We went on a Friday for dinner and it was packed. They don't take reservations. We opted for a seat at the bar and ordered the blackberry margarita which was the special. It was amazing! The 4 stars is for the Margarita's, Happy Hour and ambience. Great outdoor patio seating! The Mexican food is just OK. It's a bit on the bland side. Better Mexican can be found at a couple local taquerias. I tend to favor it for Happy Hour Rita's and appetizers. The complimentary chips and salsa always hit the spot. The Steak quesadilla is a generous portion and flavorful, and their crispy buffalo wings are very good. Add a side salad, which is huge, and you're all set. I was referred to Robinson's for great burritos, but they're not serving on weekends. So, Maria's is right across the street, and because I'm not very familiar with the area, I thought, "I'll just get burritos there." Looked online, saw their menu (no prices), and called to order two burritos with carne asada. When I picked them up, I almost fell over. FIFTY DOLLARS. FIFTY DOLLARS?! FIFTY DOLLARS!! for two burritos!! I cried all the way home! Who charges $50 for two burritos?! Who pays that?! My brother said that my burrito had better give me the best orgasm I've ever had, but it was mediocre at best. Very Americanized. Everything was fresh; nothing gross or anything, but it was nothing special at all. There were very few pieces of beef in it, which apparently was an "upcharge." Idk what the negative reviews are about because this place is GREAT. I had a lovely experience eating here. The ambience is enough for anyone to try this place at least once it is beautiful! I ordered the plate that allowed me two entrees with a side of rice and beans. I chose the quesadilla and enchilada with shredded chicken. PHENOMENAL. The refried beans sat well with my stomach also (most places leave me with a stomach ache) the food was also nice and hot. My boyfriend & mother were also very satisfied with their meals. I do not understand the bad reviews here! I eat here every time I come to town. The complimentary salsa and chips is delicious (I always get a container to take home, and I reside in Southern California, where great salsa is plentiful). I crave their cheese enchiladas with onions and olives (yum, you can order in small batches to-go - or larger with a little notice), the rice is good too. The dinner salad size is generous and comes with homemade salad dressing. In fact, most everything here is made in house. Grass Valley, you have a GEM in this place...it's always clean and has friendly servers. We typically eat at the bar, where the bartenders are very friendly ("hi" Tammy!). read more

Maria's is our favorite Mexican restaurant In the area. Sometimes we stop in for just their chips, salsa and margaritas and sit out on the patio! Portions tend to be large but all the food we have tried has been delicious so far. The California Enchiladas are our current favorite dish. Plus the outdoor patio is dog friendly! read more

I'm giving it 2 starts because the service is good, the food on the other hand is terrible. I have been twice, hoping it was just what I ordered, but no. I went with several people both times and everyone said the food was just gross, and I agree. You can tell that all of the food is frozen and just heated up. I ordered the crab enchiladas, first off, they were sitting in water. So much water that I could spoon it out, there was also mushrooms and a very Italian tasting tomatoes on top of the enchiladas. Our family went to Maria's on 7/24 around 5:30 to celebrate our brother in law & sister's wedding anniversary. We picked the place as we have a friend that typically performs at the venue. Sadly, on this day, it took about 45 min or longer to obtain our food. In addition to the long wait, my husband's order was wrong, so we had to wait an additional 30 min to get his food. By the time his food arrived, we were all finished with dinner. I ordered a combo plate with enchilada and a Chile Relleno. Upon my first bite, I tasted a fishy taste but figured it was the spices. I should have stopped because I had food poisoning since. The reason for my 2 stars is my entire family also complained of food poisoning the next day. Odd thing about Maria's went there Sunday for a Birthday party sat on the patio had a wonderful time food was great service was wonderful!!! Decided to grab a fast bite for dinner Monday night walked in sat down at the bar empty. Bartender said we were her first customers in a hour, she decided to clean the drains as we sat down. Chips came and so did the flies and other bugs out of the drains as she poured bleach and hot water down them. Not very appealing for dinner guests!!!! Our food arrives and the Manager comes over to admire how clean the drains were not how our food was..... very disappointed in the staff and the lack of professional Help!! Tried it again after a several year hiatus. I ordered fish tacos and they were clearly microwaved... the driest fish I have ever tried to eat. When the waitress came back with our bill (the only time she returned besides to bring the food... we were never offered refills or asked how our food was or I would have told her at that time) she asked if I wanted a box for my food, which I had only eaten two bites of. I told her it was inedible as it was so dry, and I didn't want it. She said "oh, sorry" and kept moving, and charged us for it too! The other members of my party were also underwhelmed with their food. It is just super bland and Americanized... nothing "authentic" about this food. We were so hopeful that things had improved, but our group of six won't be back after this visit. If you are looking for fresh, authentic food, try Rico's Cafe right up the street. My sister and I go to Maria's whenever we're in Grass Valley. We went today for lunch and was disappointed with both our lunches. Bland, Bland bland.... no flavor. My sister had a pork super burrito and I had chicken enchiladas with a green sauce. Very sad experience, will not go back! I'm surprised by the lower ratings on Maria's! I love coming here with my friends and family. They have great food, great margaritas, and great atmosphere. Always comfortable in here, it can get a little tight in there when it's busy (to be expected anywhere). I feel that their prices are reasonable. Most importantly great food, you can tell when a restaurant is good by how their salsa and guacamole tastes and here it's great!
