We live in the neighborhood and have enjoyed going here for years. We got there at 8 pm. There were still quite a few people in restaurant. We were only ones to sit on patio. Food was fine as always and delivered promptly.But the complaint was the bus staff and other employees. They were all in great rush cleaning up when we got there at 8. They close at 9:00. We were still eating when a young man rushed to our table and cleared most of our dishes and bread basket which we were still eating. He didn't ask or say a word and it was 8:30. By 8:50 everyone else was gone and the staff was very busy. Since we were walking home I wanted to stop by the restroom on the way out. I met the employee with her bucket who had just finished cleaning the bathroom. When she saw I was going in, she just glared at me. I understand but I was a paying customer and I needed the restroom. I was quick and was sure to wipe up the counter top to keep clean. She came in and was quickly taking off her work clothes and again just glared at me. The trash cans were clean and empty so I ask where should put my wet paper towel. Maybe she didn't speak English. I don't know but she didn't answer me and was clearly very annoyed. I put my paper towel in my backpack and as we left the main room was like a bee hive with employees cleaning up. No one said a word to us as we left. The restaurant clock read exactly 9:00. I completely understand they were ready to leave but we felt they could have been nicer to their customers instead of acting annoyed and rude. read more

For fast nicely prepared Italian casual food this is solid choice. Bruchetta is very good. The spaggetti with meat sauce was good. The daily chicken Picatta with capers was quite good. The oil and bread they bring out is really just oil with a dusting of herbs. Now you can add salt and pepper yourself to the oil and you will want to. And that brings me to the next point. This is a very much order in line, self service type place. It is not a sit down order from a wait-person etc. They do bring the food out fast so not a sit and relax having a nice long meal type place. The model is definitely for our fast paced and serve yourself modern mindset. So if you know that going in and have places to be, then it hits the mark well. If you want a romantic or social dinner elongated event where you are pampered by waitstaff this is not that place. When you pay in advance they ask for you to put in a tip....15% or more higher options....l could not help but wondering if I should be tipping me and my fellow diners for all hard work instead. Lol. I know some of you may gasp that well the cook and the cleaning crew .... but. ... come on, when you tip at a restaurant with a real sit down waitstaff ( and this is only my POV so no haters here please, but just my pov, tipping has traditionally been for the waitstaff and is earned based on service provided ... All that being said, we will be back but next time I will still tip but at the table in cash instead... your call of course on what you elect to tip. They way they have it setup they ask to tip BEFORE you ever even sit down and see the food. Recommend not tipping at the counter, but save your tip until you complete the meal. The pasta, oh the pasta! Fresh, house-made, egg noodles smothered in the most delectable of sauces. Who ever thought of putting procuitto and peas and mushrooms with Alfredo should be kissed- on BOTH cheeks! There is no doubt I'll return. I loved it last night. Our favorite Italian restaurant in Austin. If you love bold flavors, you will enjoy this place! They serve you the most delicious garlic bread with olive oil dip as soon as you sit down. Good selection of pizza, pastas and of course dessert! Must try the many different flavors of gelato available. And the pastries are heavenly, my personal favorite are the Zucotto and Tiramisu cakes. I will be honest and say I can't comment on the restaurant side of Mandola's, as we have yet to try it. However, I can vouch for some wonderfully strong and authentic espresso and a delicious assortment of gelato and other desserts. We love to go in for coffee and dessert on a weekend afternoon. One of my very favorite flavors of gelato is the Tiramisu gelato. Like heaven in a cup! The atmosphere is "authentic Italian cafe", complete with random memorabilia on the walls and hanging salamis from the ceiling. There is always some Sinatra music playing and a bocce ball court next to the outdoor tables. There are also several tables inside, just for the dessert area. We are planning on trying the restaurant side for lunch soon and I will update my review accordingly, but right now it gets my top vote as an Italian sugar and caffeine fix. read more

She doesn't look happy to be there or to help you. She also doesn't fill your pint container or cones well. I am shocked I have never reviewed this place. They are great for what they are. I love coming here for lunch, they usually have some sort of special going on. You walk in, past an aisle of pastas and sauces and order at the counter. They will bring the food out to you. It's good, simple food with excellent flavor at a good price point. They also have so much seating, for groups of all sizes so you can go out by yourself or with a few friends. The best part, the bakery counter. It is expansive with everything from cakes to cookies to cannoli and they are all really awesome. I have never been disappointed by the bakery item. Parking is not the best. Very few spots near the actual restaurant but you can parking in the parking lot across the road and just pray you don't get hit crossing the street Frogger style. read more

