I have been a customer for at least 10 years, ever since I began wearing glasses. From my first order to my most recent order, only a few weeks ago, I have always received excellent service. I even stop by once in a while to get my frame tightened and they are always helpful and don't let me leave until it is just right. Not only do I trust the frames I wear on my face every day to them, but I also trust Marina to help me pick new ones out. She knows what looks good and what does not for my face. It is not about trying to sell me something. Sometimes I just get my old frames updated with the new prescription, and when we find frames that look fab then I buy a new pair. Went in because it's a neighborhood store and I really like supporting the places around me. Having said that, this place is VERY small and only really sells prescription glasses, I was looking for sun glasses which they do have a few of. I tried on a few and finally found one that I liked. There weren't a lot of options so I felt like I was settling, but it was okay, they work and they were a good deal, so... I really love the people here. They're super friendly and made the process of finding glasses really easy. I may not return for sunglasses, but I would definitely get my prescription glasses here! read more

Although Ashley was very friendly, I was disappointed in the care I received from Dr. Salzan. Not only was the exam very cursory, as another reviewer previously pointed out, but Dr. Salzan couldn't be bothered. He never introduced himself to me and even seemed slightly annoyed when I asked his name. He was never rude, but I would prefer in the future to see a doctor who at least pretends to care. I was also underwhelmed with the facility; it was quite small and unwelcoming, and the selection of affordable eyewear could be better. I would not recommend this location. read more

Had such a great experience here today! I have a very [very] old pair of Ray Bans. One of the temples always comes loose, and this time it came completely off. I brought my beloveds into Manhattan Eyeworks on my lunch break, and $3 and 5 minutes later, they were as good as new (and shined, to boot). I decided to try them out based on their proximity to my apartment and the fact they accept Davis Vision *(my insurance plan). My appointmend was at 5, and I arrived late about 15 minutes past being that I was held up at my office. The two young ladies at the front were helpful and cordial the entire time. They answered my questions and were the only saving grace of my visit (pre and post exam). However, the person with which one should feel the MOST comfortable with and welcomed should be the doctor, in this case: Andrew Salzan, O.D. His first words out of his mouth were (after I finished filling out paperwork) , "You were late, werent you!?" There was no cordial hello, or opportunity to explain why I was late. Now granted, he was right, I was late. However, I've had sufficient experiences with doctors across all medical fields, and not one (that wants to keep me as a patient) has ever NOT introduced themselves first much less made a comment like that as their first interaction with a prospective new client. It's part of having a practice, I'm sure he has experienced a late patient before in his "20 years" of practicing. I simply confirmed yes I was late, and gave him an opportunity to change the tone of the meeting, to which he did not. Since I was late, he informed me I would have to wait for the next patient (whom I saw had just arrived and was starting to fill out paperwork.) This made me wonder, being that it had only been 15 minutes since I arrived. It seemed this patient was early, however I soon figured out they had scheduled another appointment half an hr after mine. (5:30) I calmly confirmed that would be fine, all the while taking into account whether I would ever come back here or not. I have dealt with people like this, and decided to take a different approach. I would not be moved to be upset, I was there to get an eye exam and get contacts and leave. I had thought about consulting them for Lasik as well, that quickly left my mind. Once I was called in, the doctor came out and asked his assistants who was next. I was told (not asked) by Dr Salzan to go take my contacts out. His exact words were, (without making eye contact) "Do you have contacts in? Go remove them. There's some solution in the sink. On the left grab an empty contact case to use. Go sit in the chair afterwards." Its obvious Mr. Salzan had issues that day, however it should never be projected onto a patient. Although I softened him up, since I believe in treating people the way one would like to be treated, (respect and kindness) this is not an excuse for someone in his business. As he started wrapping up the exam and consultation, I had to remind him of an important eye test he did not perform to which he answered "oh yeah, I forgot. Sorry, I got into a little rush there." Now, could he have forgotten a simple test which is standard for the hundreds if not thousands of exams he's given, or was his forgetfulness on purpose? I dont know, however I found it strange to say the least. If you have to question your doctor's credibility, that is when I take the time to write a review such as this one. All the aforementioned having to do with his social skills and attitude is forgivable. (Meaning all one has to do is not become their patient.) However when someone comes to you because of your professional abilities and responsibilities as a doctor, and you flat out fail them, this is not forgivable and should be made known. The staff were very nice and took the time to explain the benefits of my plan, however I would not go back to discuss any type of Lasik, which I will be getting this fall. Sadly, they do not realize they lost a good customer. read more

