Visiting my bro, he sends us to one of his favorite local restaurants while he attended a neighborhood association meeting. The place is clean, unassuming and in a strip mall. We never saw menus until late in the meal; we ordered, with guidance from the server (Marilyn's daughter?), off of the handwritten signs at the front of the restaurant. Also, we knew going in that the family that started this restaurant somewhat recently owns & has operated West Coast Seafood (next door) for 30 years. Of course we ordered seafood! We started with steamed clams and fried calamari, both really good! I ordered the black cod, a couple of us got the branzino and one the shrimp pesto pasta special. While we waited, plates of hummous and baba ghanoush showed up. I've eaten LOTS of both of those staples...this was the best baba ghanoush that I've ever had! The main entrees were all very well received. The black cod reminded me of Chilean sea bass...it was SO good! None of us had anything negative to say about any of the food. Then a menu shows up. They also feature a variety of non-seafood Mediterranean dishes. Even though NOT getting seafood here seems crazy, based on everything we experienced, I SO want to try their Shawarma! Great food served by great people! We came by to grab a bite to eat before a movie and we were super pleased by the service and food. Everyone is super friendly and helpful! We ordered the chicken shawarma with veggies and baba ghanoush and koftah kebab with hummus and rice. Hubby loved the koftah kebab and my favorite thing was the hummus. I know it's ridiculous, but I would have been perfectly happy eating a large bowl of that hummus with their delicious fluffy pita. I love carbs, what can I say? The portions are large and I think it could be easily shared by two. Since it was our first time they offered us dessert and we couldn't resist the tiramisu. Sooo disappointed. I love supporting family owned businesses and was super excited to try this place. The waiter was very nice. I ended up sharing the cola and the beef kebab plate with my friend. The dolma was terrible we only ate one and asked to switch it for something else and the owner said we would have to buy something else. So frustrating we were the only people in there and she couldn't even come out to talk to us and instead kept sending the waiter as the messenger. Great neighborhood restaurant. This was our second time eating at Marilyn's and the experience was just as good as the first. We ordered the Beef Shawarma and the Kuftah Kabob Wrap, which our waitress said was her favorite dish. The food was excellent and came out quickly. Before I get into the breakdown, I thought I would mention that Claudia B. stated in a review that she saw sushi, tacos and other items on the menu that were not Mediterranean related. It has likely changed because I didn't see it on the menu. Good: + Food was D-Lish-Us! I ordered the beef shwarma plate and my Fiance ordered gyro wrap. The meat on my shwarma plate was so good! The fries were seasoned and crunchy. It came with hummus which also tasted great. The gyro wrap was on point. My Fiance was absolutely thrilled that we found a quality Mediterranean place in Simi Valley. They serve beer and wine as well. + Service was phenomenal. Zero complaints. A gentleman welcomed us from the beginning we walked in and was extremely polite. Food was served hot, water was refilled timely and our bill was taken care promptly. + Ambiance and Decor is nice. Now, this isn't a large restaurant, but they did enough decorative design to be very welcoming to patrons. They have light music playing in the background. Facility was extremely clean. I couldn't find one flaw either on the glass separating the dining tables and the kitchen, nor the tables, floors and cooking area. They keep it really clean here. + Price was very fair. We stopped by Marilyn's for lunch with my Boyfriend's father as he had heard good reviews for it in the past. The place had pretty minimal decor and we were the only patrons there, it seemed like more of a to-go place. In fact, a handful of people did pick up to-go orders while we were there. The owner seemed to know all the pick-up people and was very personable. The menu has a range of pasta dishes, seafood dishes and greek dishes. Judging by the fish pictures on the wall, I got the sense this place may be more of a seafood spot, but being there for greek food and a vegetarian, I got the hummus and pita and my boyfriend got the falafel wrap. The hummus was ok, but the "tahini" they brought with it was undoubtedly not tahini! I think it must have been tartar sauce. I tasted my boyfriends "tahini" and tasted like tartar sauce as well. Being the tahini lovers we are, this was disappointing and really didn't mesh with our greek food. The food was fine otherwise, but it really gave me the feeling that