My husband and I went to Marcello's last evening for dinner following an appointment. We were seated a little before 7 pm and waited about 10 minutes for the waiter to take our drink order. We placed our full order with the waiter about 15 minutes later and got the appetizer some time after. We noticed the restaurant was full and plates were coming out steadily in small numbers (2 or 3 at a time). Since food is made to order we weren't too concerned about how slow the food was coming to tables. However after numerous assurances our order was "fired" we still did not have our entrees at 8:30. We decided not to wait any longer and asked for the check for the two glasses of wine and the appetizer. The waiter tried to assure us again that our order was "next" but by this time we were not interested in continuing to wait. The floor manager stopped by and asked us about the situation. After a brief back and forth, without any apologies for the delay, he said our check would be coming. The waiter finally brought the check to us and said he took our entrees off and also told us this was "not a fast food restaurant". We were taken back by the cavalier attitude. There was no apology for the experience by the waiter or floor manager. As we were leaving an older gentleman at the hostess stand asked us about our meal and we told him we were not happy. However before we had a chance to explain the floor manager swept in and told him everything was taken care of. Bottom line is Marcello's is not worth the wait. PS the restaurant passes the credit card surcharge along to the customer so be prepared to spend extra for the luxury of using credit. read more

Pizza and entrees are good. If you want to sit down and have a nice meal and experience, go somewhere else. Been coming here sporadically for years since before they made renovations and tried to become fancier than they are cut out for. People are nice but service is slow, ordered drinks and mine came out 20 minutes before my wife's because the runner just never grabbed it. For food, we ordered calamari Italiano (pictured...) and a pizza for apps - asked for them to come out at same time and there was a 30 minute gap between the calamari and the pizza. Calamari was gross, wet breeding sliding off of it, no flavor. Pizza was delicious. Entrees were good. As an added bonus, they charge for ice in liquor drinks but don't tell you beforehand ($4 up charge for two drinks on the rocks) and if you sit in the open air area, you will make lots of new friends with the flies that constantly land on your table and food. read more

I made a reservation for 6 people yesterday March 29, and that was fine we proceeded to order appetizers which were ok but the 2 Veal Scallopine dinners the veal was so tough I had to ask for a steak knife to cut it I didn't say anything because it was busy and I was with family and didn't want to spoil the moment but the icing on the cake was with the veal you could either have potato and vegetable or pasta so instead of a lemon sauce I said I just wanted tomato sauce nothing special like vodka or Alfredo and they charged me 6.00 just for the sauce mind you I brought it to the waiter's attention and he came back and told me that was there policy , ok I paid it 217.00 plus I gave a very 20 percent plus tip but we will never go back again and this was for 4 dinners because the 2 children one had an order of fries and the other a kids pizza and a side of meatballs that's it .The manager was very nice seating us but the food left a lot to be desired for those prices I could have went to Toscano , I don't care about the money I just want good quality food and that veal was like shoe leather I eat all the time and you know when it's not flat they didn't tenderize it enough .Service was ok . read more

