I have recently moved to the Santa Monica area and I was in the mood to return to a restaurant I have been on 4 or 5 other occasions. Unfortunately this experience was marred by the server exclusively. I will say first off the enchiladas, rice, and beans I ordered were excellent. The views and interior of the restaurant were also as usual stunning, and the value you get for where you are sitting (the end of the world famous Santa Monica pier) is also pretty crazy. This restaurant is generally worth going to, every other time I have been here the servers were not top notch but fairly good, this time I felt like we were being waited on by someone who serves at a Waffle House and really hates working there. Our server first off didn't look like a server, he was wearing jeans, a dirty ball cap, and an old t-shirt. I literally thought he was a random patron walking up to us, when he asked to take our drink orders we asked for more time, he came back about 20 minutes later. We put in our food and drinks with him, a runner brough out our appetizers and when we came back we asked if we could move as the table behind us were talking and laughing very loudly. He literally said "Well where would you like to go?" and motioned to the restaurant, I asked to move to a table with a better view and pointed one out for him so he said "yeah go ahead" and made us move our own appetizers and waters. He then walked away. Not off to a great start. He never came by to ask us how our food was, in fact he left us at our table for an hour without coming by to check on us once, I had to wave him down to ask for some shots of tequila, he then took 20 minutes to get that done, we'd been at the restaurant for 2 hours now due to him not bothering to come to our table hardly at all. Finally I had to wave another server down to bring us our check because he was having more fun talking and laughing at the bar than serving his tables. I left him a 10% tip (which was more than he deserved) and then exited. I am giving this place 3 stars because I know based on past experience it can do so so much better, whoever that server is should honestly not be working with customers, he has no table-side manner and he has no sense of timing when it comes to his guests, he was also fairly rude in general. My husband and I visited Santa Monica Pier about three weeks ago for a date night while we were up in the LA area, and we decided to grab dinner right on the pier. We chose Maria Sol expecting a solid Mexican meal with a great oceanfront vibe but unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations. Let's start with the positives: The atmosphere was nice. The restaurant itself was clean, and being on the pier naturally gives it a great setting. Now... the food and overall experience. My husband ordered the chicken fajitas, and honestly, it felt like a complete ripoff. There was barely any chicken mostly just vegetables and it came with what felt like only one piece of bread. For the price, the portion was extremely disappointing. I ordered the chicken and steak burrito, specifically asking for it not to be wet (and choosing the version that was recommended/popular). That part alone was confusing, and overall, the burrito just didn't stand out. Nothing memorable flavor-wise. We also got the chips and salsa (I believe it's unlimited). The red salsa was actually really good flavorful and well-made but the green one wasn't my favorite. Another thing that really affected the experience was the live entertainment. There was a man singing, and instead of adding to the vibe, it completely killed it. It felt out of place and honestly a bit inappropriate at times. That's something the restaurant should really manage better because it takes away from the dining experience. As for the service, it was just okay. Not rude, but not welcoming or attentive either. The waiters mostly just dropped off the food and that was it no real effort to check in or enhance the experience. Overall: Atmosphere: good Food: (mid and overpriced for what you get) Service: not the best Value: Would I come back? Definitely not. Between the small portions, average food, and lackluster service, it just wasn't worth the money or the time. If you're visiting the pier, I'd recommend exploring other options you can definitely find better value and quality elsewhere. Maria Sol was so good! We visited Santa Monica and decided to walk the pier, and chose this restaurant for the beautiful ocean views and it was definitely the right choice. The service was phenomenal. We ordered the tableside guacamole, and it was incredibly flavorful with just the right mix of ingredients. The chips were super crispy, and the salsa had the perfect amount of spice. I ordered the camarones al mojo de ajo, and it was really good. If you're ever on the pier in Santa Monica, this is a good place to go. The view is amazing if you sit outside, which we did. It's more expensive than the other items on the boardwalk, but worth it to me There were three of us and my wife ordered the Ahi tuna tostadas which she said were amazing. I ordered the Chile Relleno and enchilada plate. My daughter ordered the Carne Asada Wet burrito. It was all really good solid food. Definitely worth it for the ambience and nice cool breeze off the ocean. I recommend to sit outside. We also ordered a couple bloody Mary's, which were very good. My son and I stopped in at Maria Sol while we were visiting the Santa Monica pier. I absolutely love Mexican food, so this was a no brainer. We were seated right away, arriving around 11, and chose a table outside. I loved feeling the sea breeze and seeing the sunshine, it was a perfect day. I enjoyed a mango margaritta that was divine! For lunch I had two cheese enchiladas, rice, and