Tried Maria's Trottoria for the first time. The scenery was quite an improvement from before and the atmosphere was fun and lively. Surprisingly, the operation ran like clockwork! Third time we tried Maria's Trattoria since it opened under new owners. First time we both had shrimp and scallops over their risotto. It was delicious. A few weeks later we brought friends and 3 of us ordered the exact same thing that we had last time. Very disappointed this time - it was just 'eh'. Just got home from our 3rd time at Maria's, and sadly it will be our last. We ordered chicken parm and eggplant parm. Both plates they put on our table were not very hot, and unfortunately both were just less than mediocre. Eggplant was slimy and the pasta tasted like cardboard on both eggplant and chicken parm. My roommates and i have thankfully found this gem. It is your traditional small town restaurant that just serves up delicious homemade Italian comfort foods and great portion sizes. I am a big cheese person and the chicken parm i got had the best amount of cheese melted over it. Each dish seems to come with a greek salad in a cup, and some sliced bread. Just barely short of five stars, only because parking is tough for such a suburban restaurant, and it can get a bit noisy for my taste. That said, it has a fine, clubhouse feel. As others have said, North End on the South Shore. Host is attentive and seats quickly, clearly local wait staff are attentive and friendly. The house salad is good and big enough to share. I especially like the cherry stone clam pasta. They somehow saturate the pasta with flavor, and the clams are delicate and briny, served in the shell. My partner likes the sausage dishes. read more

If tradition is what you're after--and if you have a healthy appetite--Maria's will not disappoint. What the food lacks in elegance, it makes up for in comfort and "Italian grandmotherliness." I placed a takeout order and, when I showed up to pick up my food, I was pleased to see that the restaurant was very busy with orders. Despite a bit of chaos inside, the staff were very friendly and attentive. I had to wait just a few minutes for my order to be boxed up and then, food in hand, I headed back home. I ordered the chicken cacciatore, which came with a Greek salad and a loaf of homemade bread. The bread was absolutely delicious. It was still warm when I got it home, and the outside was crusty with a bit of sesame seeds, with a soft and chewy interior that was like a bit of bread paradise. I could have eaten the entire loaf, but that wasn't the best idea, so I restrained myself and moved on. The Greek salad was good. The veggies were fresh and crisp and the feta cheese had a nice salty, tanginess that added a lot. But it was quite overdressed, in my opinion. The salad could have had half as much dressing and still could have been considered overdressed. The chicken cacciatore came over spaghetti, as I requested. It was good, but not stupendous. The veggies were well-cooked--there were big pieces of onion and pepper that still held on to some of their crispness, but I was a bit disappointed by the sauce. It seemed to lack a bit of flavor. There wasn't anything about it that tasted bad, it just didn't really taste like that much of anything. Typically, at an Italian restaurant, everything is salted to extremes, but this may have been the exact opposite. I almost wish they'd put more salt in the sauce. But they get 10/10 for the chicken, which was tender, juicy, not overcooked at all, and literally melted in my mouth. I was very impressed. The spaghetti was fine, but also nothing special. The portion, though, was absolutely enormous. It was a simple but very satisfying meal that hit all the marks except for intensity of flavor. A pinch more salt, or maybe a few more herbs, or a little more of that Italian-grandma-style-love, may have vaulted it over the top. Definitely good enough that I'll be back, though. It's a good option for those seeking a traditional Italian meal, but don't feel like making the trek to the North End. read more

Food was amazing. Staff was super professional. Everyone was dressed in all black... except for one guy who was wearing a long sleeve t-shirt, jeans, a baseball cap, and a scraggly unkempt beard. I think he was a manager but he might have ben an expeditor. He kept coming out of the kitchen shoving plates into servers hands and barking table numbers. He just didn't fit in with the rest of the staff. He should have stayed in the kitchen or dressed better and taken care of his beard. I probably wouldn't have noticed but I was seated directly across from the kitchen and he kept popping out. It just seemed so out of place. Other than this guy, everything was great. 5 stars anyway. Happy to report this place is operating as incredibly as it was under the previous ownership. A 4 member band was playing tonight and they did an incredible job, kudos to that choice in entertainment. might suggest the back room in a corner for more flexibility though. The staff, wow, so attentive and made you really feel like they were there to make sure you had the best experience possible. We went tonight....absolutely phenomenal! Our party of four had made a reservation and we were seated upon arrival. From the moment we walked in the door until we left a few hours later, our experience was outstanding. The food, drinks, service, hands down the best I have experienced in a very long time! This was my first time at Maria's Trattoria, the others in my group have been several times and raved about everything....finally tonight we were able to align schedules and go. If you have not been or have not been in a while...go! Our server was Erin, she was stellar! Since my initial post, Maria's has changed hands and undergone some considerable changes. They have brought the dining area into this century and did it very well. Nice and open feel with a much larger bar area. Food is still good but features a lot more than the previous iteration. A bit more expensive now but that to be expected. All and all still worth checking out even though the dove feel is gone. read more

Forget what you remember about this place because nothing is the same. Worst food ever. Out of 6 dinners (5 different) every meal was terrible. Two of the dinners were steak frites but you can call it hockey puck and McD's fries. We were told it was flank before we ordered but not sure what we got, worst piece of meat and McD fries are better and are presented better. Veal Parmigiana was so chewy you couldn't eat it. Homemade pasta so bland that maybe cooked salted water could have helped. I could go on but the place is not worth any more of my time. All I can say is STAY AWAY. read more

