We were initially sold on the sales pitch Dr. Maryam made that her gradual approach would help decrease the amount of time each girl needed braces down the line, might even eliminate the need for braces completely, and would also help with the girls' narrowed airways (she focused on this a looooot with X-rays) and TMJ syndrome (she again focused on this a looooot with X-rays). This is all well and good if you have unlimited time and money to spend 3-4 years and $7000 per child for the 2-phase treatment she advocates. We decided to go with the 2-phase plan, in the hopes that phase 1 would take care of most of the teeth correction. We wasted about a year and a half on Phase 1 for both our girls, with complicated retainers that spread the hard palate bones for about a year, then another few months of facial muscle trainers that were way too big for their mouths. They were so uncomfortable and pushed into their tongues so much that they couldn't sleep with the gadgets in their mouths. Both our girls have overbites, one of them much more prominent than the other. One girl also has teeth crowding. Dr. Maryam placed both girls on a 2-part treatment plan that first involved the retainers she invented then the facial muscle trainers. This took about a year and a half and $3500 for each girl. At the end of it, she wanted to start the braces on one of the girls who did not have enough correction with the 1st phase. So, it would be another year or two of braces and another $3500. Trust me. Just go the conventional route with a conventional orthodontist. Don't waste an extra 2 years and lots of extra $$$ out of pocket for these unconventional, unnecessary, ineffective, really uncomfortable gadgets that she is experimenting with on kids. On our girls, they were tedious and didn't work in the long run. They are also super uncomfortable and kept cutting into the girls' tongues and gums. We kept having to go back to the clinic to get the retainers adjusted so they wouldn't cut into their gums. They ended up being more uncomfortable than braces. Our kids HATED them. The whole reason we were willing to go along with the 2-phase plan was that we were trying as much as possible to avoid needing braces (phase 2) and all the pain and dietary restrictions that go along with them. Dr. Maryam gave us this false hope that phase 1 might succeed enough that the girls might not even need phase 2 (braces). She also downplayed how cumbersome and painful her inventions for Phase 1 would be. Well, she was wrong. Phase 1 turned out being even more inconvenient and painful than braces, and the girls still needed braces anyway at the end. We went along with her gamble, and we lost. Don't gamble with your time, money, and kids' discomfort. The funny thing is that Dr. Maryam said our kids shouldn't do Invisalign, because the Invisalign retainers are so easily lost or misplaced by kids. Well, so were the gadgets that she invented and pushed so hard for us to try. The retainers are sooooo easy to lose, and we had to pay for replacements a few times...expensive. Not worth it. Just get braces for your kid, and be done with it. I really wish we had just gone to a conventional orthodontist and done the braces 2 years ago, rather than this long drawn-out unconventional path that takes twice as much time and costs twice as much money. Apparently dental insurance only covers $3500 only once over the child's entire lifetime, so we have to pay the next $3500 for each girl out of pocket. We're now looking for a conventional orthodontist to get braces for our girls. We don't feel comfortable any more continuing with Dr. Maryam, just because Phase 1 was so expensive, painful, and ineffective. Our girls' teeth look exactly like they did 2 years ago--huge overbites. read more

Leaving this review to help others with TMJ to not have to go through the same unnecessary, extensive treatment that I went through. While Dr. Maryam is such a nice person, I don't recommend going to her for TMJ for a couple specific reasons: 1. Although her practice has "Orthodontics" in the title, she isn't an actual orthodontist. I wish I would've known this before my treatment because I would have never done it here knowing this is the case. After having braces as a kid, the last thing I wanted was to have braces again (& she doesn't offer Invisalign to fix TMJ). And I only want an orthodontist moving my teeth around, not a dentist. Her treatment caused me to develop an open bite that I'm now getting fixed with Invisalign (which is also fixing my TMJ). 2. My treatment plan was verbally explained to me in a very deceiving way. After paying a few thousand dollars for my treatment (which I thought covered ALL treatment costs) and 9 months of wearing a thick mouthpiece, I found out this way only for phase 1 and phase 2 would cost me over DOUBLE what I'd paid for so far. Not to mention the financial lady who works there was very rude when I was shocked at this additional cost. If you have TMJ and are considering going here, I highly recommend getting a consultation (or multiple) with real orthodontists first. I really wish I had done this to save myself money and months of wearing uncomfortable mouthpieces. read more

