I wanted to share my experience so other patients know to carefully review treatment plans, procedure codes, and pricing before proceeding. I initially came to this office for an emergency visit when a crown came off and paid a significant amount out of pocket. When I later received my explanation of benefits, the crown was shown as not covered, which led to confusion. At a subsequent visit, I was told I needed an onlay. However, the treatment estimate I received listed crowns and core buildups instead. I questioned why a crown was being coded when my prior crown had not been covered and why the pricing was higher than typical onlay costs. I later contacted my insurance directly and was told that crowns are covered at 60%, which added to my confusion since this had not been clearly explained to me upfront, and the billing details I was given at the office did not feel consistent or transparent. During my appointment, I was then told I actually needed two onlays and a filling, which was different from what I had initially been told. When I asked to see the specific onlay procedure codes so I could review them myself, it took time to get a clear answer, and although codes were eventually provided, the total cost remained the same as the original crown-based estimate. Because the explanations and treatment details kept changing, I ultimately felt uncomfortable moving forward and decided to cancel my appointment before any treatment was performed. However, dealing with Priscilla is an absolute nightmare. She acts like she's trying to be helpful, but the billing practices here are completely shady. practice without telling you what they are doing. When I asked Priscilla for a standard dental billing code to check my coverage, she threw it back in my face and snapped, "We don't give dental codes out." When I asked why, she just said, "We just don't." To make matters worse, after Dr. Maddie told me I could get a discount, Priscilla nastily told me, "Well, she gave you a free cavity." The clinical team is top-tier, but Priscilla's toxic "Karen" attitude and deceptive billing transparency completely ruin this business. ## Option 2: Sharp & Warning (Great for Yelp) Five stars for Dr. Maddie, Santos, and the clinical team, but zero stars for Priscilla and the front desk billing tactics. Priscilla acts pleasant at first, but she is incredibly deceitful. practice without being upfront about what they are doing. When I directly asked for a dental procedure code to verify my insurance, Priscilla refused and said, "We don't give dental codes out... we just don't." I really tried to like this place but was always underwhelmed. The office is really dated but think they're currently renovating so you need to go to Torrance. I guess their computer systems aren't talking to each other and I was scheduled for an appt., received a text only to be told they didn't have my appointment scheduled. Other weird experiences here; I have a pretty sensitive mouth due to the oral surgeon they referred me to nicking a nerve during my wisdom teeth removal and can no longer feel half my tongue. It hurts to get my teeth cleaned on a specific side and 2-3 times I asked the hygienist to note this and they never did. So would have to explain every visit to please be careful. I also saw three different dentists over the course of 2 or 3 years. Lastly, one time I went in for a filling and the hygienist asked me which tooth it was. Didn't give me great confidence. Overall can't recommend this place. read more

I loved the dentist and it was one of the best that I've ever been to, but they have sold their offices to SALO and they are rebranding. They just sent out an email that pretty much said they will not be accepting PPO anymore. They will accept it but they're going to bill you first they expect you to pay upfront or use their credit services and then they're going to bill your PPO and the PPO reimbursed so it still has to come out of your pocket. I think that alienates a lot of people so please call ahead of time and ask for the billing practices before you walk in and you get sucked into opening a new credit card or a new credit service and dinging your credit report because the dentist wants to be paid upfront. The individuals that have a lot of money already, but those who work very hard and pay for PPO insurance are almost being punished by this practice and even though they may not see it that way, it's important for a consumer to understand what's going on. Amazing dental office and what I believe might be a predatory practice right now and it's unfair to individuals who just work really really hard and want to have the privilege. It's not even something that's given to everyone. It's a privilege to have healthy teeth without going bankrupt. It's very unfortunate that it is becoming harder and harder for people to get basic care which is vision and dental and every day without having to pull out a kidney and sell it on the black market to be able to afford basic human care. I hope they look into this practice and they accept PPO like they did before to allow individuals to utilize the insurance they worked hard for . They pay a lot of money for without having to extend their credit or pay out of pocket and hope that the insurance pays them back in a timely manner. It could be just a personal opinion, but individuals deserve the right to have fair and equitable access to dental services. They deserve good dentists and they deserve good care without having to put a second mortgage on their house to satisfy a business. On the same note, the business should be able to bill PPO accordingly and get paid on time and so they can run efficiently . The bottom line of this rant is if you are an individual that does not have thousands of dollars at your disposal right now this may not be the dentist you want to go to. If you're not willing, or you don't have good enough credit to run their CareCredit or Cherry or whatever they're offering do not go in there do not hurt your credit. It's embarrassing to go to a dentist and work hard and have a PPO insurance and have them turn you away and tell you that you have to pay out-of-pocket for your services and you know that they're not cheap and you have the right through your PPO that you paid for to get a cleaning and exam and all of those things without having to pull any money out of pocket. be aware. They are amazing dentists or they were when I was there. Don't let yourself get suckered into hurting more than you already are because inflation is going up and a lot of people are struggling. To the dentist I think you should open up conversations with PPO insurance and you should open up conversations that benefit your patient because if you don't have the every day patient coming in for cleanings, etc. you may not get the income that you're looking for and you might hurt financially in the end. I loved your offices and I love the care, but I don't believe you are catering to the community and that may be what you want. read more

