Absolutely horrendous service, as bad as if not worse than the so-called "European" Waxing chain…read more I went for a brazilian (partial, but they call it that) on April 28 and expected not be handled like a cashcow by the woman half-assing it. As I was being treated by a Colombian immigrant, I was reluctant to tell her just how bad a job she was doing (going very fast), causing me too much pain for the thin, not fully grown out hair I had. I was surprised to be hurting as much as I did given the better wax, but it wasn't the wax but the person and the hurried method. I was being treated to a quick and shoddy job, yet the pre-set tip was expected. (I still regret I paid her the full tip out of pity rather than for the job done.) Within 24 hours I started feeling tingling painful sensations in my crotch and hair was growing out. The pain soon started turning to bumbs and itching, and for the first time in 45 years I had a bumpy and irritated skin. The hair had all been broken rather than pulled out. It is now less than a month, and the hair is nearly an inch long. When waxing is properly done, it takes more a month for the hair to start growing out. I called the location to compain a 8 days later, and was told that their manager would contact me. It's now two weeks or more after that and I was never contacted. Do yourselves a favor and boycott these chains that exploit workers who then mishandle clients. You can get your painful waxes and impersonal treatments where you can feel dehumanized like a factory animal at Chinese joints for less money. You don't want the same shitty experience for a lot more money. I understand the staff are poorly trained, incompetent, and underpaid, but if I relied on people's tips I'd try not to damage their skin. I'm in my 40s and have more than two decades of experience being waxed in many countries in Europe (from eastern to western) and in NYC, and NYC is by far the worst experience every single time, regardless of how fancy they're supposed to be because they charge you exorbitantly. I get waxed in France multiple times a year for a fraction and barely feel the effect of hair being pulled, because they're well trained professionals and take pride in a job well done.

Let's be real--Brazilians are never exactly fun--but she managed to make it as painless as possible. I also struggle a lot with ingrown hairs, even though I exfoliate regularly, and she's the first person to give me real, actionable advice beyond the usual "just use an African exfoliating net." Game changer! Laura made sure I was comfortable the entire time and even checked before tweezing--something I personally don't mind, but I know others might appreciate the heads-up. As for the location, this Uni K was fine--not as updated as some others I've been to (like the ones in Kip's Bay or Williamsburg). It's not the closest spot to me, but I'll 100% be back to see Laura. Knowing that I wanted to have a photofacial while vacationing in NYC, I found DLK through…read moreLifebooker and decided to try out their Ultrasmooth option -- a photo rejuvenation session with a glycolic peel. They had a really great deal on Lifebooker and very strong Yelp reviews, so I thought it couldn't be TOO bad. Ha! I should have been tipped off when I tried to call and get more information about the treatment multiple times but no one ever answered during their operating hours. I went in for the treatment and was told that they were running behind... I told them that I had to leave by 3:45 at the absolute latest, which both ladies working there insisted was plenty of time. About 30 minutes after my appointment time, I am taken to the room to get ready. Although the technician explains that I need to take everything off up top and use the cover-up, she comes back in 30 seconds later without any warning, while I'm in the middle of changing! So much for privacy. Once I laid down to start the treatment, it did get somewhat relaxing. The peel came first, which was a bit painful on one part of my face. Then the photofacial -- don't waste your money (It isn't clear what kind of laser they use from their website -- but this is NOT IPL -- apparently it is a "cold laser"... which does not work like the IPL photofacial I have had in the past, where you can actually see a difference in your skin). I left with slightly softer skin (probably due to the moisturizer she applied at the end), but literally I saw ZERO results from this. The peel just caused my skin to flake in some areas, but no change in the complexion or anything. I hate thinking about the money I completely wasted on this. The icing on the cake -- what really made me go from a two start review to a one star review -- was the way that my time table was completely disregarded. I was getting a little worried about the time, so I asked to make sure that she kept an eye out when the treatment was close to over. The response was "oops... it's 3:55..." and when I was rushing to run out the door AFTER 4PM, she said "oh well, it's not like your THAT late". Excuse me? Last time I checked, I was the customer, and I meant what I said when I needed to leave BY 3:45. I made that clear much earlier, but she obviously didn't find it to be important.

I should say that I have relatively great skin (in others' eyes), but I KNEW that I had more than a moment's worth of extractions--as I cleaned my facial clock at home following my treatment--which should have been readily viewable (and removable) by the esthetician who used a lighted magnifying loop. The livingroom-esque feel of the place and the micro-sized, closet-esque treatment rooms didn't really bother me as I'm much more about the service than the environmental aesthetics (especially when my eyes are closed mos of the time), but I really don't feel that I received my money's worth (even as I was, retrospectively, armed with a lifebooker deal). BOTTOM LINE: The DLK SIgnature Treatment facial would likely be great for those who don't need (or care about) extractions. The photolight technology and treatment were questionable at best and, in my opinion, not worth the added cost. I'd recommend looking elsewhere for more powerful and proven age spot lightening and skin firming results (perhaps with an IPL or similar laser?).
