One of the treats when you come to Livingston I must stop Mark's in and out ordered cheeseburger tater tots onion rings unbelievable just like 1954 when it opened I remember it was a remarkable day. The whole town was here the high school marching band was here that's where I'm at my bride. She was dressed and so beautiful just like a Sunday morning going to church. We didn't know what the word sexy was back in but today I think about it she was pretty damn sexy. We were staying in Livingston and saw the long lines everytime we drove past. We were impressed by the reviews and decided to try it. People in line raved about the burgers. What a huge disappointment. The burgers were small and plain, and not unlike a McDonalds hamburger. Is this really the best Livingston has to offer? Mark's used to be a gas station at one time and now it is a very busy and popular drive in restaurant. It also reminds me of the Dicks Drive In's in the greater Seattle area. While waiting in line to order there were some very chatty but well meaning customers about who identified themselves as locals. No harm but it made the wait more tolerable. We passed by this place several times before stopping in to try it. There was always a crowd outside waiting for food. We went around 1:00 and it was packed. Didn't really know what to order so we went with two regular cheeseburgers fries and a strawberry milkshake. The cheeseburgers were tiny and mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise and pickles only. We had them add the mayo. Really wasn't impressed at all. Fries were unremarkable the shake was good. But probably won't go back when in Livingston. The first time I drove past Mark's BeefBurgers the temperature was in the mid 40's and it was drizzling rain. There was a line of customers from the counter all the way to the street. "Self," I noted, "That must be a darned good burger!" A couple of days later the weather had improved so I stood in line with a couple dozen other customers and waited my turn. Summer is never official until Mark's In and Out opens, so a visit is needed to start the warm season off the right way. That being said, our order each and every time has had a mistake, this visit the burgers were not correct and for some reason looked like they had been sat on or pushed down. The fries were missing entirely. After standing in line for as long as we always do it isn't worth it to wait again for an order of fries. We will still go every summer because, like I said, it isn't official until the Mark's visit, that cute little drive in is the best way to get happy. The atmosphere says SUMMER! Yes, Virginia, there is no Santa Claus. But there is an "In (a) n (d) Out that is quite good compared to that CA chain! Mark's been around before I was even a tadpole and, yes, it appears to be the original location. Like those "other guys" the concept ((from the fifties) was get in and get out. The other guys eventually changed up their strategy to include dining inside. But not Mark. Order it and wait in the parking lot while they cook up a great burger and then go back to your car to eat it. No it's not fancy. No there are no restrooms - although there is a blue and a pink portable john you can use. Not sure how those with gender identity issues choose which color. I love this place and when you come here be prepared to circle the block a few times to get parking. I love it because they really do make a nice burger and, unlike those other guys - there are more choices than just 1, 2, or 3. Had the Super Cheese (double) with the standard trimming (ie: ketchup, mustard, pickles, and onion) without the ketchup. But you can add lots more if you like. You don't go to Mark's for the food (unless you have small children), you go for the nostalgia. Like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, Mark's is your classic old school Dairy Queen or A & W style (no indoor seating) hamburger joint. We tried everything from burgers, chicken sandwich, and hot dogs to fries, tater tots, and onion rings. All in all, the food quality is very similar to McDonalds. Fun for special occasions. Classic walk-up burger joint in good ok' Livingston, MT. The prices are hard to beat but it makes sense when you see the size of the patty! I saw many people getting double and triple burgers which would be the way to go if you wanted the meat equivalent of a 1/3 lb burger. Pretty sure they use Kraft singles for the cheese but the meat and ice cream are all local Montana-made products! A go-to if you're rolling through town during their open season. Place had very charming small-town vibes. It was pretty busy on a Saturday evening. After we place our order, it's another 25 minutes to enjoy the scenery while we waited for the buzzer to go off. Burgers are on the small side but then again they