I have worked with Marin County Arborists for 30 years. Mackenzie, Ken, Rob and Mauro are the best in the business. For years they have taken care of my 150 year old oak. Mid February my beautiful healthy oak decided it could no longer stand tall and it came crashing through my roof. Luckily the damage was only to the home. Ken and Rob came out the next day. They had tears in their eyes when they saw the tree. Ken brought in a crew and a tremendous crane to get to work to take the tree off of my house. They were fabulous. Very professional and worked like acrobats hanging from ropes and swinging in the air with major tree pieces. They are wonderful in every way. Marin County Arborists came highly recommended by another tree service. They responded very quickly and gave us an appointment within the week. They showed up right on time. Robert came in and introduced himself and reassured my 99 year old mom that they had everything under control and that the job would go smoothly. The crew showed up on time with crane and chipper and four guys. They were there for 5 hours and had the project of taking down a 60 ft Palm covered in thick ivy done very smoothly! Watching them was like watching a finely choreographed take down! They were respectful of my moms property and worked and cleaned up as they went along. Our landlord hired these amazing men. They were here multiple days for trees so high that you cannot see the bottom or the top from inside my place. Safety is key! There were separate color teams and I watched them climb the trees (with chain saws hanging on belts), communicate with each other and always having each other in line of vision and hearing. Lots of ropes, pulleys and those cleat-like things on their shoes worked wonders to get into our trees and really thin out the extra branches, bark and debris. At one point, one of the tree trimmers was way up high and the wind started to blow. He was up top swaying in the breeze. I don't know how they do it! Brave and talented team. Robert was the man in charge and was very organized, safe with his team and knowledgeable. They hauled away the limbs and leaves and did a super clean up job. Excellent work! ABSOLUTELY THE BEST ARBORISTS EVER. These guys can diagnose internal tree damage, while figuring out how to safely cut, remove and haul away debris while keeping the tree healthy and safe, In our case the trees in question were not ours, They were simply neglected by the folks who were supposed to be keeping them "healthy." The crew is so knowledgable, they were able to explain to the neighbors why cutting them back was the best for the trees. Happily we were able to stay out of the process. I was confident that these experts were doing everything by the book. Arborists are about what is best for the tree, and what you are allowed to do by law. I would never ever use anyone else. Excellent Skill - Excellent Service The team from Marin County Arborists (Shawn, Jerry, Justiniano and Cosmo) arrived on time, with the right equipment, ready to start. Reviewed the job with Jerry and away they went. View trimming, fruit tree pruning and misc pruning. All cut cuttings were immediately picked up and shredded; the entire area swept and blown clean. Marin County Arborists did a great job on our large redwood removal. Their bid came in the lowest out of the 4 bids we got, and Ken and all the crew (office and field) were really easy to work with. The field crew left the site cleaner than it was before they got there! They were recommended by a neighbor who used them to cable a large co-dominant redwood, and my neighbor had rave reviews as well. read more

The team that came out did a great job and worked hard. The management processes of the company, however, leave a lot to be desired. I spent a long time explaining to the estimator, who came out first, exactly what was needed. From this, he wrote up a short, error-filled bid. I corrected the errors and sent the bid back. The team who showed up had the erroneous bid and had never been briefed by the estimator on what exactly needed to be done. So, I had to spend another hour explaining to them what was really needed and supervising them for hours. Eventually I had to leave and they managed to leave without finishing one of the projects properly. Since they had not been briefed properly, they did not have the right personnel or equipment when they first showed up. The office neither called the day before to confirm the appointment nor afterwards to quality check. Disappointing. read more

Mauro's crew worked miracles on my property. They opened up our view of Mt. Tam without whacking off the top of our very old oak tree. The view from our breakfast table in the attached photo formerly was nothing but dense tree branches. Mauro and his assistant were very sensitive to this majestic old tree. They also pruned all our other trees so nicely that you can't tell they were cut back; they just look healthier and less bushy now. Can't recommend this crew highly enough. Decided to go with MCA after a not so favorable experience with a different company. Had them remove several bay trees from our yard. From the first phone call, they were great. They worked with me on several different scenarios (we have a lot of bay trees), giving several different quotes for free. Once we decided on which trees to remove they were prompt, on time and left the yard as clean as possible. They were more expensive than some of the other tree services, but you get what you pay for. read more

