On a dreary, chilly Saturday afternoon in March, stopping in at the cozy bar at Chesapeake Tavern was just what my wife and I were looking for. This was our first time here and we really liked the place. Our bartender was very friendly and provided info on the building being over 200 years old and new ownership taking over 2 years ago. I started off with a Kane IPA, my wife had a Toasted Almond. The beer was easy, but he did a great job making her drink. We each had a bowl of broccoli cheddar soup, then we shared the Maryland Crab Nachos. The soup was ok, but those nachos were fantastic! So different from anything we've had. Our first visit to this great restaurant which is also a local favorite. On a Monday night and a special Oyster offerings for only $1.50 each. We sat outside in a very relaxed comfortable and umbrella covered patio. The service was spot on. We ordered the special Tuscan Shrimp and Italian Sausage pasta dish. The staff and service were amazing. My husband and I went for oyster night. He said they were very clean and delicious. We've been to this restaurant on a couple of occasions and it's seemingly becoming more disappointing. Service was slow, food was underwhelming, and the ambiance is lackluster. We ordered the asparagus cream soup which was glorified baby food, not much flavor and certainly not worth the price. We also ordered fish and chips and the chicken bacon ranch sandwich. Nothing notable to add there. The wait staff was swamped and there was only one food runner! We always come for nicer occasions hoping for the best but have always left with a little bit of a sour taste. We likely won't be returning for a while sadly. read more

We stopped in here on a whim to grab a quick bite and were not disappointed. First of all, if you're a fish eater (my wife is a pescatarian) this place will be perfect for you - very few dishes with anything other than seafood in them. We weren't super hungry so just had a couple glasses of wine, the steamers and the lobster mac and cheese. Both excellent. It IS a little on the pricier side - but you pay a premium for good seafood. I came for lunch on Saturday. It was empty and for good reason. The stuffed shrimp had a little ball of some kind of raw bread crumbly thing on each flattened overcooked shrimp. There were 6. The mashed potatoes awful. I took it home but even my crow friend outside thought it awful. They need some new chefs here. Also very expensive and we felt ripped off as we left. They should call the clam chowder bacon chowder. read more

First of all, the staff and service were outstanding. Everybody was friendly and attentive. The restaurant is nostalgic yet modern at the same time creating a unique ambiance. The food however was hit and miss. The calamari was excellent. Batter was crispy and seasoned perfectly. The calamari itself was tender. I wish there were more. The dipping sauces were lovely. The oysters were on point. Not too small not too meaty. The cold lobster roll was decent. I've had worse but I have definitely had better. The lobster itself was tender but the dressing was overpowering and drowned the lobster. You could barely taste it. Serving size was a bit smaller than expected but acceptable. The fish and chips were very disappointing. The fries were decent and the cod itself was nice and flaky but it lacked flavoring. The batter was horrendous and undercooked for most of the servings. It was like biting into in oily sponge at the edges and one of the servings even had an old French fry embedded in it. The drinks were reasonably priced and their specials were tasty. I'll give this place another try at some point but I'm not in a rush. I'll probably try their oyster night next. 3.5 stars for now. read more

When I submit a critical review, I try to be very specific. Here goes: the Clam Chowder was cold and the clams in it - extremely tough. The Greek salad had no dressing and therefore no taste. The salmon was overcooked and dried out. The tuna tartar was salty, as was the avocado that topped it. The oysters were good, because they weren't cooked. These guys can't cook. read more

I often get the fish and chips - I have a favorite place for fish and chips and this isn't it, but their fish and chips are good. Its local. Disappointing :(. I've been going to Chesapeake for years. I feel that the quality of the food doesn't come close to the prices charged. I ordered the stuffed shrimp with scallop stuffing. The shrimp were small and not much flavor and the stuffing was missing the scallops and a very small amount of stuffing. The mashed potatoes resembled boxed instant. I have no problem paying $30 for a dish like this if it meets expectations but it definitely didn't. Not sure if I'll go back which is a real shame as the area lacks good resturants. read more

