    Turkey and dressing

Stumbled in on the way home from the Packers game... We were greeted pretty quickly after being seated. The waitress was kind and answered all my questions regarding menu items. The food came out in a timely manner and everyone enjoyed their meals. I mean we were starving! Definitely hit the spot! Drinks were cold, food was hot. We left with full bellies ready for a nap! This place is super casual. A little loud but not obnoxiously so, you can still hold conversation at your table and hear everyone. Pub environment. Looks old but is clean.

    Carrots

My mom took me out for a belated birthday dinner, and it was both of our first times dining at the Red Ox. We arrived around 4:30 pm on a Wednesday and were seated immediately for the two of us, which was lovely. I started with a filthy martini (one part vodka, one part olive juice)... and they nailed it. Exactly what I asked for. My mom ordered a whiskey old fashioned press, which she enjoyed. For appetizers, we ordered the French onion soup, deep-fried mozzarella, and bacon-wrapped scallops. My mom also had the soup of the day, which was a turkey pot pie soup. Everything was very good overall. One small note on the scallops, and this is important for context: I personally have a strong aversion to seafood, and my mom is usually careful not to order seafood around me because even the smell can make me nauseous. However, scallops are usually an exception, as they don't tend to have a strong seafood odor. In this case, there was no unpleasant smell at all, which I appreciated. That said, the scallops themselves appeared under-seared and very pale, and the bacon was undercooked. Not raw, just soft and not crispy. My mom agreed it could have used a few more minutes. A minor miss, but worth mentioning. For my entrée, I ordered the French dip, which came with carrots... and honestly, the carrots deserve their own moment. They were tiny, perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned, buttery, and balanced with just the right amount of sweet and salty. I love carrots, and these were exceptional. Highly recommend. My mom ordered a Wednesday special trio, which included barbecue ribs, pineapple glazed ham, and a turkey dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. I'll note that the ham itself was delicious, but the pineapple glaze wasn't quite for me personally, as it leaned a bit too tangy for my taste. That said, the turkey was phenomenal. I had a bite, and it was moist, flavorful, and absolutely something I'll come back for. The mashed potatoes and gravy were excellent. I love stuffing, but this one wasn't my favorite; it tasted slightly sour or underdone to me, though that could simply be a preference thing. I'd still order the turkey dinner again without hesitation. Because it was my birthday, our server Jenny surprised me with a slice of chocolate cake, which was incredibly sweet and thoughtful. I was very full... but yes, I ate the cake, and it was delicious. We also split a Pink Squirrel for dessert, which was rich, nostalgic, and the perfect way to end the meal. Service was excellent throughout the evening. Jenny was warm, attentive, and paced everything perfectly. Food came out efficiently without overwhelming the table. The hostess was also welcoming and kind. The dining room was clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated. The lighting was just right, not too dark. We also arrived at a great time, because shortly after our entrées came out, the restaurant quickly filled up. One small suggestion: the website mentions half-price apps and drink discounts, but it isn't clear that those specials are bar-area only. Not a huge issue for us, but clearer wording online would help manage expectations, especially for guests who can't sit at high bar seating. Overall, this was a really special dinner, especially after years of hearing about the Red Ox and never going. More positives than negatives by far. Final rating: 8.5 / 10 We'll absolutely be back... especially for the turkey dinner and those carrots.

If you're in the mood for a nicer evening out, love steak or seafood, and appreciate a setting with a bit of classic charm, Red Ox offers a very strong experience. It's one of the better steakhouses/seafood places in the Fox Valley area. The trade-off is cost: you're paying for quality, ambience, and service, so it's not casual cheap eats--but you get exceptional service and tasty food.

    Stuffed mushrooms

This was my first supper club experience and I'm so glad my friend brought me here. The prices are very reasonable and the food is outstanding as well as great service. Prime rib is tender and flavorful, the French onion soup is some of the best I've had and the stuffed mushrooms... SO good. Can't wait to come back the next time I'm in Appleton!

    Seafood Combination Dinner

Service was excellent! The menu was pretty extensive which was kind of nice! Food was nice and hot! I like variety so tried the Seafood combo which came with salad, potato and salad!

