When I was pregnant i had some food aversions but some filipino food was not one of them. I went to few filipino restaurants and this place was one of them. Not sure why this is rated low. They have a lot of portions and food looks fresh. They have lots of veggies and seafood which i really appreciate since other places mostly serve meat. The are several things I love about this place .. they do not use msg , it's clean !! And food is consistent.... never too salty or too greasy... they may not have everything you typically see in other Filipino restaurants , but to me less means fresh ! And you I know at times they will do certain dishes if you order by phone.. they make great puncit with the Chinese sausage !! Most of all Imelda and her family are always very pleasant ! In the area and was craving Filipino food for lunch. Totally wasn't feeling like Burger King, Quznos, etc. This place is set up cafeteria style and has the usual typical Filipino food that my relatives cook at home. We got the dinuguan (chocolate meat---as we tell the kids), beef with grilled onions (bistek), and pork stew (forget the name of it). Had to get extra scoops or rice because there's no way that 2 scoops of rice to feed the 3 of us was gonna even cut it. Food was a litle warm, and should've been hot (only the rice was hot). That steam food table needs to be cranked up more. Taste quality was bland, sort of like cooking for the masses if you will, quite under seasoned. The two chicken empanadas we also got were seasoned okay, just the right amount of salty/sweetness in the filling, but it was filled with mostly potatoes, not chicken. That was disappointing since they should tell their customers that it they were potato/chicken empanadas, very misleading. We'll continue to get our empanadas at Valerios instead and perhaps skip this place all together. if you do go in, just enjoy the Mitchell's ice cream-you can't go wrong there. read more

Cafeteria style restaurant. Choose what you want and you pick a table to sit down and eat. Most of the stuff I wanted, you couldn't order with the 2 item combo (you had to order al la carte). Chicken adobo was very old and dry as well as on salty side. It also seems like the chicken bones are all broken in because every bite I took had a shard in it. The soup was pleasant. Flavorful broth and the chicken & shrimp wasn't over cooked. The flan was overly sweet and way too thick. It had a more egg taste to it as well instead of cream. read more

Cute little restaurant in the 280 Metro Mall in Colma with friendly service and tasty fast food served turo-turo style. We looked in the glass case and pointed to what we wanted to try and then paid for it at the cashier area. We tried the adobo (chicken) which was moist and flavorful, the lumpia shanghai and a turon (fried banana). We added some rice too that we used to soak up the adobo sauce--so good. I wished the lumpia were larger only because they were pretty good! We chose the ones made with chicken. Prices are reasonable and the whole vibe is family oriented and relaxed. read more

Tried breakfast here. Not much experience with Filipino food. Loved the vegetable pork soup! I asked for more vegetables - okra, eggplant, long beans, lots of healthy stuff. The soup has a wonderful sour flavor, which comes from the peppers they use - similar to some Chinese dishes. - No MSG - Home made healthy soup with lots of vegetables - Great flavor - Ordered eggs to go with the soup Honestly, when I walked in I was hesitant. In fact I watched a couple walk in and walk out, also hesitant to try. At first it looks like all sausage and fried food (not my thing). The soup is the last item you'll see towards the back. I always order the sinigang pampano here. They always cook their food everyday. It's fresh and clean.

The staff is quite attentive and the restaurant was clean. Those were the only positive things I found. Food tasted the way food tastes at Chinese buffets after sitting there for a few hours and the rice I got was mushy and sticky. I won't come back, I rather eat Taco Bell or some low quality food but no way I would return. read more

280 Metro Center already has such a limited number of eateries that its a travesty that Manila Eatery continues to operate. You would think that they would try to increase business by creating flavorful dishes where the ingredients are fresh and the food tasty. But then again, maybe they think they can get away with it because they really are the only "sit-down" place to eat in this strip mall. Sad to say, but this was yet another bad experience with Filipino food. I decided to try the old standby, chicken adobo, plus the menudo. The menudo wasn't too bad- the pork was awfully fatty, but overall, it was a decent dish. I've had better, so I'm sure that I won't be coming back for this. As for the chicken adobo, what a disappointment- the chicken was dry, dry, dry and though the sauce had a good vinegary kick to it, it was accompanied by an unappetizing layer of oil on top. I don't think I've ever eaten so little at a time when I was so hungry. I ate about half the menudo, but left the vast majority of the chicken adobo behind. I really should have just gotten a couple of scoops of Mitchell's ice cream and eaten that for lunch. But at least, now I know- if its time for lunch at the 280 Metro, its going to be either Burger King or Quizno's from now on. 2 stars for the menudo, 1 star for the chicken adobo, and 1 star for over-charging me for the 99 cents can of Arizona ice tea. read more

