It's definitely a pricier menu -- I'd say you need to get at least two small plates per person to be full, so at least $40-50/person -- but if you're looking for a nice dinner, it's worth it. The salmon cubitos, chorizo pizza, and fufu gnocchi were all excellent, and the real highlight was the mango tartlet we got for dessert. I haven't stopped thinking about it since. read more

The reviews for Mariel had me skeptical coming in -- the atmosphere looked fantastic but the food only received okay marks. Boy was I proved wrong! Mariel is one of Boston's best! As aforementioned, the atmosphere is absolutely incredible. You feel as if you're on a tropical vacation or even at Disney's Epcot World -- it's an intimate setting with detailed and intentional decor. The food, like the setting, is unreal! All the plates are tapas-style, and each one brings a new flavor to the table. The tots and empanadas were fantastic to start off the meal, and the queso frito had us savoring every last bite. The pizza was perfect to really fill us up, and topping the meal off with the delicious lemon/coffee doughnuts was the absolute perfect move. The drinks were also phenomenal, and I highly recommend the pina colada and guava mojito for a creamy but tangy balance. I have nothing but incredible things to say about Mariel. The decor and vibe in here is cool - feels like you're actually in Cuba. Went with a group for brunch and we started with the pork empanadas and mozzarella waffle sticks and both were delicious! I got the broken eggs with shoestring potatoes and it was so flavorful and very filling. We decided to do a big guava mojito and they set it on fire which was cool but the drink itself was way too sweet for us. I ended up getting a regular mojito, which had too much lime juice and was too sour but one of my friends got the cafe cubano (kind of like an espresso martini but with rum) and said it was good - it's cold but served in a coffee cup. I've been hearing a lot about this new establishment in the last couple of weeks, so I was eager to check it out, mainly because of their Sunday brunch/day party, so I gathered a couple friends together and made a reservation. Although I must say, I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to get a seat because most of the yelp reviews I've read suggested reserving weeks in advance due to the popularity of the restaurant, but I had no troubles whatsoever making a reservation a few days before hand by calling the restaurant and leaving a message. Someone returned my call the next day and I was able to set something up without any problems. I did try to book online before calling, but the system didn't appear to be working correctly. I actually ended up getting to the restaurant about a half hour early and was seated right away. I believe because of COVID-19, the restaurant was at less than half its capacity. The entire bar area was empty and besides my friends and I, there were only three other tables being served. I didn't mind that it wasn't too busy. It was nice to just be able to hear each other talk and receive pretty consistent service. The decor itself is a five in my book. The color scheme in the restaurant is light and airy in a way, but still has the dramatic flair of Cuban culture. I also like the uniforms the waiters wear. It was a very breezy and carefree look that was reminiscent of the islands. As for the food, it was pretty good. I can only comment on my own dish rather than what my friends ordered. We all split the guava coffee cake as an appetizer, and that was large enough to share with at least 4 people. It was warm, sweet, and light enough to eat without becoming too full before the main entree. I ordered the la bandeja which is probably best if shared between two or more people. I couldn't finish my plate nor did I want to bring it home. For me, personally there were too many items on the plate and most were very heavy (rice, fried cheese, French fries, plantains). I really only ordered it for the rice and pork, but both food items were overcooked and way too dry for my liking. Great atmosphere and great drinks but food was slightly lacking. The Empanadas were the best thing we ate here, those were delicious. However the meatballs we ordered afterwords as well as the street pizza were extremely salty and greasy. Not what I was expecting from a higher end restaurant like this place. You definitely are paying for the unique atmosphere, which is worth noting. The decor is beautiful and the dining room has very grand high ceilings making it a very instagrammable spot, and the mojito I ordered was by far the most pretty and delicious mojito I've ever had! But the plates are extremely small, tapas style, and didn't exactly wow me with their flavor. If you appreciate delicious food, well made cocktails, and a gorgeous ambiance, this is your place! Made a dinner reservation with two friends