no other reason not to have been here for maybe 10 years than that i already have a place or two…read morefor random ho-hum italian on this side of the bridge, which i cross to the city when it's for more serious. reasonable enough reason because that's about the way of things for almost all restaurants... or anything else. marin with all its self-congratulation and "inclusion" is just another suburbia this was a someone's special birthday and deserved better but i waited too long to get reservations in the city. no problem locally but if last minute reservations for 7 pm Friday are too easy it's like the old joke about not wanting to belong to a club that lets you join it. i remembered il davide was positive, so decided to do a return engagement and was able to confirm a table. this was fortunate because there was a line waiting to get in when we arrived. oddly the guy at the entrance seemed almost apologetic when he seated us in a quiet corner, which is exactly what i had asked for. very cordial, this guy at the entrance. i'm picky about location and the perfect table is in the area at the back under the big mirror, no kitchen noise, away from the midroom waitering, nice mixture of light from the table and the large front windows. didn't have my name on it but was what i asked for and as i said, there was a line. i'm not really very critical about food, or i guess actually i am. but there are a few checkpoints that have to be passed, sauteed spinaci all'italiana being a big one. basically don't overheat the garlic, let the last cooking of the spinach be done after plating it, and don't wait around to do this as spinach dewaters fast if actively heated too long. what i'm about to say next may sound... discriminate but if so that's because it is. given how many italian restaurants in california, there aren't enough italian cooks here. in my misguided and often wrong opinion, there is more "italian" to italian restaurants on the east coast given its proximity to europe, and why certain simple italian dishes are better in, say, new york than here. il davide was quite good overall and having passed my little spinach audition, the rest of the meal went equally well. the salads here might be large enough for a meal, next time that might be what i'd have... along with a bottle of their oldest barbaresco. seafood risotto if i'm hungry would be a good repeat.

Juan S. was our server for the night. Very knowable about the menu and the dishes. We started with a classic Caesar salad that we shared. It was plenty enough for us. I ordered the Petrale Sole special and my husband had the Pollo Pomodoro with vodka tomato sauce. Both were excellent choices. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, as were the mixed veggies. My husband loved the pasta as well. For 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine, 1 Caesar salad, 1 bruschetta and a cannoli for later, our bill was $152, before tip. Well worth it.

After we were finally seated and put in our order for drinks, appetizers and main dishes, we waited quite a long time to get our food served. Quality-- not sure if we ordered the wrong things or went in on an off night, but for some reason everything we ordered was underwhelming and lackluster, from the: -drinks (cucumber mojito and strawberry balsamic mocktails) -bruschetta was average -meatballs were sort of flavorless -spinach ravioli with pesto was bland -parpadelle was also bland and portion was oddly small Overall, the food and service was unsatisfactory for the price we paid for the bill. We were excited to come here to celebrate our anniversary and left the restaurant feeling super unfulfilled with our meals. Safe to say we won't be coming back to this establishment, nor will we be suggesting this restaurant to friends and family.

The eatery has inside and outside dining with the inner dining smaller than the outside area. The extended dining area has both heat and covers available. Street parking is available so be warned but the this task is worth your effort. We chose to dine outside for the inner area was at capacity... a good sign. The customer service was outstanding beyond measure. We never saw our cups empty and at the end of our meal when we were selecting desserts, they packaged our leftovers. This gesture had never been performed in all of my experiences... bravo. The food was not simply made and put on our dishes but was created with the upmost heart. Our meals were outstanding and the desserts... the literally best we ever had to consume. If you want a great Family Italian meal, then go to Fairfax, California and seek out the Sorella Caffe. It reminds us of one of those old hometown Italian restaurants where everything feels authentic, welcoming, and comfortable. The food and service were amazing from start to finish. Heather was a fantastic waitress and took the time to walk us through the menu and explain everything. We originally stopped in for drinks and appetizers, but once again it turned into one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time. A special shoutout to Soyara, the owner, who came by our table and treated us to tiramisu for dessert. Honestly, it was probably the best tiramisu I've ever had. If you're driving through or visiting Fairfax, California, this place is a must-stop. Great food, great people, and an atmosphere that keeps bringing us back. Way to go, Soyara and team!

Entering through the back, I passed a fully stocked bar and chose a table in the adjoining dining room. It is spacious and comfortably arranged--no sitting elbow-to-elbow with strangers here! The service is exceptionally warm and accommodating. I arrived at 5:30 p.m. for their Wednesday prime rib special, but they were already sold out due to online pre-orders. Luckily, they offered me an end cut. It was the most tender prime rib I've ever tasted--melt-in-your-mouth, soft, full of flavor and absolutely amazing. The clam chowder was just as spectacular. It was rich, creamy, and loaded with large clams and thick bacon instead of being padded out with cheap potato filler. I left full and highly impressed. Even the leftovers I ate for lunch the next day were just as delicious 18 hours later. I will definitely be back. What a great gem hidden in San Rafael!

First, we were…read moregreeted by the owner, who noted my father using a walker and seated us close to the door (and also the fireplace which was nice since it was a rainy day). No sooner did we sit down then we were served water, warm bread, and butter. Nice. The waiter was very attentive, told us about the crab benedict special (dad ordered it), and we ordered drinks and perused the menu. Just by the way the coffee they serve here is really delicious, full-bodied as I like it and of course bottomless. I ordered the open-faced steak sandwich, my wife ordered a salad (no judgement, but WTF?). I was kind of surprised when the waiter asked me how I liked my roast beef cooked - it was a sandwich after all - but I was to be pleasantly surprised when it arrived. It looked like a slab of perfectly cooked prime rib served on a slice of bread, with mashed potatoes, veggies, au jus, and horseradish on the side. Amazing. Perfection on a plate. Dad's benedict was just as impressive, and my wife's salad... it was great, but really honey? A salad HERE? Anyway, I am really looking forward to coming back here to try some of the other indulgences on the menu. Truly a five-star experience.

In retrospect, there was a sign indicating such as well but somehow it didn't register to me! The gal who greeted me at the desk and then seated me seemed a bit rushed--not very personable. There was an accordion player singing songs in Italian, which was a nice, unexpected touch. I'd been here a few times over the years, and my experience of the food was the same as tonight. It's traditional Italian but American-ized cuisine. Very old school. Like it had its heyday at one point, perhaps. Our 4-top table had the scallops, mixed seafood; two of us had the broiled salmon special. The gal who had the scallops twice said she wished they weren't breaded--just olive oil and garlic would have been great. You get a choice of carb of rice, mashed potato, and I chose the baked potato--can't remember the last time I had a baked russet potato. It was a bit overdone, and served with a ramekin of sour cream and chives. Mixed veggies side was thin small pieces of green beans, one small broccoli floret, one slice of carrot, 4 small quarters of zucchini. Bland, as was my slightly-overdone broiled salmon. Could have been worse. I wish I could understand the positive reviews this restaurant gets. Many reviews say the prices are great, but my dish with a Pellegrino and tip was $50. The restaurant's been in business since 1947. Honestly, overall uninspired and a bit tired by today's standards, in my experience.