Dr. Maryam's combination of being EXTREMELY intelligent and EXTREMELY caring is exactly what you pray for when finding a new doctor. She treats me like her own son, and it truly means the world to me. She is anything but your average orthodontist, that's for sure! She's so intelligent that you'd think she'd gone to numerous medical schools for numerous disciplines - I tell my PTs about her and they're BLOWN AWAY with her level of knowledge. Not only is she an expert in all things TMJ, she really takes a holistic approach to healing her patients - explaining how the jaw is a structural and neurological "hot spot" that is crucial to keep (or put) in the correct spot. If you're unaware of the significance of the TMJ, even as it relates to other parts of the body, reach out to Dr. Maryam or do some google searches, you'd be very surprised as to how important it is. I also have another back issue that is unrelated to the jaw and she called her husband, who works in the medical field, to come check me out. I couldn't believe it. It still brings tears to my eyes that she's willing to go so far above and beyond the standard. UNBELIEVABLE! I cannot say enough GREAT things about Dr. Maryam, and I've seen well over 75 specialists over the past 10 years as I try to figure out my chronic pain nightmare - I have never met anybody even remotely like her. After a thorough evaluation and consultation, I was fitted for a night guard to protect my teeth from intense clenching/grinding and to alleviate my constant jaw pain. Fantastic doctors like Dr. Maryam can help. -- TMJ had taken over my life in such a way that I accepted that I'd never be able to drive again, cuddle with my wife, hold my children, or work again. After a long medical battle and almost 100k in out of pocket expenses, thoughts of defeat started to infiltrate my normally optimistic disposition. If you're reading this (while hating your jaw/neck/shoulder/back because looking down at your phone is one of many things that hurts like a MF), don't give up. If you feel like TMJ has taken over your life, you are not alone. I had dropped out of my MBA program, had no solid food for six months, went on disability for 2.5 years, saw other TMJ specialists, practiced self-care, got massages twice a week, chiropractic work, acupuncture, removed as many stressors (see: stressful family members) from my life as possible. All of these reduced my pain by maybe 25%. Basically I could kind of turn my head, but not for long. If a dollar could buy pain reduction, Dr. Maryam and her team provided the best value of anything I tried. Her custom splint, subsequent adjustments, braces to move my bite, and post treatment retainers easily reduced my pain by 50%. I know adult braces aren't super sexy, but they helped reawaken the nerves in my gums (connected to many jaw muscles) which had become completely atrophied. Please give her a call if you're looking for someone who does not price gauge, really listens to you, and is excited to be on your journey to better health. I've had TMJ for several years and had reached a point where I heard a loud **pop** and suddenly could barely open my mouth without having a lot of pain. I actually found Dr. Maryam's office after reading a negative review on another "TMJ Specialist"'s Yelp page warning not to go there. The reviewer sounded really knowledgeable about why the other specialist wasn't to be trusted so I reached out and asked her if she had found anyone trustworthy and she told me about Dr. Maryam! Right away Dr. M x-rayed me and was able to explain why I was feeling the way I did. I was in total shock that I finally felt I was being understood after being told by Dentist after Dentist that a night guard would solve my problems. The treatment process was not cheap, short, or easy. I'm not going to lie. But after 6 months of various stages and multiple visits I no longer have pain and can now eat like a more normal person. The staff at Dr. Maryam's office were all super kind and helpful. I got to know several of them over the time I spent and I truly felt they cared about helping me and not just a dollar sign on my forehead. She doesn't have a magic wand and there's no such thing as a miracle cure. Dr. Maryam is such a kind and genuine person who gave me hope after years of TMJ pain that I was feeling would be forever. I'm so grateful to have found Dr. Maryam as my orthodontist. I got a referral from my friend's friend and I decided to have my braces here. It's one of my best decisions I've done in my life. My teeth were overbite, very crowded and been getting headaches since I was little. And I was not confident to laugh or smile all my life because I didn't want anyone to see my crowded and unaligned teeth. But coming to Dr. Maryam changed everything. She and all her staffs are very friendly, nice and always make me feel welcome at the office. I didn't even have to remove any tooth even though my teeth were super crowded. I just needed to wear expanders for a year and less than 2 years of braces and I was done with zero pain the whole process. It took