There have been several times that I've been able to stay at the Mandarin Oriental in Boston. It's a beautiful hotel. Sometimes I feel like the front desk is a little snobby and not very welcoming. I think it's because people come in that are not guests at the hotel and they obviously don't like that. At the front desk, they have tea available upon arrival. I like that warm touch. In the lobby right now, they have Tibetin singing bowls and I enjoyed playing them every day while I was here. I wanted to give them five stars because it is an exceptional hotel, however when I went to check out and ask them to hold my luggage, it was a big production. It was not as easy as it should've been. I had to show them my room key and prove that I was staying there. It was awkward. I was in town for my daughter's college graduation and there were lots of people coming and going. Overall, we really enjoyed our visit and I would stay here again. read more

The check-in process was not as smooth and seamless as expected, and we had to wait a few hours for the room to get ready. But overall we had a great experience at this property. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room service menu has a lot of options and is actually tasty. The staff is great and so accommodating and hospitable. And we had a spa appointment that was out of this world. We used the steam room before our massages. And our massages were so relaxing We also really needed a late checkout since our flight was later on in the day, and the front desk accommodated our request. They took care of us and our every need. The Mandarin hotel was a great stay. The rooms were spacious and felt truly luxurious. This hotel fails in a simple way that its sister properties in New York, London etc. do not. This property rations their air conditioning. It's a technique common in 2/3 star hotels with centralized HVAC: the system shuts down during "sleep" hours. The room will not get cold and there's no point in protest or calling the engineer. It 's a cost-saving gimmick. Makes for a miserable sleep. Every. Time. Staff is very good. Energy is meh. Location is great. The food is mediocre. Rooms beautiful. But the deal breaker to me is the climate. read more

The Mandarin Oriental is a true five star hotel. The staff from the valet to the management are very attentive and accommodating. The hotel itself is lovely, the lobby is spacious with fresh tea or a cold water as you check in which is quick. Our room was immaculate, spacious and comfortable. The housekeeping staff were truly impressive. Mid day and turn down service with attention to detail. A bookmark was left atop my latest read, curling iron cord wrapped with a velcro strap, small things perhaps but I appreciated every gesture. The concierge guided us throughout our stay with recommendations from tours to restaurants, he was excellent and the Mandarin did well in employing him. Zero noise on our floor, slept well. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the spa! It's something to talk about! Complete pampering, and yet again welcoming and accommodating. We enjoyed every moment of our stay and would most definitely recommend to tourists and locals who want a few days away. Boylston street is full of great restaurants and shopping, and the location couldn't be better. The hotel has a private entrance to the Prudential which was a bonus. My best friend from residency wanted to visit Boston for a 3 day weekend. As a local and a resident, I had to show her wassup. I'm a true believer of go "big or go home". I can't and I won't settle for less than a 5 star hotel for her! I have to say, MO did not disappoint! The price point is high, may cost an arm and a leg for a night, but it's definitely a luxurious stay! We were greeted so warmly upon arrival. You can definitely feel the upscale vibe just entering the lobby! Great amenities: -- 24 hour gym -- Free Spa access (we found out too late on the second night) must require you to bring a bathing suit! -- Front staff can get you a table at Ramsey's kitchen -- room service -- 24 hour front desk -- complimentary coffee in the morning -- seamless check in and out! My wife and I recently celebrated our 15th anniversary here. We have stayed at other luxury boutique hotels in Boston and I have to say this first. I did not know what a luxury boutique hotel were until we stayed here. This is the city we fell in love in and now live in NJ and visit once or twice a year for games, shopping , etc. this is a trip we will NOT EVER forget. The staff and hotel are AMAZING IN every way. They have made us so comfortable, and felt so special while we are here I had to write immediately about this experience. We will not stay anywhere else again. Not anywhere else!!!!! Beautiful fursnishings, great views and staff who walk you to the hotel at check in, they knew it was a special anniversary and made multiple special moments for us including a beautiful, thoughtful keepsake heart shaped map of the city for us to take home which will be hung up in our home as an incredible reminder of this trip and this hotel. If you choose any other hotel in Boston I believe you are making a mistake. Update 2024 stay. Just a little bit less awesome. No turn downs, not as attentive, valet damage which everyone will point out is not the hotels fault but scratches are scratches and it's "my fault" they caused the damage. read more