Tried Chesapeake for the third time. The first two times i ate at Chesapeake, I didn't like it. But my friend said they were having a special crab night so I went with her. We were both disappointed. We ordered a special crab appetizer which tasted good but we could not detect any crab in it. The soft shell crabs were drenched in thick green sauce that wasn't very good. The crab cake was quite tasty but ridiculously small. We ordered their desert special which we each took a bite of and it was terrible. The waiter then exchanged it for carrot cake which not only looked unappetizing, but tasted awful as well. We couldn't eat it. It was also very expensive. Just had a wonderful lunch with my wife at Chesapeake Tavern and could not be more impressed. First off our server Justine was superb. She answered any question we had about the Oysters we were getting. "We had a huge desire for a raw bar " we started out with 6 ice cold perfectly shucked PEI oysters then had the seafood tower for two. I took the clams ,shrimp , lobster and king crab.She got the tuna poke,lobster,and oysters. All satisfied. Great bottle of rose to wash it down. For dessert I had the Crème brûlée and cappuccino and my wife had the mousse shooter( just enough) with an Irish coffee (strong). Once again Justine really made the meal memorable. Beautiful interior, staff has varied strengths and my best recommendation is don't sit in bar area if you want a descent valued entree. We've been several times, oyster night, regular dining and always like that they offer 1/2 and full portions. This last time, All-You-Can Eat Shrimp left us hungry! Initially, the plate arrived with about 9-12 medium sized steamed shrimp with a vegetable du jour and starch. Ok, ate all that and wanted another serving of shrimp because the sides are not replenished. The next 6 shrimp were presented and again asked for more. The server asks if this was my second or third refill of shrimp. I told him second. Why? The next six arrived and we got the hint. It's NOT all you can eat SHRIMP because the server is counting the refills. Here's my final observation of the ALL YOU CAN EAT SHRIMP: as we were leaving, the cook was sitting at the bar with a heaping plate of all-you-can-eat-Shrimp and what a serving of 12+ steamed shrimp, piled high veggies and rice! Why? I'm not sure but won't be back to this pathetic establishment. There are so many restaurants near and far to be discovered and enjoyed! *BTW: I always start my reviews on the business' FACEBOOK site and just discovered that they BLOCKED me!! This alone shows they rather bury a patron than address the issue. UPDATE: Rachel, to the best of my knowledge, you are not the owner at Chesapeake Tavern. Funny to see your name and Keith's photo. The good news is the Greek salad was delicious, though not a typical Greek salad other than it had feta cheese and Kalamata olives. And the portion was very ungenerous. The burger was good. The tuna tartare was tasty:; though the avocado puree was excessive and perhaps masking that the chef doesn't know how to make the most of the tuna itself and thereby preserve its integrity? Perhaps the best most elegant thing we ordered was the unsweetened iced tea. It was perfect. The sweet potato fries were breaded -- I don't get that, potatoes are so satisfying on their own, why add breading? Our waitress was nice and friendly. Not her fault -- we ordered dessert and cancelled it after an overlong wait. The restaurant had gotten crowded by that time, and I guess the kitchen needs to be either better staffed,or better organized, or both. What was most disappointing and downright stunning was that this meal was ridiculously overpriced: haute cuisine prices for bar food that is trying to be something more. I spent just 20 bucks more for a meal at a truly stellar restaurant (my fav actually) in Manhattan the next night. Same number of appetizers and entrees, plus an all drink from the bar and a dessert. I came here with a group of friends. I was seated immediately, and chose to sit outside in their patio area. ( I highly recommend making a reservation. This place gets crazy busy.) Inside is a casual rustic style Tavern. Most of the tables outside have an umbrella covering, and on a beautiful fall night it's quite pleasant. The staff is extremely friendly, very attentive, and professional. My waiter Alex was amazing. As a matter of fact one of the staff thought I was leaving and said goodnight. When I told him I was looking for the ladies room he walked me right inside to it. They have a great signature cocktail menu. I believe it changes with the seasons. I tried their Lavender