Halo-halo (dessert drink - a mix of beans, dried rice, ice cream, ice, etc.) And * MITCHELL'S ICE CREAM!!! * yay I had the coconut pineapple and the lychee flavors. So good! Now, every time I come to the Metro Center for something, I'll try to stop in here just for a scoop or two of Mitchell's. It beats standing in line at other ice cream joints. I wouldn't mind at least trying their "food to-go" but there wasn't much food left when I went (on a Thursday night around 7ish PM). I was hoping for some lumpia. It wasn't as bad as I expected it to be based on the location, prices and the fact that the food was served on hot trays and looked like it had been sitting out for a LONG time. (I would not normally eat at the place that looked this questionable, but I was having blood sugar issues and needed to get something in my system FAST!) They have no vegetarian options so I had to eat tilapia that was served to me in it's entirety - head sitting on the pate next to the decapitated body. The fish was accompanied by 2 scoops of white rice, which had a soapy flavor to it... I was happy to know that they were using soap, but I'd prefer not to find out by tasting it... I used to manage the Men's Wearhouse next door to the restaurant, so this used to be one of the most convenient places for me to get lunch or dinner. Now, even though I'm an hour away, I still find reasons to go to the Metro Plaza and eat here. I'm second generation Filipino, so I don't get to eat too many Filipino dishes at home like when I was a kid, so it's always a treat for me to eat the food I grew up with. The cook, from what I was told, is Kapangpangan, meaning that he comes from the Pampanga province in the Philippines. Kapangpangans are regarded throughout the Philippines as the best cooks in the country. That said, what is considered "good food" to a Filipino, doesn't necessarily translate as "edible" to Americans. (Hello, ever heard of Balut?) Try to remember that this place serves AUTHENTIC FILIPINO food, and not a watered down American version. Okay, so some people may think that some of the food smells "weird," but to me, the smell is very familiar, and it takes me back to when almost every meal I ate was homecooked by my parents. For breakfast, they serve garlic rice with Tocino or Longanisa and a fried egg. Almost anyone can enjoy that. During lunch and dinner hours, they serve very traditional Filipino dishes, like Sinigang, Caldereta, Adobo, and occasionally, they will cook Kare-kare. The Kare-kare is awesome, although I know that most people who are not used to Filipino food will find the "bagoong" repulsive. They also serve lumpia, meat and desserts on skewers, halo-halo, and of course, pancit. Those are the "safe choices" for people who just want to dip their feet in Filipino cuisine. Now, after working in the city and having enjoyed food from hundreds of places in the bay area, I can say that I know a little bit about restaurants. First, they go out of business FAST. Not this one- it's been here for years, and they don't look like they're leaving anytime soon. Only good restaurants can do that. Second- most places that get so called "great reviews" are expensive restaurants that pretentious pricks eat in to make themselves feel important. Finally- you have to set realistic expectations for what you are going to experience when you eat in a particular restaurant. When you pay 6-8 bucks for a meal, don't expect that they turn on the stove to make your food fresh from scratch when you order- you're not paying enough! I give this place 4 stars because they are excellent, relative to price and what's available. I nixed one star because the dessert options are limited. read more