Quality has taken a dive. Went there last night and ordered a pasta dish and a pizza. Pasta dish was decent but the pizza was never completely cooked as the pepperoni looked as it just came out of the refrigerator. Pizza was almost cold. Maybe it will be better once I reheat it at the house but it's doubtful. Not the place it used to be. On the good side, they can still provide a good cup of coffee and dessert. read more

We used to come here quite often for fast and tasty Italian and some bocce ball. Lately, the service has been going downhill and last week was our last visit. Poor service, rushed and frustrated staff that doesn't mind sharing that attitude with customers, undercooked food (received a pasta dish with an almost raw shrimp in it) and generally, a bummer of a time. Really bummed out as this used to be a nice, consistent spot for us. Hope the mgt. is able to pull it together again. read more

OK, I am biased. I am Sicilian American and manage the Italian Chamber in Austin. Having said that, this is the food that my family would serve. I just had the Baked Ziti tonight and it was fantastic. The sugo (sauce) tastes exactly like my great grandmother's. I know there are fancier places in town, but none more authentic and certainly none more reasonable. It is a family place where you can take your kids. Plus the prices are still very reasonable. Why go to a "fancy" place and pay $40 for a plate of lasagne when you can get it here under $20. I go here weekly and have NEVER has a bad experience. Do yourself a favor and try it. read more

This might be the most overpriced restaurant I've been to in a long time. A $12 Caesar with chicken should be big enough that I'm not still very hungry when I finish it. I can appreciate the setup--you walk in and place your order, then find your own seat. It's extremely decorated, and adds a fun lively feel to the place. They have the main room, a side room over looking the patio, and a patio with umbrellas and I believe I saw a game of some sort as well. I didn't sit in the patio, but I did sit in the little "park area" next to it (as the restaurant sits on a corner lot) to eat my gelato. Staff members were friendly and everyone seemed to be keeping busy. Only thing I would mention is the young man working in the bakery section took a big spoonful of gelato and stuffed it in his mouth. (I totally get that, I would be tempted as well, but I don't think most people eating would want to see that). Started off with a Caprese Salad which was mouth-watering. They absolutely give you a nice portion--really thick slices of tomato and mozzarella. I added prosciutto as well which was sliced so thin it was impressive. They seasoned the entire dish perfectly. Bread was so light and fluffy and also seasoned well. We went through that in about 5 minutes. I had the Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and my boyfriend had the Chicken Parmesan. My dish was very bland. Barely tasted any Alfredo, just tasted like buttered noodles with grilled chicken that also had little to no seasoning. Chicken Parmesan was much better! Perfectly crispy, a lot more flavor, but overall still a little bland. I would say I would come back and just order something else. Every dish I saw looked fantastic, mine was just underwhelming. They had an array of desserts, all of which looked delectable. I had the mixed berry gelato which was a flavorful blend of sweet and refreshing. Love this establishment for the family friendly atmosphere however Monday 5/31 it didn't feel that way. We went early for dinner, 5pm to beat the Memorial Day crowd, which the restaurant stayed nearly empty during our visit. The evening manager was unnecessarily rude about our family pushing tables together in main dining room because there was a sign that the back dining was closed. He said they don't allow reservations and customers are not allowed to push tables together. Well not sure what he expected us to do! Then when a family member walked in with a birthday cake for me, he immediately came to table and told us no outside food allowed. Mind you our family has been several times to celebrate a birthday and a cake was brought in. We have never been told otherwise. We asked when this policy changed. All the manager could say was "it's a policy". I'm very disappointed in the way this situation was handled. Not once did the manager say sorry or offered to help the situation. Half of the party didn't eat because we didn't feel welcomed! I should've asked for a refund and took my business elsewhere. Unfortunately, I will not be giving them my business! read more

The best part of the experience was the decor. I got a salad with chewy croutons. They didn't tell us our meal came with free bread when we went to order bread. The free bread reminds me of bland/dry cornbread (although my wife liked it with oil), and the garlic bread we paid for was as hard as a rock, and we couldn't even bite into it. When we got our actual meals, they were bland. I got fettuccine Alfredo, and it tasted so plain, and the Alfredo sauce was really runny. My wife got something with chicken, and the chicken wasn't even seasoned. On top of this, we paid 50 dollars for food, and no service. Don't even know why we tipped at the beginning. You stand in line, order, they bring your food, and then they forget about you. All in all: yikes. read more