this is more of a seafood place. The food is TERRIBLE!!! I was REALLY hoping I'd like it because our regular amazing place (Greek House) is under construction. The hummus is tasteless which I didn't know was even possible. The pita tasted like raw flour/dough! The dressing for the Greek salad tasted suspiciously like wishbone Italian, it even had that syrupy consistency. Come on! Even the feta on the salad was not flavorful. They give you a generous portion of meat for the gyro pita but it was just ok. The tzatziki tasted like yogurt with fresh dill and nothing else. I want my $16 dollars back. I can see the employees and owner are hard workers and I appreciate that. They are Greek but their food just isn't good. Not very good, was in simi and wanting some good Mediterranean food so we found this place with decent reviews, my ground tri tip sandwich was grilled on a flat top and slightly burnt, why not do it on a skewer? It tased like a bad meatloaf and unsatisfying, the hummus was bitter and only finished it because I was hungry. Definitely will not go here again and I guess this is all simi has to offer now for m food. I loved my chicken shewerma plate (lunch special). For a lunch special of about $8, the plate with the sides is worth it. I received a good amount of chicken, fresh salad, with pita bread, and baba ganoush and a delicious dressing. Surprisingly, Marilyn's has authentic imported Japanese beers that go well with Mediterranean food. They have Coedo's Shikkoku Black lager beer, which is actually light on flavor, and a moderate 5%ABV. Another, beer I had my eyes one was a sweet potato lager. Coedo's Beniaka (ale brewed with sweet potato, 7%ABV) is amazing ! Great! Delicious! Wow! The mildly sweetness after taste comes from the sweet potato. It's delicious! It has a sweet caramel taste from start to finish, giving it a delicate soft flavor working together well with the to bold hoppy taste. It is unique. My wife ordered a beef shawarma sandwich with baba ghanoush, though it tasted good, it was served cold. They had one waitress who was seemed not to know what she was doing. I may live in Simi Valley, but I sure don't relate to fellow diners out here. I honestly find most Simi Valley-ites are content with mediocre food. I am a bonafide food snob, and I am NOT okay with mediocrity. I will go one step further and say that Marilyn's Mediterranean Restaurant is, right now, on my mediocrity list. I found it to be sub-par, and I know they tried hard to please us. My first issue is that while they advertised as a "Mediterranean" restaurant, why were we viewing sushi (Japanese), fish and chips (British) or Mexican food items on their menu? I see how a number of fish dishes found their way onto this menu; that makes total sense. However, when you start to introduce them as fish "tacos" or sushi, that takes on a whole different image. It didn't work for me, it was confusing, and I'm wondering if their attempt at broadening their range of items causes them failure to hone their craft. I don't really think they have found their identity....or stick with it. In furtherance of this menu confusion, I also thought it odd what they listed for appetizers. I have never been offered shrimp scampi as an appetizer, and I really don't think of it that way. It should have been a featured entrée. Also, they stated 6 prawns for that appetizer. These were clearly not prawns, they were only medium-sized shrimp, and in no way were they prawn-size nor worth $15. I also had an issue with them not being cooked through. I know that the color of shrimp is not the best way to tell if shrimp is cooked through, but these were still somewhat transparent, and that, they should not have been. That being said, I returned the dish for further cooking, and it was returned in more of a cooked condition, but still not as cooked as I would have liked. It was tasty, however. That much, I will acknowledge. One last comment on the menu selection, while they are definitely open for lunch, the menu did not have a defined lunch section, and in fact, only offered 2 sandwiches. All other entrees were dinner type items, and priced to match. I would have preferred seeing a separate menu, or at a minimum, section on the main menu for lunch..... with lunch prices, as well. It's not fair one has to pay top dollar all day long. I just found the menu to be strange on many topics. It didn't flow, and it didn't make sense. It then caused me to become quite indecisive as to what I wanted...... it just wasn't hitting me in a good way. So, in addition to the shrimp scampi above, we ordered hummus, which I believe is a fairly easy and reliable Mediterranean dish to prepare. Unfortunately, it was completely without flavor. How is that possible? No salt? No garlic? I don't know, but it completely lacked in flavor...and then, it came with 4 pieces of pita