I'm all for Filipino fast food! This dive reminds me of the Lumpia House in San Ramon that was recognized in one of those food magazines. The place was super CLEAN (and for a Filipino restaurant, that's hard to find) ... and the fact I arrived 30 minutes to closing probably had something to do with it. The food is precooked, so can't ding 'em for not having fresh, just off the stove food. If you frequently eat out at Filipino restaurants, then you'll know that Filipino food is NOT cheap- so to you it may be overpriced. If you want cheap, then I suggest that you head over to the closest Pacific Super Market and have your mom cook you up a meal. The only bad thing I have to say is their "Mitchell's" ice cream didn't taste like Mitchell's. Tasted like ice cream stored in a freezer for years. Chicken Adobo = delicious. I rarely order this dish, so this was a pleasant surprise yesterday as it was also freshly made. Lots of savory flavor with hints of sweetness. Vegetable dish = good. Plenty of okra, green beans, eggplant and salty shrimp flavor! Shanghai lumpia = Crispy and full of flavor. 4/$1.00. I had to get a dozen! Pop it in like candy!! Maja blanca = good. My first time having it. The pudding had a good for consistency with bits of corn and toasted coconut flakes on the side. Creamy coconut! Service = friendly. I never know (or don't recognize) the names of dishes, and they've always been kind enough to tell me what's inside the dishes, too. Over the years, the food quality has improved and I'm happy to support this small local business. Oh, and they have select Mitchell's ice cream flavors. Try their halo halo! Often, Filipino restaurants serve tocino or tapa or pork adobo swimming in oil and fatty. I noticed that Manila Eatery ' s tocino, tapa and pork adobo hardly had any fat, leaner, actually very meaty. The nilaga also wasn't swimming in oil. Sign says No MSG too. I ended up ordering the monggo which was very tasty. Compliments! Food was very well prepared. I'm on a low fat diet and I feel the monggo didn't break my diet. Although prices seem a bit higher than other Filipino restaurants, you actually get more for your money. I entered this establishment haphazardly after throwing down too much money on a pillow I probably don't need at one of the umpteen bedding/mattress stores that's closing down in this area. They would probably profit if they realized that true Asians, like myself, sleep on the floor or atop some form of futon, but that's beside the point. At this point I hadn't had Filipino food in over a year due to me being conveniently "relocated" to a different state without a bountiful Filipino populace, (courtesy of the United States Army) any kind of Filipino cuisine I had this day was bound to be good. Until I found out they were out of Chicken adobo. I ended up settling for Pork Adobo and Tapa which were definitely great but not the best I've had; I do like my Pork Adobo a little bit more sour than what they offer here, and by a little bit I mean that with every bite of the succulent pork I also want to be cringing because the meat is as sour as a thousand lemons. The Tapa could have been slightly drier, but their lack of aridity was offset by the awesome dipping vinegar they have. Oh and in true fashion of generous Filipino hospitality, the lady gave me an extra scoop of rice with my meal, yay. I always judge a Filipino restuarant by how they make their Kare-Kare. It's kinda like the gold standard. In case you didn't know Kare-Kare is a Filipino dish. Basically it's a stew of Oxtail and mixed vegetables in a peanut butter sauce. Judging by their Kare-Kare...the 'Eatery is pretty decent. Some places who will go nameless but far less peanut butter and too much corn starch and food coloring. Shame on them. The Tocino is serviceable. The Pork Adobo was succulent. Great affordable place to satisfy my Filipino food craving. My uncle calls places like this a "point-point joint" where you literally point to what you want to eat and they serve it up. It's close to what I remember as home cooking at my relatives' house. I think this place is good for catering, too. One afternoon I was eating lunch and I saw my Auntie here picking up a big tray of food for a party. She said she goes here all the time. I don't think there is any practical way to cut back on the oil and fat in Filipino food without taking away from the flavor BUT, this place is not as greasy as other Filipino food places, and it does not look like the dishes are sitting in a puddle of oil. I appreciate that I can see the cooks in the back making fresh batches of food to replenish the "point-point" selection, and that they do not charge a lot for what you get. read more

Went here today with my mom for lunch. I ordered dinuguan and she ordered pakbet I think not sure but they were both delicious and that's all it mattered. It came with 2 scoops of rice but we had to order another 2 scoop of rice because the food was delicious, total: $8.27 what more can you ask for. Cheap and delicious food and once again my tummy is satisfied. For dessert, mitchell's chocolate chip ice cream it was good too but it had that powdery taste. They are always so good to us when we come In to order. Their soups are delicious, and this place usually gets pretty busy so come a little earlier if you can but they will take good care of you. Okay...this is my first time trying out filipino food. Okay I have to say their lumpia is good for the price of 3 for $1.00. Not bad suitable for my budget when I'm working nearby the place. Last Tuesday, I bought a plate and for some reason the pancit had a really funny smell (BAD SMELL...like it went bad). I didn't want to touch my plate after opening it.
