I was craving fish tacos in a bad way and was cruising through Nampa when previous Yelp reviews guided me to this gem of a place. Totally unassuming from the outside, this place is a "blink and you'll miss it" location but you most definitely want to find Mariscos El Viejon! The homemade salsa and refried beans with the crispy, fresh tortilla chips are a much welcome and delicious introduction to the family run establishment. Even though they charge for refills, it's most definitely worth it. Important to note the friendly and caring service from start to finish. The chicken burrito (we had it wet, with enchilada sauce and melted cheese on top) was HUGE and worth every cent. The cheese, rice, beans and chicken were flavorful, fresh and wasn't lost in the sea of sauce. Husband kept saying that the sauce was different tasting and when I had a bite I started laughing...it was because he's never had authentic homemade sauce before, obviously! You could taste the chili powder and other flavors and that's what made it different. As for my fish tacos, I wanted so badly to love them but they were a tad underwhelming which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. The fish was fresh and soft even though fried, but flavorless even though covered in rich batter. Even with cilantro and onions, the sour cream on top snuffed out the overall flavor. Thank goodness we had some extra salsa...put that in there and the tacos were bumped up a notch. Overall a very nice experience and wouldn't mind checking out other things on the menu next time I'm in the area. Priced well and service was great. read more

SOOO GOOOD! We got the fish tacos and quesabirra tacos. The birra tacos are very big so two was enough for my husband. Chips, salsa, AND refried beans come for free as an appetizer with one free refill. The chips were still warm and tasted very fresh and the refried beans were so good that I ate them on it's own after we finished the chips!! Just got home we had quesabirria and marlin tacos both were outstanding! We've been frequenting there for the last 2 years always had great food, very inexpensive, and the waitresses have all been very friendly, knowledgable, attentive. We used to go to Tecate Mexico almost every month this is as close as we've seen to being excellent and authentic. What a great experience. Based a referral from a new friends, we took another couple with us to dinner last night. Arriving about 5:30 on a Sunday night we found the place almost full. My wife had the camarones costa Azul. I had the filete empanizado. The other couple shared a chicken fajita dish. The dishes were fantastic. Wonderfully seasoned. Well presented. Great Portion for quesabirria however does not actually taste like birria, more like meat with cheese on a tortilla. Definitely better options in Nampa for cheaper pricing. This place is known between hispanics I know for having amazing seafood and I agree completely. It's their specialty. I think their karaoke should have specific hours as I was fine with it my mother was not and was bothered by it. We left a bit early due to this. Service was okay, waited a while to get our checks. Sometimes being a contrarian has its rewards. Such is the case for a recent visit to Mariscos El Viejon in Nampa. While they have an extensive seafood menu and a great bar, it was the Birria Tacos that got my attention. They started my visit with the regular chips and salsa, but also included a warm bean dip - always nice to be surprised by hospitality. I ordered a draft Modelo and got a frozen giant mug of beer ($7.50) which reminded me of my three decades in Mexico. Again it is the small touches of quality and sensitivity to pleasing the customer that characterizes an authentic Mexican restaurant. The table service was excellent and I got to chat with the bartender, Chris, about his experiences in the area. Lots of big screen TV's and traditional Mexican ballads were playing softly in the dining room. As for the birria tacos, you can see for yourself what monster tacos they are. They came with a side cup of the broth for dipping or spreading on the tacos. I chose the ones with queso and the cheese was oowee gooey inside the shell like a great pizza cheese. Since the tacos are fried the cheese makes all the difference. Give yourself a treat and try Mariscos El Viejon. Explore the menu more than I did and get richly rewarded. read more

The food is pretty good. The place is always busy but the servers do the best they can to keep up, constantly hustling. I will note that the food takes a long time, so be prepared to wait. It's a great exercise on being patient since they make every dish from scratch which is why it takes time but the results are pretty good. read more

When we arrived there was a musician singing/ playing to just one table of 6 that had birthday party. He played and sang very loud the whole time we were there. Could not have conversation at all without shouting. Ordered draft beer and when she brought it, was a very large stein. I asked if there was smaller one and she said yes, but it was too late to change. She should have asked what size when I ordered. My wife does not like beans so wanted some greens to substitute for them but wanted the included rice. When it came there were a few cucumber slices but no rice and in the end was charged extra for a salad. My chile relleno was mostly cheese, could not taste the chile. This was my second time coming here. I like to post on the second visit to better understand the environment. One thing I do have to warn everyone about is, the moment you walk in it does feel a little intimidating. They do take a while to greet and you're left standing at the front. One thing I didn't like is the fact they ran out of SALSA, mind blowing. We ordered "7 mares" which on both occasions took a more than 30 minutes to arrive at our table. The michelada does have some inconsistencies ( I did get the same beer on both occasions). Three stars because I believe this place has potential to be better. We had an amazing dinner here. Fabulous Mexican with a seafood twist. Some of the most authentic and unique food we've had in a long time. You will not leave hungry portions are large and delish. We ordered 5 main dishes for 4 adults and three kids and ate family style so we could all try some of everything so glad we did. This place is the shiznit (is this still a cool word)? I have to admit, every time I come here, I am greeted, given delicious chips, salsa (spicy on request), and beans to start. I ALWAYS get the QuesaBirria Tacos! I'll never eat a different taco other than this ever again. I have to tell you, it's hot, it's crunchy, it's authentic, cheesy, packed with tons of beef and flavor, and more importantly, it makes you want to keep coming back for more! Additionally, the Consome sauce that you dip the QuesaBirria tacos in adds the cherry on top for me. Lastly, the staff is very friendly. I HIGHLY recommend this place. read more

Sadly, the food quality has slipped some here over the past 15 months and I can no longer give this restaurant a five star review. We had a light meal of tacos and my wife would not even finish her shrimp tacos. I had the Taco Governador, a fancy shrimp taco and the Tacos de Pescado, two fried Tilapia fish tacos. My wife asked for the basic shrimp taco as described in the menu with cilantro and onions, although it came out with cabbage and cream sauce as well and had to be sent back. The shrimp has its own red hot sauce but the problem is that the shrimp is not prepared and cooked fresh. It is actually a salad shrimp that comes precooked and diced, but when heated up it becomes rubbery. It smelled fishy as well, a sign that the shrimp is old. The fish tacos were decent although a bit over-fried and dark. They did provide a special red sauce that significantly enhanced the fish tacos taste - it was excellent but I don't think a good dish should be dependent upon a special sauce. I had a house marguerita was a bit disappointed but it was reasonably priced at $8. There is an extensive liquor selection and a separate bar at this restaurant. This cuisine is fairly unique in the Treasure Valley but I was disappointed with our seafood tacos. I hope that the other entrees have remained just as good as they were 15 months ago. On the positive side the décor has been updated and is much more attractive now. read more

This place is by far one of the best places I have had Quesabirria tacos! Also they are the biggest I have ever seen so if your looking for big portions this is the place to be! Comes with the consommé which is the dipping sauce. You wont be disappointed. The service was also great from being greeted at the door to the recommendation of drinks I wish I would have gotten our waitresses name. Also they have authentic live music playing!