bread, not 4 big pita rounds to equal 16 pieces, but ONE SMALL pita round cut into 4 pieces. Because we didn't like the hummus, the bread didn't even matter, but had we liked it, 4 little pieces would have had me enraged. Instead, I was more focused on the hummus with its lack of flavor. I think they realized we didn't like the hummus because the waitress made a point of telling us we were not being charged for it. That was very kind of them to do, but still, I expected yummy hummus..... they should have been able to deliver on that. Mediterranean Cooking 101. EASY. My husband ordered calamari. I don't know what specifically annoyed my husband, but he didn't want to eat it. I know the sauce was that chipotle mayo again, but as I said above, if you start mixing things up too much, the focus gets lost. Calamari is known to be eaten with cocktail sauce, perhaps marinara, and maybe some even go for tartar sauce. Regardless, whatever that sauce was, it should not be there, and yet, it was. My husband didn't care for the breading texture on the calamari, either. He let a fair amount of this dish go to waste. I tasted one and didn't like it, either. Not much flavor...... and I refused to dip it in that sauce. My husband also ordered fish tacos. He was completely disenchanted with that........ fish tasted "off," whatever that meant (he tried it, I didn't). He didn't like the chipotle sauce, and he left that entire dish just sitting...... hardly touched it. The one stellar moment of the meal was their Greek salad of all things. Very simple..... lettuce, tomato, onion, feta cheese, kalamata olives, and a wonderful dressing, which honestly, made all the difference. I loved the dressing. The vegetables were fresh, and it was my favorite part of the meal. The bottom line is this...... unless and until this restaurant figures out what its food identity is and can really hone in on that, I think they will find themselves closing their doors sooner than later. Looking for something different on the lunch circuit, we came in and were pleasantly surprised. We started with the Baba Ghanoush and pita and asked for a side of cucumbers which they served at no extra charge. It was delicious. Well spiced and the pita was perfectly warmed and soft. It held us over very well while waiting for our fresh fish. Marilyn's emphasizes fish for good reason. They also own the fresh fish market next door and boy what a difference that makes. We ordered the black cod and it was excellent! Fresh and perfectly spiced and cooked. The serving size is large enough to share. So for lunch, if you get hummus or baba ghanoush to share, you can easily share the main dish and still have enough to be full. We are fans and will be back again. Cute gem of a new place in town. Friendly staff. Clean look of the decor - very minimalist. Fresh food. You can hear the sizzle of it being cooked up to order. Loved the garlic fries (it was my cheat) and liked The flavor of the chicken gyro. My dining partner in crime had the chicken schwarma plate. He said that the salad needed more feta and they were prompt about providing more. One suggestion he made was for his plate to have hummus included with it, which another local place does and He thinks would make the dish better. The meat doesn't tend to be overly spiced which may be a good or bad thing depending on how spicy you like things. Personally I like things a little more spicy, so this was a little underwhelming in terms of spicy. However, those that don't like super spiced would probably enjoy the chicken Schwarma here better as the spices are dialed down. Kind of bummed that they had run out of the Tiramisu that is my fave. The hummus is as good as we had in Israel. Chicken Gyro Plate: What voodoo is this? Thinly sliced, juicy, juicy chicken, seasoned with pixie dust, GARLIC fries and a salad. More tzatziki? Yay!! 10/10/2018 Ordered thru Doordash (who was awesome) but I am NOT happy this time! Got ceviche with horribly stale chips. Ordered the scallop pasta for $27 per plate and it tasted just like I took pasta straight from the water and ate it. Scallops were cut super thin and at the bottom of the container sat a flavorless puddle of what I assume was the sauce made of "white wine and spices." I really wish people cared about consistency and treated every dish as though someone were gonna put it on yelp. I ordered the first couple times and gave a great review. Only issue was we were missing garlic fries, we called and they did not hesitate to bring it to us. It was worth it- these garlic fries are epic!!!!! Good food, friendly staff, homestyle food We were in a rush and we quickly stopped by for a bite before we had to get to our appointment. within seconds the waitress was at our table, took our order and throught the service she would check on us quite frequently, and when the food was ready she came