Had dinner at Maple Tree on Sunday. A $25 credit card hold was required for the reservation. The Wait staff were very friendly and personable. We had a party of four and ordered most of the appetizers which included alligator cheesecake, oysters, shrimp, brussel sprouts, fried green tomatoes and the crabcake. One member of our party ordered the etouffee entrée. No bread or butter was served with the etouffee which was a rather small portion for the price of almost $30.00. The appetizers were tasty for the most part. We ordered a bottle of the house cabernet. This proved to be a problem. It was delivered in a carafe, not a bottle and we were charged $77.00. The carafe served about 3 1/2 glasses of what is usually served in most restaurants. While the food was good, the cost of the house wine was an unpleasant surprise . This place is beautiful! A true gem. I went here on a whim because I was hungry and my boyfriend was "hangry"... but man we're we surprised. The place was romantic and has a very nice ambiance. The staff was professional and friendly from time we walked in, until our departure. This place was packed, but we were seated at the bar and still received full service. The bartender Emily was TOP tier and was hands down the best bartender I've encountered in months. Her DRINKS were fantastic. Her whiskey sour is A one, and her timing with our orders were great. Her conversation and interpersonal skills made the evening. We ordered catfish (our favorite) shrimp and grits, crab cakes, and the banana foster bread pudding! MEOW! I've been here three times now. First time was probably 4 stars, but the remaining two times have been incredible. With the exception of a few obvious choices like gumbo, etouffee, and jambalaya, the menu changes every year or so. The last time there, I had burnt ends with ancho molasses bbq sauce, cabbage with horseradish, gouda cheese grits, and a side of mac and cheese. He made our night special by knowing the menu options and guiding our recommendations with his expertise since he has been with the organization for 15 years. The food, service and ambiance were all amazing, and met and exceeded our expectations. Our expectations were exceeded when we received top notch quality service for waiting a few minutes longer for the High Top tables we reserved for our friend's birthday celebration. Visited for a early Friday date night, made reservations online, once we entered we were ask for the name and taken right to our table. The tables are socially distanced with plenty of space between patrons. Joseph our waiter was at our table promptly to introduce himself and take drink orders. I had a hurricane and it was delish. We had voodoo nuts as an appetizer it was the perfect little meatball stuffed with garlic with a light sauce and coleslaw like garnish. For entrees we had the catfish which was battered and seasoned perfectly and was served piping hot on a bed of dirty rice. The hubby had the spareribs they were good and tender and served with lightly dressed sweet potato wedges, they were very good. We also had the macaroni which was tasty. I'm embarrassed to say how many years I've meant to go there but it's considerably out of the way for us and there's so much great food in all parts of Chicago. But my lady suggested taking me there for my 72nd birthday. Now I really wish I'd come years ago when I had a bigger appetite! We had an Saturday afternoon reservation but traffic was horrendous. I'd actually given up on getting there at all when they called to see if we were coming and pushed the reservation back well over an hour. We were welcomed with birthday wishes by 3 delightful young women including who we'd spoken to. We were instantly seated with accommodation for my lady using a walker. From then on the service couldn't have been better. Attentive and responsive without being intrusive. But you want to know about food. Unfortunately we skipped the entree's. Honestly I've never found crawfish to reheat well so I stuck with what I could eat. The starter size of the popular honey bbq buttered shrimp. It was near what I might have for dinner at home. 5 large shrimp, not overcooked thank you, nice sauce, very nice green onion relish, personally the cheddar chips were a good idea that didn't work well but didn't detract from the dish for me. I see why it's popular. Meanwhile she was eating the best fried green tomatoes she'd had in years, maybe ever. Then she had the pecan crusted crab cake. Presented really well and satisfying but slightly fishy. My favorite was the side dish I ordered. I know grits aficionados are rare but I love them. I've had them and cooked them many ways over 50 or so years. I'd never thought of horseradish and gouda so I had to try. Amazing. You know what it is but at the same time they are so perfectly balanced and with creamy grits are a new flavor all it's own. Menu marked it hot but i cant imagine why so don't let that scare you. Then we split a complimentary b-day beignet. Freshly made and nice. Banana Foster was quite satisfying and her peach cobbler was interesting and big. Coffee of course and finish up with absinthe of which they have a selection, not something I see everywhere. Nice finish to the meal. Let's start with the bad first, it's a little cold in there. Ok now let's get on with it. I honestly don't even know where to start. The service is excellent. As soon as you walk through the door you're greeted by a wonderful set of hostesses who give off amazing energy and are so polite. The service staff are amazing as well, they understand the menu and can tell you all about each item and give wonderful suggestions with the food and drinks. Now the food simply put is orgasmic. Your tastebuds will do a nice dance for you and you'll honestly want more after each bite! The portions are big though so prepay to take some food with you! read more