beans. Every bite was very satisfying. We had chips and salsa to share. You do have to pay additional for this Mexican staple. This locations also serves tableside guacamole, I love it, but my son doesn't, so I passed on that this time around. My son had a plate of fajitas. We were able to fully enjoy ourselves while there, and I was able to enjoy some people watching at the same time. The servers were very friendly and attentive. ANGELINA was the cherry on top the cake. She greeted us at the front and took us to our table and made us feel like part of her family. She matched our energy and made our night. Not to mention the FISH TACOS! They are amazing with a perfect amount of crunch with the oozing Baja sauce and extra juicy limes. the rice was done right. I've been to Maria Sol twice now on visits to the Santa Monica pier and overall, the experiences have been pleasant. Given the location- you have to start with the atmosphere. Although they have both indoor and outdoor dining I would definitely recommend outdoor dining for the ocean views alone. They have both a front and back patio and both have amazing views! The service is overall okay. On our last visit we felt a bit as though we were bothering our waiter each time we asked him for something. When the drinks were brought out everybody's drinks aside from mine were brought out. As he was walking away I gently reminded him I ordered an iced tea and he replied back rather hastily that he knows and it's coming. A minute or two later my drink was brought out. We also ordered the bottomless chips and salsa and they were not very attentive on refilling the chips. When we asked our server if we could have more chips as he was walking by he told us to "relax it's coming now". A few minutes later our food came out but no chips....and no server to be seen. Eventually my dad had to go inside and just ask for more. I'm of the opinion that if you order a "bottomless" or unlimited anything they should be frequently checking in to see if you need more of the item. I also feel like telling a customer to "relax" and not fully listening to the request is not the best service. The food is pretty good. Not the best Mexican I've had, nor the worst. The fun part? The gigantic margaritas. They serve them in several sizes and the largest one is HUGE. I suppose I would come back here again as a matter of convenience if frequenting the pier in the future, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back based on the service our last visit. read more

There were so many people on the pier, so we thought Maria Sol would have a long wait, but no, we got seated immediately on their back patio. There were only a handful of groups in the indoor seating area as it was a nice day out. The menu is straightforward with 3 pages of options, focusing on standard Mexican fare like fajitas, tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. Given the location right on the pier, they offer some seafood options as well. One person went with the grilled chicken wet burrito ($20.95), and I split the clam chowder ($16.95) and Mar y Tierra, i.e. surf and turf ($38.95) with my parents as none of us were super hungry. We also got endless chips and salsa for the table for $4. The chips came out first with a red and green salsa. The first batch of chips tasted a bit stale, but the refill order was much better. The clam chowder was good but creamier than than usual. I'm glad we shared it, as I would feel bad drinking the soup all by myself with how big the portion is and how much cream there is in there. We were all looking forward to the Mar y Tierra and was disappointed by the tiny portion. There only a tiny bit of rice, the smallest amount I've ever seen on a Mexican platter, definitely not enough to share. The steak was quite small as well, so we each got a couple bites. The flavor of the shrimp was good but I wish there was more. At least they gave us free refills on the tortilla. At least my friend who got the chicken wet burrito really enjoyed it. This restaurant is at the end of the pier. We sat on the patio where we had a view of the beach and shoreline. It was great minus the pigeons around the tables scrounging for leftovers on the ground. My shrimp tacos were yummy. The shrimp wasn't overcooked like it is often at restaurants. I also enjoyed the salsa. Others in our group seemed to enjoy their meals too. The service here is ok. The food is mediocre. I got chips and guac for starters. They made it fresh at the table but it had zero flavor, no salt. Which was ok, because I added salt at the table. But the ratio of onions/tomatoes to actual avocado was too much. Then came the main entrees. Bland fish tacos with ranch and bbq sauce on it. I've never had bbq sauce put on a fish taco. Our other dish was a carne asada burrito drenched in sauce. Also bland. If you're looking for authentic Mexican cuisine, this isn't it. A couple months ago during a trip to California, myself, my son, and my boyfriend grabbed lunch at Maria Sol. As you can see, the view is immediately 5 stars! Located right at the end of the Santa Monica Pier boardwalk, I can see this place getting busy but we were lucky enough to get a table with no wait. Sitting outside can be a challenge due to the wind, but they have high windows that block a lot of it so it didn't affect us too much. I got the chicken tortilla soup and fish tacos. The chicken tortilla soup was great. The fish tacos left a little to be desired, as there wasn't a ton of flavor going on and it was lukewarm by the time it reached the table. Drink prices are steep, as my boyfriend was charged $28 for a double marg. Not sure if that was correct or if there was miscommunication, but almost $30 for a drink is crazy!
