I don't know if it's just me, but it seems ordering take out these days are better than dining in. I was not impressed with the quality of the food. I ordered the Shrimp Fra Diavolo. It's shrimp tossed in a spicy marinara sauce with angel hair pasta. Basically marinara sauce with crushed red pepper. It was more like boiled shrimp tossed in marina sauce along with some of the undrained pasta water. I'd give it a 6/10 since the shrimp wasn't overcooked. The house salad was simple, just old soggy lettuce, grape tomatoes and red onions. The garlic knots were a bit on the dry side, which was fine for me since I shouldn't be eating too many carbs. We ordered bottled Michelob Ultras and they might as well been room temperature. The waiter came to our table and just said hello then awkward silence for what felt like several minutes. The service was 8/10 the waiter didn't give his name, but he did refill drinks without asking.

Tuscany is located in Dayton, it is a bit of a drive from Houston but is a hop and a skip for the east side suburbs. It is in a small strip center parking is somewhat adequate. We were greeted and seated right away. Menus and silverware are brought out to you. The menu is very extensive. I went with the Pasta trio which consisted of Lasagna, Manicotti, and Canelloni. My wife and daughter got a Shrimp Tortellini and another Pasta trio which had Ziti. They do bring out some fresh bread with butter and all of us got a salad with a choice of dressing. The Italian and Caesar dressing were both too sweet to fit the flavor of the dressings, they should be savory and not sweet. Tomato Basil Vinagrette was also a choice and my wife indulged in that. Food came out in a timely manner however the plating was a bit small for the trios and you could not tell what you were eating until you actually took a bite. Thought I was dining in the dark for a sec lol. The presentation should allow these distinct Pasta dishes and their shapes be seen and spread out on a platter. It was hard to see due to everything smothered in sauce and melted cheese. The flavor was good on the spinach and ricotta cheese Manicotti, and the Canelloni not only had the standard ground beef but a subtle flavor of Italian sausage and fennel. Overall I was impressed with the Pasta and portioning and would definitely be back to try some Cannolis.

Chef Pina came to our table to make sure everything was up to her very high standards. We had white bean soup, which was phenomenal, the recipe is vegan, only four ingredients according to Chef Pina but tastes so rich and delicious you would think it was based on a hearty bone broth. Crisp Caesar salad lightly dressed, eggplant Parmesan, tender and delicious, and the veal osso bucco, which to me is always a measure of how a less expensive cut of meat can be (and was) transformed into something utterly delectable. A light and creamy panna cotta with a tart mixed berry topping for desert, very delicate and not too sweet. We chose a crisp sparkling Prosecco from the extensive wine list to accompany a truly memorable meal. The restaurant is attractively decorated despite a slightly awkward layout due to the historic nature of the building it is housed in. Prices are in line with the stellar quality of the food, and our service was excellent. Oh yeah, the bread and oil are as good as everyone says. Special occasion or midweek lunch your dining dollars will be very well spent at Trattoria La Vigna.

I made reservations for 9:00 p.m. because some ArtWalks apparently work up hefty appetites in folks and our usual go-to places get filled up. When your're hungry, you don't want to hear about a 30 minute+ wait time. Arriving at the appointed hour, we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. Cordial service and efficiency were on display throughout our meal. Dan and I got the Mediterranean style octopus appetizer and it was stellar. The octopus was tender, the vegetables complementary, and the dressing and seasoning made this a decidedly winning dish. Azar got the zuppa di pesce which is a generous portion of delicious seafood in a flavorful broth. I decided to go vegetarian for my main and opted for the cannelini bean soup. Sounds simple, right? It was anything but - its great depth of flavor and creaminess put it over the top. Highly recommend. Dan, being the salad king, got the house salad and that was the only misstep. It was a bit over dressed and not very interesting. Poor boy. I am not the Salad Queen, so I'm probably not as sympathetic as I should be. My feeling is that you're in an Italian restaurant run by an Italian -- why get a house salad when there are so many other choices? That said, I know he'd counter by saying that their house salad should be on par with everything else. I can't disagree. Bottomline: Trattoria La Vigna is one of the best Italian restaurants on the Island. If you haven't been, make a reservation and prepare to be delighted.

We hadn't had food from Mama Teresa's in quite some time, but last night I saw a Facebook post from them showcasing their crab claws in spicy marinara. I happen to love crab claws and this post reminded me that Mama Teresa's had some good ones. Tonight's dinner from Mama T's: spicy crab claws and shrimp in marinara and a large pizza with extra cheese, bell peppers, and black olives. We're talking about some excellent eats here. Even our car Rudy approved of the shrimp (de-sauced by his mommy, me) and devoured all the pieces that I allowed him to have. Oh, about that sauce -- it's really good! The spice is bold but there's an underlying depth of flavor that indicates someone takes sauce very seriously indeed. I'm a big fan. While I thought the crab might've been a smidge over cooked (they were still quite tasty), the shrimp were perfection. Orange tabby cats agree! The pizza got a thumbs up from my husband who approved of the quality of the ingredients. That said, he wanted a heavier hand with the toppings and a little more tang in the sauce. I enjoyed it, but both of us wanted more rise in the crust and some char. Ours was a pick up order, but next time we'll dine in. Dan noticed that their draft beer selection was better than most, and the wine choices were okay, too. My take away - visit places that you've unintentionally put on the back burner. You'll probably be very pleasantly surprised. Eat and shop locally!!

It feels like we're slowly working our way through every restaurant in the area, but today, we landed at Antonio's Italian Grill and Seafood--a spot my mom first introduced us to, and let me tell you, it's like finding an Italian oasis in the middle of Baytown. Now, if you haven't been here yet, what are you even doing with your life? Their pizzas? Out of this world. But today, I took a leap and ordered the Crab Cake Fiorentina--two perfectly cooked crab cakes, swimming in a lemon cream sauce, tomatoes, and angel hair pasta. I had the asparagus 86'd because, let's face it, no man should risk eating asparagus on the off chance he gets lucky. Not that I'm claiming to be, but one must always be prepared, right? Back to the food--it was so good, I forgot all about my random asparagus panic. And the garlic bread knots? Absolute perfection. They're so fluffy and delicious that I'm pretty sure they're sent straight from heaven. Oh, and Maria? She's a superstar. Every time we come, she treats us like family, which is reason enough to keep coming back. So do yourself a favor and head to Antonio's. Your taste buds will thank you, and maybe, just maybe, you'll get lucky (just avoid the asparagus).