It was a blessing for me to get to stay here at my visit in Boston. It was located in a very good location. It's easy to get to anywhere and so many restaurants, and sightseeing place by walking distance. We also had breakfast here and the food was delish. We also get to use the robot for the room service.. it was very interesting. They have two very sweet Golden here and I love them! Most luxurious hotel I've been to. When I checked in, the front desk upgraded me to a larger room. Oh my. A walk in closet. A huge bathroom. The deepest soaking tub I've seen in a hotel room. The welcome chocolates and lemon poppy cake on the coffee table. The Nespresso machine. The thick bathrobes. The gym with the cucumber water and moist toilettes. The complimentary hot chocolate and beignets at the lobby. And having Gordon Ramsays restaurant as the in-house dining option was a fantastic bonus! Our room was very solid value for the price and the service and dedication of all of the staff members was very impressive and nice. One of the main downsides, though was the ambiance. The hotel in general was pretty dark- it almost felt like a sort of cave, even in the common areas with windows it still felt dark, on the sunniest of days. The breakfast was solid, although nothing special. The main benefit of this hotel was the location, located in the heart of back bay. Overall this hotel is solid bang for your buck, but definitely nothing to go out of your way for. read more

My spouse and I had a great getaway here for one night. Overall, 4.5 out of 5 stars. During the pandemic, bars and restaurant were closed, but we know this going in to booking it. We'd heard very nice things from colleagues and friends when thinking about the high-end hotels in downtown Boston. Plus, there were some good AmEx deals, so the choice was easy. The highs was the service, location, and amenities. Everyone from valet, to front desk staff, to housekeeping, to concierge, to in-room dining was professional and went out of their way to be helpful and accommodate. In-room dining was responsive, fast in delivery, and very high quality items. We loved the downtown area and walkability. Great perks here and nice bath products. Lows were the sadness of the pandemic shutting down so much. The rooms are a bit dated despite the high end prices, and, while this isn't that different than other high end places in Boston (everything's old!), still a little disappointing. The spa waitlist was challenging to get on but they attempted to fit us in. There's a 2-week out booking solid and think this is true even in non-pandemic times. It's only open Thursday-Sunday and the online booking platform could be better. We'd recommend to friends and family and may be back! read more

We had an amazing six-night stay at the Mandarin Hotel in Boston! The location was terrific, walkable to numerous restaurants, Newberry Street and other shopping areas. The Ramsay's Kitchen onsite was terrific with excellent food and service. The rooms were well appointed and offered an oasis of calm which we especially appreciated during our busy trip. Above all, we were very grateful to room director Martina who went above and beyond in taking care of us and addressing any concerns in a thorough and gracious manner. She had turned us into loyal customers of the brand, and we will definitely look for Mandarin Hotel in our future trips! read more

We have been staying quite a few times over the last four years. The rooms are comfortable but a bit tired. The toilet paper is super thin and desintegrates when used. Also, it seems that they are having more and more conference groups. The TLC the chain is known for is not consistent. Even though they have a portfolio on us with our preferences, they didn't pay attention to it and we had to request a room change. Not fun when you are tired from a long flight. The in-room dining staff is excellent and the location is superb though. read more

I love mandarin oriental. We have stayed in a few of them. None are like the one in Vegas from years ago but I still love them. The FRETTE bedding is lovely and they have the store right in the hotel. The body washes in the spa are great ginger smell. They use eucalyptus in the steam room and orange water to drink. The hot tub area Is CLOSED. We purchased a breakfast package but the dining areas are still CLOSED. (They bring the food to your room and it takes an hour and they charge you delivery) but they set it up nicely and the food is delicious. Try the French toast. I don't even like French toast but it's amazing. Room service is by request only!! You must let them know you are requesting it. The gym is open 24 hours. The overall staff is incredible. The spa staff met me once and addressed me by name every day. The checkin staff were the same every day. I think they all live here. . They are always here. read more

I was not thrilled by the high tea service. For almost $80 per person at a 5 star hotel in an upscale neighborhood in Boston this high tea was a let down. The location is great, near public transit and walking distance of other places. The service was good. The problems we had with service was not our server fault. She was kind and very helpful along with the other staff members. The major problem with the high tea was the location within the hotel. Tea service takes place in the lobby rather than a restaurant or a private room. I would like to put in a compliant. My friends and I had high tea at the Boston location to celebrate Christmas. The experience was not great. The location of the high tea in the hotel impacted our experience and caused us not to want to return. The lobby is very loud and not private enough to dine as the doors opened and people meet up. The table were too small to hold all of the food and drinks. Then it put staff at an awkward position because guests wanted to sit and they cannot because the lobby is reserve for the service. Some guests were made but it was not the staff's fault. Then it takes forever for food and drinks to come out because it is so far away from the kitchen. It took use forever to eat and to have refills. Plus the tea was in bags not rolled tea. At $ 78.00 bucks per person before tax you can at least use tea leaves instead of bagged tea. We came here for a luxury experience and we left feeling like we wasted our money. There are other places in Boston that have better reviews and location for less money in the city. read more

