Excellent empanadas that are baked, not fried. My favorites are the spinach and cheese and queso and sweet plantain. Since they left Westbury a few years ago we found them at local farmers markets but recently took the trip to Oceanside. Black beans and rice are also tasty. Visit Date: February 20, 2022 I came here for what I hope was my last day in a battle of overeating I've recently had. It's the last addictive battle I'm currently facing right now. I had gotten two tacos from taco bell prior to here because I was worried 2 empanadas and a side of rice and beans wouldn't be enough, when everything was more than enough and I ended up hurting my stomach from overeating which is a feeling I don't want to have anymore if I can start to be vigilant. When I came in my uber eats pick up order was canceled but they were happy to put together what I ordered pretty quickly. I had the vegan mac n' cheese empanda, the vegan black bean empanada and a side of rice and beans. Plus I got a peanut butter cupcake I ate later on that night. Everything was delicious I haven't had an empanada in so long and it's nice that there's a place fairly close to my house and my job where I can stop sometimes for vegan ones. I guess if this was hopefully my last overeat (like my last drink was 2 years and 3 months ago) it was at least an awesome meal to have it happen with. Today March 8th 2023 is International Women's History Day and I would like to take a moment to shoutout Jessy's Pastries. They are an amazing local pastry shop owned and operated by Jessy Nahmias. She grew up in Peru and moved to NYC at the age of 17, where she was exposed to all the great American desserts. Her pastries brings to Oceanside the best sweets of her childhood and also her favorites from her new home. Speaking of new favorites, I popped into the bakery for the first time last week on my birthday and was so glad I did! I was craving a cannoli and they just so happened to have a batch of vanilla cannolis freshly baked out of the oven. I took them home (so that I could dunk them in my coffee without anyone seeing) and they were sooo delicious. They have expanded the space (and the prices), so a box of 10 empanadas is now $42, used to be $25 when they first open, I get it, everything goes up in price. The service could be better, though. When I stopped by last night to pick up my order of 20 empanadas, which I placed online an hour before, there was a customer in front of me who could not make up his mind and instead of the worker saying to him "Give me one second" and help me because clearly, when someone places an order online an hour ago, it means they are in a rush, he was just standing there, waiting till that customer decided, while my boxes, all ready and hot, were just a few steps away. read more

It's likely deja voux as I've seen Jessy's place before and as I think about it now, I may be recalling a YELP dream, my very first. It's coming back to me now -- I recall thinking then saying to someone in my dream "I am horrified at the stuff he writes, it's pure muck & I think it's ignoble and I can not and will not be on and cordial terms with someone whose writing I despise". And I do believe I was referring to myself but either way, I know I've seen Jessy's Pastries so that's certainly reason enough to reverse rig and throw down some coinage. I have this thing (who am I kidding, I have many "things") which is to say that I read ever notice announcment taped or hung before I enter and continue to read them all before I address anyone. And sometimes the workers are addressing me so I raise a slow and polite one and a half finger "just one moment please" hand sign to about mud face height. And I read that 'all empanadas are baked and made from scratch w!o any additives or preservatives and are baked fresh daily and -- there is an Easter egg hunt coming up in Eisenhower Park next weekend." Two for $7.00 mix and match with chicken and beef seemed the logical first time bet and the counter woman explained in a non scatagorical way the popularity of the other offering. Buffalo Chicken, Queso with Sweet Plantain Mac and Cheese, you get the point, the options are tremendous. There is no eating inside, it's all take out but feel comfortable in that there is no wait time save previous customers. Once pulled from the case, set inside the cutest little box, a perfect fit with your salsa verde and roja snuggled up inside with napkins and a menu. Be careful of an aggressive first bite as inside temps will bite you back and leave you wishing you had approached with more softness, I bit some where in-between so fortunately, no damage was done. read more