on Monday. We weren't able to get a table in the dining room but only in the bar area - not a huge issue since it's directly connected and not closed off by any means. However, because we wanted to feel included in the grandeur of the stunning dining room, we asked for a table as close to it as possible that allowed us a great vantage point of everything in the restaurant. Mariel is beautiful inside and looks rather upscale - great for celebrations and occasions. Our waitress was Paulina, who gave plenty of recommendations and checked up on us sufficiently. While the service here is decent, prepare to feel somewhat rushed given the 2-hour dining time limit. For cocktails, if you have a group and are all about that insta-worthy presentation, go for the DTO (daiquiri time out) - you have options of how many daiquiris you want included in the cocktail "tree", which is served with flaming limes and lovely flowers adorning the drink structure. Talk about impressive! My friends chose that, while I ordered the Quinta (one of the best tequila cocktails I've had) followed by the Thirst Elyx (a delicious and gorgeous vodka cocktail). Pretty sure you can't go wrong with any of the drinks here, as they are all well made, strong, and so aesthetically pleasing! Onto the food - we ordered the following: yuca cheese puffs (light, interesting, good start to the meal), pork empanadas (savory perfection), octopus pinarenos (beyond tender and delicious), fufu gnocchi (my personal favorite, a MUST order, with flawless textures), blackened shrimp (another winner in terms of flavor), steak churrasco (can't go wrong with this), and pollo pizza (don't be deterred by the pineapple, it WORKS with the chicken adobo). Everything was absolutely DELICIOUS. It's rare that a restaurant gets every single dish right in terms of flavors and presentation, but somehow Mariel managed to achieve that feat. No, this is not a hole-in-the-wall traditional Cuban restaurant, but a more modern and creative spin on the cuisine, which is so well executed here. I would try everything on the menu if I had the stomach capacity! The dessert menu was highly tempting, but we were on the brink of food-induced sleep by the time we polished off the aforementioned dishes. Lively, loud, good food and flavor though spotty service as the night progressed and the restaurant became busier. We finally made it after having issues finding open reservations during the weekends. We ended up going midweek and the host still had us wait a little while when we arrived at the time of our reservation - it was packed for dinner time, which also made it harder to hear, we had to lean forward when talking often. However, we enjoyed each part of the meal. We ordered several smaller dishes and a couple of desserts, and each dish was well-balanced, flavorful, and unique - of the many dinner items we ordered the key lime calamari was probably the least impressive although still delicious. I don't often say this but dinner was definitely more tastier than dessert here. The only slight disappointment was that they were out of mango when we went, so the cocktails we were intending to try could not be served, however the ones we got instead were still very good as well and we would definitely revisit Mariel to try out a few of their other drinks. I can't say enough about the beautiful atmosphere here. My mood immediately lightened when I walked in the door. It's stunning. Every little detail is well-thought-out and works perfectly together. I highly recommend for fancy date nights and celebrations. The menu and food were also incredible. Drinks were all delicious and super unique. We tried many off the menu and all were perfect. Many of their drinks are quite interesting, which meant that some at the table loved, while others didn't love the flavor profiles, but each one was enjoyed by at least one of us. We took many of the food recommendations from the server's assistant. He spoke with passion about each item and enticed us to try them all. Everything was incredible. (pictures attached) Unfortunately, I couldn't give this restaurant a 5 star review due to the lack of professionalism and the poor service that we received from our actual server. From the moment we sat down, he acted as though he couldn't be less excited to be there. He had his fists stuffed in his pockets each time he came to check on us (which was rare) and was open-mouth chomping on gum. He left dirty glasses on the table after each cocktail round and never offered new drinks when our currents were low. The other servers in the area seemed to take notice, so stepped up and made our experience better, but it didn't eliminate the fact that our own server was far from stellar. Towards the end of our meal, he dropped the check off without saying a word and without offering dessert (which we wanted). When he came back and we informed him that we would