Where to start? My friend recommended this place to us and since we just moved nearby we got take out one night. The price was priced right for the portion and the taste was just right. I would give this place a 2.5 but the food was decent. One afternoon, we decided to dine in for lunch. The host/ess service was not too pleasant. He/she looked bored and tired. There were a couple table in there and there was a "very" small bar to the right-- which was unbelievably out of place. Overall the decor is too much for such a small restaurant... perhaps changing some of the colors. Our waitress was OK -- we had asked for suggestions and she was very blunt with answers. I also work part time as a waitress so I would know how to answer questions without being bias. She was a riot.. not too friendly, just whatever about anything... Went to Maria's last night for dinner. It was our first time there. Although the reviews were mixed, we wanted to see for ourselves. We were hoping for a new "favorite" Italian restaurant, but alas, we continue with our quest. The ambience is quaint and seating is condensed. When we were seated in a booth, there was barely enough room to wiggle in and out. As far as service, our waitress was prompt and courteous and checked on us throughout the evening. Both of us ordered Veal Parmigiana. Some of the reviews we read mentioned food being oily. Our parmigiana was a little oily, but nothing that would generate a bad review from us. But oily AND over cooked definitely warrants a review. The breading on the parmigiana was over cooked and in some areas burnt! I would say this was the worst veal parmigiana that I've ever had! This has been my family go to spot since I was a child!!! I've always had great service and food! I'm actually glad the decor has never changed...its part of the restaurants charm!! I brought my daughter there for the first time tonight and safe to say she loves the pasta and meatballs!! The staff ( as always) was fantastic! They were great with her and super sweet!! This was a treat. For some authentic Boston Italian food this place delivered. I had the seafood lasagna and it was packed with seafood... the ricotta was melty and delicious. The Italian salad was good, the Greek one looked even better. The salad dressing is off the hook. The atmosphere was dark, cozy and true Italian kitsch. I love the Italian murals on the wall. A couple of years ago on Mother's Day, I took my wife to this place on an act of desperation because everywhere else was either booked or had a 2+ hour wait. And since this place was a neighborhood restaurant and that they had no reservations policy, I decided to take a chance since I figured that most times there were cars in the parking lot it couldn't that bad of a place to eat. This is a great restaurant that is best known for their Italian food but they do an excellent job with their seafood as well. I often order their fried scallop plate that comes with fries and either soup or salad. The coating on the scallops is delicious and the scallops are always fresh tasting. I've had their pizza here too which is always great and their Italian dishes are very good as well. The Italian bread that they serve with the entrees is always very tasty and I love the salads that I always get with my meals. The only issue that I have with the place is that their tables are rather small so if you have more than two people in your party it can get a bit cramped and it's hard for the staff to find room to place all of the casseroles, plates and bowls that come with the food orders. But I do love this place and have been coming here almost on a weekly basis for quite a while now. If you're here for the Italian food and are dining with another person you might want to try the veal dinner for two which comes with generous portions of veal, meatballs, stuffed shells, eggplant, ziti, soup, salad and garlic bread. It is a great value and you'll leave the restaurant very full. The restaurant is always kept clean and the servers here are awesome. I highly recommend this place. read more

OK so I get what everyone is saying about the outdated decor. I'm happy to say that I went to today just to get 2 meatball subs and it seemed brighter...thought I was crazy. Came here to celebrate a family members birthday. Ordered some pasta, but the cheese sauce was way too thick. I got full within five minutes of eating. Lots of kids and families in the restaurant, also making it really loud. It was pretty cold inside, too. When we mentioned the birthday girl, every staff member started to sing joyfully, they are all full of great energy and enthusiasm and had no problem helping us with our needs. There is very little space to move around. There is a decent amount but it still feels a bit cluttered inside. Decorations around the restaurant are very cute and go well with the Italian theme. Took a bit of my aunts fish and chips. It was amazing, and I would totally recommend it. Amazing restaurant, and will hopefully be returning. We should have stayed and waited there because when we ordered the food was just okay, but nice portions if you like a lot. You simply cannot get a bad meal at Maria's. I ordered the whole belly clams with French fries and it came with a Greek salad. My sister ordered baked shroud and a baked potato, hers also came with a Greek salad. The salads were yummy, and when our meals came our eyes bulged, each meal was enough for 2 people. The whole belly clams were big and sweet, to die for. The French fries cooked crispy just how I like them. My sisters fish was outstanding. What a wonderful dining experience. During COVID, it's imperative to do takeout, even though, I don't think dining in would have even done this place any justice. The food was hot. That's the only good thing I can say about the meal. The alfredo sauce was separated and tasteless. Yuck. The marinara sauce seemed like it was made specifically to the chef's tastes -meaning, there were some weird flavors going on in there that I typically wouldn't expect from a spaghetti dish. The shrimp were not deveined (an absolute no for me) and everything was pretty bland. I will neither recommend nor come back to this place again. The food was awful. We had stale bread, chunks of iceberg lettuce that they call salad, and ravioli that was sitting in water. We asked for a clean plate for a meal that came in a casserole dish, and saw them try to remove the soap stains on the plate with saliva. The food here is as good as it was over 50 years ago when I came here as a child with my family. Back then I loved the manicotti and today it's the shrimp cacciatore. The place still has that old world feel. Our server this past Sat., Laurie, was terrific. Accommodated our special requests and then some. Even brought me extra tomatoes when she overheard me make a comment to my friend that I would've taken his that he didn't want. Had dinner there this past Saturday couldn't have been happier. We arrived kind of late so we had no wait. I had my old stand by, chicken Parmesan, probably the best I ever had. Are you kidding me?! I had to travel across the country to find the best Italian seafood I've ever had?! The place is so quaint and homey you'll wanna wear your slippers and pajamas. Our waitress was absolutely the sweetest thing ever. I'm upset I can't remember her name. The locals apparently love the place. They were called by name as they came and went. We started with the toasted ravioli. The portion was great for two men who love to eat. They were cooked just right. My friend chose lentil soup with his meal. It was so flavorful I wanted more than just the taste I was allowed. I chose the Greek salad with my meal. It was fresh and very good. My friend had the chicken parm and he loved it. The portion was perfect. The sauce was very tasty. My Seafood Fra D'Avlo was off the specials list. Man am I glad I went for it. The spicy red sauce was amazing. The seafood was cooked perfectly. Many places tend to overcook it. Tender haddock, shrimp and scallops were plentiful. I chose to have them leave out the mussels and they doubled the shrimp without me asking.