I read in a Boston events calendar that the Mandarin Oriental would have festive live jazz music in their lobby, so we dropped in to listen before seeing a holiday show in the theater district. I ordered a cup of tea and was charged $17 for it -- $14 for the 10 cent tea bag, and a $3 dollar service fee. Wow. Merry Christmas to you too, folks. Next time, let's build some affordable housing downtown instead of another one of these grotesque temples to conspicuous, wasteful wealth. read more

We came here for afternoon tea... which they only run as a pop up between jan-mar daily in the lobby. We came later in the afternoon on a week day and we practically had the place to ourselves. It is about $75/pp for tea, tea sandwiches and pastries. You get to choose a tea from a selection of five-ish and you get four little sandwiches and four-six pastries. The tea was fancy, and the sandwiches and pastries were high quality but you definitely don't get a lot for your money. I would say that the food is better than the tea at l'espeliar. The service isn't quite as excellent as l'espeliar but l'espeliar is on point and it is hard to rival with them, but the lady helping us was still phenomenal. She was hilarious and one of the highlights of tea. I would come back for afternoon tea, but my favorite afternoon tea is still at the taj because I think you get more bang for your buck there and I just love the pastries at the taj. The devonshire cream here isn't as great as the one at the taj (so a little disappointed by that) but they have this amazing orange curd and it tastes just like creamsicle. It was soooo good! I recommend you checking it out if you like afternoon tea. read more

MO was pure luxury! It's in a great location right next to the Pru and Newbury St. Easy access to shopping, dining and the T. The second floor connects right into the Pru, so no worries about Boston's finicky weather and rainy days. They have a pretty extensive exercise room. It's also one of a few hotels that allows guests free spa access even without a treatment. Guest rooms are modern and spacious. They're one of the few hotels that are stocked with soft Frette linens and towels. Staff are all courteous and accommodating. At breakfast, the dining staff were superb in anticipating your needs before you have them, my very definition of luxury. MO has a house car that we used several times to get to the Opera House and to restaurants further away; excellent for when you'd rather not handle the T in high heels. I booked a package stay for a night to propose. The package included chocolate treats, a flower, late checkout and a bottle of champagne at time of arrival. The front desk did not let me know of the hotel amenities and others that normal 5 star hotels would go through at time of checkin. I go up to the room to find no chocolates, champagne... but found a half dead flower sitting on the bed. Couple days before the reservation, I requested to substitute the champagne for something else, but that request was ignored. I texted the front desk on the whatsapp app and the front desk gave me a option to which I chose a fruit platter. We recieved the fruit platter and the fruits were not only seemed unwashed... it was too shriveled to the point my fiancee and I didn't eat. The next day we had a spa appointment to which it was perfect, but felt incomplete because on the men's side the vitality pool was under renovation or construction. Overall, the spa was great... but hope to recieve better service next time with requests not ignored. read more

There is nothing better then having afternoon tea when it is freezing out. I had freshly made scones that took a while to come out but well worth it. Coming here during the holidays is a lovely experience. However, it does draw a lot of business people here since you are seated at the Mandarin Lobby. I was sitting by the Christmas tree. Note: this is just a review for the spa. Partner and I decided to splurge with the Sanctuary Couples retreat, which ran us around $660 after tax and tip for 1 hour and 50 minutes. They invite you to enjoy their spa facilities by arriving 45 minutes early. Overall, the facilities were top notch. The vitality pool was the perfect temperature with nice powerful jets, and the steam room was very steamy -- almost scarily so, as I couldn't see anything or navigate my way around, so ended up awkwardly standing by the door. The lotions and potions are all top notch -- moisturizing and luxurious -- tellingly, I only had to use 3 pumps of conditioner to get the knots out of my long hair! The service itself is quite flexible. We had two female body-workers and they were very considerate, listening to our requests and tailoring their services to what we needed. My partner got the wrap / massage, whereas I opted for a longer full-body massage followed by a head/scalp massage and facial. Everything was perfect: the pressure was firm enough to get some real work in, but not too intense so as to leave you feeling like a limp, spastic noodle. Background music was quiet and non-invasive, temperature of the bed, towels, room, etc. was warm and comforting, and the linens were soft and comfy even after hours of being pressed into them. Overall, the experience is a pricey one but I think fair, given you're getting 3 hours of pampering and using about 1,000 gallons of water and towels. Definitely a splurge, but a really nice one for once in a while! read more