The workers were very nice and wore their masks properly, but the food just wasn't that great. The empanadas were filled pretty well but just didn't taste great. (Chicken, Beef & Cheddar, Queso & Sweet Plantains, BBQ Chicken with Roasted Potatoes & Corn.) The empanadas were crisp, warm and delicious! You can tell that they're baked fresh. They are SO good! The chicken was my favorite, though they were all very good. They have an array of vegan options as well. (Black bean, Mac & cheese, soy chorizo & plantains, Roasted Veggies with Pineapple.) Their sides are all vegan. They only sent one small ramekin of each sauce- I wish they sent more. I only had enough sauce for a few empanadas. Other than that- no complaints. A great find on a day when empanada cravings got me driving for about half hour. The place was small but there's a small parking lot and street parking is ample. The excitement filled me as a variety of options overflowed. The beef and cheddar immediately caught my eye. We picked five more, waited for two minutes, and started opening the box of warm empanadas. The beef and cheddar was an instant favorite. Spinach and feta reminded me of the ones that I get from Italian pizzerias. Buffalo chicken was okay, but I would not get it again. I passed this place by a few days ago while going shopping and made up up my mind to give them a try the next time I was in the area. I had that opportunity last Saturday. I have to give these women props. 1st of all the place is super clean. It's not large, just two tables for eating in but the space looks inviting and is well laid out, the staff is very friendly and pleasant by the way. I've mentioned before that I'm a Jersey boy and I've lived for years in Hudson County giving me the chance to experience some fantastic Colombian, Dominican, Puerto Rican and Cuban eats. Compared to those places, Jessy's ain't bad at all. These aren't the deep fried, overstuffed empanadas that you'd get in the hood but baked and kinda healthy versions. Yay!!! They've got vegan options! I had had had to try. I had their soy chorizo, black bean and plantain empanadas. Ordered their vegan chocolate bar and woo! All for it. Have gotten their vegan red velvet and brownies, also phenomenal. Love their quinoa salad as it's def made very Peruvian. Love this place and definitely ordering again. Sooooo tasty. Glad I saw their "Vegan Options" sign in their window as I was driving by. The vegan ones I had were AWESOME! I had the 'sausage' and peppers and the beefless one. They were both really different but really good. The two vegetarians I was with really enjoyed the 4 different vegetarian ones they tried - with heir favorite, they said, being the one with soy chorizo and plantain. I can't wait to be back in the area again and try some more. PLUS - I hear they have another location in Westbury - for next time I am out that way... The sauces were too spicy for me (being a known wuss in that regard) but my friends gobbled the "delicious" sauces up. Cute place (although little) mostly made for take-away - but we did eat-in! Super impressed by this place. I recently had a potluck appetizer night with some friends, didn't have the time to cook anything, yet wanted to bring something different. I remembered reading about this place in Newsday a while back and decided to give it a shot. I went in on Friday to place my order and was a little conflicted about how many empanadas to order. The lovely owner told me that you can always freeze any extras, so I decided to order fifty appetizer size empanadas. I got the beef, chicken, black bean, and soy chorizo with plantains. I picked them up on Saturday and they were ready to go, with clear instructions on how to heat them up and how to identify which empanada is which. It also came with two delicious types of dipping sauce. The empanadas were the first to go at the potluck, and everyone was raving about how good they were. People even told me that they typically don't like this type of food, but that that were shocked and really enjoyed these. So based on my opinion and twenty of my friends, I'd say this place is worthy of a visit. read more

Soooo good. The vegan black bean empanada is amazing (my go-to). The other vegan empanadas are really good as well. I feel like the rice and beans seems like it would be such a plain side dish, but Jessie's makes it in a way that's really flavorful and kinda addicting for such a simple dish. Empanadas are tasty, especially the beef and chicken.....however, the service at the Westbury location is awful. We have been there on 3 occasions and the folks behind the counter barely have a pulse. No friendly greeting as you enter or when you leave....they all seem annoyed to be at work. The second loss of a star is attributed to the fact that despite buying 10 empanadas, they are stingy with their green sauce - the woman charged us $4 more ($2 ea) for 2 small sauces......couldn't believe that they only give u 2 small sauces for purchasing 10 empanadas. I would think you would just give condiment sauces to paying customers, not charge them more than an actual empanada. Something tells me that despite turning out good tasting empanadas this location will close due to poor customer service and unfriendly business practice (i.e. charging for sauce that accompanies the empanadas). read more

Last time I went here I didn't have the best experience. And I always do. I drive about 40 mins just to come here so it kinda like I don't expect any issues. At least I don't want to. The girl at the desk - wait this review is months old! I just realized I didn't leave one! Like I was saying before the girl who was taking the orders at the front had a I hate my life attitude. Honestly I wondered who she was related to because she doesn't give the friendly customer ready face. This isnt the let's hire her to speak to customers kinda person. I understand most females have RBF/ a serious look but even when I spoke to her it seemed she couldn't wait to get me out so she couldn't deal with me. I remember being indecisive about my order and wanted to ask a few questions but I was turned off. No patiences, no smile.. she was giving the other worker more of a welcoming response then me. She was asking why another worker wasn't there, where they were and the schedule. This bakery is super small so idk why the owner had 5 workers there. I didn't even see her. She's wasting her money. Two people would of did the job.. just saying. I hate to even leave a review like this but I was really upset when I left and as you see months later still annoyed by it. I'm a business owner as well so I would want to know if something is broken so I can fix it. Also personally- this may rub some people the wrong way but I think she had facial piercings and colorful hair. Idk but I'd expect that to be toned down a little at least for work.
