What used to be a go-to place for the last over 40 years has declined greatly. There is too much competition to keep going to a place who sells napoleons with dry filo dough and old cupcakes. I'm not clear on why a business would sell or even keep expired food. Cupcakes are supposed to be light, fluffy and moist. This was hard as a brick. Why would you sell this to a customer? When an 8 year old won't even eat it...... Should I also mention taking cash and working the cash register and then touching food without washing hands or gloves? Stopped in to get a few treats for the weekend. The young lady behind the counter was very friendly, helpful and personable. Everything was very good as usual. I got a couple of brownies which were on sale, some raspberry cronuts, a chaos cookie (which has a little bit of everything in it), a s'mores cookie, a rainbow bar and a tri color mousse cup. Another item I saw but didn't get was the decadence torte, which is chocolate mousse with no cake layers to it. Something I've been looking for, for a while but haven't had success until now. I came here a few times in the past few months and I was disappointed. So much to choose from but the staff seem unfriendly. The premade cakes in the display are not priced and when you ask questions the staff seem bothered. The bakery is very mediocre but convenient when you live nearby. I picked up a Nutella cake for my husbands bday and a napoleon and pecan bar. They go heavy on the almond flavor so the cake was a bit overpowering - I didn't like the cake at all. The next night we had more than half the cake left and we decided to have a little bit of each dessert I bought the day before (the napolien piece and pecan bar and cake) keep in mind nothing was left out, it was refrigerated right away. Well we both spit out the napolien it was spoiled and the cake tasted rancid also. The pecan bar was ok but c'mon for all that money it didn't last more than one night? Makes me think these items were not fresh. Any other bday cake I've had lasts a few days after cutting into it. I give it two stars because their donuts and some treats are good but after this last visit I won't be back even though I live close by and it was convenient. I ordered a few items including the chocolate crossiant, cheese danish and it was so good I went back and ordered some more items to take home for my family. Riesterer's Bakery closes promptly at 6pm. This said I was 5 minutes away and called to ask if they would wait a few minute. The girl asked the manager and they did. When I got there the woman at the door said, we are closed. I was allowed in but I felt that there was rather great annoyance about it. I was able to pick from what they still had out and not put away. I bought 13 dollars worth of snacks being a cupcake, Custard Éclair and a piece of Napoleon. I was glad they had waited and if they said no I probably wouldn't have been pleased though I would have understood. What I did find however is - that the bakery has been there since 1930. There are photos on a board (see pix) showing changes through the time. I was impressed. I tasted the cupcake and custard Éclair. The chocolate was good yet light almost like a syrup flavor. If I happened to be in the area I might stop by again. Though I don't plan to be in that area any time soon. read more

I hate to write a review like this. My husband has been coming to this bakery for more than 30 years and he introduced me to this place almost as long as that. We used to drive in from Brooklyn (45 minute ride and on the belt parkway no less) just to get some fresh breads and sweet treats. Now that we live a bit closer, we try to come more often. We last came in a few weeks ago, in early morning and things were VERY different from what we always loved. For starters, the older woman who waited on us was not someone to have serving people in a bakery. We have had this woman serve us on other visits and she is not the friendliest of people. We felt as if we were bothering her. As for the bakery items we purchased, everything was AWFUL. Here is what we ordered: A bunch of Kaiser rolls - they were more than just one day old. They were quite stale. We bought a black n white cookie - stale (which again, we used to drive 45 minutes for this. That is how good they were!), a few double donuts - all the chocolate 'broke off' the donut because it was old and an apple turnover - also tasted very old and stale. The worse part was an Italian bread we purchased. As we were getting into our car, I felt the end of the bread and it was hard as a rock. Ok. sometimes, the ends are a little hard but then I felt the rest of the bread. It was so hard like a baseball bat! I'm not exaggerating! We go back into the store and handed the bread back to the woman who just helped us less than 5 minutes before. I said "I'm not taking this, its hard as a rock." She gave me a nasty scowl and asked if I wanted a refund. I said "Yes." She asked me for my receipt and I replied "I didn't take a receipt." She asked ME how much it was and I said "I have no idea because I never ask about their prices because I always loved their breads and cakes, I didn't care how much they cost. UNTIL THIS DAY. I can't believe they would even sell such an item to anyone!!! It was truly awful and I am not even sure if they disposed of the bread or if they put it back on their shelf to be sold to someone else (and hoping they didn't notice until they were far enough away)!! We will not be returning. This was our absolute favorite bakery and now, sadly, we need to find a new one!! read more

My sister purchased a Strawberry Short Cake from Riesterer's Bakery for my birthday. I have been using this bakery for many years and found they always use fresh ingredients. Unfortunately, this was not to be this time. Instead of fresh strawberries on top and a nice strawberry filling inside with a delicious cream covering the cake, there was a large dollop of strawberry jam plopped in the middle of the cake, with the same strawberry jam in between the layers, there were no fresh strawberries and the cream tasted as if it was made from powdered cream. We ordered a customized cake for an event. The staff was extremely patient and helpful during the tasting a designing part of the process. They were able to deliver the cake for us. A wonderful family owned bakery in the town of West Hempstead. With the same family name, this place has been on my list to check out for a long time and since I was in NY, decided to make a pilgrimage on the Long Island Rail road to sample their wares. We even got to say hello to the proprietor, who was so very kind, and we loaded up some goodies to take back for a Riesterer family gathering in Wisconsin (where my branch is from). For a small bakery they have a really wide variety of items from breads and rolls to cookies cakes and pastries. Wish I lived closer, love these type of places for their high-quality and artistry. Definitely worth a visit whether you are coming from near or far. I came over 1,000 miles just to check it out, and I was very glad that I did! read more

