Just had our first visit and it blew us away. First of all, we went on a Monday night and the reservations were fully booked, but we decided to try stopping in, which turned out to be smart, because they could seat us almost right away in the bar dining room, which was spacious and didn't feel like a bar area. They even accommodated my request not to be in sight of the TV. We were with my husband's cousin from Maui, an international traveler/diner, so he wanted to go all out, which meant we ordered the two specials - a dry aged porterhouse (T-bone) and a wagyu steak (not sure which cut), both medium rare. We got the bearnaise sauce and the green peppercorn sauce. I had one bite of each side or the t-bone, so NY and filet mignon, and two bites of the wagyu, which turned out to be my favorite. The reason I only had a those few bites of such exquisite, melt in your mouth meat was because of the irresistible courses we had leading up to it - wedge salad with tender diced bacon and pungent blue cheese dressing, potato skin fondue (like an elevated bacon nacho cheese dip), mussels in a flavorful broth that we sopped up with the addicting (on the house) bottomless basket of butter garlic parsley topped rolls (texture of Hawaiian rolls but not sweet). Then there was the scrumptious four cheese mac n cheese. I had to hold off on the giant onion rings (just ate the inside of one) to save room for the steak. We somehow also had drinks and dessert - I finished the first (which they made tart like I requested) and only tasted the last - a pineapple cheesecake, while my husband and his cousin demolished the rest along with creme brulee. Service was excellent and well timed. My husband's cousin said he hadn't expected the food to be so stellar, but that it even surpassed the swanky steakhouse we had gone to with him in SF on his last visit. We told him we weren't that surprised since we really like the other Stark restaurants we've been to, but this was the piece de la resistance. Then this person came over and started lecturing us for sitting down. We will never be back so rude. We had only been there once and walked right in and sat down in the lounge. We thought that the way it worked. This Employee didn't even take the time to ask or listen. It was so juvenile like a little kid stomping their feet. What a great place to go right before seeing a show at the 6th Street Playhouse! Location is off downtown near the train tracks. The ambience felt like a good, old-fashioned steakhouse. Made me want a ribeye, which I bet is probably amazing. But since we only had time for light bites and a cocktail, we took full advantage of their Happy Hour Menu. A few small plates to choose from and some handcrafted cocktails along with beer and wine, and a free-spirits fruity mocktail. Service was excellent! Our waiter was attentive and courteous. We were always checked on and our table was always cleared as more food or drinks arrived. We ordered: Kiwi Bloom cocktail - What a gorgeous cocktail! Don't let her looks deceive you. It was delicate and refreshing but packs a punch! (This was not on the happy hour menu.) Spicy Hummus - Nice flavor and not too spicy. The pita chips were seasoned and complemented the dip perfectly. Crispy Calamari - Small little pieces with an even amount of tentacles, my favorite! Came drizzled with a sweet orange glaze so no need to dip it in anything. Prime Rib Banh Mi Sandwich - not quite Vietnamese enough but it was good. Not so Mini Burger - delicious. Truffle Fries - the aroma alone makes you want more. Tuna Tartare Tacos - I like the presentation. The tuna was seasoned but I felt like I needed acid or to dip in ponzu sauce. Oysters on the Half Shell - Kumamoto: - fabulous and fresh! Loved the cilantro mignonette. Caesar Salad with Fried Calamari - HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE DISH OF THE EVENING! Perfectly dressed whole romaine lettuce heart leaves with perfectly crisped and seasoned calamari. This was soooooo good! I've never ordered a Caesar this way nor have I ever seen it on the menu at any restaurant before. I would order this again and again! (This was not on the happy hour menu either.) Some on here have described Stark's happy hour as best in class for Santa Rosa. It might be the only happy hour I've enjoyed in Santa Rosa but still, I agree. After a few aborted attempts to lunch elsewhere I remembered that I'd always heard good things about Stark's and it immediately became the chosen venue. Starving by this point, we arrived around the start of happy hour (3-6pm Monday-Friday) which, frankly, sparked joy. It's here, during that time, from a lovely table in the popular bar, that you can get a Beefeater Martini for $6 (limit: 2 per person). You can also get a lot of well-priced food to accompany that martini so I did that as well: oysters (3 for $7), Truffle Fries ($7), a "Not-So-Mini Burger" ($10), a Prime Rib Banh Mi (($9, more like just a small sandwich featuring prime rib), and something chocolatey and luscious to finish things off. By the time we