My mom took me out for a belated birthday dinner, and it was both of our first times dining at the Red Ox. We arrived around 4:30 pm on a Wednesday and were seated immediately for the two of us, which was lovely. I started with a filthy martini (one part vodka, one part olive juice)... and they nailed it. Exactly what I asked for. My mom ordered a whiskey old fashioned press, which she enjoyed. For appetizers, we ordered the French onion soup, deep-fried mozzarella, and bacon-wrapped scallops. My mom also had the soup of the day, which was a turkey pot pie soup. Everything was very good overall. One small note on the scallops, and this is important for context: I personally have a strong aversion to seafood, and my mom is usually careful not to order seafood around me because even the smell can make me nauseous. However, scallops are usually an exception, as they don't tend to have a strong seafood odor. In this case, there was no unpleasant smell at all, which I appreciated. That said, the scallops themselves appeared under-seared and very pale, and the bacon was undercooked. Not raw, just soft and not crispy. My mom agreed it could have used a few more minutes. A minor miss, but worth mentioning. For my entrée, I ordered the French dip, which came with carrots... and honestly, the carrots deserve their own moment. They were tiny, perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned, buttery, and balanced with just the right amount of sweet and salty. I love carrots, and these were exceptional. Highly recommend. My mom ordered a Wednesday special trio, which included barbecue ribs, pineapple glazed ham, and a turkey dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. I'll note that the ham itself was delicious, but the pineapple glaze wasn't quite for me personally, as it leaned a bit too tangy for my taste. That said, the turkey was phenomenal. I had a bite, and it was moist, flavorful, and absolutely something I'll come back for. The mashed potatoes and gravy were excellent. I love stuffing, but this one wasn't my favorite; it tasted slightly sour or underdone to me, though that could simply be a preference thing. I'd still order the turkey dinner again without hesitation. Because it was my birthday, our server Jenny surprised me with a slice of chocolate cake, which was incredibly sweet and thoughtful. I was very full... but yes, I ate the cake, and it was delicious. We also split a Pink Squirrel for dessert, which was rich, nostalgic, and the perfect way to end the meal. Service was excellent throughout the evening. Jenny was warm, attentive, and paced everything perfectly. Food came out efficiently without overwhelming the table. The hostess was also welcoming and kind. The dining room was clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated. The lighting was just right, not too dark. We also arrived at a great time, because shortly after our entrées came out, the restaurant quickly filled up. One small suggestion: the website mentions half-price apps and drink discounts, but it isn't clear that those specials are bar-area only. Not a huge issue for us, but clearer wording online would help manage expectations, especially for guests who can't sit at high bar seating. Overall, this was a really special dinner, especially after years of hearing about the Red Ox and never going. More positives than negatives by far. Service here is always five stars, and they are one of the few places in the FRV that takes a reservation without any grief our pretense that I find so prevalent in the valley. The food today was just okay. I had the fish, and it was good. The birthday boy had a steak and he said he enjoyed it. Two others had sandwiches, and they appeared to be satisfied. Two at my table ordered Chicken Cacciatore and they both said it was too salty--really salty--as in, they didn't eat it. I did mention it to our server who was very gracious and said she'd pass it on to the chef. Again, generally good, but they just didn't hit it out of the ballpark today. read more

Stumbled in on the way home from the Packers game... We were greeted pretty quickly after being seated. The waitress was kind and answered all my questions regarding menu items. The food came out in a timely manner and everyone enjoyed their meals. I mean we were starving! Definitely hit the spot! Drinks were cold, food was hot. We left with full bellies ready for a nap! The Prime Rib - so tender you can cut it with a fork, in my opinion the Red Ox serves the best Prime Rib in the state of Wisconsin. Came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon on our way up to a Packers game. Called ahead and made a reservation but there was only one other table occupied when we arrived so I guess we didn't need reservations that time but reading other reviews it looks like it gets busy for dinner. The service was nice and friendly. I ordered the prime rib and it was a pretty large portion. It tasted good, also a bit gamier than beef I've had elsewhere. Prices were decent for the portion size. Bread and salad were fine. While the food didn't blow me away, it was certainly satisfactory and I would come here again if there wasn't a wait and I was in the neighborhood. read more