like to order dessert, he seemed annoyed. It was very confusing since the restaurant was not closing. This was such a beautiful, fun dinner to have! You have to go into this knowing it won't be cheap and the portion sizes are smaller than normal. But given that - we really enjoyed our dinner here. I can't remember our servers name but he was super friendly and funny, we really loved him. But also every worker we encountered was very nice, so 10/10 for service. The aesthetic of this place is part of why you come here and it did not disappoint. We loved getting the daiquiri tree (DTO), although we were only able to get it in 1 flavor. I think they should offer it in other flavors and let you mix within your order, since your party could want different flavors. The portion of the drinks themselves are quite small, so it's really for the fun of it. We also had mojitos after and those were really good. They have such cool drinks here so you must try. The food, although smaller portions, was incredibly delicious!! AMBIENCE: - What a gorgeous restaurant. I feel the interior is a piece of art itself. We were seated at the bar so we couldn't experience the courtyard in Cuba feel that inspired the owner's design but the bar was gorgeous none the less. I usually seat uncomfortably at bars since the high stools are far too high for someone as short as me and usually much more uncomfortable in general but we felt relaxed the entire dinner SERVICE: - Great bartenders. One of the perks of sitting at the bar is watching their magic happen. They are truly artists in their trade. Every drink they made seemed delicious - Food came incredibly fast except for the lamb. The bartenders seemed to enjoy working there and were giving off a great vibe as we watched them in between conversation FOOD/DRINKS: - Key Lime Calamari = Well breaded throughout each piece and a nice crunch. Tender and cooked to perfection, which is hard not to overcook octopus. The squeeze of lime was perfect to bright up the dish and although the mini mason jar is adorable (I love mini things), it wasn't very practical as we couldn't spoon any of it out like intended. We ended up just pouring the whole thing on the calamari regardless since it was good. - Pan Queso Frito = I love myself some cheese and chunks of it would only make me happier. The guava onion jam was to die for (can I please have some to-go?) and the paprika oil was a nice touch. - Tuna Coco Crudo = Delicious and the tuna was so so fresh. However, it was a little bit too much on the citrus side for me. As I was eating it, I kept wishing I had something to offset the drench of citrus juice it was in. It was later when I saw another table ordering this that I realized they never gave us the chips that it came with! That would've given it more texture and what I wanted to cut the sourness. - Colorado Lamb Ribs = So tender and pulls right off the bone. The marinade reminds me slightly of Chinese cuisine. - Fufu Gnocchi = Wow. Absolutely wow. This was the highlight of the entire show. I personally don't like gnocchi because it tends to make me feel very heavy afterwards but I nearly tried to eat this whole plate by myself because it was so good. It is not your traditional gnocchi in that they are much much bigger and more circular than oval. The pan fried sear on them though was perfect and provided some support to the soft chewy gnocchi. 10/10 would recommend this! - Pollo Pizza = A good solid pizza. A bit slightly heavy on the pineapple for my taste. I like pineapple on pizza but is very sensitive to sour so too much pineapple can be overpowering for me. The chicken was tender and moist. The scallions provided a great punch of flavor. Never knew that pineapple and scallion would pair so well together. I'll give them points for the innovation. - Castro '26 = Cute drink that looks like a birthday cake in cocktail form. The drink was delicious but I couldn't tell if that was from the fact that there just isn't that much alcohol in there or if they made the cocktail so well that it hid the alcohol taste from me. It was the cinnamon whip that called me towards it, which was a bit disappointing when I couldn't quite taste it in the drink. The food here was creative, flavorful and beautifully plated. I would say the prices are on the higher end but the cost of the atmosphere and vibes probably attributes to that. My friends and I came on a Sunday night and the place was quite busy. The waitstaff were all friendly and food came out as it was ready. I had been considering ordering a second drink as mine was empty for a while and my friend and I had been considering ordering other menu items, but we did not have the opportunity before our server arrived with the dessert menu (which I took as our queue to start wrapping up). Dining on tapas that are brought out gradually and also ordering a dessert in that time window felt tight while