Food: I received the cast iron cornbread, vegan roasted squash étouffée, a side of southern style mac and cheese, and the bananas foster bread pudding. The cast iron cornbread was very delicious and tasted very southern and nostalgic. The butters it came with were cinnamon honey butter and a sour cream and chive like butter. The cinnamon honey butter was okay, not really sweet but subtle. The sour cream and chive like butter (called lagniappe on the menu) was very delicious. Cornbread: 8/10. The vegan roasted squash étouffée was amazing and didn't disappoint. All of the veggies in it complimented it well and it was very spicy and flavorful. Vegan étouffée: 9/10. The mac and cheese....... you guys need to try it. it was my favorite thing I tried. Mac and cheese: 10/10. Lastly, I tried the bread pudding was just alright and I wasn't the biggest fan of it. The bananas and walnuts were a good touch but I don't like raisins in bread pudding and the praline sauce had an extremely strong rum taste which made me feel like I was taking a shot. If you like raisins in your bread pudding or like a boozy praline sauce you may like it. Bread pudding:6.5/10. Side note: I got a taste of the catfish someone in my group ordered and it was very good. The servings for everything I received were good considering the price. Overall: 8.6/10. Service: Our waiter was very attentive and an expert of everything on the menu. Our food came at in a timely manner. This restaurants offers valet as well. Ambiance: There was a cozy vibe to this restaurant. It was dimly lit, a fireplace, candle lights at each table, a wine glass display, and a cabin like feel. Had such a nice meal here with my family. Really tasty Cajun-Creole fare that you wouldn't expect passing by this place, which gives very much ski lodge vibes. I had the hickory BBQ shrimp which was served in a tangy-sweet sauce with fried cheddar crisps and the garlic mashed potatoes as a side. I found myself wanting more and more of that sauce, just yum. For dessert we had the beignets, because when in Rome. Fluffy, fresh and powdered to perfection. The flavor was fine, but the Hunt For Red Fish didn't find more than 2 - 3 ounces. I cook fish a lot so I know how much was on the plate. That was extremely disappointing, especially when there was a plate of ribs a la Fred Flintstone sitting across from me. The dessert was good, but unremarkable. Service was poor. We weren't offered a second drink. The entrees came and they rushed off before I could even ask. And being we were the last table on a Sunday night it was clear they were more interested in closing up. I don't think 2 hours from entering a restaurant to leaving the parking lot is out of line when the tab ran to $50+ per person. read more

It takes a lot to get me to drive 40 miles for dinner, but the hope of first-class Cajun-style cuisine did it. And it was worth the drive! Reasonably priced entrees and sides, all Very well-prepared. I had bluefish with crayfish etoufee on top, my wife had Cajun fried chicken with mash on the side. We split apps off pan cornbread (a must) fried green tomatoes - the best I ever had - and cheese grits. The dirty rice was nothing special, but everything else was perfect . They serve a bunch of house cocktails and beers on tap. I had an ale that was a perfect complement to the spicy - but not crazy -hot food. The new restaurant (post fire) is swanky, with wonderful service, from the free valet parking to the dessert . So yeah, you'll burn a gallon or two of gas driving down to Homewood, but it just gives you more time to reflect on what a nice dining experience you had. read more

Long post alert. I have reviewed this restaurant years ago when they were back in Blue Island. Now in Flossmoor, went here last night after a long day of shopping because it's in my neighborhood. It was warm, cozy, and smelled amazing. The hostess, Maya, was amazing! I met her for all of one minute and she had the right spirit, inviting and polite! Now on to the food/service. We ordered the following entrees: fried chicken, catfish, and the ribeye dinner. Overall the food was very good. The problem was our server. I am a little old school and I prefer a server who looks "restaurant clean" all around. When I met him I felt a little uneasy because he was heavily bearded and all I could think about was that hair falling into my food. But I attempted to be flexible and not address that issue and ask for a different server. Our server gave off this energy that he tolerated us, but didn't care to service us. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to drink so I told him to pick. He delivered the drink and it was good. He didn't check to make sure I liked the drink and in fact, he checked on us when the food was delivered, not after we had a chance to taste the food. I didn't eat all of my steak entre because I wanted to ensure I saved space for dessert so I sat my plate to the side. He didn't read table cues, he never returned to the table. I watched him service his other tables but it felt like he was intentionally ignoring our table. We were getting the vibes that he thought we weren't going to tip. It was so bad, I just asked the manager for to go boxes and the dessert menu. After boxing up our food and patiently waiting for our server to return...my husband got upset. He stated," do you need this dessert?" He was agitated because literally the server never checked in. He had to realize he didn't deliver those boxes, just at what point would he acknowledge our table?!? I then called for the manager and explained our dilemma. The manager offered us a free dessert but we declined. It's not about having free food. We care about the service. The food and the service is a packaged deal. If you have one and not the other, you still end up dissatisfied. I let the manager know that we have class and understand the tipped wages. The service that we received today from our waiter was despicable and not tip worthy. The manager was table-side nice, but I got the feeling that she wasn't going to do or say anything about it to the employee. I then let her know that we are going to tip, but just not him. I asked for her to send the hostess Maya back to the table and had to let her know that we appreciated her service. After showing her the bill, we tipped her more than what the suggested 22% or 25% that was recommended on the bill. I'll give this restaurant another chance, but not too soon. read more

I'd never heard of this place until my friend suggested we go for my birthday. It was a great choice. I thoroughly enjoyed my food. We started out with a drink called Creole Voodoo Zombie. Tasty. I would recommend the pork belly cracklins as an appetizer. It's basically bacon but it was delicious. I had hickory buttered bbq shrimp grits w/ cheese and Jalapeño. My friend had southern fried catfish with dirty rice, sweet potato hash which she switched out for garlic mashed potatoes. The food was sooooo good. We finished it off with bananas Foster Bread Pudding our famous bananas foster bread pudding, served over banana creme brûlée, and finished with praline sauce.