left, Stark's bar area was full. Everyone knows and supports what's going down here. Stark's, I observed, runs like a very well-oiled machine: there's ample staffing, all are on their game, friendly, efficient, good food, nice presentation, pleasant surroundings, and just 100% top-notch all-around. We celebrated my husband's 40th here! At first I was a bit dismayed because we were seated in the corner and I wanted to make this day special for my husband. So i said, they better have great food! Our server tho made us very special and was very cheerful, attentive and friendly! We ordered steak (must!) with blue cheese butter and steak sauce on the side. Mac And cheese, so asparagus, mussels which I loved so much! We split everything! Then our cocktails were so refreshing and i had a 2nd one! By far one of the food highlights of our trip. I booked a reservation for the Friday before Valentine's day. When we arrived, there was a 45 minute wait, but we were immediately seated with our reservation. From the outside, this place looked like an old diner, and the surrounding neighborhood was not the best. But I was pleasantly surprised by just how beautiful the inside of the restaurant was. Our host was amazing. Throughout the entire meal, she was kept checking on us and offer great suggestions on sharing. My wife and I were sharing our steak and they offered to have the steak precut in the kitchen. This was very appreciated. Everything on the menu is à la cart, and just as our waiter suggested all of the sides were large enough to share. The food was amazing. Our prime rib was cooked to absolute perfection. We decided to start our Christmas vacation at a fancier spot and Stark's did not disappoint. Positives: -service was definitely a highlight as much as the food that was served. We came a little early and they accommodated us earlier than our reservation time. Our waiter enthusiastically described for us the nights specials and was very knowledgeable of the menu. Throughout the night they made sure our water was topped and that our experience was memorable. -food was amazing from beginning to end. The free bread is great, but beware it will fill you up. Even the side of rice was delicious, me and my wife couldn't stop eating it. We want to recreate rice like that ourselves at home. The crispy calamari was a pleasant surprise as it had some Asian flavors that we did not expect. For our main dishes I got the prime rib and my wife got the scallops. Both were great, my prime rib was cooked to perfection (mid rare) and very tender. Negatives: -given this the type of fare and the fancy atmosphere; you would be expected to pay a little more. I've been wanting to try this restaurant, I noticed it on Yelp when I moved here. We decided to dine after the HenHouse event. Everyone who served us was outstanding. The food OMG yes we need to repeat history again. We both enjoyed our meals, the bread and butter melted in my mouth. My friend enjoyed her steak, it was juicy and tender. Hands down one of the best steakhouse experiences I've ever had. The prime rib and ribeye were cooked perfectly--juicy, flavorful, and just melt-in-your-mouth good. The sides weren't just fillers either--the mashed potatoes were creamy, the broccolini had the right crunch, and the garlic bread... oh my god, that garlic bread was next level. Add in the bone marrow (rich, decadent, absolutely worth it) and I was in heaven. The drinks were on point too--elegant, well-crafted, and they just screamed class. The service, although they were pleasant enough, was very slow. We had to flag our waiter down to get and pay for our meal, and at that point we were already underwhelmed and frustrated. I ordered a caesar salad (which was amazing!) with a side of truffle fries. My mom ordered the fried calamari with a side of Asian crispy rice. They also brought out the house made garlic bread. This would've been fine but the bread was lukewarm and given that it took a good amount of time for it to hit our table I was expecting it to be hot and fresh. My caesar salad was pretty solid. The dressing was very garlicky and they really loaded me up on the croutons and cheese. My mom unfortunately did not care for her fried calamari. She said it tasted almost sweet because of the orange sauce that they used instead of savory like most fried calamari dishes. She did enjoy their Asian crispy rice though. We've been dining at Starks for years. This past visit, was so disappointing. It's so obvious they are cutting down on their ingredients while the prices have gone up. Dishes we've enjoyed for years such as the kale salad, butterfish, calamari, New York strip a simple filet were just not the same. The kale salad use to be a definite favorite. It completely missed the mark this time. The butterfish had a few mushrooms thrown on the plate, they use to be plentiful. Cattleman's does a better job with the steaks than Starks did at half the price. The calamari seemed way more heavily breaded than it ever use to be. Even the garlic bread didn't seem the same. I was really