I've had two very different experiences with this restaurant -- one solid, one frustrating -- which averages out to mediocre at best. My first visit was a takeout order of breakfast tacos that were pretty tasty. Based on that, I was hopeful for a good dine-in experience when I stopped by again recently with my mom for a late breakfast. This is a counter-service spot where you order at the register, grab a number, and seat yourself while they bring the food out. We arrived around 10 AM and it was packed. Despite the crowd, the line moved quickly, but that's where the efficiency ended. Most of the open tables were dirty, so we had to clean one ourselves with napkins. Not ideal. Then came the confusion around drinks. We never received cups after ordering -- despite asking three separate times. First, we were told the cups would come out with our food. When they didn't, we asked the food runner, who said he'd check on it but just disappeared into the kitchen. Finally, we had to go back to the counter a third time just to get cups for the fountain machine. That's a lot of back and forth for something basic. When the food finally arrived, it was lukewarm at best. I ordered two bacon breakfast tacos and a side of smashed potatoes. The tortillas were so hard they were practically inedible -- I ended up tearing pieces off and eating just the egg, bacon, and cheese filling. The potatoes were bland and also cold, like they'd been sitting out too long. It's disappointing because my first experience was solid. I'm hoping this was just an off day, but for nearly $40, this meal didn't feel worth it. The staff seemed overwhelmed and stretched thin, with just a handful of employees trying to juggle too many tasks during a rush. Cleanliness, service, and food temperature all suffered as a result. For now, this location won't be high on my list to return to. There are better breakfast spots in town that don't come with this much hassle. read more

I stopped by for the second time and ordered the Squawking goat sandwich (which is what I got last time). Came to just over $11, no side, but a decent sized sandwich. I dined in, and food came out quickly, within 5 minutes. Love the flavors of this knife and fork sandwich, the tangy goat cheese, the sweet red pepper jelly (which is more like a Thai sweet chili sauce to me, very little heat), and the well seasoned crispy chicken. The biscuits are good. The sides need work. For example for a good biscuit, provide a local well made sausage. Provide some unique butter along with the regular butter. Do not waste money on mimosa style drinks. Not fresh enough. There were overflowing dirty dish bins. Food sat at the pass for quite a while as we watched the workers stand around and talk. They were all nice but had absolutely no sense of urgency in taking orders, picking up or serving food. The 3 stars are totally because we liked the biscuits. Our second visit to this nifty breakfast forward restaurant in Florence was as delicious as the first. It has lot's of different takes on biscuits and gravy and other biscuit themed dishes. On this occasion I tried the High Steaks dish which was recommended to me by the guy taking my order (that guy was awesome for the record.) The High Steaks were a biscuit and gravy dish that also had country fried steak on top. The biscuits were great and the gravy was truly delicious. My husband and I decided to try this place out as he wanted biscuits and gravy for breakfast. We arrived at 7 am on a Monday morning. We went online to look at the menu because it's a counter order restaurant with no menu board. I ordered the "Power Bowl" eggs over medium. My husband ordered the "extreme biscuits and gravy" his eggs over easy. We got our own coffee and took a seat. 25 minutes later our order came out. My eggs were over hard. I did not eat them. His eggs were over medium. The "avocado" on my plate was a blob of brown, lemony sludge. My husband's biscuits and gravy were cold and over peppered. We both ate 1/4 of our plates. For me that meant I ate 1 Tbs of cooked spinach 2 pieces of overcooked bacon and a Roma tomato raw which was the best part of my meal. We definitely will not return. read more

