I normally buy my cakes in San Francisco but trying to support local businesses. I had Maria's cakes before and I figured to just order a cake for my birthday this time around. I came in on Saturday to pick up my cake. They have 2 lines, one for pre order and one for walk ins. Being that it was EMPTY, I felt going straight to the cashier would be ok. Instead I got a snippy response from the guy behind the register letting me know that next time I would come in to go to the "pre order" line. At first I was like HUH? There is no one here, why does it matter? I also can read and understand English, I did see the sign, but again NO ONE WAS THERE. Afterwords it started to settle in. Why was his comment necessary? If I was standing in line of it would have been busy, I understand. But it wasn't. It really boiled my blood that he said that, he must have some big ego to talk to people like that. I ordered a gender reveal cake here for me and my wife. When we went to order, we brought the gender in an envelope and told the person taking our order that we don't know the gender and we don't want to find out until we cut the cake. She was nice and helped us choose a cake that would meet our needs. I reminded her after the order was completed that I would be the one picking up the cake and I do not want it to be revealed what the gender is to me. When I went to go pick up the cake, the cake box was smaller than the cake so we couldn't close it properly to transport it safely. But I did notice pink on the top layer icing and I went back to the guy and asked him to cover it up. Instead of just covering the imperfection on an all white cake, he said you know the color on the inside is blue right? And i told him, no I don't but now the surprise is ruined. After being extra careful for a week to not know what the gender was going to be before the reveal. The person who packed the cake decided to get defensive about the imperfection on the all white cake and say what the color is on the inside. All I asked was to cover the imperfection so the cake is solid white like we ordered and not tell me what the color on the inside was. It was truly disappointing that they would try to argue the imperfection as it was clearly pink on top corner than to cover it with more white icing. Wouldn't recommend getting a gender reveal cake here. Truly ruined a good moment for us by having bad customer service skills. read more

So I ordered a cake for my sons birthday red velvet and when cutting the cake it was soo hard that I couldn't even cut through the cake it was super dry and the bottom was burnt i then call the bakery and they say that I can't have a refund and didn't give me a good reason as to why only that it's policy and sent me a Picture of said policy when they never told me that when i first ordered the cake, its like they didn't believe their costumers and said they talk to other costumers and no one else complained about thier cake which makes no sense as to why that has anything do with my order you can burn 1 cake and not all. They were rude and had the worst costumer service. Ordered two cakes from here for a birthday & graduation on same day. Pick up was at 4pm. One cake was large with a picture on top which turned out good & tasty until the evening. But the other cake (birthday cake), melted within 10 mins of getting home and slid off in the middle while it was on the passenger seat. That wasn't really the problem as it was a decent hot day (around 70-75 degrees). I have never seen a cake slide from half way like that in all my years of celebrations. We called right away to see what they can do and if they would offer a little bit of compensation at least. They said they can redecorate if we brought the cake back, BUT FOR $40 extra. I've been here many times over the last many years, and don't remember ever being disappointed. Amongst their many baked delights, the Tres Leches stands out brightly. The whipped cream frosting, the super moist cake, and the sweet condensed (reduced?) milk make for a great dessert that satiates my sweet tooth every single time. I must however admit that their traditional one (white cake) is better than the chocolates version - but that could be just me. I don't remember every single item I've purchased over the years, but from the last couple of visits, I enjoyed the butterscotch cookie, was a little amused by the fruit tart that used a puff pastry as a base instead of a pie crust, and didn't much care for the cream cheese almond paste pastry. The last confection above turned out to be a savory much to my chagrin as I was looking forward to a marzipan like filling, or a rich sweet almond top. I could barely taste the almond. I've ordered multiple birthday cakes over the years and have loved them all. Lastly, the prices are great for the product you're receiving, though I wouldn't go so far as to consider it gourmet.
