Probably one of the best marisco (fish) places in the city! This place is such a hidden gem! I go to this restaurant often because of their proximity to my job and their consistently great service and delicious food. Every time I go, I order something different and have yet to be disappointed. Last night my friend was wanting fish tacos and wanted to go to a very popular taco joint in Wicker Park which I am not a fan of, so I recommend we come to La Costa, and she was down. It's been a while since I've had a meal that made me so happy during and post-meal. The joy my wife and I experienced here quite possibly made me love her even more. Something about a nice Mexican restaurant with upbeat cha cha music and buttery seafood that gets you going. This place is amazing, easily top 3 meal I've had all year. The portions are larger than you can imagine, it's at least two hefty meals. When my wife and I go back we will probably split one dish. We got the camarones plate Nayarit style, which was a sweet tomato sauce with delicious butter and garlic, mild spicy. That sauce was great on the shrimp, rice, and bread that it comes with. The shrimp seemed never ending, I swear there were 50 little guys on one plate alone. We also got the pina la costa, which was rice, salad, garlic bread, noodles, mussels, crab, shrimp, scallops, octopus all served in a half pineapple and with a similar Nayarit sauce. The crab and mussels were the best seafoods in here. You cannot go wrong with those two dishes. The seafood is high quality and the mishmash of food was pure heaven. The perfect marsicos dive. The free ceviche with chips is very good, the margaritas are large and a little too sour but they for sure had some liquor in them. The fish filet with garlic sauce is really good. The garlic sauce is really garlicky and it had some nice shrimp floating in it. I even liked the rice. My partner enjoyed the langistinos with nayarit. The seaoned fries are remarkably good. The salad is just lettuce, no dressing. The drink menu is worn out like crazy but that's what you get at dives. Not crowded on a Tuesday night! We came here for a birthday party with about 14 people and it was no problem for the staff to manage with only one waitress! They also gave us a tequila shot at the end for the bday boy! This place is an experience, with the giant portions and creative plates. We had so many people that we got to order and try a bit of everything. From a presentation perspective, the molcajetes are really cool because come in a steaming clay pot. There are also dishes that come in a pineapple or coconut! Our favorite flavor-wise was the pulpo. The Nayarit sauce is also good. The fries are delicious!!!! Get more of those if you can! This is the first time I've had the WORST customer service at this location! my kids had to get up and asked for a cups of water... the waitress was constantly on her phone and didn't bother coming to our table to ask if we needed anything else or if we wanted another drink! Starting with the atmosphere when you first walk in it feels like an authentic seafood place, the server was prompt in getting our drinks. I ordered a margarita and I have to say it was delicious fresh and it had just the right amount of alcohol. Next, the best part, the food.. so delicious it melted in my mouth I devoured it and I highly recommend it, it was the stuffed coconut.. the combination of the taste is to me hard to pull off but it was just the right amount of everything. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because we were a party of about 9 and the food came out separately with about 10 to 5 minutes in between each time they brought a plate or two. Holy food. After reading the reviews, I knew I was going to get a lot of food, but I think I have enough leftovers to last me the next two days! The entrees come with garlic bread, salad (some cucumbers and tomatoes and orange slices), and cajun fries. It is a lot of food! I got the filet of fish stuffed with shrimp, scallops, and octopus. Atmosphere is very laid back. Service was excellent. The food was ok for me, but I know others loved their meals. Delicious guacamole but my fish tasted a little too fishy. They were accompanied with whole round fried tortillas. I wasn't too hungry, so my partner ordered a red snapper fillet and a guac to share. My husbands food was great, a steak dish don't remember the name. The fish ceviche on the table was delicious, the shrimp empanadas were mouthwatering and decadent. Margaritas were really good, server was attentive and friendly. It was only 3 stars bc of my dish. Love ceviche, particularly shrimp. Always looking for a local place. Ordered it here, it was grey some areas on the chunks looked almost "cooked" mostly grey though. Wasn't going to say anything, but my husband brought it to the servers attention. I'm not sure we were really on the same page as I was corrected ceviche is uncooked. I understand that the raw fish is marinated in the lime juices and the acids "cures"/"cooks" the fish. Growing up my neighbor and good friend was Hispanic her mom would call me for dinner 3-4 days a week. In all the years (25-30 years) I've made or eaten ceviche the shrimp is pinkish not translucent and definitely not grey when served. It tasted good but a little concerned bc from my understanding (if not mistaken) grey shrimp is undercooked and eating it should be avoided unless a sushi grade but not sure that grade even applies to shrimp. I took the rest Home and added lime, will check tomorrow to see if it's ready. Bc I really think it was served too soon. I hope I'm wrong bc I enjoyed everything else. I guess we just wait and see... Following day update: subtracted a star. I really hope the cooks/owner/staff care enough to see this. Before serving your patrons please be sure the food is ready to be consumed. Shrimp should be pink not grey. After squeezing 2 limes and marinating overnight sure enough now the ceviche is "cooked". New picture posted. As a result won't be back. A real shame too because really liked the flavor of all their food. Seriously hope I don't get sick, as it takes 48-72 hours to feel food poisoning. Also to the server CHECK if a consumer is concerned their food was not ready to be eaten. When they address it, please do not try to correct them. Major types of food poisoning that can result from eating raw or undercooked fish and shellfish include Salmonella and Vibrio vulnificus. For raw shellfish you specifically need to know about the risk for Vibrio infections. Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that lives in warm seawater and is not caused by pollution. 100% Legit Mexican seafood! I am so glad that La Costa opened the second location! This is one of my favorite Mexican seafood places in the city, especially the camarones estilo de Nayarit or diabla. The shrimp seem endless in the camarones platters. I can also recommend the piña rellena as being deeelish! Also, my favorite appetizer is the aguacate fabulosa (avocado with shrimp). The original location at Belmont and Central is great too, but the waits on the weekend were becoming too much. I enjoy being one of the only non-Hispanics there, plus the live music provides a great experience. That location has a full bar too. We had the Empanadas de Camarón (shrimp empanadas), Filete Perla (steamed fish stuffed with shrimp, octopus and crab) and Molcajete Mar y Tera (steak, chorizo and shrimp in spicy red sauce). This is such a yummy seafood spot ! We walked in around 7:30 pm and asked for a table for 3 and were told it would be a 20 min wait . We didn't mind as the restaurant itself takes no reservations so there's always a chance that there will be a wait time. Once seated we took a look at the drink menu , well we took turns as they only have 1 drink menu per table. I was surprised that the restaurant didn't have a scan code for the entire menu but was still using its original plastic menus from pre covid . For drinks we had the corona margarita and the Spanish sangrias . These drinks are huge and affordable and they don't skimp on the alcohol . The sangria was twice the size of my margarita ! For appetizers they give a complimentary ceviche to every table and we also ordered the shrimp empanadas. For an entree 2 of us had the pina a la costa which is basically a half pineapple stuffed with mussels , octopus, shrimp , oysters , crab meat, prawns and crab legs !
