booths and 4 tables). A case where nostalgia lets you down. As a long-time resident who ate at the original Betty's and every owner since (current owners are 5th) we decided to go after not having been for last 2 years. Prices went up a bit ($25 for 2 piece meal) which is fine given all food prices went up everywhere. Place got busy and after getting food waiter never came back. Had to walk to counter for refill on soda. Fish was good, decent portion. Fries were just ok. The big complaint (which is actually petty, but on principle not ok) was when the bill came we were charged for 2 extra cocktail sauce that I asked for. How much would you think a thimble of cocktail sauce cost (should be $0 when you spend $100 on 4 plates of 2 piece fish n chips)? Try $4 ×2= $8 for two tiny sauce. Thats 8% of the food cost. Not only was that extremely tacky, but the waiter did not say "hey just to let you know we charge $4 per cocktail sauce thimble". Regardless gave him a decent tip (btw bring cash or you pay extra 5% for merchant fees if you use credit card/ debit). Bottom line, mediocre dining experience, bs hidden costs, and new owners just lost any future business and Im sure we are not the only ones. Too bad. read more

We have always had a great meal at Betty's, and as there is new ownership (ex employee) we went back to see what if any changes we'd notice and whether things were still good. First thing you notice is they are now doing table service rather than just counter service and they do it well; friendly and attentive but not overly so. Prices seem similar as is the ambiance and decor but the food just may have improved a tiny bit! Fries seemed "better" to me not sure why but they were excellent, though they weren't bad before. Fish is outstanding as usual and they seem to have added a bit more dill to the tartar sauce which is nice. Overall things have improved a bit which is hard thing to have pulled off!
