We stopped in around 7pm on Saturday and there was only a handful of dinners, so we were able to get seated right away. The service was quick and food came out fast. They do close at 8pm, so as it got close to 8pm, we could see them starting to prepare to close, but they did not rush us. Food here is pretty consistently good. The ambience was perpetually lackluster because of location and design. It could be better, to catch more attention. The service was decent on a busy day. The price was reasonable and for the food on the other end was bland, with a bitter aftertaste. I've eaten at Karilagan a few times over the years. This time we came for Easter dinner. We ordered the Sizzling Sisig, Kare Kare, Pancit Miki Bihon, Sitaw Kalabasa sa Gata, and steamed rice. The portions were generous, and we ended up with a lot of leftovers. I would come back if we're specifically craving Filipino food, but not necessarily go out of my way. What stood out this visit was the 18% service charge, which felt a bit excessive for a non-high-end restaurant. In addition, we were charged $10 for steamed rice for four people, which seemed high, especially since we didn't even get extra rice and still had leftovers. Also, read the receipt carefully. This place is ok. For casual eating. The only problem is, their chicken dishes. The adobo, the chicken sinampalukan, any chicken dish. Except the fried ones. They tend to cook it very tender, like the beef soup. Which should not be. Chicken has a certain texture, and should not be very tender like fall of the bones, like beef soup. All others are good, but I stay away from any chicken dish, like adobo, etc. I got turned off. The cooks and workers inside, tend to get noisy also. Manager should at least teach them to tone down as this is their professional workspace, not treat it like at home. You can hear them be talking and yelling in the customer area. So I went here on a Sunday, it was kind of strange around opening time since I went early as expected for their brunch buffet, it seems that they opened late since I was expecting them to open as early as 9:00 AM but they open around 9:14 AM which was strange, they should open early next time so that they can gain more customers coming in on time. The Kare-Kare has a bit too much peanut butter which has that over saturated taste into it, put a little bit next time, but still tastes nice. The ambiance of the entire place feels modern and nice since it reminds me of the Philippines. It's a quiet place since I like it comparing to the noisy ambience comparing to Ling-Nam. The meat of the Kare kare kind of looked different from the last time I've had it a year ago and tasted more like tocino meat. I always go for the Lechon kawali. After we saw the Hell's Kitchen Broadway musical show in San Francisco on Wednesday, one friend suggested to eat at the Karilagan. It had been a while since my last visit at this restaurant. We drove separately and found good parking on the street. Dinner started at 5 pm so we just walked in for a party of 5. It was still quiet but shortly after people started coming. We ordered the Kare Kare, Beef Sinigang, Sizzling Sisig, Pakbet Ilocano and steamed rice. The dishes were promptly served and generous serving sizes. When we saw the food it made us more hungry as we did not have lunch as the show started at 1 pm. The beef was so tender. The veggies were fresh and tasty. Drinking the broth from the bowl was so delicious. The cooking of the kare kare was so satisfying. For dessert we ordered two Halo Halo. I liked how they served it because they had enough of sweet assortments. I took the pictures of the food and I forgot the Halo Halo. There were two servers and they were nice pleasing everyone on the table. The dining room was clean. The place was simply decorated. The automatic tip of 18% was fair for everything. Someone said it is in the menu, how many people look at the service charge before ordering? Horrible, traumatizing experience for our disabled child. Customer service and lack of empathy is ridiculous. We are a party of 9 with a service dog. We enter the restaurant. It is not very busy with plenty of available seats. The hostess/waitress immediately "You can't come in here" and motions her hand towards our daughter's service dog. We inform her that she is a service animal and she continues to state that we can't bring her in. She won't even come up to us and is saying this while continuing to multi-task in the restaurant. I ask her why we cannot and she keeps saying that we just can't. And I keep letting her know that we have a service animal and even point to the sign on their door. She then says we need a paper. I inform her that I have documentation and the service dog has tags, and she continues to say we can't bring the service dog in. She doesn't even attempt to look at any documentation. At this point, our party doesn't want to dine there anymore but I felt this still needed to be addressed since it isn't right. I asked again why we couldn't come in if we had a service animal. And she rudely responds talking under her breath and shaking her head. She then goes over to the other staff and it appears she asks one of them and they continue to say no. I stated to her, "so you're denying us access here due to our service animal". Again she shakes her, talks under her breath, and keeps trying to multi-task