Depending on whom you ask, Amsterdam is known for quite a few things; namely weed and prostitutes shoot up to the top of that list among several things. I'm not a smoker of any type, and I'm not (at least i think) interested in prostitutes, so the big two things that people stereotypically boast about coming to Amsterdam for, don't really apply to me. But food? I'll eat everything in sight, and run a country into famine if I could. From what I could surmise, among the things that I should keep my eyes peeled for were bitterballen, Dutch pancakes and well, frites, or basically french fries. But french fries are delicious, so I kept an open mind about seeking out something so ordinary. It's hard to not be intrigued by a place named after a peeing statue in Brussels that serves french fries in Amsterdam, but my girlfriend and I were quite hungry, so without much hesitation, we came to the place that boasted the best frites in Holland. It's window service only, but the line moves fast. If there's anything at all that separates Mannekin Pis from any old American french fry merchant, it's the abundant variety of sauces to put on them, other than plain old ketchup. On this European vacation, I discovered Andalouse sauce, and I found myself putting it on everything I could, including the gigantic cone of fries I got from Mannekin Pis. And it's dirt cheap; at least compared to some of the food bills I'd been running up all throughout Europe over the last few days. 4 Euros for a huge cone full of fries seemed like an absolute steal, compared to paying 200 for dinner at the Eiffel Tower or something, and I was about as sated afterward. The point is, Mannekin Pis is awesome. It's in a very central location in Amsterdam, near the city's center, also near Grand central station, and multiple rail/bus lines. Eating frites was on my husbands list of things to do in Amsterdam. We managed to find this one while on our way back to our Airbnb from Dam Square. There was a short line for it since a futbol game that was about to begin was having a parade. It was fun to watch the parade going by while waiting in line. The lady who took our order was very friendly. She explained what some of the most popular sauces tasted like so that we could make an informed decision. We ended up with two different sauces. She did one drizzle on one side and another on the other. This gave us a chance to try two unique flavors. The frites were delicious; golden and crispy. There was a statue by the restaurant with a couple of little holders to put your frites so that you could grab them with the little fork. The statue was kind of dirty and people were trying to squeeze around with hopes of getting to use it. We tried to use this method, but ultimately ended up holding them ourselves. read more

Their medium-sized fries are pretty large. My boyfriend and I shared one and it was a bit too much for us. We couldn't even finish it. We didn't try the potatje oorlog, since we tried it at Vleminck and weren't huge fans. So we opted for samurai sauce, which is supposedly super spicy, but it tasted no spicier than your regular old spicy mayo. The fries were nice and crispy but a tad oily - at least oilier than the fries from Vlemink. Manneken Pis isn't bad if you're craving fries and you happen to be in the area. Wow, their large size was indeed large!! Too bad in the shuffle of time that I didn't get to take a single full-length photo with these gigantic fries. If I were to hold them up to my head, it'd be bigger than my face! We started munching on the fries immediately. We used our hands (the plastic forks only proved useful afterwards when we were nearing the tip of the cone). The curry topping wasn't a typical yellow curry as I expected but a red curry sauce that was slightly sweet. It was a rich flavour and different from the creamy mayonnaise topping. The creamy mayonnaise topping seemed the more popular topping and accepted by everyone. When I saw a huge line of people waiting on a freezing morning, I took it as a good sign. The fries were definitely worth the wait & cold! Super crispy exterior with a smooth and buttery interior, also they had every sauce under the sun! I ordered a small for myself, but received what I could only describe as a pile of fries! I dream about Mannken Pis fries when I'm away from Holland. They're just thick and salty enough, served hot in a paper bag with a mini plastic fork so you can easily walk and eat. If you're lucky enough to visit Holland and pick up some Mannken Pis, you've got to do it right by getting it with mayonnaise, satesaus (a sort of peanut sauce with a kick), or oorlog (a mix of mayonnaise, satesaus, and onions). Considering this place is right next door to my hotel, I'm surprised I managed to hang on until my last day to try these infamous fries, voted best in Holland. 'twas okay. I ordered a small and it felt like a medium or a large that I would get in the States. Not that I'm complaining but they put a lot of fries and only a dollop of sauce so the fries to sauce ratio is not ideal. The fries were of bad quality (lots of black spots) and majorly consisted of small fragments, not large chunky pieces. Temperature was low (and got cold while eating), the fries seem to have waited for me for some time already, even though it was a busy Sunday noon. We both ordered medium fries and some sauce - my friends had cheese sauce and I had spicy mayo. First it was too hot to eat, but when I could - it was delish! Every bite was better than the other. Biggest portions of all the vlaamse frites shops we tried! We had to ask some people standing nearby if they really were eating a "small" - it looked so much like a medium elsewhere! A fries stand that's on the main busy street - stopped by for a snack. I got the truffle mayo dip which came in a cute separate pail container for me to dip my fries in, while everyone else's order got their sauce on top of the fries. I appreciate it was in a separate pail because it was less messy and I could save as a souvenir! Manneken Pis should be your first stop off of Centraal Station. What better way to refuel than to stuff your stomach with a fistful of verse vlaamse frites (or fresh Flemish Fries according to Google Translate). These fries are crispy, thick cut, full of potato (not just hollow and full of air), piping hot, and fresh. Even if there is a crowd, the line goes quickly and you will have your frites within minutes. This is a fry stand and you will be eating your frites on the sidewalk or walking. Unless you are sharing with a group, don't be greedy. Get a regular sized one or the small. The large is truly bigger than your head. I was like, "Whyyyyy did we order this? Are you crazy?" But we finished that large sucker and used every bit of the fake tasting cheese we ordered. It was delicious. Many times I have walked past it trying hard not to look at the fresh fries sizzling out of the fryer. Many times I have succumbed to getting just a small portion. It's the oil that maketh good fries, and they use good oil. I like to say that it's peanut oil but I am not sure. Anyway, the fries are spectacular. They have a bunch of sauces and toppings as well. I love the peanut sauce. I used to like curry sauce but lately I dig ketchup more. Oh, and you can't go wrong with onions on top of your fries. Especially tasty with the peanut sauce. Came here after a friend of mine recommended it, and as another reviewer mentioned, it's a very tourist thing to do. It is, but do yourself a favor grab some of their famous frites. They have signs saying that they were voted #1 in Holland, and I could see why. Their fries are thick, crispy on the outside, and a little soft on the inside. They are a little bit salty, but overall, the flavor is just right. And yes, they smother your fries with whatever sauce you order. Their fritesauce is a delicious addition to your fries. I also had some with cheddar, but that was alright...it didn't really taste like cheddar. I recommend eating your fries as soon as possible, because they're not as great when they're cold. The line for this place was ridiculous. I only decided to wait the third time I walked past, as there were only about 20 people headed of me. To their credit, they are a well oiled machine and the wait was only about 10 minutes. They have three sizes and 24 different sauces that range from ketchup to more interesting options. I kept it simple with ketchup. The fries were just okay. Nothing remarkable, no real flavor/seasoning, and overcooked. I'd had some fries at my hotel the night before and they were fabulous. So, I don't know if one was more authentic (cooking process) than the other. It's pretty difficult to mess up fries but it shouldn't be rocket science to cook great ones, especially when you promote your fries as being voted the best in Amsterdam.