Came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon on our way up to a Packers game. Called ahead and made a reservation but there was only one other table occupied when we arrived so I guess we didn't need reservations that time but reading other reviews it looks like it gets busy for dinner. The service was nice and friendly. I ordered the prime rib and it was a pretty large portion. It tasted good, also a bit gamier than beef I've had elsewhere. Prices were decent for the portion size. Bread and salad were fine. While the food didn't blow me away, it was certainly satisfactory and I would come here again if there wasn't a wait and I was in the neighborhood.

Delicious meal- cooked perfectly, homemade, large portions, and awesome flavors. The waitstaff was very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. It was an all-around great experience and it is a new favorite for steak in the valley.

The lunch prime rib meal is a great deal. All food ordered was good. It was surprisingly all good considering the interior needs a refresh.

We had fun listening, even though we were sitting at the bar. Dinning experience was only so-so however. Thing I really liked was the French Roquefort dressing (for salad). We both also ordered hash browns as a side, my wife's browns came out first and they were great. I was told that that mine would be out in a minute. What came out was definitely freezer burnt, gray and oily. My browns did not even look like my wife's, and tasted terrible. Because we had plenty to eat, I just shared my wife's and left mine. I did show the waitress. . She told me I should have told her earlier, she would have had them remake them. That would have been great if she would have been at the table more than the one time she said "how are the first few bites". Never got a refill on my water, even though I asked. (It's funny... she did ask if she could refill my alcoholic beverage multiple times when that was empty!) Arrived 27 minutes early, figuring we could sit at the bar and have a drink. Wrong. Their website says "Unwind with friends and family in the inviting Brunswick-style bar and lounge..." but the bar only has about 10 seats. All were occupied with people eating dinner at the bar. We were directed to go sit in the hotel hall outside to wait. That was one of the high points. The whole experience was just blah. Service was slow. The place was not busy - about 50 percent occupied I would guess. My wife's dirty martini arrived without an olive. There is a huge list of pricey wines by the bottle, but only maybe 5 reds by the glass. And after a wait, I was told the one I ordered was out. The French onion soup we ordered was pretty good. Steak was good, a small filet mignon. But - it was just plopped on a plate by itself. A grey piece of meat in the middle of a white plate by itself. For $47. No garnish, no effort to make it attractive. Sides were wrong, ordered twice-baked potato, almost got a regular baked potato. Overall, food was OK, just low effort at presentation and slow in coming. There's no dessert menu. Would have been nice to have a cup of coffee and a piece of cheesecake. It's not like they were looking to turn the table, took us two hours start to finish. Though I noted on the reservation it was our anniversary, that didn't get carried through. We don't need to be treated like royalty, but why ask if it's a special occasion if you're not going to acknowledge it? The check was wrong. I was charged for the glass of wine I didn't get. Had to wait again while that got fixed. The restrooms aren't in the restaurant - you have to leave and hike down the hotel hall to find one. It's just not the 4-star experience you would think from the billing and the big prices on the menu. Look elsewhere if you are looking for that fine dining experience.

I Came Back to Appleton... Wisconsin Immediately Fed Me…read more There are many ways to kick off an HS Reunion weekend. Apparently, the correct Wisconsin way is cheese curds, a soft pretzel, beer cheese, mustard, and craft beer. One of my host~family sisters and longtime friends brought me to Stone Arch Brewpub shortly after I touched down in Appleton, and this was exactly the kind of welcome~back I needed. Let's talk about those cheese curds. Pillowy. Soft. Tender. Ridiculously good. I don't say this lightly, but these may be some of the best cheese curds I've ever eaten. Then came the pretzel~super buttery and incredibly soft~with Wisconsin beer cheese and mustard for dipping. At that point, the reunion could have ended and I would've considered the trip successful. But we weren't done. We worked our way through an assortment of craft beers spanning Hazy IPAs, West Coast IPAs, Sours and Gose~style beers. The atmosphere was cool, the service was great, and the combination of food, beer and catching up with an old friend made this feel like the perfect beginning to my return to Appleton. Sometimes the best travel experiences aren't about finding the newest or trendiest place. Sometimes it's about sitting down with someone who knows you, sharing some great food and beer, and realizing some things really do feel like coming home. Stone Arch was a damn good way to start the reunion. Would absolutely return.
