This place was one of my favorites but had to make this review. We ordered 3 cocteles De Camaron and where great. But I had a lunch size fish filet combo and it was disappointing. Fish felt rubbery and I could not eat it. I've never had this bad experience with them after being long time customer of Mariscos El Pulpo. Thanks to the waitress that was kind to remove the fish meal from my ticket. I think I will give this restaurant a break for a while and then make an updated review. But for now because of the food ..rice to dry and beans a little not tasteful and fish not cooked right I had to give a 3 star only. Sorry. read more

How I ended up in Oxnard, that's a whole different story. But I am here with my family who is visiting and I'm hungry. I see what looks like to be a renovated Pizza Hut Mexican restaurant and pull right in. We were waited upon immediately with chips and salsa and drinks. The salsa was amazing. I ordered the steak tacos...it was fantastic, everything was fresh...authentic...and fast. I dont know how many times I will frequent here only because I don't find myself driving down there often, but if you are in the area or driving through as we were I would definitely recommend stopping here for some great Mexican food. and PS even inside it looks like a renovated Pizza Hut....yummm :) read more

I come here for 2 things, and those 2 things are shrimp cocktails and their micheladas. Im not saying that anything else isn't good but i have never been disappointed with my my 2 favorite things. Their shrimp cocktails are extremely tasty and they are extremely generous with the shrimp portions. Now their micheladas are extremely good and you cant beat the price. Ive had them at several restaurants including Cabo, El Dorado, El Chilito, Lo Mejor de Jalisco and El Pescador to name a few but this one is my favorite by far! Did i mention they are only 5.50? First time here right off the back it's not a good area but don't be quick to judge on that. Noise level is LOUD (screaming & crying kids) not a bother as we have one child, but probably would be of your on a date. After seeing that they had remodeled the building my husband and I went on a Sunday afternoon. It was surprisingly slow. We walked in and awkwardly waited to be seated while workers walked past us without acknowledging us. There was a waitress behind the front register who looked at us in a bad way and asked what we where waiting for. I told her we where waiting to be seated and she didn't even bother to walk us to our table, she instead pointed to a table and said sit over there. After reading Brandon S. review I decided that I must try Mariscos El Pulpo. I drive by this restaurant almost every other day, and always wanted to stop in, seeing as I am a ceviche freak, I roped my friend Nate into lunch. I had high hopes as I sat down, and I promptly ordered a Modelo. The chips and salsa soon arrived and while tasty, it was a little too runny for me. I ordered 2 ceviche tostadas and one carne asada taco. My buddy ordered chicken nachos. ( I know...its a seafood restaurant!) The Ceviche comes piled high on a crispy tostada. It is a mixture of fish, tomatoes, onion, and cilantro. The flavor was good, although they used a little too much lemon. Not my favorite Ceviche, so the search must continue. The carne asada taco was just bad, with chunky tomatoes covered in a mild salsa. I am sure that other items are better, and I should have had the shrimp cocktail or tried the garlic shrimp. I loved this place! I've driven by here a million times. (I grew up on the next block and my family still lives there) But I never ate here before tonight. Everything was .fresh and delicious.I had a small shrimp and octopus cocktail and a mixed seafood tostada. The shrimp cocktail was big with plump shrimp and nice sized pieces of octopus. The flavors were fantastic. My tostada had shrimp, octopus, scallops and everything was super fresh The service was great and my server was very nice. I was looking forward to my cocktail shrimp that was place TO GO over the phone, i specifically told them no tomatoes or avocado but after knocking that over at home that was the first thing that i noticed. Decided to place another other this time send my husband, apparently no one speaks english, so he just ended up paying $26 for a cocktail shrimp, of course there was some mix up on the sizes which they should of been more clear about because no way was that a serving for one person! Also, it would have been great if the order was correct the second time, instead it was the same thing, plus almost every shrimp had the shell on them. There are very few places that have ceviche the way I like it and this is one of those places. If you enjoy lemony ceviche and taste delish! You must try. The portion in big. I always order one and split it with my better half. Add some tapatio and YUM! The pork chops are delicious as well. Cooked well and rice beans, salad and gucamole are yumm! Food was bomb, service was friendly, place was upgraded from the last time we came. I ordered the mar y Tierra plate my girl ordered the ceviche de camaron tostada and the pescado tostada. Everything was equally delicious and the winning star of the night was the ceviche de pescado tostada. We gobbled it down so fast because of how good it was. It's on the lemony side so if you are not keen on lemon then this isn't the plate for you. They repainted the outside but the inside has the same tables and chairs from years ago. They also added a patio to enjoy outside . It was constantly busy with traffic coming to pick up and the place was the perfect amount of being packed but not packed enough that the wait was very long. Everything down to the basic beans and rice, is delicious. We make the treck every now and again from the end of north Oxnard to this place for just the food. It's always packed to perfection. Our favorite dish is Camarones a la Diabla. Their salsa can be better but that's just for chips. Sea food is always fresh. We have never in all the years dined in we always do take out. So I decided on my birthday that I would satisfy a craving for some oysters and whole fried fish... I figured Oxnard should deliver with a good Mariscos place, and we decided on Marisco Pulpo. The prices are good. 12$ for 12 oysters is great, and the oysters were very good. Second we had a a fish and a shrimp ceviche. Both of these were also good and were really huge portion-wise. As for the main course, I had the whole fried tilapia. I indended to order the whole fried tilapia with the garlic sauce, but I think the language barrier may have hindered that attempt and I ended up with a plain deep fried fish. The fish was fine, I had me heard set on snapper, but all they serve is tilapia. It was a bit overcooked but what you'd expect. The beans and rice were a real let-down. Really bland refried beans with melted cheese and rice that you can tell had been sitting around and had lost its "fluff". Also, another thumbs down for non-homemade tortillas. Overall, the servers were friendly and the food was decent, however I'm holding out hope that there's a much better mariscos place lurking somewhere in Oxnard. read more

The waitresses have improved coming more often to attend you. Maybe because I went on a slow day. Coming from central Mexico where we don't have an ocean, mariscos (sea food) tends to represent a type of food where you go for a special occasion. My dad loves to eat at El Pulpo, which specializes in Mexican sea food. We tend to go there for his b-day, Mom's B-day and other random days. One of the reasons I think my dad loves going there is because of the oysters he gets for the appetizers ( I should try them next time I go) . The food is not amazing good, I like to order "Camarones al Mojo de Ajo" (shrimp sated in garlic), they are decent. The plate comes with bell peppers, beans and rice. Why is not as good as it could be, you know, I came to realize that when it comes to fresh produce you can actually taste it, so you can immediately taste the bell peppers and make the conclusion that they are not as fresh as they could be. I get frustrated with restaurants in Oxnard and their lack of fresh produce, there is simply no excuse for us, I mean, Ventura County in general is a hub for agriculture; I should taste what I see out in the fields. Their shrimp soup that they serve for appetizer is also decent, not amazing good. I know my dad and mom love to order the "pescado planchado" which I think it translate to stomped fish, they seem to enjoy it. Well my dad always insists in eating here when we go out, and the looks of the crowd they do not seem to agree with me, so don't take this review to heart, maybe you should go and check it out, the prices are not bad at all, go when it's hot and drink a beer, they have Cerveza Bohemia which I like. The décor of the inside is Mexican seaside villa, comfortable, it can get crowded on the weekends, however the wait is no more than 20 minutes. read more