Other then the actual building, everything about this place was awful.... I had the mussels Rockefeller, and my date ordered the combo Sliders... The sauce for the mussels tasted like it came out of a can. Apparently my lady friend order never went in the first time, and after reordering, we had to wait 45 minutes for her Sliders to arrive, By that time I was completely done with my meal. Very awkward !!! Our waiter, who was running around like a mad man, never apologized.. service all around sucked. A rare 3 generations dinner that was supposed to be delightful turned into a very bad experience. We ordered a $14 chicken parm for my granddaughter. The server asked her if she would like the sauce on the pasta alone or on the meat as well. The word extra was never mentioned. She didn't inform us that sauce on both comes at an extra charge, nor was it mentioned on the kids' menu. Imagine our surprise when we got the check and saw an extra charge of $7!!! on a $14 kids meal. That's an additional 50% charge. When we expressed our dismay to the manager, he showed us that in the $7 appears in the side orders in a totally different part of the menu. He refused to do the right thing, stating that "the restaurant has to make money, and he also doesn't appreciate my daughter getting upset and complaining in front of other customers." Really??? Well, buddy, this is the last $100 you'll sew from us... Regarding the restaurant itself, honestly? Last week I discovered downtown Bordentown and with that excursion, I discovered how great the pizza is at Marcello's. I met up with a couple of friends who live in the area who suggested we come here for the pizza. I really didn't do much research to know what I was getting myself into but damn, this was some good pizza. We ordered an Old fashion tomato pie and a pie with peppers and onions. Coal fired, fresh mozz, San Marzano tomatoes, pecorino and basil - all the ingredients that can truly make a pizza great if it is done right and Marcello's nails it. I will definitely be adding this pizza to my list of best SJ pizza (I think it's safe to say Bordentown makes the South Jersey cut off) and absolutely plan on returning. What do you get to drink with a pizza so fine. Well, a fine drink. That's what! And while we're talking old fashion pizzas, let's talk old fashion drinks. I ordered mine with Knob Creek and it was very nice - smooth, not too boozy or too sweet. I'm either getting hard at hearing or our waiter was a low talker because I had trouble hearing actual words come out of his mouth, but he was nice nonetheless. First time visit to Bordentown and Marcellos! Great Main Street vibe and the food was fabulous! We went for an early lunch, got there at 11 just after opening. Michael P was an outstanding host, server, made us very comfortable. All COVID restrictions in place, we felt very good about that. I had the antipasto salad and the Bianca pizza. Shared it with my sister and it was plenty for two without leftovers. The pizza was creamy, crust was perfect. Highly recommend. I will definitely come back. One of the worst pizzas I have ever purchased. It was picked up on time but was completely over cooked, extremely dry, and they were insanely light on toppings. I can't remember what the pizza was called, but it had pulled meat and pineapple and both toppings were dry. I had to take a drink after every bite just to wash it down. I really had the best dining experience since quite some time. The appetizers came out quickly with deliciousness. The crispy crust warm baked bread sided with seasoned spiced oil is flavorful and not just for looks. I ordered the calamari as one of the appetizers which some of my party has never tried, I think they love it now too. My entree was the flounder that I found the pasta creamy and the fish creamy, the potion was large, 3 fillets, it was light and flavorful. For dessert a White Russian, un- stirred While other's chocolate cakes and cheese cakes. This all took place over a three hour plus period of constant and polite service from the staff. This may be premature 4 staring but this lunch visit earned it. With several very nice choices in Bordentown I suggested the only one I hadn't tried yet. Ever the Italian food fan, Trish gladly seconded the motion. We walked into some construction going on, it seems as if this has been ongoing for quite some time now, everyone was being seated in the "outdoor" bar area, which is now covered with a removable glass ceiling. The bar is kind of nice, I liked the hanging retro light bulbs. There are many choices on the menu, including sandwiches, pizza, pasta and entrees. Neither of us have had a calzone in ages so we decided to share a large($16) and each ordered soup or salad to go with it. Her Caesar salad looked standard but was very tasty with the addition of seasoned croutons. My bean soup was a good version of this staple, I would get it again. A note on the house bread is in order, this is some of the best restaurant bread around, it is slightly sour and doughy on the inside and perfectly crusty and crunchy on the outside. It is available for sale and I was very tempted to take some home. To make a good thing even better they serve it with their neighbor shop's excellent olive oil (Blue Moon) on a spiced plate. Now for the main event. The calzone was incredible, maybe partly because of the size, it probably could have fed at least 3 adults. But ingredients were simple and if perfect proportions, every part of the crust was cooked just right. And instead of a little container of sauce, here you get a soup bowls worth of thick and tangy goodness. If this is the sauce they use on pies count me in on a return visit. The menu lists an offer for signing up to receive their text specials. It's 10% off 1 entree which they kindly applied toward our humongous zone, and also a free cannoli. That turned out to be ok, but free stuff tastes good to me. I'm now dying to try a pizza here, and Trish is thinking about a pasta choice. I'll update when we return. read more

We only went for lunch but if it's a glimpse into their main entrees, I'm definitely a fan and would like to go back! I love the store front and Christmas decor as we walked in. I started with a Caesar salad. It looked just decent but was actually really good - nice and cold & crisp, not too rich of a dressing and seasoned croutons. Vince and I shared a HUUUUGE calzone that was QUITE delicious! Filled to the brim with mozzarella and ricotta. There was a nice bowl of sauce that came with it for dipping. We really loved Marcello's our first time and even though our second visit was less than stellar, we decided to give them another chance. We're so glad we did. Our last visit must have been an uncharacteristic "off" night because this visit was superb! T.J. greeted us warmly at the door (in Italian no less). We were very impressed with the warmth with which we were welcomed. We immediately felt at home like we did our first time. Although we would have loved to sit on the patio, it was just too humid for us. So, we were seated in the very cool and cozy dining room. Michael was our server and he was absolutely perfect! Our drinks and their delicious bread and olive oil were brought to our table quickly. All evening he seemed to be reading our minds; magically he would appear when we needed something. We started with the Piatta Rustica antipasti which was a nice sampling of Italian meats, cheeses and olives with artichoke and roasted red peppers as an accompaniment. My husband had the Veal Marsala which he described as the perfect Marsala. Tender veal scallops in a light, velvety Marsala sauce over al dente pasta. I had the special Stuffed Meatloaf. Two thick slices of meatloaf stuffed with ricotta cheese, bacon, carrots and celery. You would think that to be an odd combination but I can tell you it's a blissful combination of savory taste, smooth texture and a little bit of crunch. It was spectacular served over a dollop of ricotta and plump risotto which was al dente like the pasta. We completed our meals with fresh brewed coffee, Crème Brulee and Coconut Flan. Both desserts were light, creamy and flavorful. Had we not eaten so much of their bread (which is so amazing) we may have ordered a second dessert. All desserts are made by the chef and you can readily tell. Jim, the general manager visited us twice to make sure we were enjoying our meals and service. He was making the rounds to all customers which is sign he cares about the customer experience and their impression of Marcello's. We of course will most definitely be back and hope to see TJ, Michael and Jim during our next visit. They have a weekly Jazz Brunch starting September 30th which we will definitely check out. read more