don't cost much. They now offer huckleberry shakes and malts, something that wasn't on their earlier menus. Wow I'm pretty surprised only 91 reviews about Mark's In & Out Beefburgers. I think this place is terrific and definitely takes me back to the simpler times of old fashioned classic, burgers and shakes. I was randomly, and I mean randomly, passing through the town of Livingston, Montana along my cross country road trip. Coming just off Interstate 90, I had never even heard of Livingston, Montana, yet here I was hungry for a late breakfast/early lunch. It must have been around 10:50am and then I stumbled upon Mark's In and Out. There was already a line forming outside and from the appearance of Mark's, I could absolutely sense this was the place to eat in Livingston. The outside decor of Mark's is furbished like an authentic 50's drive-thru diner. Now although the setup wasn't essentially a drive-thru, I simply parked my car along a side street and got in line. I was craving a freshly made hamburger, some fries and a soda. Plus, I knew the prices would be affordable as well. Ya know, like every now and again...you come across places like Mark's where they're like staples of small towns. They're a vintage "mom and pop" burger joint. Since I'm a huge fan of the Food Network's Diner's, Drive' Ins and Dives, I wondered if Guy Fieri had ever eaten here? Although I didn't see any plaques on the walls, Mark's is as deserving as you can imagine. Though...this Livingston, Montana is so under the radar and in the middle of nowhere I question if anyone or many people have ever visited this town? I was here after leaving Yellowstone National Park...so for those tourists living north of Yellowstone, they may be familiar with Livingston and Mark's. But back to the task at hand...Mark's In & Out... I got in line and waited for 11am when they opened. The line went fast and efficient. Maybe I stood for 10 minutes at the most. This gave me an opportunity to view the menu and take some photos, of course, lol. Once I ordered, (btw, you can pay by credit card) I then waited for my name to be called out and was handed my food by the side window. After ordering, it took another 10 minutes for my meal to be prepared. All their menu items are sold ala carte. For $4.19, I went with the Bacon Triplecheese. Yes that's 3 patties with bacon and cheese. In fact, Mark's even offered a Quadcheese...wow, 4 patties! Instead off getting French fries, I changed up my routine and decided to go with Battered Mushrooms for $2.99. And finally I got a large Rootbeer for $1.89. So for my burger, mushrooms and drink it cost $10 plus I added a $2 tip. For $12...it was a fine deal. I was excited overall and had a good feeling about the food. Mark's doesn't feature any outdoor tables and of course no indoor dining as well. This was not a problem for me as since this pandemic ever started...I had been eating in my car almost always, especially on my summer 2020 road trip. The verdict, lol....the burger was fresh off the grill w/ melted American cheese. The bun was nice and soft and thankfully the bacon was crispy! Woohoo, you know a place is good when their bacon is top notch crispy, lol. And I received about 10 giant breaded mushrooms. I loved the mushrooms. They were quite flavorful and the outside coating was hot and crunchy right out of the fryer. The mushrooms were a terrific change of pace from the usual old fashioned French fries. I'm really glad I decided to change it up and pick the mushrooms. In fact, if somehow I ever returned to Livingston and Mark's...I'd order the mushrooms over and over again. They were a great pairing with my burger. And the soda was just fine, hehehe. So overall, I devoured my entire Bacon Triplecheese and all the mushrooms and root beer. I was extremely satisfied with my meal, food and experience here at Mark's. This was just the place I had been looking for and luckily happened to stumble upon while driving right through the heart of Livingston. Finally, I had such a good experience here at Mark's. This was the ideal way to take a break from my driving and enjoy a charming, throwback diner dedicated to the 1950's. After eating at Mark's I felt refueled and recharged to continue along my cross country road trip. Although not many tourists may pass through Livingston, Montana...I'd certainly like to give recognition to Mark's In and Out Beefburgers, especially for those folks who happen to be passing by this town of Livingston. This place is always packed! So we had to try it. We were very intrigued by the burgers, but one of the locals suggested the pork tenderloin sandwich instead. So very good! Crispy and still tender, perfect with just lettuce, tomato and mayo. The huckleberry shake and butterscotch shake were a great treat! Lots of hype for this iconic business and