me years to gather the courage to finally write this review because I like Dr. Maryam very much as a person and can truly attest that she is one of the sweetest and kindest people. But I also think it is important to share my experience so others don't make the same mistake I made. Dr. Maryam may be wonderful for TMJ issues or basic orthodontics, but that is not what I went to her for so I'm only sharing my own experience (and the experience of a few other close contacts who underwent treatment with her for similar issues). I was very, very disappointed with my treatment and still am to this day. If you are a jaw surgery candidate, which was the case for me and the others I know, then I strongly, strongly recommend doing the surgery and saving yourself the years of time, money and effort involved in taking Dr. Maryam's "alternative European" approach. Dr. Maryam told me that her approach will get me the results I wanted so I no longer have to do the jaw surgery. My goal was to correct my under bite/cross bite so my front teeth are no longer edge-to-edge and no longer chip each other away, but unfortunately the problem still continues post treatment. I had braces for about 2.5-3 years with her (as an adult and for the second time in my life, when the treatment was supposed to be much shorter). The day she took them off, I literally cried for days because my teeth and bite had not significantly improved and I felt cheated. In fact, I liked my teeth better before I had these adult braces. I felt like this was a huge waste of $10,000 and years of my life. When I asked to see my "before" pictures multiple times so I can compare them to the results, I was told that they changed their system and could not access them. This really upset me because I'm pretty sure she didn't want me to see that my "before" pictures of my bite don't look much different than the "after". But worst of all, I developed tinnitus midway through my treatment. To this day, I am suffering from it and cannot enjoy silence because I'm constantly hearing swishing in my ear. I've seen multiple ENT doctors about it and the conclusion was that the orthodontic treatment and movement of my jaw must have triggered it. Dr. Maryam offered to inject saline into my jugular vein and said it "might" help, but I didn't want to go through more treatment and pain, and waste any more time there, which brings me to my last point. I live far from her practice and one of the main reasons I agreed to start treatment with her was because she was open on Saturdays. Midway through my treatment, she stopped working on Saturdays which forced me to take hours out of my work day mid-week regularly for my appointments. All in all, I'm very disappointed and unhappy, and wish I had gone the other route. Almost ten years later, this experience still weighs heavily on me. Again, this wasn't an easy review for me to share because Dr. Maryam was always kind, sweet and attentive and I didn't want to say anything negative about her, but if you need jaw surgery (to correct an under bite, over bite, or cross bite), I strongly advise you go that route. I'm so grateful to have found Dr. Maryam. She is an exceptional doctor. I have received the best possible treatment and owe my life to her. I want to express my sincere appreciation. I am a 19 year old full time student and a part time model. I've had constant temporal headaches as well as neck pain. My two upper central teeth were crooked. She fixed my bite and put braces on the upper arch only, because she was completely honest and told me I don't need braces on the lower. She's one of the few orthodontists that never extracted any teeth for a treatment which is AMAZING. In November of 2013, I ended at the ER two days in a row (everything started after a sneeze!) for the second time that year due to what I considered - and was treated for - a severe migraine attack. Shortly after this, I was referred to Dr.Maryam by my primary doctor. He asked me in my annual physical appointment if I have checked my TMJ as that can be the cause of my headache. To be honest with you, I chuckled at the thought of my jaw being the reason for the excruciating pain I have had experienced in the past, but since I was ready to try anything to never go through that again, I scheduled a consultation with Dr. Maryam and I am absolutely happy I did! In the first visit and after taking a 3D X-Ray and examining my face, it was clear that my TMJ could be the cause of my "migraine" attacks. I was provided by a retainer that I was asked to wear during the day and a nightguard. I am not gonna lie! They were not easy to wear. Especially, because they were forcing me to bite down differently and the first few weeks, I was simply uncomfortable. Very soon though, the regular tensions headaches I used to get at least 2-3 times a week were gone...and I have not experienced any migraine-like attacks since December '13. TMJ miracle doctor! My primary doctor referred me to dr Maryan Bakhtiyari in Manhattan Beach because I was desperate. My TMJ was getting worse by the week and my existing mouthguard seemed to be exacerbating the situation. I