Many of my family's gatherings are spent at old-school Italian restaurants back home in St. Louis, so it wasn't surprising when my dad visits Austin that we end up at an Italian market for dinner. What was surprising though, was the way that it happened - while spending quite a bit of time at my apartment complex's pool as I worked, my dad befriended a lovely older couple. After bringing them a couple of poolside beers yesterday, Marty asked my father and I if we'd like to join them for dinner that evening at their favorite spot for casual Italian fare, Mandola's. Admittedly, Italian cuisine isn't something I think about often in the hot Texas clime as generally my associations are tied to cooler weather and family celebrations... but, I jumped at the chance for my father to socialize with some friendly folks closer to his own age on his fourth day in Austin. Upon entering, I was instantly drawn to the spacious bistro's feel-good energy, the hanging meats and cheeses, the Italian wines available for purchase on-the-spot and behold... a roving accordion player! The ordering system at Mandola's is what makes it more market and less restaurant: You place your order at the counter, pay, and then your food is delivered to your table of choosing. And what a spread it was - between our oversized portions the scene looked very Last Supper-ish. My father loved his classic dish of spaghetti and meatballs and I, not being a pasta lover, opted for the Parma wood-fired pizza topped with mozzarella, provolone, prosciutto, arugula, lemon vinaigrette and shaved Parmigiano. Delicious! I was only able to put about a 30% dent into the generous pie, and will soon be noshing on the leftovers for lunch. Before leaving, make sure to try some gelato or house specialty, the traditional Tuscan zuccotto, a cake filled with pistachio, ricotta cream with candied-orange peel and finished off with chocolate. With its warm, family-friendly atmosphere and abundance of delectable dishes and toothsome treats, Mandola's is definitely a crowd-pleaser across all generations. read more

Mandola's Italian - The Parma pizza (with mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula and lemon vinaigrette) - Italian Near Me - Austin, Texas

Me: "Mandola's has a lunch menu." Michelle: "Whaa?" After driving what seemed like an eternity (3 entire minutes) to meet my friend and fellow Yelper here for lunch, I made my first pilgrimage to Mandola's. Not just this Mandola's, mind you. Any Mandola's. To make it a more arduous a trip than it already was, I parked by Costco and walked the rest of the way. I also figured that would serve as penance for what was likely to come of an Italian meal encounter. As I approached the restaurant, I was blown away by the smell of the trailer-based wood oven parked next to the take-out spaces. There was just enough chill in the air to make the breeze warm and welcoming (I'm still talking about the wood oven, mind you). I arrived a few minutes ahead of my lunch companion, so I spent a few minutes perusing their menu and looking about the market. Then I went back outside for the closest thing I'll ever have to a "smoke". Yes, more oven-sniffing. My friend arrived in no time at all, and we commenced with the counter-based ordering. I was a little disappointed that my order taker wasn't a bit more attuned to orienting a first-time customer, but we worked through it. Although I came in expecting to get a traditional Italian dish, I wound up with the roasted turkey half-sandwich and a mista salad. After getting our drinks and finding a table, we were quickly served. Homemade focaccia & herb dipping oil were quickly provided. It didn't take too much longer for our food to arrive--let's just say faster than I expected. Although I was thrilled beyond belief with the salad, I found that the sandwich was just OK. I could easily see myself doing the full mista salad with added chicken as a meal. Mind you, there was nothing wrong with the sandwich, it just wasn't memorable or stellar. The semi-waited table service was just about right and not intrusive, given their minimalist format. What I liked best about Mandola's was that it was possible for my friend and I to reacquaint without constant interruption and without being rushed. Although Mandola's had a function in progress in the adjacent party room, I don't remember it being too noisy for our casual conversation. Mandola's wasn't busy, and we certainly weren't rushed by the staff. I think I like Mandola's for casual get-togethers after this singular encounter. At the same time, II also acknowledge that the largely self-service format wouldn't translate well if you were expecting a traditional Italian meal experience. In short, I couldn't imagine going here for a dinner date. While it can be handy to get your own drink refills, it also interrupts the flow of what should be a relaxed meal and conversation. Also, the front dining environment is a bit too open, sterile, and stark for any semblance of a serious dining setting. In short, it just doesn't reek of what I expect from an Italian restaurant. While their entree prices are reasonable, once you add in the cost of adult beverages, I would expect more of an old country experience. Mandola's makes Carino's seem relatively cozy by comparison. Four-stars, but that's a lunch-only rating. read more

