Hands-down the best shrimp burrito I've ever had in my entire life. Actually, it was the best burrito I've ever had in my entire life, PERIOD! Insanely good prices and insanely good food. We had a group of 7 people at the bar across the street, it was early and I walked across the street and said, give me steak tacos for 7 not put together. Charge me whatever? They said ok come back in 20 minutes. I came back and oh my God, awesome! We took it home and everything was awesome! Individually separated, it was like a taco bar. We have gotten their food many times, but this is a first asking for this. They were very accommodating even though this wasn't on their menu. I just ordered food from here through GrubHub. I got a horchata, carne asada burrito, rice and beans. I'm from Chicago, but visiting Milwaukee for the week. I say that to say that I'm a total foodie and have eaten at tons and tons of places in both Milwaukee and Chicago over the years. Mara's Grill has the best guacamole I've ever tasted. It was so perfectly balanced with exactly the right amount of salt, lime, etc. The chips and guac was the highlight for me, though the rest of the food was good too. I ordered a BBQ chicken burrito, and the tortilla itself was amazing though the chicken could've used a pinch of salt. The downside to have everything made fresh is that the food takes a while (it was also cinco de mayo so business was booming, lol). We were really hungry when we got there and had to wait maybe 20-30 minutes before the entrees came out. I was so hungry I forgot to take pictures of everyone else's food and I don't remember what all was ordered though everybody seemed reasonably pleased. read more

Wow. This place is a hidden gem, for sure. A delicious, unexpected gem. We wanted to eat in (yes, you can do it), so we sat at a little table. We were expecting our meal to be served in to-go containers, like so many other Mexican quick-service spots. Nope! A lady came out and set the table for us, and then delivered some chips and salsa! Yes! The food exceeded expectations. Shrimp tacos were made with plump shrimp, a delicious sauce, and fresh pico. Rice and beans were quite good also. The enchiladas were good, smothered with an excellent sauce that is miles away from that red bland stuff that most places use. We even tried dessert...the "apple dumplings" (essentially, an apple chimichanga)...served with a scoop of ice cream and a dusting of cinnamon. BRILLIANT. I am super picky with Mexican food, and I tend to be critical of most Mex restaurants. This little spot just blew me away. Great food, and great people. My friend told me Mara's is a great place, and I should check it out. I went for dinner yesterday. The location is tucked away on the northwest corner of 84th and Lisbon. It is mostly carry out but has a few tables that can seat about 10 to 12 people total. It is definitely not a place to bring a group of people to dine. Mara's also does catering so a group could enjoy it that way. The owners are very friendly and patient. It took us a little bit to figure out what we were going to eat. They answered all of our questions about the food. Once we placed our order, they brought out fresh salsa and chips for us to enjoy while we were waiting. The salsa is in the watery side but it's fresh and tasty. My husband ordered the enchiladas Mole, guacamole and I ordered the Guatemalan chicken. Very generous portions for the price. The guacamole was delicious. Fresh with just the right amount of lime. The enchiladas were stuffed nicely and the mole had a delicious sweetness without being too sweet. The Guatemalan chicken was outstanding. It was like eating something my gramma would make from scratch. I took off one star because the beans and rice were really bland. No spice. I added their salsa and salt to the rice and beans which made them taste good. I would definitely recommend it. I will also definitely be going back. After seeing several comments from neighbors on social media, I thought I would give it a try. My criteria for good and authentic mexican are the rice (fluffy, color, right spices) and the tacos(choice of mexican style or american, spiciness of meat). So of course I ordered a taco lunch plate with rice and beans. I came in about 1:30pm, and I was promptly greeted by the owners David and Mara. I welcomed them to the neighborhood and placed my order. I sat down and less than 5 minutes went by and Mara brought out a glass of water with límon and a basket of chips and homemade salsa. It was fresh and tasty, but not much kick. The lunch plate came out just a few moments later. Both tacos that I ordered came out American style (lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese). I wanted to get a better taste of the meat, so I pushed aside the toppings for a minute. The beef (carnitas) was flavorful and juicy. The chicken was a little watered down, but still good. Next, I took a bite of the rice. It was as good as it looked - fluffy, spiced right and tasty! The restaurant has potential, and I am excited for this addition to our neighborhood! read more