We celebrated our six year wedding anniversary at the Mandarin last weekend. Three of our five past anniversaries had been celebrated at Boston hotels, which included Hotel Commonwealth, Seaport Hotel, and XV Beacon. The Mandarin Oriental surpasses them all with ease. I cannot overstate the incredible service that this hotel provides. Everyone, from the valet and door folks to the check-in persons, went above and beyond in assisting us. They really made us feel like royalty. Yes, this hotel is pricey, but it is most certainly worth it. Our room was amazing with a great view of Boylston Street, incredible lighting, lots of space, humongous bathroom, walk-in closet, and art deco furniture that we greatly admired. I actually took a video of the bathroom as inspiration for when we ever remodel our own master bath. The attention to detail was bordering on the miraculous - there were features in our room we had never seen in any other hotel. There is a reason the Mandarin is at or near the top of any best Boston hotel list you can find. my experience with the mandarin hotel in Boston was horrible. I booked a junior suite the room I was brought up to was a tiny little room with views overlooking a roof with weeds and across the way to an apartment building 30 feet away with a woman cutting onions and a man running on a treadmill looking right at me, the room was $1500. I felt like they gave me one of the worst rooms in the hotel. I went downstairs and yes, they were apologetic, but I was so insulted at that point that I decided to leave it's my second experience at the Mandarin and neither one was any good I can say this I will never stay at the Mandarin hotel in Boston again I would much rather stay at the four seasons, the Ritz Carlton, raffles, or the Newbury. I cannot believe that they wanted to charge me $1555 for what to me was no more than a Marriott courtyard room with nicer fabric. Don't waste your time don't waste your money. Have always been a fan of the MO, this property did not disappoint me again. Upon arrival, we were told that they honored our request to be on the highest floor and away from the elevator. Something sweets awaits in both rooms (amazing little brownie bites ). The front desk is amazing, as they already remember our names after few hours we are in. Every person passing by us greeted us with warm greeting. The best part of the whole experience is the new added addition of free bike rental. We took full advantage of it and biked on both days along the river. The 2 passenger shared bike is a MUST try, great for picture taking. Although it is quite slow, it is fun to share with someone. Only little "down" side is the valet people, I did not find them that friendly. Not the best experience I had in similar properties. Nevertheless, it is a great hotel with amazing location and excellent customer service. read more

Great place! The hotel staff is first class! Very engaged, helpful, and they listen to their customer's requests. Right in the heart of the activity in that it is in the center of Newbury St, a mike walk to Fenway, and only about a 15 minute ride to the north end. It seems on these types of stays at these type of hotels, there is usually one thing that is memorable above all other. Touch choice here but i would go with the linens in the rooms. In the lobby, there is a store of the Italian brand of linens that the Mandarin uses exclusively. It connected the dots for me as to how the beds were so comfortable! Interesting nonetheless. The service, I believe is what would help one choose between two premier properties, and in this case, the Mandarin wins! read more

Worse than the Marriott. I've stayed at mandarins , peninsulas, and four seasons all over the world and for $1,000 a night this place is a disaster. In the first 24 hours: our room smells like chemicals and old cigarette smoke, there are stains all over the carpet, room service delivered miso soup without miso and half frozen edamame, and I got a baked egg breakfast without the eggs. To top it all off I mentioned a severe allergy and you guessed it: they screwed up and I'm vomiting and won't give late checkout. I'm going back to the four seasons. read more

This review is for the lounge and lobby area for tea- where the Mandarin worldwide is generally known as the "go to" place. They got the "expensive!" part right. They got the "quality!" part right. They LOONED the curve on quantity..... tsk tsk. When I'm in the mood for tea at the Mandarin, anywhere in the world, I expect to pay up for world class service, premiere menu items, and uber ambience. So when I brought mom out and ordered 2 tea sets and it arrived on one 3-tiered arrangement that looked like it was barely enough to feed anorexic Barbie, I went through a very distinctive, vaguely familiar gut-wrenching disappointment that I haven't felt since 1986 when the Sox gave away the World Series in game 6. Even mom mentioned to the staff that Four Seasons's Bristol Lounge ran circles around the Mandarin on tea time (which is quite untrue elsewhere in the world), serving up at least a bountiful tea time arrangement. To be fair, though, the quality was up there, so it would be hard to cry true disappointment. Service was, as expected, par for Mandarin. The only thing I didn't like about the place was that this is the first Mandarin lounge I've been in where the place looked like an after-thought in the blue original blue prints. I usually consider a Mandarin Lounge THE trophy shelf for the rest of the hotel, but this one has none of the character that other locations are known for, and sadly, none of the tea-time ambience that the Four Seasons' Bristol Lounge has. Yes, I'll come here again, but only because it is just a block from where I live, and it's too cold right now to make the trek anywhere else. Come Spring time and Summer? Sorry. The hotel is as wonderful as it is expensive. Service is outstanding, rooms are good size and in perfect shape and condition. My favorite: on both sides of the bed there is a "Good Night" switch which turns of all lights. No noise from Boylston Street at night. We did have breakfast in the hotel and enjoyed it.