I recently changed to a new insurance plan. I called Manhattan Beach Dental Center to confirm that they accept my new insurance and unfortunately, they do not. However, the "good news" was that they have a sister office that does accept my insurance, Select Dental in Torrance, CA. I have never had an issue with Manhattan Beach Dental so I accepted the referral suggestion and decided to go to Select Dental. The reason for my (2) star review is solely because of their referral to Select Dental which turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes I've made in my life. Renate Gangel was my dentist at Select Dental. Renate understands her role and what is expected of her, her job is NOT to provide patients with the care that they deserve but is rather to make as much money as humanly possible. Renate is good at her job, she is willing to lie to you, pressure you into paying money for a procedure that you don't need or perhaps don't want, and is willing to overcharge you and your insurance company whenever the opportunity arises. I filed a grievance case with my insurance provider when I was charged $935.00 for a crown. My insurance provider (Delta Dental) concluded that I was indeed OVERCHARGED and that Select Dental did not comply with their contractual protocols (the crown costs $195.00 through my insurance). My insurance made sure that I was issued a refund but the entire ordeal was time consuming, frustrating and to be honest, humiliating. I cannot understand why Manhattan Beach Dental Center would refer me to an establishment that would immediately try to take advantage of me. The fact that Select Dental is the "sister office" to Manhattan Beach Dental Center is very concerning. Knowing what I know now, I would recommend looking elsewhere if you are considering this dentist. Their affiliated with an office that willingly scams their patients. Not good. read more

I was very nervous and excited to get veneers, but when I met Dr. Madelyne Salo I felt so comfortable. After many consults with cosmetic dentists all over La, I knew I found the right one! Dr. Salo walked me through the whole process, and I was ready to jump in! She really listened to all of my concerns and desires- and executed incredibly. I was so so picky about everything but even in my temporaries I felt like a new person, everyone was complimenting me and they couldn't tell I had a mouth full of fake teeth! I had such an incredible experience here yesterday with Dental hygienist Dr. Aviva. She took care of my pain with fluoride and restin and fit me in on the same day during the same visit for another exam. I was even seen for the other exam during when the usual person conducting the exam has lunch which was so kind of them!! She explained all the aftercare procedures so clearly to me and was so kind the entire time. I just felt happy and well cared for and booked again for a day I know she'll be there. I feel like that the staff addressed my concerns and pain spots with the least invasive procedures first which I greatly appreciate! And a day later those sensitive spots are no longer sensitive!! They also inspired me to buy an electric toothbrush again which I used to use but then went back to manual. Very kind and amazing staff!! read more

I've been to plenty of dentists in the past and the quality of work and customer service has been poor but Manhattan beach dental center is the complete opposite and has exceeded my expectations tremendously. The front desk had the best customer service. I filled out my paper work, immediately went to X-rays then by the time I knew it I was getting a cleaning. No long waits. The hygienist was very thorough and her quality of work was felt. No pain and it felt like I had a whole new set of teeth. After I met Dr. Salo and she explained in detail what I needed to get done and why. I can tell she really cares about her patients. If you want to waste your money and your time, it is the place to go! My dentist, Dr. Kline, retired, and Dr. Salo and Atwood took over the practice, so I decided to give them a chance: big, big mistake! One of my front teeth broke, and they told me that both of the front teeth were cracked and I needed to get veneers on my 2 front teeth, which I did. Not only did it not match the color of my other teeth, but they were too big and bulging! Even my orthodontist noticed it right away! I complained a few times about it, and the solution was to give me a kit to whiten my teeth, making them look worse. Whenever I saw people, they asked what I had done with my front teeth. I finally decided to change dentists and went with Dr. Withers in Manhattan Beach. He saw the problem immediately, and with GKY Dental Arts in Torrance, he fixed the issues! No need to make it done in a fancy lab in New York like at Manhattan Beach Dental Center! Now I can finally smile without worrying about people noticing I have "fake teeth"! read more

I've never reviewed a health care provider before but I am so impressed with Dr. Maddie and her staff that I had to write this review. The first thing that I experienced that was different from other dental offices was the digital X-rays where they took pictures of every tooth. Then my teeth were cleaned by a dental hygienist who yelled at me for neglecting a couple of places but also gave me pointers on how to avoid repeating the problem. Then I was seen by Dr. Salo. She examined my mouth and showed me the X-rays and where my previous dental work was excellent and where I had a problem with a crown that was deteriorating. I would not recommend this place for people of color. It feels like you're going back in time. While they are nice, but in a patronizing type of way. I went for my first appointment and they had the audacity to take my x-rays and let me know I needed major work done WITHOUT showing me the x-rays. I've never been to any doctor who took x-rays and didn't show them to me. It's as if they didn't expect me to know what a proper dentist should do, meanwhile I have several friends in the profession and they were appalled by the notion that x-rays were taken and never shown & discussed. Horrible. They have multiple dentist that go between this office and other offices. There is not one dentist that will set up a dental plan for you that makes sense that you will see regularly. When you call they ask what service you need, rather than consulting your file and selecting an appointment inline with that. The hygienist come and go and try to do their best with the lack of oversight. If you need a deep cleaning they won't do it, but are happy to take X-rays, bill for X-rays, bill for a dental consult and do a cleaning, that they bill for before getting approval for a deep cleaning. This is under the guise of "dental insurance is cracking down," even if you have a PPO, and this never happened before with Dr. Klein. Why bill for a cleaning that isn't necessary right before getting a deep cleaning? It's really hard to make dental appointments during covid, so to have to come in multiple times is unsafe and not proper. So very disappointing. Switching Dentist after giving them a second shot. Not what our community needs and I called my insurance to see if the pre-approval was some new "cracking down." read more