We stopped into the Red Ox recently with friends. The place looks like it has not been updated or remodeled in many years. (Visually very dreary) They do feature a huge bar area if you were waiting to be seated unfortunately they don't offer any craft cocktails or signature drinks just your basics ...wine + beer etc. We waited about an hour to be seated. I thought this was an upscale supper club, but everyone around us was dressed very casually some in shorts as if they were going to the grocery store. YIKES! We were the only people dressed up. There was a gentleman standing by the hostess table wearing sweaty gym shorts and wrinkled T-shirt ...who look like he was going to play basketball. One of the staff members told me he was the owner. WHAA?? I can't believe the owner wouldn't dress up, especially in what is considered to be an upscale supper club. (sigh and Welcome to Wis!) Our waitress was not the friendliest person on the block. Once we were presented with menus and I was a bit disappointed that they did not have more options...nor any healthy options. Especially in today's society.... 2024 not 1974. We inquired about a few dishes on the menu and the waitress responded that there were no substitutions or changes. I thought the prices were extremely high for what you're getting.(about $40+ pp) This was not gourmet food. I would consider this restaurant to be a 2 or 3 out of five stars. We were a table of six adults. We each ordered something different and tried each others. Unfortunately, none of us meals primarily because they were all very dried out and superplant basically flavorless. The whole point of going out is to get a beautiful plate of food that you're not able to create at home. This was not it. All the tables were smashed together. One of the biggest disappointments was the position of OUR table. We were crammed in a corner in which half of our group were against the wall and not able to get out. The only exit was into another table, which wasn't an exit. We asked the waitress if we could simply slide the table forward, 2 feet in order to make it easier for our group to get in and out - she responded ..."that's not possible." We were all very disappointed!! Our recent dining experience at the red ox was not a great one. I have not been there in years, except for just recently. I don't feel we were treated very special by the staff, except for one female bartender, who was very nice to me. The owner did not greet us nor did he swing by the tables to ask how the guests dining experience was. Classless if you ask me. The overall vibe was a bit stiff. The people dining there, including the staff were very standoffish, and no one was overly friendly. Can't say that we're excited to go back. There are way too many other restaurants in the Fox Cities to choose from. I guess if you were a regular there, and this is what you consider normal, its your kind of place. To the rest of us who have traveled outside of Wisconsin and outside of the US, we expect excellence. I have worked in customer service my entire life. This place needs a re-vamp because it is not making the cut! Here are a positive few tips that we hve gathered for your consideration... - the owner and staff should dress up -add a summer signature drink or two to your menu - offer an up charge to any item on your menu to customize and accommodate guests - take a few tables out and move things around slightly in order to make each seating arrangement more comfortable and easier for the guest to get out of their chairs - add a few healthy choices to your menu BEST WISHES! read more

First time here! Seated right away with our party of 4 at approximately 620pm on a Wednesday night. Our server was Andrew. Super friendly, knowledgeable, and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. Wed/Sun have food specials. Like half off a full rack of ribs, and so much more. Truly hard to narrow down what to select with their diverse menu. The strip steak did not disappoint. It came out perfectly medium rare. It was busy, yet the ambiance of the restaurant was nice. Of all the restaurants in the Fox Valley, the Red Ox is in my Top 3. They have fantastic lunch and dinner menus and provide a great value for the cost. You'll get delicious homemade bread with honey butter (yum!), soup/salad (I highly recommend a crock of the French Onion soup!) and a choice of potato (love the twice baked) with most of the options on the menu. They also have a great Kid's Menu with lots of choices - my daughter's favorite is the pizza; which a huge, super cheesy, personal pizza. Ow wow. I grew up going to supper clubs but it's hard to find a good one these days. This was a great experience. First of all get reservations. I didn't and there was an hour wait. So we Had to have a couple drinks. The bar was nice and it was a short wait. So for dinner I got the turkey soup, ribs with door county sauce, and the twice baked potato. It was all really good. I got so many ribs that I brought half home. I eat a good amount so seriously, it was a lot of food. But I also got a peanut butter pie for dessert. The service was really good also. This would be a great place for a nice dinner, a date, or a place to get a couple old fashions. read more