on the floor. We then walk out after about 5-10 minutes of this interaction. She follows us out and says she called the owner and we can come in but we need to stay on the side and my daughter's service dog needs to be put in the corner. I told her "no thank you, we're leaving" and also mentioned that we will be reporting this establishment to the ADA for denying us access due to our service animal. Sad, sad day. I was very disappointed by my visit to this restaurant. Staff is impatient, rude, and non-attentive. When I arrived I was waiting alongside a couple of other groups waiting to be seated, and it took quite some time for any of us to get acknowledged by the workers. Eventually a lady approached my mother and I and asked how many were in our party, and I let her know it was a party of two and without saying anything she quickly walked away to a table. Confused, I followed just for the lady to yell "Not yet!" when she noticed I came along. Communication from staff can go a long way during situations like these with customers. As for the food, I will say the dishes are decently priced and portions are quite big. However, flavor wise everything was overly salty (aside from lumpia). Sisig was quite dry, and I wasn't a fan of the canned jalapeños as a topping. Lumpia was decently sized, and it tasted like your average lumpia. Lastly, something I really wanted to note was the fact that the person who took our bill along with my mother's card chose the tip themselves. The chicken tinola had a good mix of chicken and vegetables with the amazing gingery and garlicky broth. Pancit Bihon was a huge plate and was very flavorful! Having grown up in the Bay Area, especially around South San Francisco and Daly City, the Filipino influence is strong so one can expect that the cuisine is a reflection of that culture. The interior is simple, elements of the Philippines adorn the walls and we also lucked out to miss the lunch crowd and were seated right away a bit after 1pm. When you look at the menu, it's extensive. If you love Filipino food, the variety makes you feel like you're at a relatives' party and they've put out 20 dishes with all the sides and you have to figure out what to eat because it looks so good. From silog options available all day to soups (bulalo was amazing), appetizers (calamari comes with vinegar and onion sauce for the side), meat dishes (get the binagoongan, delicious) and seafood/veggies (the Bicol express was my favorite!), there is something to satisfy everyone's palette! And the portions are huge! We came with a party of 5 total and ordered 5 dishes and went home with leftovers enough for another meal for 3 more people. Here are the dishes I recommend: - Crispy pata (5 stars, 2 shanks for $20): crispy pata is a double fried pork hock. The serving size for this dish at Karilagan is massive. It's served with a delicious spiced vinegar sauce on the side. - Sizzling sisig (4 stars, $13.95): sisig is pork chunks and some intestines cooked with garlic, onion, peppers on a sizzling plate. It's delicious. Order this. - Bulalo (4.5 stars, $18.00): bulalo is beef shank soup served with vegetables. If you want a soup to complement your other hearty Fiipino dishes, this is the dish to get! - Sitaw kalabasa (4 stars, $14.00): this is shrimp and pork cooked in a spicy coconut milk with squash and green beans - it's probably very different from other Filipino dishes you've tried and is a nice veggie dish to have on the side. - Pancit miki bihon (4 stars, $12.50): this is a mix of egg and rice stick noodles). FYI - I rarely dine in here. My relationship with K is mainly To Go orders. FOOD: BIG portions. You will have leftovers. I consider this value cuz I'm also getting a meal or 2 afterward. Overall quality is gooooood. TIP: If you ain't Filipino, you should know that the same dish is prep'd differently between each Filipino restaurant - learn why, our culture is dope & diverse. Our fave here is the Sizzling Sisig - lean cuts of pork with just enough fat to flavor it up. Ask for the jalapeños & onions on the side if you weak (j/k). My daughter was craving for a Filipino food. We waited to be seated , two couples were ahead of us. The couple in front of us left. So, we were waved to come but the buser/ server in a high voice told my daughter, WAIT!!! YOUR TABLE IS NOT READY!!! So we wait in line again. They are short of staff, the server is also the person that cleans the table. They are loud and yelling at each to relay messages while there were people dining in. I hate to give this review, but it was a rude service for a customer to automatically add tip without customer's approval. Honestly, my friend recommended to try this place because of their food being flavored good. The portions were fair for the price. The service was not pleasant, not friendly and accommodating. Thumbs down and will not recommend fellow filipinos to go here. i read some of the reviews which they did also automatically add tip on there on. Actually for a party of two, it's our decision how much tip we want to give them. This was a rude and disrespectful to the customer. I didn't complain as to respect the other customer's in there. WARNING: What is with your auto-service charge regardless of the number of people dining? If you are going to charge even with two people, you need to inform your customers. This is seems illegal.
