I was a bit disappointed with this restaurant because I thought they would have more Mexican food selections. I decided to order cheese and enchiladas which were not on the menu, and those were pretty good because they put onion inside of them as well. The enchiladas came with rice and beans neither of which had much flavor, they were both bland. My husband ordered a chicken enchilada, but instead received a ground beef one, which is totally weird. This place is not very authentic at all. The menu also offered many Guatemalan plates, which I would be interested in trying out but I won't be coming back for Mexican food. The salt saw that was served with the chips was not spicy at all so we asked if there was a spicier version and we got a habenero one which was OK. I would say this place is overpriced for the food we ordered. I think I will keep driving to the southside to fulfill my cravings of authentic Mexican food. This place is a tucked away gem. I've now been here twice and the food is made to order, satisfying, and the couple that owns the place is very friendly. This place is mainly catered to take-out/delivery but there are a few tables on the inside (would fit ~8-10 people) and 2 tables outside. So glad we found this little hidden treasure of a place today. Mara is a sweetheart and her food not only affordable but amazingly tasty. They only have a few tables inside and a couple more outside, and seem to do a lot of take-out and delivery as well. We actually sat inside cause hubby wanted to watch the Brewers game. Quality handmade dinners, everything is fresh and delicious. Molè dishes are homemade and come with a generous amount of hand rolled tortillas. Chimichangas are hand rolled and fried, and packed with meat - chicken and beef are both good! The guacamole is divine because you can really tell that it's made with fresh avocados. Had lunch here for the first time today. Had heard many good things about it and had been wanting to try it. The salsa that came with chips before the meal was a bit too bland for my taste. I prefer a little heat in my salsa. The Chiles Rellenos were very good. I have not had them for many years, so was happy to have them once again. The portion was more than adequate and the owners are very friendly. Prices were also reasonable. My only complaint would be that I would never go in this restaurant again in the cold weather. It was so cold that by the time my food arrived my teeth were literally chattering. I commented that it was cold and the owner said it is colder in the kitchen, which was obvious when the female owner came out with a hat, boots and jacket on. Either they should raise the heat, contact the owner if that is the issue or not serve food to sit down customers in the winter. Ordered take out. First time trying this my boyfriend and I drove by and decided to order out from here. I had a rough day and I definitely didn't want to go in public but I normally can't trust takeout or fast food anymore cuz they mess up the order and then the food tastes like crap so crappy food crappy service makes me go through the ROOF. Only because I care about customer service in any occupation. From grub hub delivering to my food on time everything being right and I got all the small things I asked for plus I appreciated the good amount of napkins I received. Yikes. Ordered take out for lunch. Portion was fine, service was quick. Food, however, was lacking. The pipia tasted... old. Large horchata was about the size of a medium anywhere else. I have driven past this restaurant so many times and had no idea what delicious food awaited me. I only became aware of it because I did a Yelp search for restaurants in the area. It's very tiny so that's probably why they have a lot of to go orders. You order at a window and they bring your order out to you. They offer Mexican, Guatemalan and American fare. I was starving so I didn't want to spend time debating any Guatemalan dishes but I will definitely go back for that. I had carne asada tacos which came with rice and beans. We were offered chips and pico de gallo before our meals came out. The pico was delicious. It was so fresh that it seemed like it was just made. We ordered guacamole and it was good but average. I also ordered horchata. It was a bit heavy on cinnamon but I liked it a lot. The tacos were great because the steak had a fantastic flavor. I made a Yelp account just to review this place. We tried it last week strictly because we had read so many positive reviews online. I stopped in on a Saturday around noon. It wasn't too busy. I was ordering takeouts for 3 people and the gentleman (who I assume is the owner) came out from behind the counter and went over the menu with me. He told me what he thought the best deals were for what I was planning to order. After placing my order the woman (I believe his wife) came out and gave me water, chips, and salsa (just to enjoy while waitng for my takeout order!). Both were extremely polite, friendly, and helpful. The food was hot and ready within ten minutes. SO, SO GOOD. Wow. I have been WAITING for a solid Mexican restaurant in this neighborhood!! Mara's not only delivered on our expectations, but exceeded them as well. Goes to show how well word of mouth and social media work when the product is that good! I have been recommending Mara's to anyone who will listen to me since Saturday. This place is very quaint but has lots of potential. I ordered Chicken Guatemalan Pipian. It was basically a brown sauce with shredded chicken, it came with rice and beans and your choice of flour or corn tortillas. It was great. It need a little more salt possibly but I ate it all as is. I've frequented Mara's on many occasions and have never been disappointed. The owners are very friendly and accommodating.