it IS worth your business! The food is extremely low priced, but it's because the beef patties and bacon are paper thin and the burgers are quite small. A little off-putting at first but here's my take-away: The burgers are delicious! The shakes (the large size is actually a soft drink "medium") are delicious! By not eating such a big "American sized" burger, I can enjoy some of the delicious sides aka; Deep fried mushrooms, homemade onion rings, etc. First of all, the prices make it easy to do that and secondly, as a light eater, I have room to enjoy more good stuff rather than laboring over a huge burger I can't finish. The first time went there we were with a large group and got the food home and my food was missing . So didn't get to try it the first time thought I would go back again and try it again this time with a smaller order . On the way back to Minnesota from Seattle I stopped in Livingstone as I was going to make a jaunt down the Chico Hot Springs for a quick soak and as I drove past Mark,s In and Out I was amazed at the long line and the food must be good here So I made a note to stop when I returned from Chico. When I got back the line had about 25 but moved fairly fast. As I was hungry I went for two double cheese burgers, onion rings and a large vanilla malt. The lady order taker was super nice and walked me thru the process as she knew I a first time customer. I was given a buzzer which made it simple when all was ready And when the food was delivered it was a real wow. Burgers just like I like them and the malt was excellent, it tasted like it was made with real ice cream. Tolkien had just released Lord of The Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring), and the polio vaccine was successfully created. Another of the year's great events was the opening of Mark's In & Out in Livingston, Montana. As you drive up to Mark's In & Out, you are immediately hit with a blast of nostalgia with the neon lights and signs advertising the food. The pleasing red, white, and baby blue of the old-school restaurant, the tile bench surrounding the entire perimeter of the building: Everything about this place screams throwback. As my husband stepped up to the ordering stand, we made the decision to keep things simple. I walked across the street and secured a picnic table in a park directly across, they have no seating except on the ledge of the restaurant which is the word burger stand is fitting. The street in front of the restaurant was quite busy but the locals know to stop and let you across which is exactly what they did for me. We stayed with the classics: two Cheeseburgers, and Onion Rings. In a restaurant like this, it's better to keep it simple rather than order something complicated that you are going to end up not liking. The Cheeseburgers are utterly delicious. The burger is stacked together comes the porous, supple bun, griddle-heated in burger juices; the two patties enveloped in oozing, gooey cheddar cheese. After devouring the Cheeseburger, my husband and I started digging into the sides. Onion Rings are fantastic. The golden-brown, crunchy rings are so delectable and flavorful that we happily ate them without any condiments or toppings. The Strawberry Shake, Marshmallow Shake, and Vanilla Ice Cream Sundae looked perfect dishes to enjoy on a hot summer day but we did not order these items. Mark's In & Out uses only Wilcoxson's Ice Cream (a fabulous ice cream company based right in Livingston, Montana). These shakes looked thick, creamy, and great I am sorry my husband and I did not get one. Maybe next time and if we are in this area again it is a must due repeat! Prices are low at Mike's. My dad brought me here and he grew up in Livingston. He said the burgers used to have shredded lettuce on them, and it was no extra charge. Now you have to pay extra for lettuce, and extra for tomatoes, too. For old times sake we got tots, as well, because he always liked those, but these tots were overcooked. He made the comment that Mark's must've been sold to new owners since he'd last been there because it wasn't the same. So, I will describe my burger: a thin beef patty. Very plain tasting. We had heard rave reviews about this place, so we stopped to try them out. There was a little bit of a line, but not bad. I like that they give you a buzzer so you can sit in the car while you wait. I got a double bacon burger, and the other half got a single. Definitely order a double or triple unless you are feeding a 3 yo. Got onion rings and mushrooms but no sauce. I guess you have to order that separately, but they could ask if you want it. I would have gladly paid for ranch. Burgers were ok, didn't seem to be seasoned. As we drove to this spot from our Airbnb a lightning storm started. Nonetheless, it was fun to order and sit and wait/eat from our car.
