It's not easy finding a good dentist and I've been going to my childhood dentist for about 20 years. The reason I am changing is because I want a one stop shop and he usually has to send me other places tog etc certain things done. Manhattan Dental has been amazing thus far. My hygienist Natasha is very sweet and patient with all my questions and movements. Haha. The dentist, Allison Gordon, was amazing. I appreciate how much they check on you throughout your whole appointment. In one day I had two procedures done and it took about two hours. I was shocked when she inserted the numbing needing and I didn't feel too much pain. The assistants are friendly and accommodating. The front desk staff, well they are all super sweet and professional. The waiting area is always clean and I love the massage chair. Haha. Very good touch if you are waiting. Work done on my mouth that was not covered by insurance that I was Not told was not covered ! I really feel like I am been taken over by more work done to benefit the practices pockets. I've been into this office several times to have a Crown fixed - first they canceled and left me with a temp for two months and would not return calls to schedule the permanent one - then I chipped another tooth and needed another crown and again - can't get the return visit for the repair scheduled cuz no one returns a phone call, they didn't send my X-rays to my insurance so it was denied and now I have to start over. I'm need to the city and absolutely hate that this is the only office that accepted new patients with my insurance. Horrible service. read more

Mainly scheduled here to see Dr. Charnas--and my appointment confirmed so. As a new patient, it would have been nice to have been informed that I would in fact not be seeing him. The cleaning was fine but seemed rushed. Due to some tooth pain I was certain I had at least one cavity. It wasn't until halfway through my cleaning that I was informed Dr. Charnas wasn't in and some random dentist (not even on their website, Dr. Kotkin) would look over my cleaning and check for cavities. While checking over my teeth, Dr. Kotkin randomly asks me: "When did you get your lips done?" Taken back I responded: "I don't have my lips done". It was inappropriate of him to ask. Now, most importantly, the hygienist and Dr. Kotkin confirmed I didn't have any cavities and the pain could be from sensitivities. Okay...pain persisted a month later and decided to go elsewhere for 2nd opinion. I had to take a whole new set of X-rays again and the new dentist goes: "you see this black spot, this is a cavity, I'm not sure how they could've missed this"... So...maybe Dr. Charnas is a great dentist, I don't know because I was not only screwed over on my first appointment but wasn't properly evaluated or professionally diagnosed/treated by the dentist they put me with. read more

I am a terrible dental patient. I'm terrified. And when I do get up the courage to go, I often feel shamed. That was not the case here. I felt welcomed. I needed to have a lot of work done (my previous dentist retired I don't go often enough) and everyone involved treated my like a partner, not a naughty child. Realizing that everyone is different, and people have good days and bad days, I have to say that my experience with the front desk was a delight. I was offered a calming cup of tea. The person scheduling my next appointment was considerate and funny. The office is bright and sunny. I will probably never want to go to the dentist. It is not my idea of a good time. Great experience on my first visit! However, my second appointment was cancelled without my consent so I didn't even get seated! I had even confirmed it earlier in the week over the phone. Upon arrival, there were no apologies or empathy from any of the staff. They did however ask if I would like to reschedule, which I declined. I looked up dentists within my network and they accepted my insurance but must have stopped accepting it. I checked with their staff upon arrival and they said I needed to see Dr. Vargas because Dr. Charnas wasn't covered but Vargas was. That was fine and I appreciated them telling me. THEN received a bill in the mail with a letter informing me the visit wasn't covered. They gave me a 50% courtesy discount but I'm just upset they gave me incorrect information at the time of my visit and charged me. I should have checked with my insurance company again but I also should have been able to trust the front desk. read more

