Was on shelter island for the day and stopped by for an early dinner at the diner. It was pretty empty and took about 40 minutes to get our food, but no complaints as we were on island time. I got the BLT and fries. Also tried the chicken tenders. The eggs Florentine, buffalo chicken wrap, and spicy chicken sandwich were also ordered. No complaints about anything it was all just very mediocre. I wouldn't seek this out again but it's not a bad resort as there aren't many options on the island. read more

It's like you've just stepped onto a movie set. The room is a no-fuss, cafeteria meets diner space. Minimal and clean. And it's obviously the favorite restaurant on the island for the locals. The food is fresh and tasty and simple. And the prices are reasonable. And most importantly, the staff are happy and cheerful. It's an interesting experience and one I'd happily do again. read more

My daughter and I came here with very little expectations. There's not much to choose from in the area in December because everyone is closed. We were really hungry and needed food. Yep yep....we were recommended by the Bike shop closest to the ferry from North Fork. He said it was a mom and pop shop and they have really great comfort food. Definitely a cute spot. Definitely great comfort food. I had the turkey burger w/o cheese, and my beloved avocado of course. Washed that bad boy down with some wine and I was good to go! I decided to stop at the Islander last Friday for a burger. The restaurant was empty and smelled of paint. Apparently that was due to new ownership and some redecorating. I ordered a cheeseburger To Go and asked for it to be cooked med rare. The gal who took my order was very nice and said it came with Fries or Greens. I asked for Greens. I paid my $17.38 and left. Although I thought it was expensive I was anxious for a really juicy burger & salad. Getting home a few minutes later I opened the box to find a Burger (which looked good) but the "greens" were just that... ie. a handful of arugula with no tomatoes, carrots, etc just greens and no dressing! The burger although cooked to my liking was tasteless. The bun had no flavour and the burger the same. I added salt and some catsup but honestly it still had little flavour. In my opinion they need to change the buns and find another supplier for their burger meat. I have to say that I've not eaten here before so I am only writing a review based on their Hamburgers. We were dying for food because the night before we didn't realize there is no food on the island after a certain time. Fyi, the food here takes a long time. It is also a little muggy inside so not sure if they have the ac on full blast. They serve lunch after 10:30am so it isn't like a diner where they serve everything at all times. The eggs benedict was basic but hit the spot. Then again anything would have hit the spot after being food deprived for a day. The french toast wasn't great so I would skip that. They also don't come around to fill up our drinks. This is a 3 star place but with the limited options on the island you may end up here. read more

"Maybe" because there are not too many options on the island. I've been going to this same space from its earliest days as Pat & Steve's. The food was never fabulous but you could have a group eat together or dine solo at the counter. There is nothing wrong with the food today in terms of freshness but it's tasteless and nobody has been taught that "you eat with your eyes before your mouth". I recently had a tuna wrap, which was a REALLY bland tuna salad - just tuna and mayo..... not anything else. I ordered a salad instead of chips and got bagged something that was devoid of anything else.... Just dumped from bag to plate. The balsamic vinegar it is served with is the worst commercial dressing I've had (I used to be in food service so have some experience). The wrap was excessively large (this place over-portions, which to me is as bad as being stingy). The place is devoid of all charm. I'm so sad about this as I have a home in the island and we really need more options. I want to see this place succeed but it needs some help. read more

They also have oat milk for your coffee. And it is cash only but they accept Venmo. This is the best place on Shelter Island. It's effectively the island's diner. The service is great and the food is too! For breakfast, the pancakes, eggs, sausage gravy and biscuits, and egg sandwiches are all great (you can tell we go here a lot!). For lunch, the burgers, club sandwich, and bubba are all great. Another thing: this place is great for kids and is very casual unlike some of the newer places on shelter island. read more

