We always get pastries from here, however I will be looking for a new place to get cakes from. I had a cake made for my sons baptism and had to do all of the informations over the phone. When we picked up the cake they only slightly opened the box and we didn't realize that the "o" was really and "L". Oh well we got a good laugh, then the cross decoration looked like a 5 year old did it and just scribbled on it. Still didn't care too much, until we cut into it and it was completely the wrong cake. It was supposed to be cannoli filling and it was fruit. Like other people have said, nothing can be done now but I would recommend going over and over and over the details. I ordered a red velvet cake with cannoli filling for my birthday here. I will say the cake was beautifully decorated. But the cake itself was unbelievably dry and it tasted like food dye. I am convinced they dyed this cake and it's not a authentic red velvet, despite what the owner says. It was disgusting and almost inedible. I paid extra for red velvet also and that is why I am so disgusted. I called the store and spoke to the owner. I can't believe how rude he was! I was trying to explain the situation and he kept yelling at me and talking over me. He admitted to me that they used Pillsbury cake mix for their cakes. I think that is ridiculous considering I spent $35 on a cake I could have made at home for under $5. It probably would have came out better too! He offered to give me a refund but still that's not the point. You can't bandage everything up with a refund. I tried to tell him what was wrong so he could fix it, but couldn't listen. It wasn't worth the aggravation to me. I've been a loyal customer here for over 10 years. I've had a good amount birthday cakes from here too and never have I felt so disrespected. The minute I walked in the joint I knew I was in love. I mean, this was it. This was the real deal. For me, there could be no turning back. Everywhere I looked I was surrounded by beautiful, warm, colorful pastries--and in all shapes and sizes. Mario's really let me down today. I've gotten cakes from them several times in the past few years and they have been amazing. Today however we had ordered a cake for my daughter's first birthday who absolutely adores Oreo so we ordered Oreo filling. When my mom went to go pick up the cake this morning it wasn't at all the design we had asked for but the party was starting in an hour and couldn't really do anything about it. Whatever it is what it is. Then we cut the cake it was fruit filling not at all Oreo how I asked! I hate fruit filling and apparently so did a lot of my guests because now I have almost a whole cake sitting in my fridge that no one wants. I'm so disappointed what a waste of money. read more

This is a great bakery and it is always clean, bright and packed with so many amazing cakes, pies, cookies, breads and pastries. I have been shopping here for many years - even before they remodeled - and they are the best Italian bakery on Long Island. I was there on Easter Sunday and got their sesame cookies, pignoli cookies, hazelnut biscotti, mini cannolis, and sfogliatelle and they were all amazing, as usual. Their carrot cake (made in strips) used to be great too but I haven't bought one of those in a long time. I've never ordered a birthday or occasion cake here since for me, those must all be made by Whistle Stop in Oceanside but I've been buying the cookies mentioned above for a long time. I'm sad to see so many bad reviews about the custom cakes and the poor customer service people experienced but the counter people I've always dealt with each of the times I've been there are always all so sweet and friendly. read more

I've heard mixed reviews about this bakery and hate bakery hunting for a cake. I recently ordered a cake for a baby shower and boy was I disappointed. The cake had a hint of freezer in flavor, not to mention the flavor itself was no where to be found. The cake was supposed to be chocolate cake with French creme and strawberries. The creme was not French creme and was moderate in moistness. The extremely thick layer of fondant ruined the cake, I understand it was probably needed for the design but it's something that should have been noted before the cake was ordered. The fondest was basically half an inch in thickness possibly more but ruined the taste. Finally overall the cake was extremely over priced for what it was, definitely not worth the price. I probably won't give this place another chance and this cake was given enough notice so time was not an issue. The only reason I give them two stars is for design and readiness but I will most likely not be returning here. I included a pic of the nice design to show their work. Edited: A second attempt was made on another cake and I will say this one was A LOT better. Although no special design was used the flavors definitely did meet demands and was definitely worth it. I personally do see future purchases and business with this bakery. I do appreciate the owner personally reaching out and exceeding expectations. Although I did get a complete refund ( which I absolutely deserved due to bakery's major error) the owner was so rude and condescending, talking over me so loudly that I could barely get a word in. When I left there the other day I felt so abused by this arrogant man. I will never return.... a woman was in the shop while I was there " discussing" situation with the owner, she came over to my car after as I was just sitting in it after leaving the bakery trying to breathe again. I went into Mario's Bakery in Oceanside near my house at 12:15 pm on May 13, 2021. I knew I had $45 in my purse because I had just checked. I was holding a $20 bill while the young woman who was assisting me was boxing up the pastries. When she was done, I handed her the $20 bill. She walked to the register on the other side of the long counter, and came back a minute later to tell me how much it was. I told her that I had already given her $20 and that I was just waiting for my change. She became rude saying "why would I steal from you." I checked all my pockets and the floor around me and no $20 bill. I checked my purse which now had only $25 in it. This young woman became hostile when I questioned her again, so I gave her a second $20 bill because I needed the pastries for an event. When she gave me my change this time, I asked her to check near the register for the $20, but she just walked away in a huff and started helping another customer. I have no doubt that she stole from me and I will not go back there again. I hate being taken advantage of. read more

Still my favorite bakery on Long Island, and the Tiarmisu cake is still wonderful, as are their cookies and the bread looks great too. The remodel of the store has made it even more appealing to walk into and since my initial review in 2007, they have begun taking credit cards (probably for a few years now). I thank them for letting me in the other night when I got there on a Saturday at 7:15, but the doors were locked. I explained to the manager that the Google listing showed them closing at 8pm, but he told me they recently changed their hours to 7pm. When I got home I also looked on their website where it also still shows 8pm (he claimed it had already been updated on the website). In either case I appreciate them letting me in. read more

Costumer service atrocious. Staff acted like they were doing me a favor providing me with baked goods. I asked for a receipt from the cashier and was handed a slip of paper with a random amount. When I explained I was purchasing for work and needed and itemized receipt, she spent almost 10 minutes at the register because everything she rang up came out to a different amount (less) than what she charged me in the first place. When she handed me the receipt final, it has individual entries but all day miscellaneous. I would for sure watch your money when you are in here. I also I asked for 24 cannoli shells and received 20, but the shopgirl made a point of telling me she had counted out 24. read more

I wanted to buy a cheesecake to celebrate a birthday. I didn't want to drive out to the cheesecake factory so I opted to try a local bakery 3 towns away. Best bakery I've ever been to! I used to be a "supermarket bakery" type but this place has made a believer of me. Everything is good and fresh. The girls behind the counter are friendly and very helpful, the prices are incredibly reasonable (for this day & age) and the selection is huge. I would say the bread has made me into a "bread lover"...and this is coming from someone who thought good bread came in a plastic sleeve w/a twisty tie. I ordered a cake for my gender reveal and the decoration was absolutely beautiful, I'm not going to lie but the cake was dried and nasty, the sample they gave us was not what they gave us. On top that they didn't even do as we asked. The cake was nasty I could've done it at home if it was gona be nasty for the $275 I paid. Basically paid for the fondent but the cake was disgusting.
