We ordered food from Maria's while we were having beer next door. (The brewery's outdoor space is a bit more enticing than Maria's.) They have a pretty big menu, so we decided to get a variety of things to try. We ordered two tacos and two empanadas. They said they'd bring it out to us even though they normally wouldn't. After waiting a bit, my husband went in to see what the status was and found our tacos just sitting there. And what about the empanadas? There must have been a miscommunication about the order because they were not ready. Everything, once it came out, was pretty ok. I appreciate all the green on the tacos, but the pork really needed more flavor and more sauce. The empanadas were nice and crispy, but the meat was a little goopier than I normally expect. There aren't too many options for places to eat on Shelter Island, and with weird hours for COVID, we were left with even less. I was excited to try Maria's because of great reviews, and we did get a few items we liked but overall I thought it was just ok. You can call your order in for pick up, which will save you a lot of time because they were pretty busy on a Monday night! - Chips and salsa: comes with a huge portion of fresh tortilla chips and a side of guac and pico. I really enjoyed the chips and couldn't stop munching on them - Baja fish taco: HUUGE portion! When I opened the box, I thought it was two tacos, but it was actually just one giant one. The fish portion was pretty big and it comes with avocado and slaw. This was really hard to eat as a taco, so we just ate it with a fork. I'd recommend this taco if you come here! - Campechano taco: mix of chorizo and beef. Super dry :/ didn't really enjoy this one.. Even with all the sauces they give you, it wasn't very satisfying - Al pastor burrito: pretty decent portion as well! Flavors were a little lacking, and the meat was also a bit dry. I've been to Shelter Island a bunch of times now and for some reason, never came in here but better late than never! I had the Mexican omelette and my girlfriend had the huevos rancheros. We both loved our food and thought it was a flavorful and hearty breakfast. The chorizo was way better quality and quantity as the amount they give you at Stars. I stopped here after eating at the Islander since I was still hungry. It is literally next door to the Islander hidden behind another place. This one is as authentic as they come. They had a lot of stuff on the menu but my favorite is the carne asada torta. It was really good. The carne asada had good flavor and wasn't dry. We got there early, within about 10 minutes, but was certainly not in a rush. I went inside to just pay first so we could grab the food and go when it was ready. They told me that I had to wait until the food was ready to pay, which is fine but sort of odd (I was the only person there, so it's not like they needed to help others). I told her that we were right outside, so were they going to let us know when the food is ready? She then rudely asked "how much time did I tell you it'd take?" I wasn't trying to ask for our food immediately or rush them - I came in to just pay them and let them know we'd be waiting outside. We had an amazing lunch at Maria's Kitchen over the Memorial weekend. Taco food-truck owner at one of North Folk wineries we visited recommended this place and he was so right! Maria's is my favorite mexican restaurant anywhere and among my favorite restaurants of any kind. Every time I'm on Shelter Island I make a point to go here, often twice (or more) in one weekend. The restaurant itself is a no-frills counter with some cheap plastic furniture out back, but the building also houses the fairly new Shelter Island Brewery, which serves up extremely creative and surprisingly decent microbrews. You can (read: should) take Maria's to-go and sit at the brewery's long picnic tables while you have a beer with your tacos on a hot summer day -- probably the best example of a successful symbiotic relationship between two unaffiliated small businesses I can think of. They're just perfect for each other. The food itself at Maria's is, quite seriously, as good as any mexican food I've had anywhere in this or any other country, including Mexico. I usually go for the baja fish taco (which is much larger than you'll be expecting) and it never let's me down, with a generous hunk of crispy fish and loads of fun toppings. But the rest of the food is just as delicious -- everything from the burritos to the guacamole to the rice and beans; Maria, who is always working there, has literally never made me anything I wouldn't describe as fantastic. This place focuses on what matters -- making the best Mexican food possible -- and nothing else. And that's exactly how I like it. This ain't no Tex-Mex Bull Sh*t meets Hamptons euro trash, this is an explosion of flavor wrapped in a humble tortilla. Wow, what a hidden gem! This place is inconspicuous. It's not screaming with Spanish pride and I would have easily drive by it if a local hadn't recommended it. Heck, I actually DID drive by it when I first got to the island without even know it existed! But the food here is KILLER!! I mean, who would expect to get such a gastronomic pleasure packaged in a burrito on Shelter Island? It was one of the best burritos I've had, it completely blows Chipotle out of the water, and it's on the same level as MG2K in Patchogue, but less sketchy. (if you know what I'm talking about, you know) They also have the "bowl" option if you want to keep the burrito gluten-free. The burritos are huge, the quesadillas are amazing, the Torta was toasted and looked so good! The Salsa Verde had so much flavor, and the red spicy salsa was packing a nice mild/mid heat bursting with flavor. I am amazed at how I'm the first to review this place. If you Yelpers go check this out, I'm sure you'll follow suit in a slew of 5 star reviews. Seriously folks, if you give this place anything less than 5 stars because your summer road trip to the Yucatan through Guadalajara had better carne, I'm going to come snatch that burrito right out of your entitled little hands! This place is so good, I looked at previous reviews so decided to call for a reservation, I should have looked more at the pictures etc, so when I rang the lady on the phone was like ya come by, took no name for the booking so I was like ok. I rocked up with my wife all dressed up to find a little building with people ordering take out, we were surprised to say the least but there is a little out back with like 5 tables in a little garden. A decent place in terms of food taste itself, BUT Maria's is absolutely terrible at handling busy hours. Multiples times now i've been given 40 minute waits for just a few burritos, and again, multiple times the order has been wrong. Which then results in another 30 minutes at least for an item they forgot. The most recent example - we ordered 4 burritos, 3 with chorizo and one without. We waited 40 minutes and received 3 burritos. She said she did not hear me order the last burrito (probably because she was on the phone while taking our order). We waited another 30 minutes for the last burrito. And then when we got home to eat, none of the burritos had chorizo. Very disappointed and i usually don't leave reviews based on one single order, but at this point it's multiple times things like this have happened. Likely the only Mexican restaurant on shelter island, Maria's is a great addition to the food scene here. As most reviewers stated, you come here to take food outside and get beers from the brewery next door to enjoy on the picnic tables outside. The inside looks like your typical bodega with dry goods for sale on one side and the food counter on the other.
