Marilyn's is in fact open again. They are in the process of getting their liquor license. I stopped in today, to grab lunch. I ordered a gyro and hummus The hummus has great presentation and the flavor was really good. The hummus had a pitted Kalamata olive and a few whole garbanzo beans with a few half slices of cucumber. The gyro was 95% meat, the lettuce and tomato were fresh and even when I got home the lettuce was not wilted. The pita bread was still warm and pillow soft. The tzatziki sauce had great flavor. The beef gyro wrap was absolutely stuffed with delicious thin slices of a beef/lamb combo meat and the chicken schwarma wrap was seasoned to perfection. Nice small restaurant in a little plaza. Friendly service and there seemed to be a few patrons who were regulars. The menu included Mediterranean options but there was also fresh fish listed on a side board that you could do with sides or pasta. The food I'm afraid didn't hit the mark - * the ceviche and chips were good but a lot more tomato than fish, * the beef tri-tip was really good but the babaganoush and tzatziki it came with didn't have much flavor, * the fish (red snapper) was a huge piece but did not taste good, it had a weird taste and smell. We ended up taking it home and asked my mom if she wanted it; she said it was spoiled and asked me how I didn't smell it but we just thought it was due to the spices - pretty disappointing I'm hoping the fish situation was a one-off and/or we were wrong about it being spoiled because serving bad fish is definitely bad for business. Wow, what a gem. Every customer leaves with a smile. The staff are energetic, upbeat, polite, and friendly. The food is homemade and amazingly fresh. I enjoyed the scallops plate, ceviche, and Chilean seabass plate very much. The seafood is fresh from the seafood market next door. Marilyn's serves mostly food from the the old region known as the Levant or the lands bordering the eastern Mediterranean in the direction where the sun seems to rise. Also included are Greece, Armenia, & Turkey along with Italy, a touch of Spain. There is a taco dish originally from México possibly in homage to California having been a territory of México & Spain. Or anything can now be put in a taco & sells well even in as chic a Nouvelle Cuisine restaurant as Michael's in Santa Monica during the reign of Chef de Cuisine John Carlos Kuramoto now heading Ainoko in West Hollywood. Stripmall, comfortable bare bones setting w/ pictures of Thera/Santorini, the blue Aegean, hardwood tables & chairs, small cozy space that has an unpretentious feel. 1) Hummus (whom moose) bi Tahini can be part of a typical Lebanese Mezze/appetizer. Mashed chickpeas, earthy, funky garlic, sesame paste for nuttiness, lemon juice as a gastrique & sprinkling of red chile powder to enliven the pasty texture. Drizzling of golden virgin olive oil to add luscious, buttery mouthfeel. Chiffonade of green basil for herbal effect. Hummus which means chickpea in Arabic is excellent at Marilyn's serving as a tasty dip for the warm pita flat bread. 2) Beef Gyro (yee roh) Plate: Generous serving of knife cut beef shavings from what may come from vertical rotisserie where thinly sliced, herbed beef piled on top of each other into the shape of a cylinder is roasted. Seasonings for the beef was good but the meat was extremely salty & dried out which detracted from this dish. Nice accompaniment of sautéed broccoli, carrots, zucchini in a bit of brown broth. The menu mentioned Tzatziki (cha chi kee) as another accompaniment which is yogurt, cucumber, garlic, dill, lemon juice. Tzatiki would have been an excellent palate cleanser to to heavy beef flavour & texture. However, without warning I got another small bowl of Hummus instead which was a bummer since I already had ordered the Hummus as an app. Bad planning on part of the kitchen & server. Good part is that I was able to order Asahi Kuro Nama extra dark beer which has smooth, mellow, roasted, toasty rounded grain flavour w/ a touch of treacle & acidity to clear the palate. Bad part was the extra long wait from the time we ordered to the time we got the food. We came about an hour before closing and were the last ones in the restaurant. Everybody ahead of us already had their meals so it was only our party of 4 that the kitchen had to cook for. Update!!!! Marilyn did contact me and apologized and gave me my money back for the food. This is why I am updating my review! Came today at 11:30 to treat my Dad to lunch. He had the beef wrap with salad, said it was good. I decided to try the fish and chips which actually tasted pretty good! Seemed a bit oily though. The problem was 10 minutes after arriving home I didn't feel well and had the runs. I only had cereal today, so I know I got sick from the food. I have been burping