I ordered the first old fashioned and it came with a huge block of ice and little to no drink in it. For the second old fashioned I asked to not have the ice block and little to no ice. My drink came super packed with ice. Two small sips & my drink was gone. This is typical in Bars that are misleading customers into thinking that they are paying for a proper size drink. I've eaten here a few times and have never been disappointed by the food. However, I recently ate there during a thunderstorm and a few minutes into the downpour the roof/window overhead began to leak on our table, into my bfs drink, and on our appetizer. Since they were busy they had no where else to move us my bf decided just to sit at the other side of the table. We asked for new linens since the table cloth was now all wet and all we got was more napkins. Attended a luncheon at this restaurant following a funeral on 12/28/24. The family paid for an open bar and reserved the restaurant for two hours. Upon arrival we learned guests had to be seated to get a drink from a waitress rather than having direct bar service- not what we anticipated and quite annoying. Additionally, the family paid for either a tossed or Caesar salad with each order. There was no Caesar salad, and when brought to the waitresses attention she said she would tell the manager. No manager appeared, hence no Caesar salad. The food portions were almost laughable (chicken, salmon) and looked like appetizers. The family had to pay a significant cost for a minimum number of guests, regardless if that number of guests actually appeared and had lunch-the family overestimated the number, a financial benefit to the restaurant. One positive note is the restaurant served good bread. Terrible experience considering what was charged to the family for really good bread. read more

We returned to Marcello's again. This time we ate there instead of getting food for pickup. Our server, Melanie, was very friendly and helpful. The red sangria is very good. The caprese pizza is also very good. My boyfriend thought there were too many tomatoes, but I thought it was fine as it was. Depends on your personal preference, but we both thought the pizza was good as usual. We ordered a few appetizers. The bruschetta is good and not soggy. The fried calamari is thin and not chewy; very good. We would definitely get the calamari again. Eggplant Napoleon was good also, but we probably wouldn't order this one again. Stopped in recently for a light snack and an adult beverage. We have never been to Marcello's so the outside bar area was a welcome surprise. I seem to remember this being a plain. open area in the past. They have done a wonderful job of turning this into a year round venue with sliding roof panels. The breeze making its way through the area was quite welcome. Beer and wine selections were plentiful but the selection of draft beers needs a little attention. Maybe a couple of additional craft beers would be a good thing. We selected the Italian Calamari with an aioli dip. Our first mistake was not asking for the calamari to be crispy. In addition, they completely forgot the aioli and sent out some jury rigged concoction (I hope this was not the correct item) which was mostly very thin olive oil. Our second mistake was in not bringing the problem to their attention. The dinner menu looks interesting and worth a return trip. read more

This is a great find in Bordentown. been here twice in a relatively short time span. Two recos, arrive on the earlier side so as to get a table with little to now waiting time. Second, if like us and you enjoy hearing each other in conversation, then ask to sit in the dining room off the bar; bar area is very loud. Both times our servers were top draw. I'm big on ordering specials as a real test of the kitchen staffs culinary creativity and of course to ensure the freshness of ingredients. First time I tried the grilled octopus, was lovely but not the best I've had (a recent biz trip to Germany is where I had the best most incredible octopus dish at an Italian restaurant). No matter, it was a nice and well prepared appetizer. Second time had the grilled watermelon salad, odd having hot grilled watermark low in a green salad, but it worked. Was refreshing. Had a wonderful veal dish special and that two was just so fresh and enjoyable. Other than the odd choice of old school Italian music, as this is a very hip and fun place to dine.