FINALLY a fantastic dentist office found in NYC! Beginning from the front desk, the staff are super polite, professional and courteous and the office itself appears to be clean and decked out with the latest equipment. Not only did my hygienist do an excellent job, she was very friendly and took the time to review all of my dental concerns and find solutions to certain issues that have been going on for over two years that no other dentists seem to have nailed. You have lost a 7 year customer who has sent countless referrals due to the rude and inconsiderate staff that work in your billing department. I've been disputing my bill for almost a year and miraculously you realized you had to make a PPO adjustment to make it right. No apology from the staff, just a rude email telling me yet again it was my fault. You are scamming customers, you are overcharging to see if customers notice, you are submitting things twice to insurance when the procedure only took place once. It's such a shame because I really liked my hygienist but it seems that you treat your patients as a commodity and don't really care about whether or not we are treated with respect. I also liked that they weren't trying to upsell me with and small sign of work that MAY need to be done. They were courteous and told me "this will not be covered", "this will be covered." After some unfortunate dental insurance confusion, I have returned to MDS and my new hygienist Natasha is THEE BEST! I went in after not seeing anyone for a year (due to insurance issues), took some x-rays and Natasha told me that I need to a deep cleaning aka creepy medical term, Scaling & Root Planning. She showed me on the X-rays what to look for and I did see the build up and these flake looking type of formations between my teeth and gums. I was anything but thrilled as I assumed that I would need shots and I suffer from Belonephobia, so that was going to be a deal breaker. Thankfully MDS knows how to accommodate folks like myself! They gave me a Valium before my appt to help calm my nerves and before the procedure she applied a heavy duty numbing substance to my gums - so no needles needed. That combination did the trick! There were moments of discomfort but no all out pain by any means. If any area started to get sensitive, we did my whole mouth in one session so it took almost 2 hours to complete, she would just reapply that numbing stuff, work on another area and then go back to finish. All in all I am very happy that I did the procedure and very happy with the results and how great my teeth feel! One last thing, I just want to publicly thank Natasha for being such an awesome and patient hygienist. During my first visit back, once I learned I needed to get the S&RP, I had some serious anxiety, even some tears and she calmly talked me down and reassured me that she would do my procedure, she has had years of practice doing it and that she would make me comfortable. The day of, about 2 weeks later, she did exactly what she said she would do. She checked on me periodically during the procedure to make sure I was doing ok and even let me wear my headphones as a distraction to all the scraping she had to do. He managed to stabilize my mouth after years of going to a negligent dentist, and I really appreciate his talent. Manhattan Dental Spa is also very helpful in aiding you in securing financing. I have been coming here for at least 8 years and have always had a positive experience. They are knowledgeable and have given me good advice over the years. The only thing that I would say is that sometimes they do try to "sell" new products that you probably don't 100% need so just be aware of that. The prices are also higher than you would get from a suburban office. I really love that you get to watch tv while you get your teeth cleaned which is great and there are also great views from certain chairs out onto Manhattan. Not only is she great at what she does, but is so pleasant to be around. Recently, I had some dental work done and was a bit nervous. Dr. Charnas was so terrific. He took a lot of time and was very understanding and kind towards me. Dr. Vargas, is also great and has a wonderful bedside manner as well. You don't always get a good doc combined with a caring one. Here, you do. Also, I must say that the front desk staff, starting with Diny, are so professional and create a nice atmosphere as a first impression. Terrible service, and I never even made it to the office. I called to schedule an appointment and said I had a Gilt voucher, I was told they had one open date available. No open dates before or after that date. Since I was going to be out of town on that date, I told them that was a problem. I asked why they continued to sell vouchers when they had no availability, I was told that it wasn't their fault because they know they cannot honor the vouchers, but that Gilt, Lifebooker, etc kept selling them anyway. Which really made no sense. However, I'm happy I learned about the terrible service from the call and not during the appointment. I had a terrible experience here. I had an appointment last week on that rainy day. I showed up on time and was told the doctor is late & we called you. THEY HAD NOT CALLED ME. I went back at the doctor's convenience, checked in, waited, changed rooms TWICE & some awful woman came in & asked me "Now who are you? Nobody told me who you are. Are you Lisa or Lisa's sister?" She was rude. At this point, I was wet, tired & fed up. I also had a broken foot, which not one of them was the least bit concerned about! The doctor was fine, but this place needs to regroup & try to be more helpful. They are not the patients, do not have an understanding of customer service. I was a patient at Manhattan Dental spa for several years. Though they are severely overpriced, i found that hygenist was conveniently located. However, recently the unprofessionalism has increased a lot. The person i worked with denied me a special service just because it was supposedly only open to patients who have done full xrays (which i did not need but bring in about 2000K to the office) -- in my case, this was not true, actually, and was a clear case of trying to rip off more money from me and my insurance. Now, they seem to go with overbooking as well, my appointment was more than 40 min late when the office knew it was scheduled specifically in advance and that i am very time-sensitive.