THIS PLACE IS A SCAM!!!! I recently moved to the area and need a new dentist. I called to book a cleaning and when I arrived I had to take x-rays which is normal when you come in for a new dentist office as a new patient. After x-rays what happens at every other dentist office I have ever been to for the last I dunno 30 some years is they clean my teeth. Instead the dentist came in to check my teeth and said everything looked good and that we can book a cleaning. I told her that this was the appointment for the cleaning and she said no that it was two separate appointments which I have NEVER heard of before. Dental insurance only covers two annual appointments per year. The one I came in for to have my teeth cleaned AND checked would now be the two separate appointments. Well there goes my two annual cleanings. I was assured that I would not be charged for any of the appointments and that this would be considered one appointment. Well today I got a bill for 29 dollars which I have never received from my insurance AND now two of my appointments are gone. So this means that if I want to go to a dentist before the end of the year I will have to pay out of pocket. If I was told from the very beginning this is how this dental business operates I would have never come in. PLEASE fix what the dentist and the front office assured me would not happen but it did. I want to be able to go to a dentist before the end of the year and not have it be out of pocket because of your mistake!!! read more

There aren't many times when you can say that your dentist is a singing dentist. Dr. Klein sings in a barbershop quartet, if I'm not mistaken, and you can definitely hear it in his voice. He's a kind and gentle dentist, straight to the point, and eager to get your pearly whites looking and feeling the best they can be. I actually drive 18+ miles out of my way from home and work to see this dentist. I've been going to his practice for a little over a year now, through times with and without insurance, and haven't been displeased yet. They have flexible payment terms if your insurance doesn't cover certain items. I absolutely love that I'm not lectured about my teeth. I know I don't floss, at least I told you about it. He treats adults like, well, adults. I usually visit him about four times a year for my check-ups and cleanings due to personal details that I'd rather not get into, and have always found it quite refreshing that the staff knows me not just by name, but also remembers details about my personal life that I've told them. They asked about the cruise my mother and I went on, they ask about work, we joke about things. It's very personable and a welcome change from the austere black-and-white world of HMO type facilities. I always have fun with my dental visits. The hygenists are great sources of advice for keeping your teeth cleaned. I knew that I was brushing wrong because well, who does pay attention to that? But, I didn't know just how wrong it was until I was put on the spot and told to brush for my hygenist. Wow, eye opening experience. She helped correct my brush placement, and it did drastically improve my teeth for the next visit. The prescribed rinse and brush technique clinique improved my teeth and gums in just three months. Appointments are flexible. The office is very organized, clean and neat. The staff is always happy and upbeat. And your main Dentist sings. How can you possibly beat that? Parking is in the rear. I found it best to turn off of Sepulveda and take Oak to their parking lot. Much less crowded and easier to maneuver than Sepulveda. read more

Part of an onlay I had put in from a previous dentist had broken off and Dr. Madelyne Salo got me in first thing, removed the other part and prepped me for a new zirconia crown to come in a couple weeks. She put a temporary crown on with dental assistant, Yurani, who was super nice and helpful. Dr. M Salo was professional and gentle. She talked me through the whole procedure and explained what she was doing and why. They had a very cool 3D machine that made my temporary crown fit perfectly. I have been to numerous dentists over the past 40 years so I have considerable direct experience. The dental care I have received at Manhattan Beach Dental Care has been outstanding. The specific dentist that provided my dental services was Dr. Madelyne Salo. She removed an old, weakened crown and replaced it but did the procedure with very high expertise and professionalism. When she took the impression of the crown and sent out to a milling company (org that manufactures the crowns) the product fit OK to me but Dr Salo wasn't satisfied with the fit--so she sent it back with clear instruction on the necessary modifications. The first crown felt fine to me but on viewing it with their high resolution X-rays, there was a small gap that was too wide for Dr Salo--she wasn't satisfied, saying that the manufactured crown would likely collect excessive food particles etc over time--ultimately leading to future issues. Sending the crown back to the milling company to redo essentially meant a lot more work for Dr Salo and her assistants, for no additional compensation. Dr. Salo's level of professionalism and diligence is very refreshing. Her hygienists and dental assistants are also very good, considerably better than other dental practices I have experienced. Net net, I am extremely happy with the dental care from her practice, already had my wife switch dentists to Dr Salo. read more