also trying to catch up with a friend, but I did appreciate that even though there was music playing, we could easily have a conversation and the setting is really unique. When our dessert arrived, my friend said she had spoken to our server about getting a candle in it as we were celebrating my birthday (we had seen another table get their dessert with a candle), but ours didn't have one. What a breathtaking atmosphere! When you approach the dining area, you feel as if you have walked onto one of the cute streets in Old Havana in Cuba. The murals and graffiti scheme is beautiful. The servers and waiters were abiding by Covid-19 precautions wearing masks and there was plexiglass dividers between the tables. The food and drinks are a little pricey, but it is worth the cost. Started out at the Bar where I got a Guanabana Jugo Fresco, the bartender made it in less than a minute and was so refreshing and delicious. It was among the best non alcoholic beverages I've had, it tasted like a tropical fruit. The ambience of Mariel is what makes this restaurant so special from these huge chandeliers and unique bathroom setups. We waiter recommend 2 snacks and 3 smalls and 1 pizza for a party of 2. The food is served tapas so small plates. We started off with the Pollo pizza it had pineapple, chicken and peppers, it was probably a 6-7 inch pizza slightly on the salty side but the pineapple balanced things out. Next we got the Yuca Cheese Puffs where were like homemade cheese balls like the snack with melted cheese inside, they were so delicious. They have us 4 of them. Then we got the Pork Empandas which they served with a salsa, it came with a side of salsa, it had a delicious buttery crust which I loved. They gave us 2 of Empandas. Next we got the Fufu Gnochi which looks like scallops they serve with these crispy long chips on top and over a pool of oil and pesto. The gnochi itself has a nice sear but not much flavor without the pesto. The consistency is quite chewy. We also ordered the lamb ribs in this sticky barbecue sauce, it tasted like any typical kind of ribs, I think it was best eaten with your hands. They were good but nothing that blew my mind. Finally we got the coconut flan which was recommended, it is like a soft pudding or jello with a small coconut flavor and some caramel and candied pineapples on top. Very cool Cuban restaurant and it was popping on a Thursday! I came here for a friend's birthday and we had a great time. There was a live DJ which was really cool, but it was REALLY LOUD! I could barely hear the person next to me. The place has high ceilings and beautiful art that makes you forget you are in Boston! Drinks were unique and tasty. Many drinks have tropical fruits like guava, lychee, and pineapple. The Quino with lychee and mojito with guava were very good! The small plates to share were quite small for sharing especially with our large party of 11. All the food was really good, but again the portions were very small. We tried many dishes, but my favorites were the Fufu Gnocchi, Blackened Shrimp, Avocado con mojo, Ensalada del campo, and Congri Rice and Beans. The gnocchi was light with a little crisp outside, so good! We also tried the chorizo and pollo pizza, chicken tots, and pork empanadas. We've been trying to get into Mariel during a weekend for the longest time . We were finally able to get in on a Saturday night . The restaurant is big and nicely laid out . Service is fast ( as there is a 1.5 hour seating limit ) . Drinks were very nicely made. Mariel is known for its food and our night didn't disappoint . Food was 10/10! I didn't want our night to end . Portions are small but so tasty . Not salty , great temperature and just so delicious. What a blast from the past this place was since I was literally walking into the office building I previously had worked at back in 2001/2002 and now its transformed into this? This place took over the left half of 10 Post Office Square office building to turn the place into a Cuban decked out fantasy. I mean the inside of this place will blow you away. When you walk into this place, the decor and the bar, and the walls will blow you away, floor to ceiling Havana decor, walls, art, lights, absolutely impressive. The menu here is tapas and a collection of Cuban cocktails complete with various Mojitos and other concoctions. The food is delicious and you have to order at least 6-8 dishes for your party to share, lots of small bites, creative cheese baked dishes, pizza, chicken cubes which were interesting, chips, guacamole and other Cuban delicacies. My real ID (21 years old) was denied due to the fact that I was from Hawaii and the employee outside said "we don't get many of these." He then asked for a photo of my passport, to which I responded "Hawaii is part of the United States, so I don't carry a photo of my passport around." He then very rudely told me to get out of line.