excited to try Stark after moving closer, and I had heard good things already. I would personally call myself a good judge of red meat, and I'm a sucker for a prime rib cut. I was ecstatic that they still had some cuts in stock. They also started us off with some fabulous cocktails and garlic butter bread that was mouth watering. The prime rib came in a dish of au jus that was delicious and a good amount. I got the bigger cut, and it was worth every penny. I have the say the service was terrific- everyone was really genuinely kind, and the ambiance was upscale without being pretentious or feeling like you need to dress to the nines. I have been to the House of Prime Rib a few times in SF, and I have to say the service at Stark's was a little more personable for what I prefer, and the food a similar excellent quality. I'm already excited to go again and would high recommend it if you're a meat fan. read more

I am only doing 4 stars because when our server carded one of my friends they quizzed her and just made it awkward. Unless quizzing you when you are asked for an ID at a restaurant is the norm, which I don't think it is because I wasn't quizzed and I was asked for an ID too, I don't think that was right. Holy yum, this was one of the best steakhouses I've ever been to. We had a late reservation at 8:30, and they closed at 9. The kitchen stayed open until probably 9:15, so we had to make some decisions. Our server Bryce was great, didn't rush us but made sure we knew we had to place our orders in time. Since it was late, I wasn't sure if they had any more prime rib left but thankfully they did, and I got the last one. It was incredible, so tender and barely needed the horseradish because the aus jus was so flavorful on its own. My friends and I also got the Caesar salad and the artichoke dip, which is served inside an artichoke and you use the leaves as the dip. We didn't realize that from reading the menu so it was a surprise when it came out. We also got bread that was soft, pillowy, and so buttery. We also shared the mashed potatoes and asparagus with our entrees since they're all served a la carte. The mashed potatoes are insanely rich, buttery, and creamy. We ordered 2 to share between 4 people but I think 1 would have been sufficient. The asparagus was lemony and cheesy, but not too rich. Even though we each had a huge entree, we had to get dessert. These were so good. We got the flourless brownie, the cheesecake with poached pears, the lemon cake, and the crème brûlée that came with caramel and bacon popcorn. They were all amazing but I think the fan favorites were the flourless brownie and cheesecake. So if you're not gluttons like us, get one of those 2 and you'll be set. Although some of the steak cuts are pricey, I think it's actually not crazy expensive considering how large those cuts are and for the quality. I mean it's a steakhouse, it's not going to be cheap but for the quality, service, and ambience, I'd say it's worth it. read more

Alfred is an angel; he is an absolute sweetheart. Every time I see him, he smiles. It warms my heart because I know he will take great care of me and whoever is with me. This is one of my all-time favorite spots, especially for happy hour. Start with the tuna tacos on the happy hour menu and the calamari on fire. A lot of people seem to like the potato skin. It has potato slices, and then you dip it in like a cheese sauce, it's like a big crowd pleaser, not for me, so much. I'm not that big of a fan of a potato, but I certainly have to understand why everybody else seems to love it . Happy hours are from 3 to 6. If it's either Thursday or Friday, you had better get behind here early, or you could forget it. You'll be sitting on a waitlist, and if you come late enough, you could be waiting quite a while, and all I can say is the food is good. The service is good. I dig the ambience here. It's super old-school classy and has all this fantastic history, they display old pictures of the buildings with people from the early 1900s, maybe or late 1800s. I've come here for a steak dinner with my husband for some romance. I've come here many times for a happy hour with my friends, and I can only say it never disappoints. Have a Caesar salad where you can put steak; it is delicious, but they also have excellent steaks. Forget about going to get other steak places anywhere else. This is the place to be, and my favorite is the ribeye, so damn good, and I don't know if you've ever tried it. They have a rice dish with a miso sauce on it. It is delicious and perfect with that steak. I can't get enough of the sauce, so dang good! The best last dinner for our honeymoon! Shout out to Rebecca at Monti's - we had reservations but their pipes burst so they rescheduled us before needing to cancel. To make it up, they helped us book at a sister site, so we chose Starks. It was AMAZING. Our waiter was super nice and funny, and brought us champagne to celebrate. Went here for a work event. The food was absolutely delicious. I had steak, mashed potatoes, broccolini, and