The story begins with a different company that recently cleaned and inspected my chimney. The inspector said that the prefabricated firebox, which had some cracked tiles that had been filled over a decade ago by the previous owner, was a "hazard to life and property" and needed to be replaced. He explained that when cracks occur, the tiles must be replaced, but because these tiles were no longer available from the manufacturer, I'd have to replace the entire firebox and flue liner at a cost of thousands of dollars. This inspection report did not add up. A few years ago, the same company had cleaned and inspected that fireplace, and the same filled cracks had been present then (as I mentioned, the previous owner had filled those cracks), but in that inspection, I was told everything was fine. In fact, I had had several inspections by different companies over the past 13 years, and every inspection gave the fireplace a clean bill of health with nobody ever saying a word about the intact but cracked tiles being a safety hazard. That made me wonder why I now was being told that the tiles were a "hazard to life and property." Wanting to get a second opinion about something so important, and prepared to spend thousands of dollars if, in fact, the chimney was dangerous, I called Marblehead Chimney, which has great reviews. I didn't tell the inspector from Marblehead Chimney about the previous inspections or say anything one way or another to influence him--I just left him alone to do his job. The cracks that were supposedly a "hazard to life and property" were obvious to see even to the untrained eye so he wouldn't need me to call attention to them. To my relief, he told me everything was fine. His report said, "slight cracking in fire box, this is what they [the tiles] are designed to do, take heat and protect [the] steel box. Suitable for use." He explained that it would have been better if the previous owner had left the cracks in the tiles unfilled because the filling doesn't expand and contract at the same rate as the tiles so it creates more stress on the tiles, but there was no danger from these intact tiles and they were serving their purpose of moderating the heat that reaches the steel box behind the tiles. He also explained, as no other inspector ever had to me, that in shorter fireboxes like this one, I should not use more than two or three logs at a time. He pointed out, without naming names and without any prompting from me, that I should be careful of chimney sweep companies that use scare tactics to push unnecessary repairs, and he observed that in Massachusetts, chimney sweeps are not licensed so they can use unscrupulous tactics. I had hired one of the other supposed chimney professionals previously when I had chimney trouble. The fix seemed to have worked at the time, but it didn't last. The problem reappeared not long after. A neighbor who had only good things to say about Marblehead Chimney gave me their number. David and his crew were great. With winter approaching, before using my fireplace, I scheduled Marblehead to performa an inspection and if needed, a sweep. The owner arrived on time, was very professional and pleasant. He quickly alerted me of a few issues that need repair before I can use the fireplace. He took a bit of time to show me the issues, explain the why it is a problem and what is the ideal condition I would want. David was the PERFECT contractor for my chimney issues. He's easy to communicate with, very friendly, and was GREAT about responding on email to questions and scheduling concerns. He solved our issue which had to do with moisture leaking through the chimney into one of the walls of the house, and he ended up installing a chimney cap, replacing the flashing, and waterproofing the brick, all for less than I was expecting. The best thing I can say about this company is that they had a chance to over-quote me and sell me a more expensive solution to the problem, but they didn't do that. David was honest and told me that I didn't need to add a new flue to my hot water heater, which would have been involved and costly. He gave me the low end option which turned out to solve the issue perfectly, and he also was able to come do the work during the busiest chimney season (early Winter). Start to finish, a great experience with Marblehead Chimney. I called and left a message on their voicemail and Dave called back quickly to schedule a date for a cleaning. He took time to answer my questions and chat a bit - I never felt rushed off the phone throughout the whole conversation. They were booking 10-12 weeks out, which especially after talking with Dave, I took as a good sign, they must be in demand. The day of the cleaning the gents showed up clean and organized. (It's been a few days, but I'm 99% sure it was Steve and Travis - apologies if I've forgotten your names!). Here's where they really shined. We have white wall-to-wall carpeting and a white couch that sits 5 feet from the fireplace. They didn't blink an eye and carefully used drop cloths to cover the floor and used their vacuum to vacuum *the air* around the fireplace to make sure nothing spread into the room. Total Pros. I apologized that I had left some logs that didn't burn through in the fireplace - not a problem there either. They carefully removed them, wrapped them in a tarp to protect the floor and then, once everything was clean, put them back in. This fireplace probably wasn't even this clean when they installed it. They carefully rolled up the drop cloth as they backed out of the house and I don't think they touched our floor once. Pleasant conversation, education and professionalism from greeting to farewell. I hope Yelp doesn't cap the number of five star reviews any one company or organization can get, if they do, David from Marblehead Chimney has to be getting close. There's a reason why Marblehead Chimney has nothing but five star reviews: because he's the best... As soon as you contact Marblehead Chimney, David responds back promptly and gets you scheduled. He gave us a time window on that day and not only did he show up on time, he called ahead and asked us if it would be okay if he showed up early. When he arrived at our house I was surprised by the number of drop cloths he had and one of the reasons was because he spread out drop cloths all the way from our front door to his work space in front of the fireplace. HIS BOOTS NEVER EVEN TOUCHED OUR FLOOR! Who's professionalism in this day age still goes so far that they do something like that??? Answer: David from Marblehead Chimney; this guy's a pro! His scope of knowledge about fireplaces completely blew my mind. I thought I knew a thing or two about fireplaces but after speaking with Dave for about fifteen minutes or I was shocked by how much I learned. I would like to say that he did a great job at sweeping my chimney but I can't. The reason: he did a full inspection of my chimney and determined that it didn't need to be swept. A little bit of background- my wife and I had just purchased our house, knew nothing about the fireplace or the condition of chimney and figured that it desperately needed a sweep. I told David that ahead of time. Any service person out there who is fairly honest might hear that and perform the service as requested and do a fairly diligent job and charge me accordingly, even though it might not have desperately needed a cleaning. Not Marblehead Chimney sweep. This leads into the last reason that I would recommend Marblehead Chimney sweep. HONESTY... Even if David had gone ahead and swept my chimney when it may or may not have needed a sweep, I still would have been impressed. But he went into great detail about my chimney, it's quirks, structure, condition, etc. and explained to me why it didn't even need a sweep. You just don't get that kind of service anymore... unless you call Marblehead Chimney! The bottom line is that David of Marblehead Chimney is HONEST and gives you a level of service that is truly a lost art and he does all of this at a price that is more than reasonable. We were able to call him and get scheduled pretty quickly as we had him out in the spring but if you wait until fall or winter, my guess is that he has a pretty long line at his door, full of people that will settle for nothing but the best! read more
