Stopped by Manila Sunset for lunch today and went with the two-entrée combo--**lechon kawali** and **pork sinigang**--and both were absolutely on point. What really stood out is that they "cook the food fresh to order". I had to wait a few minutes, but honestly, that's a good sign. Unlike a lot of the typical "turo-turo" (point-point) Filipino spots where food has been sitting out, everything here tasted freshly made and full of flavor. The lechon kawali had that perfect crispiness and you could tell it was just fried. The pork sinigang had a rich, comforting broth with just the right tang. It could have stood to have a little more veggies, but all-in-all, it was enjoyable. I used to go to their East Hollywood location and they never disappointed, so when I saw they had one here in the Valley, I had high expectations--and they definitely delivered. My husband placed an order online. He ordered a large pancit malabon, 4 bibinka, and 6 puto bumbong. He picked it up the same day and actually added 2 more orders of bibinka. I was so excited because I had been craving it for a long time. As soon as he got home, we started eating it and realized the bibinka he added to his order(which was in a separate bag) tasted funky. The ones that were in the box tasted normal, so we threw those additional 2 orders! What a waste and it's not inexpensive! The pancit was a bit in the salty side but lemon fixed it. The puto bumbong was defintely hard and very chewy. I guess the quality of food has gone down, at least for the stuff he ordered. Other foods served are probably good, but knowing that they are known for those foods I mentioned, it really is very disappointing. I just wish they could improve eh on the quality of their food , especially the ones my husband ordered. We had been placing orders with them for a long time. 0- Star Extremely disappointing experience with Manila Sunset - North Hills. I changed my original order from palabok to Lumpiang Shanghai (75 pcs) and paid the price difference. When they handed me the order, they confirmed it was 75 pieces. However, when I got home, it already looked like less than 75, so I took the time to count each piece individually--and I only received 50 pieces. That means I essentially paid an extra $12 for nothing. I understand that it was Christmas Eve and very busy, but that is not an excuse for giving the wrong quantity--especially after confirming the order was correct. Customers should receive exactly what they paid for, regardless of how busy it is. This is not a small mistake--it's poor order handling and careless service. If I hadn't double-checked, this would've gone unnoticed. I expected better accuracy and accountability. Can't wrap up an LA tour with Filipina titas (aunties) without taking them to Manila Sunset for some Pancit Malabon, Lumpiang Shanghai, and Dinuguan. I'd say taste-wise, I prefer the Rancho Cucamonga location, but they were really nice to accommodate us even if we arrived close to closing time. We weren't rushed and they were helpful with our needs in terms of sauces and to go boxes. They also gave us a free soup which was really nice! read more

Disappointed in my recent experience here.. The prices of the 2 item plate went up.. Fine. However, we noticed that the entree portions were shrunk!! You can see the difference in my photos of the same meal from last year. I only had 5 pieces of chopped pork for the Lechon Kawali, and 2 pork pieces in my pork sinigang soup. Really?? The rice portions were also smaller and it's because of the small-sized paper plates used. Super disappointed for spending money for this meal. I used to be able to have leftovers for a second meal, but today there wasn't any left. I don't think I'm coming back anymore, even if I crave Filipino cuisine again. I ordered from Manila Sunset in North Hills large tray of Sisig. It was nicely presented and it looked delicious. However though when my guests and I tasted the Sisig, it was really gross and disgusting because it was just mostly fat! Of course I was expecting it to have SOME fat and snout. However, their Sisig was mostly FAT! They advertised that it would also have crunchy pork in it but we honestly barely tasted any crunchy pork. No one in my party wanted to eat the Sisig. Obviously no one also wanted to take some home, which typically in Filipino parties, Sisig is the first dish gone. This is the worst Sisig my guests and I have ever tasted. I just wasted $90.00 on this! Don't order Sisig from Manila Sunset. It doesn't taste good and it is just all fat! Not worth it!!! read more

It's unfortunate that we've been coming here for many many years since I was a little kid and how things have changed since we have not been here for at least a year or more. It's too bad that after ordering a to-go Palabok, that our container only seemed to have been less than half full with more veggies on top rather than the pancit itself, to hide what little they put in. Whenever we order for to go or dine in, Manila Sunset provides excellent customer service. They are always consistent with providing great customer service. We visited at noon on a weekday. The place was busy but not crowded. We received our order within 15 minutes. Everything was freshly cooked and made. Our Bibingkang Galapong was steaming hot and it was delicious. Came with coconut. The cheese inside the bibingka was on point. The Pancit Malabon is flavorful. The shrimp as topping is just right and not over cooked. I ordered one plate of Pancit Malabon and we got it to go so it came in a box. The serving is good enough for 2 people. Their Bibingkang Galapong serving is also good enough for 2 people. Ordered the Pancit Mallabon and Bibingkang Galapong to go. Both dishes were made to order, so they came out fresh and hot after 10 minutes. I went on a Wed afternoon when there were no customers eating in house, but they seemed to get a lot of to go orders during this time. According to my Filipino friend who is familiar with this spot, it gets very busy and they quickly run out of the bibingkang during the holiday season. Having never eaten either of these dishes, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed both! I love the food at this location. You need to try their Pancit Malabon which is Rice noodles topped with shrimps, eggs, chicharon bits, vegetables and special Manila Sunset sauce. The flavors jump with each bite. Their Tokwa't Baboy which is Deep fried tofu and pork cuts in a garlicky, sweet and sour special sauce topped with scallion is crispy and savory. Another favorite of mine is their Lumpia Sariwa which is Sautéed mixed vegetables rolled in a crepe-like wrapper with lettuce and peanuts, served with semi-sweet sauce. For all the food we got, it took under 15 minutes. The restaurant itself is located in a small plaza and there's not much parking. Today, we got the pork liempo plate, the pork sisig plate, arroz caldo, lumpia shanghai, and of course, the beloved bibingka! Everything was good. My favorites were the lumpia shanghai and the arroz caldo. The price vs ratio of what I paid for is horrible. They said the tray is good for 4-5 ppl... it was hardly a tray... it's more like a to go container you use after a party. The portion I got was only good for my first born. I know inflation is in effect but come on now, this will hardly feed two ppl at best! 4 if w are feeding 5 year olds! If they offered me the real tray, I would have been ok to pay the extra $10-$15 for an actual tray. The bibingka is great, but none of the ones I got this time around had no salty egg on top and I don't even understand why give that coconut especially if they seem to have squeezed the gata out of it. I've visited this Manila Sunset location in North Hills multiple times, and every experience has been excellent. My absolute favorites from their menu are the Pancit Malabon--no other place makes it quite like Manila Sunset--and the bibingka, which is always perfectly cooked: moist, fluffy, and delicious. I've also tried several other dishes on the menu and have enjoyed every one of them. If you're looking for authentic Filipino cuisine, this restaurant is a must-try. Despite how busy the restaurant usually is during my visits, I've consistently received outstanding customer service from Paloma, one of the cashiers. She is always welcoming, offers a warm smile, and is efficient, accurate, helpful, and professional. I've even seen her step away from the cashier area to clean up a table left untidy by customers--clearing the trash, wiping it down herself, or picking up litter from the floor. Not every fast-food and restaurant employee goes above and beyond like that. It's clear Paloma takes pride in her work, and I hope management recognizes what a valuable team member they have in her.