I was so impressed with Marin County Arborists. We had a monster cypress tree lose a branch last year and narrowly missed crashing down on our bedroom. Ken came out and provided options for safety and discussed long-term liability and outlook on tree health. We decided to remove the tree and other diseased trees along a ditch that was very hard to go into and out of. Ken's crew showed up early, and were all set to go by 8am. They were pleasant, professional, respectful of our and neighbors properties and they amazingly got it done in one day. The other proposals I got were way more expensive and they estimated 2-3 days to complete the job. It was a long loud day but man am I glad it was wrapped up by 6pm. We have had trees we thought needed to be taken out but he has told us they can be saved. The crew are always friendly, professional, do a great job and clean everything up behind them. One day I was shocked to discover a man on the deck outside of my bedroom. He was from Marin County Arborists (MCA) and he was working on my neighbors tree. He came into my yard and climbed up onto my second floor deck without my knowledge or permission. He had also appropriated a ladder of mine for his own use. I called MCA and they said they would apologize, but never did. I cannot comment on the legality of their behavior, but I can say that they were completely discourteous and unprofessional. I strongly recommend that you avoid doing business with them. read more

Everything went great! From the estimate, to the arrival of what I thought of as an "arborist SWAT team" they were efficient, kind, safe, and fun to watch at work. They took time to explain things to me and my young daughter, and constantly checked to make sure we both were safely out of the way when cutting. I emailed Marin County Arborists through their website10 days ago with a specific request for date palm tree trimming. I received a generic reply from Jason Sutton telling me to call them, so I did. All I can assume is that they don't do palm trees. Jason Sutton promised me an arborist would call me, but 10 days later, no-one has called. I'm suspicious about the glowing reviews--the main reason I tried this company. My experience was disappointing and they did not do what they promised--that an arborist 'with palm tree experience' would return my call. I was even given a name of the person. I would have appreciated a call back, even if it was a 'sorry, we don't have this expertise'. If you have palm trees, this is probably not the company for you. Jason Sutton seemed reluctant when i called up, and even commented about trimming palm trees not being a good idea! The tree gods were kindly looking down on me after a truly awful experience with a different tree company (arbor tree company in Novato). We sought out 3 quotes from 3 different tree places in Marin for a job requiring one removal of a very tall dead madrone, as well as trimming branches from some very tall trees. Marin County Arborists are punctual and extremely professional. They gave us a very reasonable quote, did a fantastic job, and the clean-up was immaculate. They cut the dead tree into firewood at no extra cost, and Bobby who came out with his crew took time to answer any additional questions. The folks at the office who schedule appoints are likewise friendly and professional. I have recommended them to several neighbors, and no question we will go with them again in the future. We had a large dead pine tree that, unfortunately, had to come down along with some other work for the view and fire safety. They were the most reasonable quote and had worked with us on small jobs before so they were the obvious choice for us, two neighbors and a neighborhood problem. This was a big job. One crew was here for two full days and a second crew was here for at least half a day. From the first phone call through the end of the job, nothing but professional people. The Arborist, Louie, was great at helping us figure out what we we did and didn't need to do, both to clean up and protect the living trees. The people in the office - made all the scheduling painless and they had to work with three separate homeowners. Could not ask for more. The crews, wow! They were right on time, great work ethic (the 100+' dead pine tree was down in less than 2 hours), they were careful with the rest of the yard, always checking to make sure we were happy and the cleanup was so good I needed to see it to believe they were here. We really couldn't have asked for a better experience. No complaints from any of the neighbors - which I really appreciate. They'll do all our tree work in the future (and we have a ton of trees). I hired MCA a couple of years ago to prune three trees. The actual arborist came over to assess the job and quote the work. On the day of the work, he showed up with his crew then left! The marginally "skilled" labor with whom I could barrier communicate with proceeded to chop one tree on half. I am still staring at the remnant hack job and I still regret ever calling them. Proceed with caution and ask who will be supervising the work because if all you need are guys with chainsaws, you can find them cheaper read more

Louie (the arborist at MCA) recently gave me several alernatives for a large silver maple that had been losing limbs. From the first contact they were friendly and professional. Unfortunately the tree was in very poor condition and the best choice was to have it removed. MCA's proposal was very fair and they scheduled the removal for the next day. The crew arrived exactly when promised, did a great job of removing the tree - never blocking the street for more than a few minutes and never hitting power lines, fences, roofs or damaging other landscaping. They even raked and cleaned up while doing the job. I had a pile of scrap branches that they also collected and chipped for a very reasonable price, even though it had not been part of the original estimate. This job started out fine with an experienced, capable crew & arborist. Three bay trees and a diseased oak were scheduled to be taken down in two days. But it turned out to be a three day job. No one has returned for day three to finish the job. It's been a week. There is a diseased oak, thirty feet high, no limbs, at the top of my property. When I phoned the office on day three to ask why no crew had arrived, I was told the project manager had inspected the site & the job was finished. And could I pay the invoice? I sent two pictures to the office, called twice more and requested a call back. Nothing. When my third call was answered, I was told they'd put me on the schedule, but no date was given. What? I'm very disappointed and a more than a little apprehensive that this diseased towering stump may fall on the house. Crew & arborist: five stars. Customer service/office: negative star. read more