This place has a nice romantic old Italy feel to it. They bring out a complimentary bread. I ordered fried calamari which the waitress forgot about sadly. But in all honesty the portions are large and good so we probably wouldn't have ate our meals. I was really craving some fresh calamari though. Ok so we went about 3 weeks after the new ownership's take over . We were blown away , great food , crowds .... Fast forward to last night ... sat quickly, nice server , ordered. First sign , oh they are still making your drink (ginger ale) ... dc ordered the special, turns out it was an appetizer.. ok put in order. Apps tasty , I ordered lasagna. Food is excellent and plentiful. There is a good range of dishes and appetizers to choose from. Servers are prompt and helpful. Only one problem with the ambiance - the recorded music is terrible. It's just a lot of thumping and makes it difficult to talk, not to mention that it is definitely not relaxing. I hope Maria's rethinks the music and either turns it off or gets something more relaxing. I also strongly suggest turning the volume down. Other than that, it is a great addition to local restaurants and I'm very glad the restaurant has re-opened. read more

Maria's new renovation was just what it needed. Great bar with some spectacular drinks. We made a reservation which I would suggest on a weekend night because the place was hopping. Ok on to the good stuff. Chicken parm, Eggplant parm and Veal parm were delicious. We all ordered the homemade pasta which was a little under cooked but all said and done it didn't matter because our server Kristen was on her game. She was wonderful. After dinner we decided to have a drink in the bar. Well it didn't disappoint. Yummy espresso martini. We have had numerous dinners at the former Maria's and have had many positive experiences there. Having read most of the reviews of the new Maria's Trattoria, they were very mixed since many loyal customers had dined there for decades and the new restaurant was changed considerably. It was much more upscale with the decor and the limited menu. We had some wine and shared a huge Ceasars salad. It was extremely good. My better half chose the chicken parm and I selected the Bolognese Lasagna. Both dishes were exceptional and substantial. To be honest, it was the best Italian meal that we have had in years. We have loved the old Maria's, but the experience that we had at the new Maria's Trattoria was absolutely fantastic. Thank You!!! read more

I hadn't been to this place in years--primarily because the food was awful and the place was dingy and cramped. I heard it was under new management and decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise. The people who work there are super friendly and attentive. The place is nice and clean with a spacious bar. And the food is very good. Everything is home made. The prices are reasonable. And they don't serve "huge portions." That's always a red flag for me. Before I would have said "run, Toto, run." Now, highly recommended. read more

Picked out Maria's before traveling to Boston from Phoenix. Two magic words were Italian and Seafood. Great choice we all had a great meal. I had the Broiled Fisherman's Platter. It had broiled haddock, scallops, shrimp, stuffed clams. Served with bread, greek salad and baked potato. We topped it off with spumonie ice cream.Sue was our server and she was great. Small unassuming place with older style booths. The luanne plywood barriers installed for covid reasons makes the place look like a corral . We had a great waitress and the food more than made up for the decor. Apps were garlic bread and fried calamari. The calamari was tender with a nice light batter, with a side of minced peppers . I got the special tenderloin with mushrooms and it was cooked as requested. Tasty too. The Haddock au gratin was a big thick piece of haddock with a creamy sauce over au gratin and was very good . The prime rib was also cooked to order and was a tasty thick slab. Overall we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food. The chef takes pride in what he sends out. Kudos. New Marias is better than ever. It still has the charm of the old restaurant along with the fresco's on the wall, but the new bar and tables and restaurant itself is beautiful and you getting north end food without the north end prices I recommended the chicken parm and eggplant parmesan. Our review is based on a private function that we hosted at the venue. The upstairs room has been completely renovated and is bright and welcoming. Zack and his staff were helpful and attentive throughout the process and we can't recommend them enough!! Just a great, stressless experience. The space is perfect for a small 40-80 person gathering. We chose to do a family style service which was fantastic. The Caesar salad and calamari were top notch. We also did a variety of mains Chicken Parm & Francese, lasagna bolognese and fettuccine Alfredo. All of the pastas were homemade and cooked well, our guests raved about the food. We finished with cannoli and tiramisu which were absolutely delicious and beautifully served. Our family and guests are looking forward to returning to the restaurant in the future. Let's start by saying that my family and I were long time customer's of the old Maria's. We loved the owners as well as the food. We were apprehensive of trying this new place as the memories of the old always brings comparisons. I truly appreciate that they kept the mural on the back wall. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very nice young lady. Entering the first room we noticed a wall to wall bar with high top tables. We were then brought to the dining room (believe you need a reservation for that area; we had made one) and we're seated at a table for two between two other tables of two. At first we were a bit uncomfortable sitting so close to other diners, but as luck would have it both tables on either side of us were wonderful people and we were talking back and forth. Both couples next to us were there for the first time as well and were very pleased. Our server was Mary Beth, absolutely wonderful. They have lots of staff which ensure things flow. Now to the food. We were there right at opening on a Sunday night. My husband ordered the chicken parmigiana and I ordered the veal parmigiana. The food came in a timely manner, fresh with huge portions. My veal was cooked as requested and it was delicious and my husband loved his as well. I generally take home half my meal, no different here. My husband rarely takes home food, last night he did. They serve homemade warm bread with pesto, they also have butter for us none pesto loving people. They have an extensive wine and drink menu. I saw desserts that looked scrumptious but was too full to try. The bill was more than reasonable. The restaurant filled up quickly and there was a line out the door as we left.