This place has been open for a bit now, and I had the chance to stop in for late Breakfast on a Saturday. Sadly, their coffee machine was down, so I can't comment on its quality. I ordered The Cowboy, a biscuit with country fried steak, bacon, and egg on their scratch made biscuits. The biscuit is then covered with a liberal potion of their gravy. I also ordered their smashbrowns for a side. The biscuit itself was very good, soft and flaky, and I was really impressed with the country fried steak as well. Egg is cooked to order, so I did scrambled. Bacon was also tasty. The gravy isn't a true sawmill gravy, but it is very good, and goes well with the biscuits. And I have to say - the smashbrowns were excellent! Really solid place, had their coffee machine been working, it might have been a 5-star for me. When you call yourself a Biscuit Company your only real deliverable is to have amazing biscuits. Maple Street was a disappointment. Compared to other southern biscuit concepts like Biscuit Belly, Maple Street is only one star worthy. The images of fresh hot melty cinnamon biscuits with drizzled icing are actually rock hard stale biscuits that look and taste like plastic samples only put out for show. The icing was cold and the whole show piece was room temp at best. The Farmer was average at best and the biscuit was outshined by the apple butter. If Maple Street wanted to be honest with the public they should rebrand themselves as an apple butter company, at-least then they could deliver on their promise. The layout of the order counter is awkward. Am I in line? Should I stand with the door open? Should I hover over this family trying to eat? Hell if I know, this que to order is the red flag to turn around and go somewhere else. Lastly, they didn't bus any tables and the dirty dish pile was sky high. Meh. If you want to spend money on average overpriced prefab biscuits from the Sysco food truck you'll love this place! read more

As I stood at the counter with the plates I could see the color of the eggs, indicating they were cold... they were cold. I was asked if we wanted new eggs. I assumed everything else was cold too, but since we were just traveling through the area, didn't want to wait another 55 minutes. So I asked for and got a refund! Several people were also at the counter that had been waiting a long time. Another woman was getting a refund due to the long wait. So if this place looks busy steer clear if you don't want to wait. We were greeted by a gentleman at the counter who was kind and helpful. My partner got the biscuits and sausage gravy with eggs, and he ordered a serving of sausage meatballs. I got a biscuit with apple butter. Everything we got was absolutely delicious! The biscuits were fresh, as was the house-made jelly and apple butter. The sausage gravy was hearty and balanced in flavor. The coffee was tasty, too. We ate in, but there's outdoor seating, too. You order at the counter, get a number so your food is delivered, and you bus your own table. No frills, but overall nice. Absolutely kind and caring staff. I can't eat here due to my celiac disease, but I go here just about everyday I work for coffee and the owner and his staff are the best. Lovely concept, interesting menu, and a seriously awesome hot sauce bar. However the food was just meh and the service was terrible besides one gal who I swear was doing everything. She was our cashier, waitress, and I also saw her cooking and bussing tables. No other employees seemed to be doing much; one guy went out for 3 cigarettes while we were waiting and while this boss lady was hustling. The food wasn't terrible, but we waited 25+ min for it and there were only two other tables there (probably took so long because there was only one person doing EVERYTHING). My grits were passable but flavorless (until I added the awesome hot sauces...) and my egg was slightly overcooked. My husband's chicken and waffles were a mixed bag. The chicken was overcooked and gross and burnt, but his waffles were fluffy and amazing. Overall, not a great experience and I definitely won't be back. I wish I had tipped that woman who was working so hard an extra $20. She truly was one of the hardest working people I've seen in awhile and I cannot blame her for anything. Food was amazing. Service, best way to describe was...a little wonky? Just seemed like the worker I dealt with may have been newer or was just trained...I don't know but it just felt a little awkward. The food was delivered by who I think was one of the cooks, and it felt like the last thing he wanted to do was that. (Haha) it wasn't a bad experience but it wasn't a great experience. One thing I feel like may be problematic is the cash wrap area where you order, if it were busy I feel like things would definitely have flowed really bad. Not sure there's much more you can do with that layout however. However, the caveat to it was that the food was actually incredible. I ordered the chicken and waffles. It was delicious, the waffle was light and fluffy but still had a nice crisp to it. The chicken stole the show, the breading was really good and the chicken was nice and juicy. I live in Florida and have never heard of this restaurant until visiting with family here in Burlington over the holiday season stopped into the Florence location. The food being served here is very delicious and the staff is very polite and friendly. Love that they adhere to the true southern style of taste in their preparing of what is being cooked especially the cheesy grits, smashed browns with hints of a being a potato pancake and the fresh made flakey biscuits. Their Community Leader Ayssha Abner was very courteous and polite. Just be prepared that this isn't a seat down and order restaurant and you should do fine. Highly recommend this restaurant and will have to look for one when I get back down to the land of sunshine and sand! read more
