We were here Saturday night because one of our new favorite Mexican places, Salsa & Beer (http://www.yelp.com/biz/salsa-and-beer-van-nuys#hrid:6C7yjUDnCwD3SZvRe2JlcA/src:self), was apparently the popular place to be that night (there was a line out the door, 20 minute wait). So, we decided to pick up some dessert first, since Maral's was still open. Little did we know that they were about to close...as soon as we walked in there, we quickly found out that they closed at 7:00pm (it was already 7:00). We did our window-shopping as quickly as possible and decided upon three desserts to try: a mixed fruit tart, a chocolate "snowball", and a piece of tiramisu. Mixed fruit tart: Yum! Almost on par with Viktor Benes Bakery @ Gelson's! Chocolate "snowball": good, but not my favorite of the 3. This one got the bronze medal in its age group. Tiramisu: runner-up for sure. A close second place behind the fruit tart! At the end of the day, when we're ever at Salsa & Beer again, I'll pop in if I need a dessert fix. I am a big fan of this simple small pastry! It is in a small shopping center, and there is always parking. You must call to see when they have croissant with za3tar (thyme)! Absolute favorite and the best I have ever tasted even in Lebanon! Not that there are many pastries who make that locally... just a handful. So back to the croissant. I believe they make those on Thurs- Sat... but if you call and place an order of certain quantity they will make it. The chocolate croissant is also a 5-star! Every middle-eastern item Maral's Pastry makes is DELISH-ousness to the maxmimum! Kataif, Yes. Knafeh, yes. Ashta, yes. Karabeej, yes please! The little coconut macaroons (they have 4 kinds) are fresh and they melt in your mouth! They also have some imported confections- worth trying! I don't like the lady who sells the cake. I felt uncomfortable to spend time selecting or to ask what kind of cake or pasty is that etc. The cake place should be more friendly vibe. read more

It was a custard cake with strawberries and frosting, very tasty. The pastries are as ugly and stale as the owner's attitude, or at least I think she was the owner. She was so rude and unfriendly. Any question I asked her was responded with a smartass reply, which should have been my red flag to just leave and not buy anything. You can smell the cakes and cookies two stores before! Very friendly lady that helped me pick my selection. There are plenty of parking available so drive up to the store and park there. Their selection is fairly big and there are different types to choose from. I wasn't sure about their stuff so I just got 8 pieces of different cakes. I wish I would've gotten 18 instead! Went in today after having a craving for "cake"... Ended up only getting cookies although their cakes and pastries Looked very good. I'll also have to agree with a previous reviewer regarding the service, very stale and plain. Not at all friendly. It was a woman that served my niece and I and I didn't get a friendly feeling from her at all. The place was probably the least busy (us being the Only customers in the place) in the entire little shopping center. I went in with the intention to buy cake, but could only get myself to try the cookies after the service we received. Cookies are priced at $8 per pound, so that's what I got. What I found interesting is that I asked her to pick her most popular cookies and make the pound assorted as it was our first time there and she did just that, but then when weighing the cookies to "mark" the price, she ended up having to take out THREE cookies. Why this is weird to me is because 1. Do you not sell enough pounds of cookies to know about how may it takes to make a pound? 2. Being that it was our first time there, could you not have said the three were "free" for it being the first time? I mean, she literally was taking a cookie out at a time to make the scale match one pound..... And then placing the cookies on top of the counter (so good luck to the next customer) My whole experience, although short, was very unpleasant. The stars are only there because the items Looked good and most of the cookies were decent in taste. I wasn't a big fan of the date cookies. Anyway, I'm almost upset that I took the time to drive to this place, I'll take the extra "$" on an establishment next time. read more

I love Maral's pastry, not only is she and her staff are super friendly, they always make me feel like family. They remember my usual order of their famous Sahlab, most delicious knefe jebne and their fresh-baked mouth watering cilantro/mushroom boregs. For my parties, Maral's is the place I count on for my cakes and pastries, for Thanksgiving, Maral's is the place I count on to make my Thanksgiving Turkey order, hands down the best turkey meal you will ever have. I've been coming here for the past 2 years and never had a bad experience at all their croissants are the best you even have to call a day before if you want a big quantity cause they only make a few for the day. If you come to this place after 5pm you probably won't see any croissants and if they do have some they're not gonna be the popular ones I personally think that they have a great customer service their prices are not bad at all they have reasonable prices, although I haven't try their fruit cakes so I don't know if the previous comments are true or not but if they are just let them know and I am pretty sure they're going to do something about it... read more

Without a doubt the best decision I made for my kid's birthday cake. Not only did were they open and receptive to my constant changes, but they exceeded all my expectations. They had only a single, blurry, photo that I provided, as an example of what I was looking for, and made artwork out of a birthday cake, using the most beautiful colors of blues, greens, and pinks I have ever seen on a custom cake. I am so beyond pleased, and beyond IMPRESSED, to say the least!!!!!!! They also have the best selection of sweets, one tasting better than the other.....the eclairs, the tarts, the paklavas, and the cheese boregs; are not even half of it. Lets not forget the friendly service, and the huge smile that greets you everytime.....and even remembers your name and previous orders. Their pastries are to die for! They always taste fresh and I don't think I have ate anything at Maral's pastry that I haven't liked. My family has been a Maral's pastry customer for many, many years and we have never been let down by their taste! We got the Thanksgiving Turkey (dessert) made with puffy balls. Terrible quality, the balls are supposed to be stuck together with caramel, they used some clear sugary substance that was getting stuck to your teeth. Very disappointing. Don't buy from that place. read more
