If you go in here make sure you get a written estimate. We were charged $398 to repair a 3 yo laptop. They would not tell me the parts so I looked in my computers Device Manager and determined I was way overcharged. Overall one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a repair shop. Why they don't provide a written estimate and include written instructions is beyond me? Ask yourself what a new laptop costs. Not much more that this repair. Will never go back here. read more

If Mohammad is not in the shop and you happen to encounter the so called partner,do yourself a favor and leave without explaining your problem. I recently went in and the "partner" first told me that it was probably a virus and then told me maybe I needed a new hard drive. I left and went to a repair shop in the East Bay and for $90.00 a registry problem was fixed and within 2 hours I was off and running, the computer fixed. The co-owner of Marin Computer was so impressed with telling me how busy he was that he wouldn't even take time to diagnose the problem. As bad an attitude problem as you can find. I can't comment on their actual work since my problem was unfixable due to bad water damage on my macbook retina screen, but 5 stars for their responsiveness, honesty on cost and what my options were, and for their help in figuring out what I need. One day, my 8 month old Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive just stopped spinning. Unfortunately, I had temporarily archived my entire music and photo collection there, as I had run out of room on my internal hard drive. I called Seagate since i was still in the warranty period. They were happy to replace the drive but I would lose all the data; or... i could send it to their Data Recovery service with a minimum of $750 charge to evaluate and possibly correct the problem. No guarantees. Typical charge would be more like $1500. Feeling very ripped off by the Seagate policies, I started calling around to local data recovery resources and found Marin Computer Repair. Mohammed answered the phone and offered to diagnose the problem free of charge. I made a trip over there and after about 15 minutes, he determined it was a problem with the disk enclosure's circuitry and not the hard drive. Another 15 minutes and he had my former disk in a new enclosure and working again. I decided to purchase a replacement hard drive as a safeguard since the old one was making peculiar noises. He transferred all my data for me onto the new hard drive (a 2-3 hr procedure). Total cost: Parts - 205; Labor - 85. I could not have been more satisfied with the service and the outcome! I recently returned home from my honeymoon to find that my hard drive on my mac-book pro had crapped out. After spending 2 hours at the apple store genius bar, they told me there was no hope. I brought my cheap little netbook over to Atman Computer on 4th Street in San Rafael because the touchpad mouse stopped working. The guy plugged it in, confirmed that it didn't work, and then asked for $120 to re-install the operating system. Since that's half of what I paid for the netbook a little over a year ago, I walked out. Based on yelp reviews, I then went over to Marin Computer, where the nice honest folks there took about 3 seconds to figure out that a function key had disabled the touchpad. Free of charge. I guess I'd give 3 1/2 stars if I could. I brought my fairly old (6-7yrs) Compaq desk top for virus removal, and was quoted about $ 200.- for that plus data back-up. A couple of days and phone calls from me later, I was informed that things were worse than they had looked. I consented to having the hard drive replaced and the operating system reinstalled. They charged me $350.- for everything (incl. refurbished hard drive) and it all works great. I liked both guys I met there. They did seem to know their craft, and I like supporting local small business. However, for $350.- I could have purchased a brand new comparable machine from Amazon or other big retailer and just transferred old files myself. So, for the moment I'm OK w/ not contributing to more landfill, but I don't think I'd make the same choice again. read more

My company gave me a laptop to use for my job and unfortunately the wifi wasn't working on it (it would only work when plugged into the ethernet cable). I used it for several months this way, and even the IT guy in our company was unable to resolve the issue. Then I stumbled upon Marin Computer Repair while in the area on a business trip and I was delighted that Bonom was able to solve the problem! Not only that but the service was efficient, affordable and friendly. You get much better service here than you would get at one of the big-box places like Best Buy, and better than you would get with your own company's busy IT department. I got the impression that they were working on fixing a lot of computers at once, the place was full of computers when I walked in, they clearly have a lot of customers, but they were able to manage the workload and fix it on time with no problems whatsoever. Had my daughter drop off 3 dead computers...they declared my 6 year old desktop dead on arrival (no surprise) and fixed the 2 laptops. They added anti virus, a computer cleaner, malware detection software, and an uninstaller. They saved my data (thought i would lose it on one of the laptops...was getting corrupt hard drive messages). Cleared out background applications that were slowing down my computers and weren't necessary. You have to call them...they are responsive, but they only called me to find out what problems I was having with my computers. When I called them to see how things were going, they told me what was going on and what they proposed to fix the problem. I don't remember if they told me the estimated cost, but I thought the charges were reasonable. I would use them again. read more