a side salad. Everything was mouthwateringly delicious. The staff was friendly, courteous, and patient with our group. They were very accommodating, and our tables were nice, allowing us to be conversational with each other without being too loud. Well , my experience was unexpected. Let me start with the venue . The restaurant is beautiful . Well appointed and had the distinction of being in the west end where the building used to house a well known and long time Italian restaurant. The wait staff were awesome . Problem? Food! We all started with a wedge salad . It was quite good but there wasn't a choice of a dinner salad with say a ranch or thousand island dressings . Not everyone likes blue cheese or Caesar dressing . Salad options were limited. All of us ordered the ribeye and here is where the problem started. The steak (choice) was a good size for the price but it had no crust or flavor . None of us could taste any beef flavor at all. The steaks were cooked to everyone's choice but again no flavor. My choice of sauce was green peppercorn. It came in a demitasse cup. At first I thought it was a mistake as there wasn't a thing in it. It looked like chicken broth. When I asked the waitstaff if there was a mistake she said no , that the peppercorns were crushed in the sauce. I couldn't detect what the base for the sauce was. Let alone see any peppercorn crushed or otherwise. Ummm ok. No specks no cream , no peppercorns , I left it in the cup because it too had no flavor . My side of mashed potatoes was decent. Two other companions said the same thing about the steak but also did not eat their sauces. It was a wine sauce. It had a distinctive odd taste. It too was left on the table. Additionally , they ordered onions and mushrooms. The sautéed onions were oily , cool and not appetizing. Mushrooms ? You guessed it. Weird flavor and after taste . The 4th companion had the cream sauce with Dijon mustard . That seemed to be a better choice all around. I'm well aware of the reputation of this restaurant and wholeheartedly support the experience provided by this restaurant but it was a big miss on the steaks. Considering the prices this did not make for an enjoyable dinner. I guess it's back to searching another steakhouse . I wish them well ! read more

My boyfriend and I wanted to come to Starks early to go for Happy Hour. It was easy to find parking right outside the entrance to the bar and we were quickly seated around 4:30 pm. We had ordered two bahn mi prime rib sandwiches, the onion rings, and the ahi tuna tacos to snack on while sipping on their HH red and pina coolada. While the bahn mi is probably the best tasting out of all the things we ordered, we were sorely disappointed that we paid $9 for half of a sandwich. While we are knowledgeable about HH foods being on the smaller side, we couldn't justify paying that much for a sandwich with barely any meat. The ahi tacos we've had before but forgot how flavorless they are where we needed to ask the waiter for soy sauce to get any umami. Lastly, the thing that convinced us to go elsewhere for happy hours was the onion rings. After taking a bite out of one as soon as it got to our table, we quickly realized and agreed that it felt and tasted under fried, underwhelming, and flavorless. While I enjoy Starks for their steaks in the main dining room, I think I'd skip out on happy hour. read more

I've been to Stark's several times over the last few years. I come for the excellent steak, and typically get wine with my meal. On a recent visit, I tried one of the cocktails I've been hearing about. I wasn't disappointed! I ordered the Day at the Spa cocktail and it was delicious! Wish I could have had more than just the one! I'll be ordering that again on a return visit, and trying some of the others! read more

Now this was truly an excellent dining experience! We came here for dinner as we were staying very close by (the La Rose Hotel is only a couple of blocks away). Our server was friendly and helpful and the venue is beautiful, very "steakhouse'ish" in décor and all the service there was great. The menu is loaded with many incredible options and some funny notes too. If you're lucky enough to get there while they still have some of the day's smoked prime rib, I'd suggest giving it a try! In my case, I asked about it immediately and learned they had enough for 3 more portions, so I reserved one. We started with their shrimp cocktail and I generally always ask for extra horseradish and many places have wimpy, mild horseradish - Will, this isn't one of those places! Their horseradish was LEGIT! It was so potent, it's the spiciest I've ever had, even more so than Eddie V's Atomic Horseradish! Definitely flavorful and worked great on those perfectly steamed, large shrimp! The entrees here were incredible too! The scallops were a thing of beauty and that prime rib was incredible! The smoke on it was perfect and offered the nicest hint of flavor. The mashed potatoes tasted great in the jus too! Save room for dessert, they have a very nice dessert menu!
