We were going to the renaissance fair, but it was going to rain so we were please to stop into Charley's. We will have to come back when it's nice out to enjoy the patio area with games, fire pits, and much more to enjoy with large and small groups of friends or coworkers. The bartender was super friendly (she just celebrated a birthday) and it seemed like there were many regulars at the bar. Wow... I don't even know where to start with Charley's in Lake Hopatcong because everything about my visit was just that good. First off, a huge shoutout to Stephanie--she was amazing! Super friendly, attentive, and she even made sure our portions were split so we could all share without any hassle. That little touch really made the night. We kicked things off with the pierogies with bacon and caramelized onions, and let me tell you... they're to die for. Crispy, soft, savory, smoky--basically everything you want in comfort food. Then we dove into the dumplings and the legendary 181 wings in white wine, garlic, and thyme sauce. Hands down some of the best wings I've ever had--cooked to absolute perfection and packed with flavor. The sauce? I'd bottle it up if I could. For mains, we went all in: the chicken parm, a juicy and flavorful house burger, and the chicken with penne alla vodka. Each dish was top-notch, and you could taste the care that went into every bite. Honestly, the food was so good I barely took any pictures... which for me is saying a lot. Sometimes you just have to live in the moment and enjoy it, and that's exactly what happened here. I can't recommend Charley's enough. If you're anywhere near Lake Hopatcong, make the trip. Had to make a trip to Lake Hopatcong and a few people had told me that Charley's Tavern is a place to grab a really solid burger while in the area. Stopped in with that in mind and ended up going a different route, but my buddy got the burger and said it was excellent. Our bartender (Stephanie) told me that while their burgers were killer, she preferred the breaded chicken sandwich. Okay Stephanie, I hear you loud and clear. They have Landshark on tap which is nice, managed to keep myself to only three of those haha. Another bonus was they offer tater tots as a side. Nearly anywhere I go that offers tots, I get tots. Got a side of honey mustard and dipped the tots in them, solid. The chicken sandwich I got was the special, not the menu one so it differed slightly. This one had bacon, BBQ sauce, Provolone, Lettuce, and Tomato. This was a MASSIVE sandwich. A huge, freshly breaded and fried, chicken cutlet was cut in half to match the shape of the bun as well as possible. I genuinely wasn't able to get every item on the sandwich in a single bite until about halfway through the sandwich, it was wild. The cutlets were definitely fresh and fried well. If I had to give a criticism, the cutlet by itself didn't have as much flavor as I would hope. When you added all the other elements to the chicken though, it was a delicious bite. We used to go to Village Saloon on Wednesdays for $2 Bud Light night, and enjoy their wings. The issue was crowd - way too many people and the musical acts were just SO loud in an awful acoustic space. Waiting for spot at the bar was just not appealing, so my buddy recommended Charley's Tavern a bit down the road. I had been there for drinks, but hadn't really eaten anything. Turns out, Wednesday is "Wing night" with 75 cent wings all night, as many as you wish to order. They also have PBR on draft - $2.50 a pint. Nice!! I can go there and get enough wings for dinner, a few cold ones, and the bill is $20 or under. Now THAT is value in 2024. The wings are perfectly cooked, served with ample blue cheese and they'll gladly provide more if requested. Super tasty sauce and there are plenty of flavor options. This is a winner for sure, we go every Wednesday night. Brought my wife a few weeks back and she ordered a burger that was just perfectly cooked and full of juice and flavor. Sometimes, you don't even want to post these things to keep the secret as tight as possible, but the Charley's staff needs to be recognized. This is a quaint little establishment that most people have probably driven by a hundred times without giving it a second thought .. wow .. are they missing out on an amazing spot. The tavern is mostly a huge bar that wraps around the entire interior with some tables available for larger groups and a very nice room with a Wall fireplace right outside to accommodate more patrons as well as a large outdoor space with fire pits, lawn games, a blow up movie screen and gazebo for outdoor music. This place just keeps on getting better and better. The wait staff could not have been friendlier and was always available when needed. The food we ordered came out quickly and was the hit of the night. Everything was amazing, delicious and plentiful. It was Pub grub elevated to another level and at very reasonable prices. Awesome for what it is! Local bar with pretty simple eats. Had the Charley chips which were so fresh and yummy. I had a chicken Caesar salad that was listed to have Romain but I got ice berg :/ and husband got a cheesesteak that was pretty good but could have used more of the meat/cheese/pepper filling. The child got chicken tenders and fries-no complaints. Atmosphere was great! The place recently was redone :) I recommend this place for sure! And prices are reasonable! This is one of my favorite spots for several reasons. Firstly, every other Wednesday they have an open mic night with the wonderful duo Krissie & Mike. They're a lot of fun to listen to in their own right, and very friendly, accommodating and encouraging to anybody who wants to play and sing. Makes for a great time for both listeners and participants, adds greatly to the charm of the place. The bartenders are great - friendly, fun to talk with, and of course efficient at getting you your drinks. I definitely like the look and layout of the place, plus it has a friendly crowd. The food is good here as well. I highly recommend this place on any day of the week, and that much more so when Krissie & Mike are playing. Go and enjoy! read more