margarita and it was delicious. This place is known for their New England Clam Chowder, and Crabcakes, but there are many different options besides fish to chose from.Upon request they will also make GLUTEN-FREE dishes. I ordered several appetizers. My favorite was the SPICY TUNA TARTARE-Sushi grade tuna tartare, fluffy avocado mousse with a soy lime mayonnaise, tri-color tortilla chips. ( Definitely order this.) My second favorite is their FRIED CALAMARI -with chipotle aioli, and spicy pineapple mango chutney. First you dip the calamari in the aïoli and then you dip it right into the spicy mango chutney. The flavor combination is a great alternative to marinara sauce. Their NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER is a classic-The original recipe dates back to 1983. It's a rich, creamy blend of potatoes, double smoked bacon, onions & fresh clams. Simple but delicious. Next I tried their BUBBA J's CHICKEN TENDERS - chicken strips tossed in Chef Joel's signature sweet & tangy BBQ sauce. It is served with a side of coleslaw. The chicken strips were ok, not my favorite. I found them to be a bit dry. For my entrée I chose a full order of their CHESAPEAKE BAY CRAB CAKES so did two of my friends. The original recipe is from the Chesapeake Bay Seafood Co. The pair of crab cakes are seared to golden perfection and served with creole remoulade, vegetable du jour, ( corn on the cob) coleslaw, & Chesapeake fries. A full portion of two small crab cakes cost $40.99. It's a bit pricey for the size. The crab cakes were good. My friends ordered NY STRIP STEAK- 12oz sliced steak with a bourbon brown sugar- caramelized onion glace with vegetable du jour & mashed potatoes. SCALLOP AND MUSHROOM RISOTTO-Fresh sea scallops over wild mushroom risotto with a truffled balsamic glaze, shaved grana padana & arugula. This dish I'm having next time I come. SHRIMP ORECCHIETTE Sautéed shrimp, Italian sausage, chicken & grilled kale with oven roasted grape tomato in a garlic lemon white wine sauce. My friend really loved this dish. The Chesapeake Tavern also has happy hour, and children's menu. Only one of us decided to order dessert because the rest of us had multiple drinks, and filled up on appetizers. We got the clam chowder, the calamari, the stuffed shrimp, the shrimp and grits, and the carrot cake (and a few drinks) Everything was flavorful, tender and came out hot. The desserts are made in house. The drinks were well balanced and refreshing (and affordable a mule for 8$ I wish I got another). Just okay. Clam Chowder just tastes like bacon and has a thin unappealing consistency. Very little clam or potatoes. The yellow hue of the chowder doesn't scream authentic in any way. Steer clear of it. Also ordered lobster tail( expensive small portion with small sides) and a lobster roll. I would say the lobster roll was worth it as it was a decent portion and came with fries. Overall, everything was very mediocre. I wish I could say it was better, but I think they probably need to cut back on their menu items and work on selling just a few items. This is a tough review to write. Went for Easter brunch. Quaint, rustic rooms with a large variety of food. Clam chowder was excellent, full of clams and bacon, not filled with potatoes. Raw bar with shrimp, salmon, oysters. Dry good. Buffet items included chicken schnitzel, steamed clams, shrimp and grits, pasta, and a full breakfast spread, including omelettes. Carving station with lamb and pork loin. Desserts were cranberry apple cobbler, waffles and ice cream, mousse shots. Overall a great dining experience - high quality buffet food. The problem arose when the check came. Buffet cost was $52.99pp. Very reasonable. Their Facebook ad said they there were unlimited mimosas and bloody Mary's. The menu they gave us said the same thing. The server said the same thing. When we got the check there was an extra $60 charge - $30 for endless mimosas and $30 for bloody Mary's. We had 1 each - party of 4). This was never disclosed - and there were at least 3 opportunities to do so - in the ad, on the menu, by the server. When we inquired, we were told that "there had been some confusion" around that, and that they were not included. They mentioned an email that we never received. To top it off, they added on a 20% service charge, which I didn't have a problem with. Service was so good we probably would have left more than 20%. But they based the tip amount on the total charge, inclusive of the extra $60 for the not-included drinks. So a $250 check came to $350. It's a shame they deceived diners, because this was an otherwise excellent experience. read more