I have to say I enjoyed my lunch here. Ordered a fish sandwich and I have to say the brioche bun was fresh. The fish was good but slightly mushy. Frozen fish perhaps and it was advertised as flounder, but I was slightly disappointed. The tartar sauce was good, but I think thousand island dressing would have been better. However! Don't despair cause the sweet potato fries had the right crunch and let me tell you - that key lime pie made me swear I'd come back just for that! Cool small place. The food handler did not wear gloves nor line the surface with paper before putting my Food down on the counter, which looked dirty. I was with people and avoided saying anything. Wish I did . Took the Sag Harbor ferry to Shelter Island and got a late breakfast at The Islander. We were on our way to the Sylvester Manor Farm and house. The Islander has plenty of parking and a sit yourself vibe. The waitstaff quickly got to us and we got our orders in a normal wait time. We had the breakfast quesadilla and the breakfast burrito. They come with home fries, salsa, and sour cream. Not spicy but they'll give you a run-of-the-mill hot sauce. Overall good place. Others around were getting burgers and they smelled wonderful. TLDR - RUDE SURLY WAITRESS - ZERO STARS. We stopped by on Saturday, September 2nd, while biking. We sat at one of the six picnic tables outside. The waitress helped another table and we flagged her down. She asked if we let them know inside that we were out here and we said no. She said we had to do that first, so my husband went in. We again flagged the waitress down to let her know we were ready to order and were asked if we had ordered drinks yet. We said no and were informed that we could not place our order until we had drinks. She stated that she was very busy and alone and could not take our drink or food order at that moment. Another staff member came out and took our drink and food order. The original waitress came flying over and told us she was not allowed to take our order and on she could. So we placed our order and our waters were delivered and then we waited..... and waited..... and waited...... and waited.....and waited....and waited. My husband went in to ask how much longer and the waitress was extremely rude to him. We decided it was time to go elsewhere and my husband cancelled our order. The waitress was again very surly. And wait, and wait, and wait.... No Apologies. Close to an hour and a half later, we ask, when? There are still seven tables on the patio ahead of you!!! That meant another hour wait. Staff had an attitude of, Too Bad For You. We decided to leave, and were charged for our coffees! We were seated immediately and after about 15 minutes no one had come to take our order which is quite a while. We decided to leave and try out another spot due to the wait. Before getting up from the table the server, in front of the entire outdoor seating area, yelled "I'm the only one working today, if you want to eat you're gonna have to have patience or you can leave." Without responding we stood up from the table... just to hear her yell again, "patience is a virtue" (again in front of the entire restaurant) to which we responded that it is okay and we weren't commenting further, only to hear her yell again "actions speak louder than words". The first thing that strikes you is the bright, colorful atmosphere, very unlike the more muted, atmospheric diners on LI proper, but very friendly service. Understaffed and SLOWWWWW We stopped in for a quick burger on burger night. After a long day of swimming we were hungry!! The waitress was rather curt and didn't take our order even after being asked many times!! Came here last night ( Saturday night in early November. Very casual and comfortable environment. Waitress was friendly and kind. I ordered the wings which were very good. Update: Back from the dead This place blew the fucking DOORS off with their zesty breakfast quesadilla. The waiter asked if i "could even fucking read" but it was clearly because I am illiterate. The cheesy fries melt when they touch your tongue and the lemonade reminds me of when my dad still loved me. The Islander is the kind of place where the waitress calls you doll. Cute, hand painted interiors with modern furnishings. Food is delish, served hot and in large portions. Today Friday 8/28/20 at 10:00 am. Food was mediocre but the service was exceptionally horrible. With outside seating it is expected to encounter some bees, which we did. We walked inside and asked to sit inside because of the bees. To which the waitress rudely replied to us well we have bees in here as well. She was not accommodating us by apologizing and possibly offering to close the doors so the bugs didn't come inside. While we are eating our meal a bee flew into one of our sodas. We asked the bus boy, who was excellent to replace our drink for us. When we received the bill we had notice there was a charge for $4.00. We questioned before we paid the bill what the $4 was for and she then rudely explained, without lifting her head from her phone, that you ordered 2 drinks. We stated that a bee had flown into our cup. She then replied back oh it's just $2 just pay it. Thankfully the bus boy was very accommodating and took care of us. While we were there we noticed that the chefs in the back cooking our food were not wearing face masks and were not wearing gloves. I would not go back to this place nor recommend it to anyone I know because of the horrible experience we encountered today and the uncleanliness of the staff cooking our food. read more

The menu is pretty simple and accessible, and the food that we had was perfectly serviceable. Nothing all that memorable, but no issues to speak of, either. Prices are reasonable but maybe a bit overpriced for what you get, though that seems to be par for the course on Shelter Island. Seems like a good place for a greasy spoon breakfast or brunch. Awful. We ate there a few nights ago and the food was overpriced, poor quality and small portions. We had to ask for items that were included on the menu and not served. The baked potato was ancient and my meatloaf was dry and tasteless. The vegetables were over cooked and old too. I guess that being open is their claim to fame. After 3 days on Shelter Island, we were beginning to think that it wasn't possible to depart a restaurant without dropping at least $80 for the two of us. We wanted something that featured "good eats" rather than "kwee-zeen". You know, your basic diner. Since Shelter Island, in recent years, has become something of an extension of the Hamptons, such places are in short supply. In fact, The Islander is the only one we found, though there may be others. To our surprise and delight The Islander helped to assuage our battered wallets with very decent chow at more-than-reasonable prices. On our first visit, we were greeted by a cheerfully sassy, wisecracking waitress (when the Hillbilly Filly ordered a burger with raw onion she said, "that's fine hon, I ain't gonna be kissin' ya!") who promptly took our orders and brought our fresh-brewed ("I made it myself!") iced tea. HF's burger was, by her account, super tasty and just the right portion and my salad, featuring chick peas, green peppers, onions and greens (titled "The Garden" on the menu) was mighty fine. Our second visit was much the same. I had the same salad, topped with crispy chicken and HF had the chicken sarny. Both hit the spot taste-wise and budget-wise too. The bill came to $22 for two, plus tip. A welcome respite from the other hard-to-avoid too pricey S.I. fare. They're open for dinner too. read more
