We tried Marais tonight with friends who had been before. The restaurant is very nice, nice atmosphere and totally surprised to find a restaurant of this type in Dickinson. It was easy to actually talk to one another while dining and able to have a conversation. While they had a nice crowd, tables turned over quickly and it wasn't crowded. So on to the food, it was good enough but quite high, sorry but when you pay the price for a steak I think it should include a potato or salad, not charge an additional $6 for a baked potato. No complaints on the steak, husband said it was good, tender and cooked the way ordered but.... I had the fried shrimp, they were good but nothing exceptional however they did include fries or dirty rice and a small portion of slaw. I'll not say never but don't think we'll return after spending over $90 for 2, not including the tip, maybe for a special occasion but I'm not sure this is where I'd choose to go for a special occasion. It seems Marais has invested a lot in this venture and I hope it continues to be profitable and remain open. read more

We came on a Saturday night and sat at the bar while we waited on our table. It took at least 10 minutes for a bar tender (out of 2) to take our order. The pour was generous so we were fine. After about 30 minutes our buzzer never went off. We checked with the host and somehow we were written on the second page that had "accidentally" been thrown away....! Not a big deal because we were then seated right away and our waitress was awesome! The food and beverages are worth 5 stars. The atmosphere is lovely and the chandeliers are beautiful. The back bar also has a lot of character with the swings- nice touch!!! It's was a very nice place to have dinner and drinks after. I only gave 4 stars because of the wait at the bar and the fact that we would have been seated sooner if the hostess wouldn't have thrown away the paper on accident without seating us. We had our first dinning experience at Marais last night and because so many friends raved about it, we were excited! However , the food was very disappointing. Our Oyster appetizers were overcooked and had to be redone. Then my son's dinner was completely inedible- almost burned rice on plate and dry fish. My scallops were also overdone and charred (not pleasant). I only picked at my food. So, I've been there twice - once on a weekday and once on a Friday. I'd rate it four stars on the weekday and one star on the Friday, for a combined rating of two stars. Here's the skinny... First of all, the food was great both times. An interesting menu, especially for Galveston County. We've tried the Baseball Sirloin, Gumbo, the Shrimp Menage a Trois and the Seafood Grits. All were excellent. The prices are a bit high -- not out of line with what you'd expect for a nice restaraunt but high for the area. The menu could stand a little expansion - for example, an appitizer-sized dinner salad would be nice as would a smaller order of grilled or fried shrimp or oysters. One interesting thing was their liquor selection. They have a nice selection of single batch and offbeat bourbons and scotch whiskeys but they don't carry the more popular brands. For example, no Woodford Reserve or Glenlivet. The problem on the Friday night we dined there was the service. Frankly, being a new restaraunt, they are not ready for weekend crowds. I won't go into all the details but, basically, everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Even getting the manager to intervene (several times) didn't help. The problems were deeper than just our server; they were systematic. (The service during our weekday meal, when they weren't crowded, was fine. Not special, but acceptable.) I may go back on a weekday in the near future but it will be several months, after they've had time to get their act together, before I'll be back on a weekend. read more

UPDATED: This establishment will ONLY do what's "required by law" and apparently doesn't care or understand how this reflects on them as a business when clearly a law is insufficient and/or being misrepresented to them. The owner is quite rude & only understands how to escalate an already bad situation instead of helping calm a rightfully upset customer when HIS EMPLOYEES can't get themselves on the right track. Keith, You do not have the "facts" correct as my mother would literally never say the words you quote her with. She's much more elegant with words than you could ever be. Yes, she was upset about the parking issue (as well as reservation issue) and was not being calmed even slightly by YOUR rude & condescending tone (I too have witnesses). Had you allowed your managers, who are hopefully trained to deal with these situations, continue to do their job it may not have escalated at all. I can, with 100% certainty, say there was no conversation at our table about the issues during our meal and there was no disruption of any party around us during the meal. The parking issue was brought to the attention of one of your managers after we were done & waiting for the check. They promptly called you over and unfortunately that's when things got worse. You, sir, should not own any type of customer service business as you have no clue what you are doing. Regardless of your continued misrepresentation of the "facts," I will acknowledge I was quite upset myself. I had just spent more than 3 hours in your establishment watching your workers make mistake after mistake and completely ruin what was intended to be a special & celebratory night (hold the waiter we finally got, because he did his best with a bad situation - maybe you should ask him how he did that so easily & put it into practice yourself). I cannot & will not tolerate ANYONE being rude or disrespectful to my family. Ask any one of them (since you apparently know them). I am a humble and kind person typically, but you caught me on a bad night in a bad situation. Which by the way, you all caused. If you have any further comments to make to me, feel free to ask one of my family members for my number as I will not continue it here. Now, let me tell you how that went...first, we showed up 15+ mins early, then we waited, and waited, and waited some more. Reservation was at 7pm, but we were not sat until 8pm. This was due to several issues with scheduling & others being sat at what was told to us to be "our table" (multiple times). We not only were there to celebrate but had a small child & elderly person (*in a wheelchair - remember for later!) in our party. When arriving there was no handicap parking (ONLY 1 SPOT DESIGNATED FOR THEIR LARGE RESTAURANT & IT WAS TAKEN!!!!!), and we had to park in the back 40. After that things went downhill very quickly given the unplanned wait as well as clear confusion on the hostess' part with regards to "our table." Then when it got closer to 8pm it seemed as though things MIGHT get better. HA!!! Yeah right. Once sat our waiter was attentive & took as good care of us that I'd expect from a lesser establishment to be honest. Then, oh then, the OWNER was called to come to our table...that's when things went unfortunately South very quickly. When he was questioned about the LACK of handicap spots he stated, "We meet requirements" essentially and became VERY defensive. He was quite rude to my mother (THE PERSON THE CELEBRATION WAS FOR!) and then continued the escalating conversation with me! When asked if he's ever had a family member or close friend in a wheelchair & if so had to deal with getting them in/out of his establishment he became even more defensive & began insinuating I was in need of having the cops called on me for questioning him. This is the point where my decision to NEVER patron his establishment was made. I sincerely hope none of you will either. Lack of accessibility and the rudeness with which our questions were met, as well as the unnecessary wait we endured are all reasons this place will never host me or any member of my LARGE family going forward. read more

