The mani and pedi were fine, but the experience was unpleasant because of the way the owner, Marietta, behaved. She barked at me when I was taking 'too long' to choose a nail color, and then barked at me again when I asked if she was the owner. She said, "I'm not the owner - what does it have to do with you?". I've been there recently and left without getting my nails done because the manicure lady, who seems to be the owner, was so unpleasant, racist, and kept making mean comments about people's appearance. She literally told me she knew someone from my home country, but that the person she knew wasn't pretty because she looked African, and that her friend who married that woman could have married better. She also made comments on people's weight. I excused myself and left. After reading the place's review on Groupon I saw other people experienced the same kind of racist comments. Called to kindly book an appointment for the Groupon I purchased, she was belittling and mean. We settled on a 4pm appointment time after she refused to book any appointment after 5pm quoting she had "customers" (as if I wasn't one). I received a call to confirm my booking and when I finally got the nerve to call back to kindly cancel (as I didn't feel like giving my service to someone who clearly doesn't want it) she began to belittle me again on the phone. Got a groupon and went here for the first time this weekend for a no-chip mani and pedi. At first they seemed a little chaotic because of the amount of customers but they made plenty of time for my friend and I and we didn't feel rushed at all! Marietta is also so nice! She's really personable and does an AMAZING job with nails. I'd definitely return for other services. She also gave my friend and I some other coupons and signed us up to get her email deals as well. Both services took about an hour and a half which I felt like was the perfect amount of time. Not rushed but we definitely didn't feel like we were sitting there forever. Overall I was very impressed. I give it four stars because the amount of chaos and how much they were trying to figure out their schedules while we were sitting in the chairs. DO NOT GO HERE This was hands down the worst spa I've ever been to in the city. I got a no chip manicure and deep tissue 30 minute massage. For the no chip mani, she only did 1 layer so it was see through and looked terrible. I got an infection and my nails turned brown 3 days after the service. It also is peeling off already. The massage was so light, not deep tissue at all. She complained that her back hurt and her attitude was short and rude. I will not be going back and hope you do the same. read more

I purchased a TravelZoo deal that included an hour Swedish massage and No Chip Manicure. I was disappointed with my No chip manicure. Not only did she not cut my cuticles and only offer 2 very neutral color options, but my no-chip polish began to lift 2 days later. The massage service was good and very relaxing; however, I was a bit put off by the lack of cleanliness of the facilities. I prayed that the sheets that covered the massage bed were clean....probably should have just left altogether. The lady that serviced me was very friendly, but the other items left a bad taste in my mouth. I would not return to this place. read more

This review is for the hair stylist at Marietta's, named Jossi. She is phenomenal! My daughters and I have been seeing Jossi for over 3 yrs now and we get great compliments on our color and cuts. Not sure how she does it but our hair is semi-curly and tends to frizz, but Jossi cuts it in a way that it lays perfectly. So much so that we've gotten lazy and barely have to style our hair. I've had great stylists in the past but Jossi keeps us coming back with her energy and skill. I was on the Anderson Cooper show recently and the stylist complimented me on my color. I'm here to stay. So impressed with this nail salon! I had an out of town wedding to fly out to early Friday morning, and was running behind (per usual) trying to squeeze everything in. The only thing I had left to do was a mani/pedi, but it was after 8 pm, and I had pretty much given up hope since all of the places I usually go to were already closed. I drove past Marietta's, and even though the sign said the salon closed at 8, the lights were still on, so I ran in to see if she could help...she ended up staying until almost 10 pm giving me a (great) mani/pedi that still hasn't chipped almost a week later! I was amazed that as a first-time customer, not only did she accomodate me, but she also took her time to do the job right and did not rush or skimp on either service, which was also reasonably priced at $35. I get a manicure on a weekly basis, and have been to a lot of nail salons...this is the first time I've ever been impressed enough to write a review for one. Highly recommend! read more