back a few times after to ensure everything was exactly how we wanted. I ordered a small salad but it was very filling and very delicious. everything was super fresh. my only criticism would be to change the plastic cups. They don't do reservations but when I called ahead of time they said they would try to save us a big table and they did. I've been here before and couldn't wait to have their steamed clams again. Way overrated. I ordered the meat Kibbeh, lamb kabab plate with rice and vegetables, fish and chips with garlic fries, humus and pita bread, and tiramisu. Out of all of that, there is not one thing I would recommend. The Kibbeh was soggy. The humus was so heavily oiled it was like gravy. The pita bread was not as good as mass made off a store shelf. The fish and chips were very greasy, with almost no garlic flavor in the fries. The lamb was over cooked from the medium rare I ordered, and tough with very little flavor of marinade or meat smoke. The veggies were OK, but very ordinary, and the same for the rice--not offensive, but not delicious. The tiramisu was not traditional and served with a very thin chocolate sauce, lacking the distinctive flavors of authentic tiramisu. I ordered out, but I also looked over the restaurant and this is no place to go for "ambiance". Perhaps the seafood plate is good, but the "specials" are expensive and I know I will not be back to see if they could rescue this place in my mind. Went there for dinner on 12-8-17 at 5:45. We were seated immediately and a drink order was taken, with a food order shortly thereafter. At 30 minutes past order time, I asked what is going on and was told that the "food is cooked to order". At 45 minutes after order time, I asked the same question and got the same answer. At 55 minutes past order time, I dropped a $20 bill on the table for the drinks and told the owner, and scatterbrain waitress, that I found it amazing that they remain in business. The owner was LESS THAN APOLOGETIC when I told her we were leaving and repeated, "the food is cooked to order". Be serious, almost an hour wait to get kebobs and a salad. read more

Placed a to-go order and had people who were eating there currently bring it back home. Easy, right? Nope. When the order came home, the hummus I had ordered was missing. Called Marilyn's to inquire, they didn't pick up- but okay it was late and I guess they shut the phones off promptly at 9. Called the next day and finally got through in the evening. I spoke with Marilyn herself who assured me I would get a refund for the missing hummus. The only problem is that Marilyn doesn't know how to work the POS system in a restaurant with her name on the door, so she had to call me back. This was after I was on hold for 10 minutes while I listen to them figure out how to find a transaction and refund it. I got a call back around 8:30, I mean, I got FIVE CALLS BACK and several awkward voicemails where the representative that Marilyn threw this issue off onto started with "...hi this is.................. ... . . . ::click::" When I got home I picked up their sixth call. They allegedly refunded the entire amount of my check ($16.00 something) but they wanted me to provide them with a card number to charge me for the salad I did get. I was hesitant, because it seems like they are inept at using the pos. The waitress/hostess assured me, with zero confidence in her voice, this wouldn't be the case. I would receive a refund for the total and they would only bill me for the salad I got. Well, a week later- they took an additional $9 but HAVE NOT REFUNDED THE ORIGINAL CHECK. Before Marilyn jumps on here to yelp bully about taking it to the internet: what else should I do? No one took ownership (not even YOU and it's YOUR business), and they don't know how to work their POS. I'm not calling back to listen to a bunch of bullshit, I'll just file a charge back with my bank. Scam artists. read more

Marilyn's is awesome. We've been here 5 times now and have consistently had excellent food, great service, and an overall amazing experience. I love to try a different grilled fish special each time we go and every time it's been cooked perfectly with amazing flavors. For an even healthier option I trade out the rice for mixed vegetables and they never mind. My husband has tried a different normal item each tine we go and has lived everything! Don't forget to try their hummus too! Garlicky, smooth, and delicious! And the super fresh pita that comes with it is so good!! read more

We ordered takeout - swordfish meal and chicken kabob meal. I give it a C-. It was over seasoned and contained too much oil. It didn't taste clean. I'm sorry Marilyn but the fish was over seasoned with cheap spices and I'm not sure the grill and fryer are clean. The fries were soaked in grease. Please do better. Keep it clean and go easy on the oil. read more
