Well, I've been in Ocala for almost a half year now and, I've been searching for a good deli or sub shop and failing miserably. The other day I caved and actually got an Italian combo from Wawa. Usually Wawa is ok for the average sandwich but, for an Italian combo, it was shit. Subways and Jersey Mike Is a joke. So, I tried this place. They certainly had a big selection of things, including seafood. They didn't have an "Italian Combo sub" per se but, they had something called the Manhattan Sub. Without asking what it consisted of, I figured that with a name like that, it HAD to be some sort of Italian combo. I get it home and I'm enthusiastic as they put the sub in an actual sub bag. BUT, I was quickly disappointed that it was wrapped in foil. No sir. That would be if it were a hot sandwich, not cold. Should be butchers paper. I open it up and it looked a bit messy. It ended up being turkey and roast beef with provolone cheese, lettuce tomato and onion with oil and vinegar and Mayo. Not an Italian by any stretch of the imagination but, I was starving so.... The indicator of any good sub is the bread and, well, it IS Florida and, that's average at best. The sandwich was messy (and it shouldn't have been), falling apart while eating (consistency of bread perhaps?) But, not horrible. I might try their gyros if in the area again. read more

Yum! I didn't even get a chance to take a photo of everything we ordered. I ordered the shrimp pasta and a Greek salad. And the salad was huge along with the pasta. I had a few bites of their lamb gyro (YUM), and a couple of their hot wings. I don't know what's in their wing sauce, if they buy it or make it, but it was GOOD. It was busy when we went so we placed an order at the counter and ran an errand down the road. I'm not sure if they're offering dine in. Looked like a lot of people ordered through the drive through or went inside to take their order Togo. My most memorable experience from all this was how good the better smelt walking in. I was down in Ocala on a purchasing mission, and it came around to lunch time. Driving around I tried to go to a place that I really liked, only to find that it was closed for remodeling. So just riding around, sort of meandering my way North through the city and looking for something that piqued my interest, I came across Manhattan Subs & Gyros. Now, this place is not exactly in the best part of town, and obviously caters to the blue collar workers in the area more than anything, but that doesn't mean the food isn't good! The place is going through some phases right now, and had supplies (paper goods, that sort of thing) stored out in the customer area, but there were still tables and seats available. I ordered a gyro and also a philly cheesesteak, as they both sounded good at the time. It didn't take all that long to get the food out to me, and I dug in. The philly cheesesteak I found to be a bit on the under seasoned side... it needed salt at least. It was decent and had an appropriate amount of meat and other things in it for the price, but it just needed something to kick the flavor up a couple of notches. The gyro was quite good however. Nicely spiced, good amount of fillings. I really enjoyed it! I left with a full tummy and a note in my head that there was a place in Ocala that knows how to make a good gyro! read more

After a morning and most of the afternoon at Silver Springs we were looking for a good meal. One of my friends refuses to dine in during covid and wasn't keen on eating outside either (especially because it was a drizzly day) so when we saw this was a non-chain drive through we knew it'd be a good compromise. We all got the lamb gyro combos which were an amazing deal. The pita was warm and fluffy, filled to bursting with meat and lettuce/tomato/onion and a generous layer of tzatziki sauce. Their Philly cheesesteak and gyros are unmatched. You literally couldn't ask for better. However, when fellow reviewers mention the part of town it's in they mean this: "this part of town is predominantly black so I assume it's a bad part of town, despite it being home to one of Ocala most prestigious centers -- a magnet school for gifted children -- and that one of Ocala's major shopping areas is literally down the road." So we've driven past this place for the past many many years. It's not exactly in the nicer part of town. This time when we drove by there wasn't anyone there so we figured we would stop and try them. The owner (middle eastern) greeted us with a friendly hello and welcome (nice start). I asked how the gyros are and if they are off the kabob spit. He replied 'Best gyros in town I guarantee it'. We ordered two gyros and one order of fries (the fries feed the 3 of us). The gyro was very tasty and IMO was properly assembled, lots of gyro meat, lots of tzatziki sauce, sliced tomatoes and sliced onions. The pita bread you could tell was very fresh and possibly homemade. Hmmm good..just writing this review I'd like another. While this place does appear to be a hole in the wall. Being new to Ocala, I was looking for a good Gyros. After reading the reviews I decided to try this place out. It was later in the evening so I used the drive through. After taking my order, I realized they left off one Gyros. I got back in the drive through lane. As I approached the menu to order, they switched off the lights. I was told they had cleaned the grill. I explained that I was missing a part of my order. He repeated again that the grill was cleaned. I ended up with one of my family members not having a sandwich. Honestly the gyros was OK. Nothing special. The tzatziki sauce was pure mayonnaise, not yogurt. It was disgusting. I will not be back. Customer Service is very important to me.