Had great experience with Marin Computer Repair! Had a main office pc (imac) disk drive go belly up. Not only did they stay later then their closing hours to fix my computer and reinstall the os, they managed to get critical data off my dead drive. It would have take apple days to see my pc and effect repairs!!! No joke. Try getting a service appointment at the apple store. Further, After the job they allowed me to use some of their equipment to get even more data off the dead drive that was critical to my busIness. These two jokers should not be allowed to conduct business. In addition to their arrogance, they (Mohamed and Bonom) will try to baffle you with bull and tell you pretty much whatever pops into their heads at the moment. Don't count on them telling you the same story twice. They definitely find it beneath them to answer questions or explain a problem. They replaced my hard drive without telling me beforehand which resulted in numerous problems: pirated windows setup, keyboard skipping, among others. They always had an answer to the problem and it always resulted in something I had to do which may or may not work. It was NEVER their fault. (My hard drive should never have been replace.) Everything I wanted retained from my previous computer was transferred into the top-of-the-line laptop I bought, configured just as I wanted. The mysteries of some new software I started to use when I got home were explained to me over the phone. This isn't an attitude or service I would expect if I had purchased a computer from one of the major stores or distributors. Our family has used Bonom, Mohammed and others at Marin Computer Repair successfully for over 10 years to fix our family's PC and Mac computer (IMAC, Macbook) problems. From OMG I'VE LOST ALL MY DATA; my hard drive isn't responding; I have over 400 viruses on my computer, oh, and my back up drive is infected too, to hardware issues like just updating major and minor components, or updating to a faster drive. Bonom and his crew are not only extremely knowledgeable about computers, they also really, really want to solve your computer problems without charging you an arm and a leg. They are extremely honest and forthright with what they believe your computer's problems are and are interested in teaching their customers some basics like running cleaners/anti virus software, so you don't have to keep coming back. I feel lucky a friend suggested them to me 13 years ago when my PC crashed and others said it was a lost cause but they managed to get my data off and build a new computer for me at an affordable price. With my most recent computer issue, the Apple Genius Bar and support just gave me generic suggestions that did not address at all what was really going on with my IMAC while Bonom spent "quality" time on the computer to determine what the problem was and how to fix it. Plus they are always very friendly and able to explain to a non-computer person like myself what the problem is and options to fix it. read more

Where to start? It appears to be a nice, comfortable, small "get things done" kind of business, but they bring unprofessionalism to new levels once you actually start working with them. While Mohammed is ok, I found him to be condescending, arrogant, and unaccountable. I was heading off to school and needed my computer repaired in a certain period of time - gave them plenty of time - and then had to hound them to pick it up the day before I left. Upon arrival to the shop, the work hadn't even been started, despite having had my computer for over a week. Mohammed blithely said "just give me an ninety minutes" - so, I had to go find something to do while he rushed to do the work they'd agreed to a week earlier. Ninety minutes later, he hadn't corrected the chief problem which prompted me to bring it in - had to give him another hour to work on it. Throughout all this, he was arrogant. Unbelievable. As if this weren't enough, Mohammed left a disk in my disk drive which resulted in my having to spend 2-hours on the phone with him to load all of the files back onto my computer. Later, I found that the external hard drive they sold me is worthless. Bottom line: these loafers don't deliver in a big way. You'd be much better served going elsewhere. read more

I brought my external hard drive here for data recovery because it was an easy job and other bigger companies were going to be around $1000 and I didn't think it was necessary. I was told it would take 3 days, and 1 month later I was still calling Marin Computer Repair for updates. Their communication was horrible and on multiple occasions they said they would meet me at the office and when I arrived no one was there. If you care about the content of your data recovery at all, pay the extra money and go to a reputable place. If you've ever visited the Marin Computer Repair office too, you would quickly see that it is no way to run a business - when I was there it was disorganized and there were flies all around the bathroom. I bought a brand new HP laptop, from one month on I had problems with it. Although it was under warranty HP tried not to fix it, accusing me of spilling liquid on it. After sending the laptop back and forth to HP I was at the end of my rope. I brought the laptop to Marin Computers and they immediately recognized my frustration. They took the laptop apart took digital pics, called HP and instructed them to fix my laptop ASAP. Once Marin computers was involved HP took the laptop back and it is now being fixed. Customer warning. My computer repair experience of 2010 was truly nightmarish, leaving me wondering if they have any skills as claimed, or what. My newish computer with 2 hard drives was frozen with one of those fake internet security software bugs. (Since then I learned how to get rid of these myself. ) My computer is a business tool and fortunately for me, I backed up files 2 weeks prior, including over 5000 artwork images. For some unknown reason, Bonom removed the 2nd back up hard drive and allegedly wiped out both hard drives in order to remove the virus. When I returned for pick up, I was shocked to find nothing, no files, no programs, email contacts, operating system, nada, zero files, After waiting for hours while they searched their computers, repeated return visits, Bonom's 2 week vacation, file loss, a month went by. During return visits, they loaded other customers' files repeatedly. A month later, after I took my desktop away and restored my programs, they called that they found my files. A helper went to the shop with a portable hard drive and loaded my alleged files, plus other people's.. What I found: thousands of useless word DOCS without dates or titles, 40,000 jgps of bad home made porno and web design belonging to someone else, my unlabelled jpgs mixed up with other customer's files, unopenable files and folders, a useless mess. What I lost: a month of work, business related word docs, a few dozen work related photos, work related favorites files, business emails, etc. Customers beware of loss. read more

Had a Mac Book Pro that I purchased back in 2003 and was able to keep it up and running thanks to Marin Computers with only a few minor upgrades. About a couple weeks ago I decided it was time to retire the old and go with a newer refurbished MacBook so I once again decided to pay a visit to MC. Banom (the owner) asked me what my specific needs were and helped me make the best economical choice for my upgrade. I started out by looking online for a computer repair shop in marin because my laptop had failed due to heating problems. At first i was skeptical because of some unsatisfied reviews on yelp but to be completely honest YOU NEED TO GO AND SEE FOR YOURSELF WHAT GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ADVICE YOU CAN GET. After getting over the fact that my laptop was done for i initially started looking for a trade in laptop that i could use for standard level gaming and video editing. There werent any laptops really up to those standards soo.....we decided to build a gaming desktop instead. For only $350 i am amazed at the service and PC trade off that i got. My PC is twice as fast and more capable than my HP laptop ever was. I also got a few PC building tips on the side too.