So, I'm half-Italian. Okay, so according to Ancestory's DNA test, I'm 28% Italian and a beautifully nice mix of lovely European races, but either way, I grew up in an Italian home full of Italian culture, so when I moved to Austin and found a restaurant that sold Italian deli meats, I was SO excited! When I lived in Shreveport, our family shopped at Maxwell's for all of our Italian foods, and when we visited New York, we stopped at all of the best Italian places that our family had been going to for years. When I lived in Mississippi, none of these things existed, so I was very excited (Whole Foods is overpriced.) I walked in for the first time, and it's all open-air! The deli is directly in front of the door; you can buy Italian meats, olives, cheeses, pastries, and coffees. The center is all round tables that seat four, and to the far left is the restaurant line. It looked like a lunch line with an active grill and pizza oven behind the counter. I didn't stay for lunch, because I was only there for deli meats today. TO THE DELI COUNTER! MAKE HASTE! Flip flops and all. I look in the case, look at the prices, and I am happy. I decide that I want my favorites: pistachio mortadella, sweet sopressata, and sweet capicola. But wait...why aren't either of these two ladies acknowledging my existence? They walk back and forth, one of them looks at me briefly and goes back to her pacing. I wonder if I'm standing in the right spot? I try standing near the cash register, then I move back to the meat counter. A few moments later, the younger woman decides to help me. I tell her that I'd like to start with 1/2lb. of pistachio mortadella. She looks at the cooler for a moment, slowly turns over a hunk of deli meat log, and then says, "We're out." "Okay. Can I get plain mortadella?" She cuts that up for me, in nicely sized slices, and it takes 5 minutes. Then, I ask for sweet sopressata. "We're out." I want my hubby butt to try my favorite meats, and he doesn't like spicy much, so I don't opt for the spicy. I ask for sweet capicola. "We're out." Despite having seen sweet versions of sopressata in the case and possibly behind her on the counter, I was ready to leave after the 10 minutes that I had been there and I was beginning to feel like they didn't want to slice any meat, so they were conveniently out. I admit, I do look young, naive, and as if I don't know things. I can understand how it would appear as if it would be easy to trick me. I was bored, so I didn't bother to ask about it. I paid my amazing price of $3.50, and the other, older woman asked if I would like them to order it. I declined, because I didn't want to have them order a full log just for me, who rarely goes shopping. She says it's no problem and gets the manager. He comes up and begins to fuss at them a little bit before he apologizes because they DO, in fact, have sweet sopressata. The universe is apparently in my favor, and I am apparently meant to have some sweet sopressata! Long story short - I felt a little unwelcome. The head chef (?) was very good to me, though. The meat was tasty, and I'll be back to try the food! read more

I've got to update my original review. My 3rd experience here is really more in-line with other reviews posted here. My family really had a piss poor experience last weekend. And while the manager attempted to make things right, I don't believe we will be returning or recommending Mandola's. I brought a bottle of wine back to our table and clumsily spilled half of it all over the table after pouring 4 glasses. (EDIT: Some twit in another review seems to think half the bottle was already consumed. If I wasn't clear, this was not the case.)Ying ran to get napkins to help me sop it up. At the same time one of the food runners/bus boys comes to our table with bread. He begins laughing at the situation, making jokes and wise cracks and standing there observing me doing HIS job. Now sure, it was my fault. I would gladly help mop up the mess, but at least he should take the wet towel out of his back pocket and make an effort to do HIS job. But, no, my mother had to ASK for the towel and she proceeded to help me clean the table while the jokes and wise cracks continued to spew out of his smirking mouth. I complained to the manager and he brought out another bottle of wine for us. Well, that's fine. That's a start. He can't very well comp our meal I guess since we had already paid. And he certainly seemed to have a concerned look on his face as I related my problem with the behavior of his employee. He was quick to point out that wasn't what Mandola's was about at all. And I believe him. But really, when something like that happens, the table shouldn't even be seeing a character like that again. The jokester returned twice later trying to clear our plates. It was just an uncomfortable experience for all. Maybe I am a hard ass, but I would have let the guy go on the spot. The grand finale to the meal was my wife finding a shard of plastic in her salad. That we didn't complain about. What's the use at that point? Goodbye, Mandola's. It was short and sweet. read more

Mandola's positions itself as an Italian Market and I'm trying to critique based on what it really is ... an "upscale" fast food chain. The restaurant is clean and offers an expansive menu of traditional Italian food favorites -- antipasi, minestrone, spaghetti, ravioli, gnocchi, pizzas and paninis -- primarily red saues (not sure that I saw any choices with white sauce) and WINE. My vegetarian panini was good; served warm and including a variety of veggies including eggplant and portobollos served with fresh mozzarella on a very fresh mult-grain bread. The restaurant tries to emulate the look and feel of an Italian market .... hmmmm..... Mandolo's is a "best in class" fast food place, kinda like an Italian Chipotle. read more

