My son and I have developed a thing for diner food recently. The more retro and nostalgic, the better. This place is clean, pleasantly worn and dated. There is a ton of local railroad memorabilia. Honestly it is so perfectly old, it felt like a movie set because places that have frozen in this era of dining are going extinct rapidly. The service is very friendly. The food was excellent. It's not "fancy". I loved the parsley sprigs and orange slices for garnish. If you want something new and edgy, go elsewhere. If you want simple comfort food, this is your stop. I had the hot beef sandwich. The mashed potatoes are home made and very rich and creamy with little chunks of potato throughout. The bread was better than average white bread. The roast beef was house made, not deli meat. It was very savory and tender, but had a pleasant chew to it. The gravy was silky and savory. My son had the club sandwich, again, very fresh ingredients, meat, cheese and veggies piled high. He got a generous pile of fries with it which were crispy on the outside and tender. My husband had the liver and onions. It came with a nice sized slice of fried liver, beautiful grilled onions, two strips of crisp bacon and more of those lovely mashed potatoes. His salad was crisp iceberg with grape tomatoes, a very usual diner salad. But the blue cheese dressing was homemade and very good. We did not have dessert, but I have something to come back for as Shoshone is a sweet little town with tons of beautiful historic buildings.

This was a terrific dinner! We had breakfast burgers French Dip and the special. ALL were great! Big portions and everything tasted really good too. The Chocolate Malt was the best I've had in a long time. The fries were perfect! Crispy outside tender inside. The pickle chips on the side were great! The blue cheese dressing, which is house made, was out of this world. And to finish off the meal house made pies! Coconut Cream and Chocolate Mint..WOW! So good! And the coffee was wonderful to go with the breakfast and pies! Would absolutely recommend this place and want to go back again!

How classics! I love the picture amplifying the rich history of this quaint railroad town. The food is well portioned AND they have pie! A must see and taste while traveling through this sweet little town.

The Manhattan Cafe is like the kind of place my grandfathers used to take me to fifty years ago. Filling comfort food in a down home atmosphere that probably hasn't changed since the 1960s. This is truly a step back in time to a "white bread" era. If you don't enjoy well cooked meat with potatoes this isn't the place for you. I don't typically seek out this type of cuisine on a regular basis, but, on a road trip, I find it to be quite satisfying. As for the food, I'd give it a three star rating; it could have tasted more fresh. But the coffee was good and the blue cheese on the garden salad wasn't bad at all. I suppose I'd eat her again, but might try some of the other local places first as I don't go through Shoshone more than three or four times each year.

Wonderful food and service! Sort of out of the way but well worth it. We will always stop if going thru Shoshone, Idaho!

The food was mediocre at best. $38 for two burgers, tots, and Pepsi. Only one server for the entire restaurant.

The booking agent at Picabo insured me that my guide, Zack Mayhew, would pick me up in front of my hotel, Red River Inn, in Stanley, and that he would call me the day before my trip. Zack called me at 8:30 pm the night of the 15th, and basically told me that the river was "blown out", and not enough water to fish it from a drift boat. This was a complete fabrication, as driftboats on the 16th were going down the Salmon River from my vantage point. So, if I wanted to fish on that Monday, I could get in my truck and turn around and drive back down through the valley an hour-and-and-half to rendezvous with him. This is not what I signed up for. I never received any phone calls from the management at Picabo apologizing to me. I'm under the impression they don't even guide on the Salmon River. It is too far north for them. So I was left, after driving from Bend, Oregon, to Stanley, Idaho, with no guide. I called the fly shop myself the following day and got a young man on the phone who tried to make it sound like it was my fault and I misunderstood. Really? He told me he would tell his management staff about me being stranded in Stanley, but I never heard a word back. How sad they couldn't even take the time to reach out to me. I would never use them. -Mike M