This was our 4th dinner at Marais and we absolutely love it. Our waiter Christopher H was great. He provided great recommendations, was very friendly, kept our glasses full, and delivered everything promptly. He was very personable and friendly. We ordered an appetizer and chose items from the hou restaurant weeks menu. The crab cake appetizer was Christopher's recommendation and was amazing. The duck gumbo was also great- with lots of duck piled on top and several types of sausage inside. Our fish entrees were delicious. It's Sunday about 1:35, my daughter and I wanted to drop in for some crawfish and sunshine on the patio! We stood at the base of the steps in the patio for a bit as 3 employees bustled around not even acknowledging us there. Finally I stopped the gentleman to ask if I could be seated or if I had to go to the entrance to be seated on the patio? He stated it would be best to go to the front so I would be given menus. I crossed through the dining room headed to the hostess area, standing there for another 3 to 4 minutes watching employees bustle around (and the same female waiter from the patio pass by) I headed back through the dining room out to the patio area! I went back outside looking for the same gentlemen to gather assistance, to no avail. No one there! Entering back into the building I stopped to ask the bartender if there was a shift manager available, she replied "right here". To my surprise there was a female swinging in the chair that I presumed was a customer each time I passed by. As I tried to explain my frustration of not being able to be seated and the fact that no one could even acknowledge our presence, she offered to seat us. I declined as I told her it was apparent I was underdressed to be in the establishment. Sorry Keith. As I did enjoy New Year's Eve celebration there, I'll remember to put on my SUNDAY best next time! Great atmosphere and wonderful staff! What a great addition to this part of town. Had a party of 10 so lots of different food at our table. Food: Gumbo was not my favorite Red beans and Rice - mixed reviews. I liked them, but probably wouldn't order. Ceviche was amazing Oysters were good Salmon was awesome Scallops were also amazing Mac and cheese was pretty darn good Friends got the fried platter and they put crab cakes on her plate (was not on menu) and she's allergic to crabs ... but she discovered it before she ate them so no issues. This restaurant has great food and atmosphere. Service was good and our waitress was excellent. I had the shrimp trio with pecan crusted, coconut and traditionally fried shrimp. I wanted the blackened red snapper but they were out due to its apparent popularity. The swings at the bar and outside on the deck add a nice element to dining outside. Started out at the lower deck in the plank bar sipping on a beer while waiting on our table. After dinner our party played corn-hole and we stayed at least three hours. The owners have put together an awesome restaurant. Definitely will make dining here a habit. read more

I was so excited to come here for my anniversary. Reviews totally upped my excitement too, but it couldn't have been more of a disappointment. My husband made a reservation days in advance only to get there and be put on a list with a 25 minute wait and our reservation totally ignored. We then went to the bar inside to the right where we were ignored and not even greeted let alone helped for roughly 18 minutes. Once we were finally able to order and get our drinks our table was ready. Our service at the table matched the service at the bar and was terrible. We were given zero recommendation zero specials told. Zero help at all. And honestly zero attentiveness. We would have ordered more if our waiter would have come by and asked. But he didn't. We went there tonight on a whim because it was my daughter's birthday. It was really nice! The food was good, the drinks were good, the view was awesome. We sat on the patio by the water. It was beautiful. And when it got dark all their little patio lights gave a festive romantic feel. So I called to see if they had any vegan options and the hostess who answered the phone was so rude - after telling me they had chicken (ummmm not vegan) she said "look I'm not the chef". I then asked to talk to the manager and he said the chef would make me something. Well the only thing they could do was a couple side dishes (literally). STRIKE 3... Decided to give this place another chance Thursday April 26th. Wanting to enjoy some crawfish and watch the NFL draft, we went to the Plank Bar. It was practically deserted but it still took a while to get waited on. We ordered drinks, crawfish and oysters, easy right ? It took almost 10 minutes to get one of the cocktails and the crawfish were of the extra small variety, most less than 1 inch ( yes, we measured). There were no corn or potatoes with them as was pictured on the website photos. The oysters were also a disaster... very small and 3 of the six had been dislodged from the shell and were laying on the tray... pitiful presentation ! They essentially tasted like a spoonful of Parmesan cheese. The service was slow And inattentive... we got more help from the busboy than our waitress. The only positive in this and our other two experience was that there were no crowds.. which is understandable considering the terrible service and sub par food. Rumor around town is that this place is failing and has become known as Holly's Folly ! I won't be returning or recommending! read more

I think this establishment is Gorgeous-just breathtaking. However, I will be honest. The food is good, but it is very overpriced for the taste of the food. It looks pretty, but it's just ok. I know most will be angry with my review, but I'm just being honest . It's like craving a snickers bar, and when you finally get one, open it, eat it- you realize it's an expired candy bar and it tastes nothing like what you were craving or expecting. Marais never disappoints! One of our absolute favorite restaurants. If you are looking for an amazing brunch they are it!

The food is good (if not great) however the service is easily the best. Many restaurants in the Clear Lake area have hard working attentive staff but Marais is by far the best of any place I've been to. For example, when we were leaving it started to rain so I went to get the car. When I drove back the waitress was holding an umbrella and helping my wife get the baby into the car.