up the oil taste all day and still don't feel well, oil had to been rancid or old. Really a bummer to throw money down the toilet! We used to like coming here, but sadly sickness makes me not want to return. I called at 3:50 to inform the manger, and our waiter Sean said she wasn't in. I had read all the positive Yelp reviews and knew I needed to visit but just never seemed to make it. Don't let the strip mall location fool you. This restaurant serves some amazing food and service is impeccable. The restaurant is pretty small inside and has maybe 10 tables. I noticed many people coming in for take-out which would be a great option as well. The restaurant is clean and the owner was a very sweet lady that stopped by our table and thanked us for coming. Great touch! Our waiter was a young man and he was friendly and efficient and kept our glasses full of great iced tea. The wife ordered the beef shawarma plate with pita and hummus and I ordered the chicken gyro plate with salad and rice. Both plates were absolutely delicious. I wanted Mediterranean food and we tried Marilyn's rather than a chain restaurant, as I would prefer to support a local business anyway. The food was fresh and tasty and there is a wide selection. The owners are all family and Marilyn is actually working in the kitchen. They own the fresh seafood market next door so there is a great selection of seafood dishes. We never saw menus until late in the meal; we ordered, with guidance from the server (Marilyn's daughter?), off of the handwritten signs at the front of the restaurant. Also, we knew going in that the family that started this restaurant somewhat recently owns & has operated West Coast Seafood (next door) for 30 years. Of course we ordered seafood! We started with steamed clams and fried calamari, both really good! I ordered the black cod, a couple of us got the branzino and one the shrimp pesto pasta special. While we waited, plates of hummous and baba ghanoush showed up. I've eaten LOTS of both of those staples...this was the best baba ghanoush that I've ever had! The main entrees were all very well received. The black cod reminded me of Chilean sea bass...it was SO good! None of us had anything negative to say about any of the food. Then a menu shows up. They also feature a variety of non-seafood Mediterranean dishes. Even though NOT getting seafood here seems crazy, based on everything we experienced, I SO want to try their Shawarma! We ordered the chicken shawarma with veggies and baba ghanoush and koftah kebab with hummus and rice. Hubby loved the koftah kebab and my favorite thing was the hummus. I know it's ridiculous, but I would have been perfectly happy eating a large bowl of that hummus with their delicious fluffy pita. I love carbs, what can I say? The portions are large and I think it could be easily shared by two. Since it was our first time they offered us dessert and we couldn't resist the tiramisu. Sooo disappointed. I love supporting family owned businesses and was super excited to try this place. The waiter was very nice. I ended up sharing the cola and the beef kebab plate with my friend. The dolma was terrible we only ate one and asked to switch it for something else and the owner said we would have to buy something else. So frustrating we were the only people in there and she couldn't even come out to talk to us and instead kept sending the waiter as the messenger. She said we had to pay for it and we didn't even touch it ten dollars down the drain there. Worst of all the meat was absolute rubber, after lunch my friend and I both got super sick. We stopped by Marilyn's for lunch with my Boyfriend's father as he had heard good reviews for it in the past. The place had pretty minimal decor and we were the only patrons there, it seemed like more of a to-go place. In fact, a handful of people did pick up to-go orders while we were there. The owner seemed to know all the pick-up people and was very personable. The menu has a range of pasta dishes, seafood dishes and greek dishes. Judging by the fish pictures on the wall, I got the sense this place may be more of a seafood spot, but being there for greek food and a vegetarian, I got the hummus and pita and my boyfriend got the falafel wrap. The hummus was ok, but the "tahini" they brought with it was undoubtedly not tahini! I think it must have been tartar sauce. I tasted my boyfriends "tahini" and tasted like tartar sauce as well. Being the tahini lovers we are, this was disappointing and really didn't mesh with our greek food. The food was fine otherwise, but it really gave me the feeling that this is more of a seafood place. Maybe their fish dishes are the stars here. But, if you are in the area and are craving Mediterranean food, I would recommend going to Greek House Cafe instead. read more