Truly exceptional service and such incredibly nice folks! Doctors spent plenty of time with me in the eye exam and was thorough, yet friendly and informative. In choosing eyeglasses, the staff was very patient in helping me choose (I'm very indecisive). The doctor even came out to offer his opinion. UPDATE: I have continued to get all my glasses and exams at the 9th avenue store and it's still excellent. One of the doctors saved my life by identifying a rare, life-threatening condition in my left eye. Only for her thoroughness I got to a surgeon in time to be treated. You don't hear this everyday and I don't want to be dramatic, but this is the type of care that separates Manhattan Eyeworks from other places. And I should point out how helpful and fun Ashley and Yoli are. If you need help selecting some frames, ask these two. The best! read more

I've purchased my last three pairs of glasses here and have had a great experience each time. Marina (owner?) is very helpful when it comes to picking out the right frames and lens options. They have a nice selection at reasonable prices and accept VSP insurance. Turnaround has been quick each time. Though they offer eye exams, I've never had one there. read more

I just wanted to say that service here is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! New customer. Came here because they accept my insurance. I had my eye exam, bought glasses and contacts all in one swoop. Contacts arrived within 2 days. Glasses a week later. Over the next several weeks, I had to go back at least 4 times to get my glasses adjusted - they were just too tight with the arms digging into the side of my face Marina was helpful each time I went in. When it seemed that there was no other way around it - those frames just weren't made for my face - she gave me the option to pick out new frames. No hassles. No guilt. No complaints! Made an appointment on zocdoc because the eye doctor had really good reviews. They were super kind and speedy - I got my eyes checked and picked out frames all on my lunch break. I really appreciated that they called me to tell me the doctor was running a little behind schedule so that I didn't get there and have to wait! How many dr. Offices do that?! The shop is small, but mighty! The eye doctor was professional, kind, and skilled. I've apparently been wearing the wrong prescription for many years, but he triple checked everything with me. The woman who helped me pick out my frames was also very friendly and helpful! She even let me try the frames on outside so I would have the best lighting. Glasses came in on time and they work great! No more headaches, and they look fantastic. Exceptional service and a really personalized experience, they really take their time with you and make sure that you are fully satisfied. Extremely rare find in the city. Super pleased! Will definitely continue using them for my future needs, and I highly recommend. The front of the house staff was extremely friendly and was very helpful in helping me select a pair of glasses that framed my face well. Dr. Kim was very nice and really took her time explaining everything she was doing, making me feel very comfortable about the service I was getting. I stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon to have a nose pad replaced on a pair of designer sunglasses.The really kind and helpful clerk that helped me did a great job and exceeded my expectations. The entire transaction was extremely quick and the clerk even polished my sunglasses with one of those little cloths that takes off Dust and fingerprints afterwards. Cheater! They blatantly lied to me that my insurance company wouldn't cover the costs for ONLY frame and that my insurance will cover IF both frame together with the glass/lens is bought. What a lie! My frame broke so I just wanted to get it replaced and keep my transition lens (old). Then they got authorization (without MY explicit consent) for (1) eye exam (2) frame (3) contact lens, when all I wanted was a frame. Bloody criminals! I wonder how on earth they can practice theft like this in the middle of Manhattan in the name of business. They need to be reported. Don't go there. read more

Since 1996 I have been going to Manhattan Eyeworks. I started in the East Village, and now I go to the store on 9th Avenue. I kid you not, every pair of frames I have received over these past 14 years I have got from Manhattan Eyeworks. The selection is super, and the vibe at the store is fantastic. There's a true neighborhood feel to the place, and when I shop there I'm treated like a friend. The doctor's are fast, available, and very helpful. The prices are pretty low, and competitive as well. And the best part about the place is Marina. She is one of the owners, and also pretty much runs the show. Her suggestions are ALWAYS dead on. She knows what looks good on anyone's face. She has a great sense of humor, and is so friendly. I tell friends to go here whenever they are in need, and they're always more than happy. I wouldn't give my business to anyone else. From the exams, to picking out frames, to dealing with pesky insurance companies, the folks here have been over the top helpful! They got my prescription wrong TWICE and then would not redo the glasses even after the doctor admitted fault in giving me the wrong prescription. They wasted my time, had me come in for multiple tests, then they said it's too bad that they got the prescription wrong and would not redo them. They are only interested in money, they will not fix any problem you might have (which they create). Please stay FAR AWAY. read more

The exam was well-done, not rushed, and the optometrist was very considerate and thoughtful about what I'd need. I wanted to like them, but I just can't. First prescription was wrong. That's fine. They admitted and got replacement quickly. Ordered sunglasses too, but they aren't right. Pin fell out of my glasses (not their fault) and came in to get repair. They said they would order replacement frames. Never did. Friendly, but they don't follow through and quality is not high. This shop was so helpful to me. I had broken my good eyeglasses and left my good sunglasses in a cab, so the only prescription specs I had were older and in need of repair. As I'm without a vision plan currently I wasn't sure anyone could help without me having to pay for an eye exam. These guys fixed my old frames for free and in less than 5 minutes! They wouldn't take cash when a tip was offered. As soon as I have vision coverage back I will definitely use them for my next glasses! Excellent neighborhood service! read more