Honestly the cutest duo whipping up some amazing food. We came in with a group of 10 which was a lot for the smaller dining area, but they were so accommodating! She brought some chairs from next door so everyone could sit down. It seemed most people took their food take out and from who I talked to they were all loyal customers. They continuously check on us. I'm pretty sure everyone ordered something different, so the food took a little extra time as one would expect in a small family run place. But they brought out chips and salsa and were so incredible. The food was to die for! Everyone was amazed at the service and food. The dining area is small but they have outdoor seating for warmer days! The menu is a mix of Mexican and Guatemalan, so you will find different food options than at a Mexican restaurant. I ordered a burrito and it was delicious! The food seemed fresh and made to order. The lady behind the counter was very kind and courteous! Oh my goodness the food is excellent! Especially the chicken tamales. My husband and I were sad that we only ordered 3. When we got to the 3rd one he said he would have ordered more if he knew they were that good. I had the Tacos al Pastor and they were very tasty. The complimentary chips and fresh salsa were absolutely delicious and my husband said the enchilada dinner blessed his mouth. The prices are decent for the quality and amount of food you get. I got the chicken mole enchiladas (my go-to dish) and I would totally order it again! The salsa is also something I'm very picky about and theirs is great! It's freshly made which always makes a huge difference. This was our first visit to Mara's and will be back. The owners were lovely and the food was fresh. As other posts have mentioned they are mainly take-out and catering but have a few small tables should you want to dine in. When we want Mexican we usually head into the depths of the city and love to find the little, out of the way, neighborhood-y and as close to authentic as you can find. Sometimes you don't want to make that drive. Mara's offers something to the area that was surely missing. We ordered several items to go ala carte so we could check things out: chicken chimi, chicken enchilada, Asada taco and ground beef tacos (for the record the ground beef weren't mine...) along with rice and beans. We asked for sauces on the side. The food was carefully packaged. The rice and beans were some of the best I've had in Milwaukee. The Asada taco, Chicken Chimi and Chicken Enchilada- were excellent. Particularly, the enchilada. All of the meats, rice and beans were moist, delicious and had multiple notes of flavor. We will definitely return. Updating: we've been here at least 4-5x since the original review. Still amazing service and wonderful food. Tonight we went with the Combo Fajitas, Spinach Enchilada and, of course, a chicken Chimi. As always, fresh salsa and chips while we waited. Everything is so fresh, made per order and delicious. They work so tirelessly to make good food and please their customers. This restaurant has been in my bookmarks for a while, and it's not too far from my job. Don't know why I didn't come sooner. Came for lunch because I had a taste for some taco's or chimichanga's. Low and behold, two chimichangas with rice and beans were part of the lunch special. I ordered one beef and one chicken. Fried to perfection with fresh ingredients. My personal favorite was the chicken because the flavor was immaculate. Fresh, robust, crisp, and gooey. I don't think you can get any better than that. Mara's Grill is the only authentic Guatemalan restaurant in the Milwaukee county area that I know of maybe Wisconsin. Since my first experience I've been back a few times lol. It's sad when they say, oh yeah you are here for the chimichanga's. In all seriousness though, Mara's Grill is fresh and authentic. They have a small seating section inside. This place is fantastic, it is your go-to Mexican hole in the wall but very very clean and friendly. The food is absolutely amazing, tastes fresh and homemade. Menu has some items that are not on your standard Mexican menu too, including some Guatemalan dishes. I asked for breakfast even tho it's not on the menu and they were able to whip me up some of the best huevos rancheros with steak. read more