We came from Madison to try a few supper clubs in the area. Man are we glad we started with The Red Ox! When you walk in, you think you should check in at the bar, however, the check in is past the bar and almost into the dining area. The bartenders were extremely friendly! The service was just impeccable all around. Our server Hannah was phenomenal too! The staff were all wearing masks and the dining area was perfectly spaced out. They even had signs on the tables to kindly not move settings around because they were there for our safety. We ordered the mozzarella "sticks" and they came out in large balls of goodness. We highly recommend those! I was the only one to get a salad instead of soup, and they all raved about the soup! The salad is a wedge salad, and I know not everyone is a fan of that, so just an FYI. I ordered the filet mingon, and it was one of the best steaks I've ever had. And I've had a lot! It has this garlic butter that simmers on top and onion rings on the side. The twice baked potato was melt in your mouth good! Everyone just loved their food! Others got the shrimp Denise, New York strip, and salmon Diablo. They even brought out a delicious piece of cake to help us celebrate my husband's birthday! So nice! Everyone left with to go boxes, full bellies and rave reviews! read more

Atmosphere: Very supper club vibe. Large bar area when you walk in. Dark carpeting that looks like it is from the 90's. Everything is clean though. Parking lot is across the street. Service: Fantastic waitress. Very accommodating and personable. Quick to refill drinks and water glasses. Drinks: Prices are reasonable and the old fashioned's are pretty good. Food: The menu is huge. Too big in my opinion. I feel like, if they have that large of a menu, how are the ingredients fresh? I ordered the prime rib and crab cake combo. The dinner salad with the meal was a great size and the bread basket and warm butter was delicious. The crab cakes were tender, I wish there was more of a crust on the outside, more crab on the inside and less bread. The chipotle hollandaise sauce is delicious, but the sauce was broken when delivered to the table. The prime rib was too done for my liking (medium rare is what I ordered), and was lacking in flavor. It is so hard to find a GREAT prime rib that has flavor and a perfect cook. The twice baked potato was delicious and the perfect size. The bill was a little over $70 before tip for two people, but I feel like there are other restaurants that I would rather dine at and drop that kind of money. I think we may come back to try more of their homemade appetizers, but we are going to stay away from the entrees and keep searching for great prime rib. read more

I see a lot of great reviews for here, but I'm honestly perplexed by them. I was extremely overwhelmed and would not choose to go back. The only thing bringing this to a 2 star was our server, who was great. We came up from Madison. I wouldn't drive back for sure, and I wouldn't go back even if I lived 2 blocks away. We went with my parents for a dinner service. We started with the stuffed mushrooms. They were nothing short of horrifying. Greasy, soggy, and absolutely bogged down with unseasoned cream cheese. I managed to force one down, but it was a close thing to not finishing that one. Their bread is good, but I wasn't a fan of their famous butter. The plain butter was superior. I got the haddock trio. The white wine, Oscar style, and the bourbon brown sugar. I did not finish this meal. The first problem is that all 3 pieces are served on one unattractive metal tray. The bottom of the tray becomes this watery, oily, mess that contains the 3 sauces or flavors that you got. *Maybe* if you only got one kind of fish it'd be good, but that really defeats the purpose of trying the menu. Everything was bland. The bourbon brown sugar had no notes except sugar. There was no finesse to the sauce and the bourbon was no where to be found. And when that sauce mixed with the hollandaise from the Oscar style it was indescribably bad. Everything was very overpriced, and I feel bad that it's where we ended up, and what my parents had to pay for the meal. read more