If I could give half a star I would. My wife and I were looking for a place to have a drink and lunch. We decided to venture out to the Lake Hopatcong area. It was a great day for a ride and we were enjoying the day. We got to Charley's and walked inside. First off, the place is small. A long bar, some seating inside and outside. We first sat down at a high top and it was apparent that no one was coming to serve us. We found 2 seats at the bar and noticed 1 barmaid hustling. It took her a few minutes to acknowledge us, we ordered drinks and asked for a menu. We got our drinks and waited a good 10 minutes, still no menu. She passed by us at least 5 or 6 times. I finally got a menu from the guy next to me that had just ordered. She then took the order of the guy on the other side of my wife and said she would be right with us. The fellow next to me got his food - sliders and 3 beers (They were a group of 3). Another 5 minutes we get our order in - fried raviolis & pub pretzels (we got small plates because it was very apparent that this was a local's bar). So the guy to my right finishes his meal and reorders 3 beers and 3 shots, The guy next to my wife is eating, on his 2nd beer and 2nd shot. We still have nothing, not even anyone asking if we need a second drink. All in total, we waited 45 minutes for our 2 small plates. The raviolis were harder than expected and bland. If it wasn't for the marinara sauce, they would have no taste at all. The pretzels were good with the cheese sauce. 2 fat sticks. Bottom line is we spent an hour and 1/2, 2 small plates, 1 beer, 1 wine and no acknowledgement. It took me 5 minutes to flag her down for the check. If you live in the Lake Hopatcong area, you are welcomed to be there. Be a stranger who wants to find a place that might be in an area you ride, Charley's is not it. We were very discouraged while we were there and spoke about it when we left. It is very obvious that this is a local establishment. To end, we went to The Grasshopper in Newfoundland where we always get a great meal, caring staff, and great prices. We will not be back to Charley's as they left a bad taste in our mouths. read more

To start, I have lived in Sparta for the last 4 years. I have heard plenty of compliments about charley's so I decided to try for myself. The place is a literal hole in the wall. Barley any seating inside the main bar. So we sat in the side tent with heat and a TV. We waited about 10 minutes to be greeted, then a bartender poked her head out of a side window. She apologized for not seeing us. She came, I asked for a recommendation on a sandwich. She stated she was a vegetarian and did not eat the two choices I asked about. We got our drinks, pretty fast. Then the food came out about 25 min later. The runner who brought the food, did not give us flatware, ketchup, salt and pepper or napkins. I asked her for these things and she rolled her eyes. After she asked another employee to get it for us, she walked away. The food I have to say was the best part of the experience. The bartender did not check on us for another 15 minutes ( 2 minute check back). Then we got another round. After this a table of three ladies sat in front of us, literally waited 20 minutes before i told them they will wait. Then I told the ladies to knock on the side window, so they can get served. They did and a purple haird server who looked more like a bar patron then an employee came and took their order. Long story short, Charley's in one of a few games in town. Someone opens up with better service, and pays attention to service basics ..they are done. read more

First of all, I was waiting for 10 minutes at the bar to order a drink. A group of four people came up to the bar 10 minutes after I did, and the bartender proceeded to take their orders before me. All I said was excuse me I've been here waiting for 10 minutes prior to the group of people and she proceeded to say I will work my way down the bar until I get to you so I told her why don't you start with Myself since I was there first and work your way down to them. Apparently one of the gentleman must've been a regular so she shouted the individual steam out and said excuse me, Rich I have to take this person's order before you. So I ordered a bucket of beers and a green tea for my brothers wife, and she had to ridicule me for ordering one green tea in front of the whole bar. Additionally, she gave me the wrong beer so I had to return it and the green tea that I ordered was a shot and not a drink as I requested. She was very rude and obnoxious and I overheard her say to one of the people at the bar that.I prefer local customers when my friends band was playing and we brought a lot of people and a lot of business to the bar. My brother decides to go into order a second round, and he received a bucket of drinks with water that looked like it was brown, apparently doing it on purpose. She said hey, why don't you smile a little bit life isn't too bad and she proceeded to say that she will smile when she retires. This woman was definitely in the wrong industry, and we found out that she was also the bar manager as well. Totally unprofessional and I highly recommend staying clear of this establishment. If I could review this place, with zero stars I would, but I could not. Face lift sure didn't help the service and whoever they have at the front door every weekend makes me want to pick up drinking alone at home (GUY ALMOST TOOK MY LICENSE AWAY BECAUSE HE THOUGHT IT WAS FAKE AND I DROVE TO THE PLACE, so how would I drive home if you didn't even serve me?) They offer food that's more than "bar-food" per say, like pasta and chicken, but it's a DIVE and you'll have to order at the bar anyway (even though there's dining tables) The only thing I can remotely recommend is buying a drink and sitting outside in the summer. Don't know why I've tried so many times to make it right, but I'm not coming back. There's better places with more room, better service, and overall a better atmosphere. I honestly wish I could even think of the place without getting so worked up and pissed off. Do yourself a favor and get a lobotomy first. read more

This place is less than five driving minutes from the lake so it's very accessible after a long day. It's very clean and the staff is friendly. The appetizers are hot and delicious. I had the jalapeño poppers stuffed with cream cheese and the corn fritters (sooo good). I came on a Sunday and the appetizers were $5 which was super cheap. I ordered a sangria which was okay and The Tavern sandwich. The sandwich was good however some parts of the chicken were very overlooked making it hard to chew. The bartender claire was super friendly and made sure we were taken care of. I had the cheesesteak which was excellent and the quesadillas which were just ok. My husband and our friends have frequented this establishment for almost 2 years. It is a great local pub with live music, great food, and relaxing atmosphere outside with fire pits, corn hole, and large screen TV to watch the game. The staff is friendly and hard working. Our bartender was Shaye and she was amazing. She was so sweet and pleasant and we never had to wait for a drink refill. The kitchen was backed up because there was a glitch in their system so it took awhile to get our food and she was very apologetic and kept us updated frequently.