This bakery has been providing special occasion cakes for my friends and family since I could walk. Growing up in Nassau County, this was my mother's Go to bakery. Now as an adult, there's not much that wows me here. They serve delicious pastries. But I would not recommend for a beautifully designed cake. I have always had the strawberry shortcake sheet cake from here. Very light. Fresh strawberry filling. Whipped icing. A delicious cake. My only issue with this bakery is that the appearance of the cakes do not match the taste. I attempted to design my baby shower sheet cake, by sitting down with someone and sketching out the ideas. The cake which was tasty but just wasn't the prettiest cake. The design of the baby onesie was great. The drawings of the candy on the onesie. Not so much. My shower was candyland themed. As in the 90's board game. The doodles that were drawn on my cake just wasn't nice. A family member picked up the cake order and at that time, it was too late to complain. Thank God it was a photo cake to take away from all the terrible doodles on the cake. All in all. It was tasty. Just not eye candy. read more

There are many things I like about Riesterer's like the European Tudor style look of the building, plenty of off street parking, it's a fairly large bakery with a huge selection of many different type of baked goods, comfortable seating and a generally friendly staff. I will confess that this isn't my favorite bakery, but it is the closest to me. Also having such a large selection means that they can't do everything all that great - such as the cinnamon rolls, which I found a bit on the dry side. I prefer mine with more cinnamony gooeyness. I also was burned with a bland, stale Easter cake shaped like cocunutty egg when I first moved to the area - another hazard of having such a large selection that not everything moves off the shelves. Lately, I have been giving them another shot and find they do make an excellent Boston Creme donut that is bursting with vanilla custard - this has been my go to treat. My boss is a big fan of the Linzer Tart from here as well. I also feel they have reasonable prices for most things. There are more items I would like to try (I read the apple strudel is a must have, but any other recommendations are welcome) and who knows? Perhaps this will become a favorite spot more than a convenient one for me. Unlike other reviews I don't think "everything is excellent" here from my past experiences. Frankly I am at 3 stars, but I'm going with 4 stars, because I'm an optimist and hopeful that if you know the right things to order then they really shine just be sure to ask if it is fresh! read more

Wow! This European style bakery has it all and I'm surprised I have not been here sooner. If you are ever in this area you have to go because this is a 5 star bakery. I was recommend to this bakery by a friend so I figured I'd try it out when I was visiting him. He told me they had one of the best apple strudels so he called them to hold it for us because he said they sell out of it. When I got there I didn't expect to see such a large bakery with a nice cozy seating area. There was a line when we got there and it smelt like pastry heaven inside. I picked up the apple strudel and wanted something else and I asked the red head girl who worked there if she liked anything else and she said the mini cheesecake was one of her favorites so I was sold and got that too. After I got the goodies, I sat down and had a coffee and ate the pastries. The apple strudel was unlike any strudel I have had before it was doughy and soft and pure deliciousness (not flakey) and the mini cheesecake was one of the best cheesecakes I have ever had, it just melted in your mouth. In addition when I was there I couldn't believe this one red head girl was running the counter in this large bakery with a long line all with a large smile :) and being able to upsell me on another pastry in the process. Called here a few weeks ago on my dog's birthday, to see if they had any birthday cakes for dogs. Fortunately for me, they happened to have just one last dog cake, which I asked them to please hold for me. I went to pick up the cake, and they were nice enough to include a birthday message on it for my dog. The cake was 3-tiered, and was made of doggy biscuits. In addition to the cake, they also told me they had happy birthday dog bone biscuits, which I also decided to get. I brought everything home, and the dog loved every bit of it. I would recommend this place to anyone on Long Island looking to buy dog birthday cakes. Needless to say, they are a REGULAR bakery and they do have a large selection of cakes, desserts, pastries, cookies, etc. However, I have yet to try any of their baked goods, but will be back one day to try them. read more

This is just reviewing 2 items I tried. The diamond rainbow cookie was pretty good. 4/5. The jelly donut was not good. It was better than Dunkin donuts but the dough had little flavor and the jelly did not taste like any fruit in particular. It was red so I assume it was supposed to be raspberry. I was aware of Riesterer's Bakery but never thought to go there before because it was several miles away. However, when I was making my daughter's bridal shower, she asked if I could get a cake or cupcakes that had succulents on them (she loves them). I asked a couple of other bakeries, but they either couldn't do it (not their thing) or were so far away that it would've been impractical. I contacted them online, sent a photo of what I wanted, and they came back with a price (we had cupcakes), which was reasonable. They were gorgeous, plus they tasted fabulous! I had given up on this place years ago after several unsatisfactory experiences. Stopped in today, Thanksgiving, for treats for kids - chocolate turkeys and cupcakes. So, I also get jelly donuts and crumb buns for a breakfast treat. The crumb buns are stale. Dry and stale. If you aren't going to bake fresh for the day thats fine but then throw out the items from earlier in the week. Im guessing these weren't even from yesterday. I go to a BAKERY for fresh baked items not stale crap. A bakery should have high quality standards, I could have done better at Stop and Shop. In the garbage they went after one small tasteless bite. What a joke. The last time I gave up on this place was due to nearly empty jelly donuts that if I remember correctly were also stale. No way the original owners are still here.