had horrible neck pain and kept noticing myself holding my neck and back in awkward positions, my jaw was locking and I was noticing odd symptoms like feeling as if my tongue was too big for my mouth/ I couldn't sleep, my mouth opened oddly pulled to the side the TMJ was most affecting, the list went on... The first time I met Dr Maryan I had hope she could fix this. While completing the pre-visit survey of symptoms I was so happy to see "does your tongue feel too big for your mouth"... YES!! my odd symptom wasn't in my head it was actually a TMJ symptom. First off she is lovely. So kind and understanding. She took a full x-ray that scanned in a circle around my skull. The results were so interesting. My jaw was shoved back and causing impingement on my corroded artery and therefore the blood to my brain. (no comments lol). She immediately made me a new mouth splint (similar to guard). I have been wearing it for probably 6 months and my TMJ is gone. Along with my neck pain. If you have any of these types of mysterious sleep, head/neck, snoring, breathing issues, teeth grinding, malalignment of your jaw etc.. you need to talk to Dr Maryam. I am overdue in writing this review, I was reminded AGAIN this week of how Dr Maryam has significantly helped our family. I found her when I came down with SEVERE TJM last year. I was in such tremendous pain, I couldn't eat, couldn't smile and would lay in bed at night and cry in pain. As soon as I met her she assured me that "she had seen this many times before" and she could help me. She gave me a mouthpiece (that I still wear at night and has become my most valuable possession!) and completely changed my life. I have ZERO pain and because my jaw was out of alignment, I was having all sorts of other issues I wasn't even aware of - for example, I'm much stronger, who knew that had to do with jaw alignment). She has changed my life and I'm forever grateful to her. She is a great teacher and since I now had a basic understanding of jaw alignment, I noticed my son's jaw was off. I brought him in and she put braces on him and explained that because his jaw alignment was off, he wasn't getting enough oxygen to his brain. We thought my son had ADD and some sort of fidgeting disorder (seriously, he couldn't stop moving) -- but she explained that the constant movement was his body's way of trying to get more oxygen. Fast forward a year (we had slowly forgotten about the fidgeting and his grades had improved to all As because he will do his homework for hours) --- my husband saw him with a group of friends and observed that they were all fidgety but our son can stand calmly now. He had completely stopped fidgeting and we didn't even notice because it was gradual. He was the one who reminded us "Dr Maryam said I'd stop fidgeting, remember?" We had totally forgotten and taken for granted this HUGE change in his overall persona. I spoke to my dentist about it earlier in the week and she agreed it was 100% what Dr Maryam did. She also gave our 8 year old an expander. She went from a crowded mouth (and a chronic cold - I'll explain that in a minute) to a beautifully open and uncrowded mouth. Our little one was always sick, Dr Maryam asked if she was alway sick and said the expander would make a huge difference, something about she use to do all her breathing through her mouth... it had to do with the expander, but I can't remember exactly how. But she was the only one in our house who didn't get sick this winter! Sorry for the long review, I just can't say enough great things about Dr Maryam (and her staff). I haven't mentioned yet that she is the nicest and warmest person I know. Her office is so welcoming, we always look forward to going in there. Dr. Maryam is the orthodontist for my 3 children. One of my daughter's teeth were moving forward and the top of her palate was narrowing due to her sucking her thumb. Dr. Maryam, who is unbelievably sweet with my children and so nurturing, put in a palate expander which immediately stopped the thumb sucking and within weeks her palate started to widen and look normal and beautiful without ever having to extract any of her teeth. Dr. Maryam used a palate expander on my other daughter too and made room for all of her teeth never having to extract any of her teeth as well. My children are very comfortable in her office. Her staff is very friendly and professional and my children never have any hesitation going there for adjustments. I have had TMJ cracking, popping and jaw pain ever since I was a little girl. Over the past 7 years my jaw had been getting worse and I was having a harder time opening it and my headaches were getting bad. Dr Maryam is very skilled at what she does. I suffered from neck pain, all day, everyday. My dentist referred me out to Dr Maryam because of her specialty in TMJ and braces. She is a true master at this craft. I had braces when I was younger and they destroyed my alignment and was just getting worse with age. I'm 40 now. I wasn't ready to have another round of orthodontia but I was open to it. I'm am now pain free and have a beautiful smile. My alignment is now where it should be!