I love Italian, the wife not so much due to red sauce heartburn. Regardless, we decided to try the new Mandola's location in South Austin. For the record we live about 3 miles away from Trattoria Lisina, but usually stick to the take out pizza route rather than dining in. Its good, sometimes great, but not an everyday eatery. Mandola's seems to fix that with his version of the Italian market. The gooey bread with the herb rich olive oil dipping sauce is divine. Great layout in the south store with the rear dining area having optional open air dining and fountain. I'm totally sold on the dining experience and my choice of entree; but I see a few holes in the canoli. First, there are no lunch prices. Lasagna at the Olive Garden (yes, I'm going there) is $9. Mandola's is $12 all the time, and yes I know the quality far exceeds that crap chain; but isn't that what this place is striving to be? My Cannelloni rocked the house with chicken, pork, pork rib meat, herbs, and tasty sauce. The wife was less excited by her Trennette al Pesto thinking it was bland and needed a big garlic kick. Appetizers fared better with the Affettati, a rice ball filled with peas, procuitto, then deep fried. The red sauce that comes with the dish is full of fresh herbs producing a quaint flavor reminiscent of the old country. Did I just say that and I've never been to Italy? I have some old Ferrari pics on the laptop, so I will hold on to my worldly culinary opinions. The garlic fries are the cheapest option in the app category and are worthy of the $4 price tag. I seriously can't hate on this place. In my world Mandola's would have a goat cheese with caramelized onion pizza option like its sister restaurant in Driftwood. My fiance came here to celebrate after a long day from signing on our first house! I ordered the steak sandwich. He ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and we got a carafe of mimosa for $14! The food was great and I love that it's also a cute Italian market. My only complaint is that our 2 entrees, a salad and carafe of mimosa cost us close to $60 with tip! Craving pasta one night. Wasn't sure what was in the area, so we pulled into a random parking lot and got on our trusty Yelp app. Saw this place and decided to try it. I was a little anxious when we got there and saw the line was to the door.....but then I thought "if all these people are in line waiting, the food here must be good." We ordered a starter of the garlic fries, Fettuccini Alfredo and small Caesar salad for me; spaghetti and meatballs also with a small Caesar for my hubby. In addition, a fountain drink for him and just water for me. With tip, it was just about $60. Very reasonable in my book. We got our number, drinks and silverware and found our table. The waiter had literally been following us with our salads and bread. Oh the bread. Neither of us is a fan of focaccia but OMG with the herb oil (or even without it) it was yummy. Salads were crisp and fresh. Garlic fries next. Good but I could only eat a couple. They really do mean they are garlic fries, and I have an ulcer. Wish I didn't, because I definitely would have eaten more. Hubby really enjoyed them. The basil cream sauce with it is ah-mazing! Entrees next. Wow. My fettuccine was so good. Sauce was thick and rich, without being TOO thick and rich (like the kind where you can feel your arteries clog while eating it). I could still taste the pasta, which was cooked perfectly. Hubby really enjoyed his spaghetti and meatballs, and I even tried a bite of the inside of one (away from the red sauce). Very good. We were stuffed. I saw some reviews stating portions were too small. I disagree and think they are just right. We were full but didn't feel like we were headed for a coma or fall asleep on the way home. Then on the way out ...... Trouble in the form of the dessert area. Yeah, wouldn't you know it, a piece of their lemon cheesecake (mine) and coconut cake (hubs) apparently wanted to come home with us. We didn't get to them until the next day. Ladies, that cheesecake was curl-your-toes good. Nice and light, creamy with just a hint of lemon. We didn't stop talking about how great that meal was for 2 days. Posted on FB about it. Raved to everyone we know. Well, a few days later we decided to stop by for lunch. Asked if I could get the gnocchi with Alfredo sauce (ulcer) and there was no problem. Hubby got the sausage and pepper sandwich. The gnocchi were little pillows of fluffiness that just melted on my tongue. The manager came by to check and make sure it turned out OK because sometimes it's tricky to make gnocchi with the white sauce as it can easily seize. I thought that was as a very nice touch. So I've never had a meal here before, until today that is. It's always been a great dessert stop place, but never came around a meal time. So a friend and I decided to come venture out and try it for lunch. Prices are a bit on the higher side (I really don't understand why Italian food costs so much when pasta is so cheap...) but the food is exceptional quality. That's the only reason it's a 4 for me. My friend got the chicken parmesan, a huge pounded chicken breast, coated and fried to perfection with some sauce and fresh pasta. Very filling. I got the tortellini, a creamy sauced stuffed pasta that is juxtaposed with some sautéed mushrooms and green peas to counterbalance the richness. Yum. It's been mentioned before, but the bread here is phenomenal. Think focaccia like with a crisper crust. Dip in that oil and you're good to go. Make sure to grab some gelato on the way out.