I purchased a TravelZoo coupon for $59, which included an hour Swedish massage and No Chip Manicure. It was the worst experience I ever had in my SPA life. The owner did not bother to cut my cuticles, choices of polish was less than 4, I picked Buble Bath since I'm familiar with this OPI favorite. I did not think it was going to be more hellish, well it did. Salon was certainly not clean and did not have a purported Gold Coast spa environtment. Very dirty and old. The massage therapist SAT on a rolling Chair the entire HOUR of my treatment. I understand that it is Swedish therefore not deep - but come on, pouring oil on my hair, neck and shoulder area for a good 35 minutes was unbelievable and disgusting! To top it all, I still went ahead and tipped both of them. I'm such a sucker. Never again should TravelZoo include this salon on their listing becasue it is not fair to devoted customers and money does not grow on trees. Her welcoming demeanor instantly made me feel comfortable. Excellent customer service from Day 1! After 2 years, I moved out of the Gold-coast area, but I couldn't imagine leaving Marietta... so, I regularly commute 30 minutes via public transportation to come to her spa. I wanted to like this place - the women who worked here were SO SWEET. But honestly, I didn't love my mani-pedi. They were just a little pushy though, and didn't really listen to me. They did my mani while I was getting my pedi and they did it to be nice because they knew I was on lunch and going back to work - but it felt rushed and not as good of quality. I wish yelp had no stars because that's what I'd give this place. I came for my appointment and was told that they wouldn't be able to take care of me. Not even sure why but it was apparent there was some tension between the owner and employees. I asked if they would at least take off my no chip polish given that I'd come all the way from the South Loop. She complained about that and then one of her employees grab my hand roughly out of the acetone and started scraping the color off my nail without it even being ready. Rude and unprofessional. I told her that she was hurting me only to be told that no chip was hard to take off. I told her to forget it and left. I had purchased a living social or a groupon deal here, and added the appointment to my calendar. Surprisingly, when I arrived she didn't have me on her calendar. Marietta did ask a couple of times to verify my appointment as if she couldn't believe me or herself for not writing it down. I actually wrote it down on the coupon as well. I was a bit disappointed to have my aromatherapy spa manicure and pedicure service done with someone else other than Marietta herself although she was finishing up with someone else. I feel like I should have told her that I could wait for her instead. I had Christine, and she was ok. She didn't seem overly concerned that I cared about the quality of the nail job, there was a lint of string that was on my nail that was painted over though I wanted her to take off the polish and do it over. She made it seem like it wasn't a big deal and that I should just live with it. I know she was intent on going home, and I was the last client for the day. Marietta did give me some extra coupons to come back and refer other people, and I just didn't get the wow experience that I though I would be getting in the coupon. The aromatherapy was just a marketing ploy to get you thinking that there might be more to it than scented scrubs and lotion. I don't think I could pay what the regular price of the service is to justify that. Marietta is certainly a sweetheart, but it's not the only thing that keeps me at a nail salon or spa. read more

Came here cause of the groupon deal, and it worked out since I happened to be doing a little shopping near the salon. Had a pedicure and no chip mani. Immediately was greeted by Marietta who told me to pick a polish and asked if Ide like a tea or water. Very nice lady. Polish selection isn't huge, but I grabbed my two picks and headed to one of the two pedicure chairs. Young girl did my pedi/no chip. Forgot her name...anyways, was sad to find out that the chairs back massager was on its last leg...just made some grinding noise, and not a lot of pressure. At the salon I normally go to, their chairs are so intense on your back muscles that you feel like you're literally getting pushed out of the chair. On the plus side, my pedicure turned out nice, but I'm not so sure about the no chip...as you can see from my pic I currently do not have the longest nails. But I think she could have done a better job on the cuticles. Also, after the polish was set she filed the tops down, taking polish off the tips. I bought a Groupon for an aroma therapyPedi / no chip mani for $45 thinking that if i purchased the regular one it wasn't going to be enough pampering but i was wrong. The lady named cecilia who did my service was super friendly really nice got me tea and asked if I was doing ok thru out the service, however I didn't like the way the pedicure was done there was no type of aroma therapy going on she barely put on any scrub, the foot massage was poorly done no pressure enough to where i couldve enjoyed what a pedicure is for, didn't clean the inside of nails or put lotion on afterwards. Next was my no chip manicure, I asked for square I got round ( ok that's not a big issue) but she barely cut my cuticles and i never got a hand massage or lotion I had to ask for some. Marietta is a hard worker who gives a thorough and fabulous massage: legs, feet, arms, back, hands, neck -- and she makes sure she gets the knots out.
